"I'm feeling a bit light headed"

    September 14, 2015 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Today we took the tram in to Colonge to go to Sudturm des Kolner Domes, or in english a very big gothic church. It was amazing though, it was the tallest building in the world from 1880-1884. Construction started in 1288! So intricate. It's 157.3m tall, or 533 steps to get to the viewing platform. Anyone that knows me knows that I have a little issue with some heights. It turns out that winding my way up a very narrow tightly wound spiral staircase for 533 steps classifies as an 'issue'. Seriously, this thing was O-L-D. So we powered up the stairs, stayed long enough on the platform for a few photos, and then headed back down.

We spent the rest of the day perusing stores and camping equipment. Someone asked me for directions (I think?) in the book store so I'm taking that as a tick that I look like a local. It has been decided that I am the "sacrifice" and "speak" to the locals, Nick is navigation man with his book of maps and train knowledge. I mostly use brands and questionable hand gestures when "speaking".

(What person consents to working in that scaffolding, which was right at the top of the church!?!)

What lovely photos. I just loved all the churches we went to whilst we were over that way. I could never get over thinking about all the people that had used the church 100's of years ago and who had walked where we were now walking. Love your blog. Love Mum

    Cologne Cathedral

    May 11, 2015 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

We attended the noon office at the Kölndom, as it is known here. Brief prayers were offered, including prayers for the travelers present. I thought this was a very thoughtful touch. Interspersed were three Bach toccatas, probably chosen for this week in the liturgical year. I could not imagine a more worshipful experience. Cologne Cathedral has long been my very favorite, and when I actually saw it, I was not disappointed. A little girl got loose from her mother in one of the radial chapels, and Glenda snapped a shot of her.Read more

    Remnants of WW II

    March 24, 2018 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Cheryl had a commitment this morning so Uwe took us to the nearby tram station which we took to downtown Cologne. It was such a lively place with people, buskers, squares with monuments, and activities on the nearby Rhine River. Our first destination was the NS Documentation Building which was the headquarters of the Cologne Gestapo (secret police) from 1935-1945. It is a memorial to the victims of the Nazis as well as a research centre. Our moods changed from happy to sombre as we toured the basement level where the prisoners were kept, interrogated, tortured and sometimes executed. There were 10 small cells, about 6’ x 9’, that at times held up to 30 prisoners in each. The men and women prisoners were from European countries and had scratched messages into the concrete walls. It seemed that most of them were communists or part of the anti-nazi youth movement. The main floor had a display about the Warsaw uprising where Hitler had ordered the whole city and it’s people to be destroyed. The 2 upper floors were about WW II history but it was all in German, while the other exhibits did have English descriptions. It was a sad but enlightening visit.

The Cologne Cathedral was a few blocks away so we also visited this enormous, elaborate Cathedral along with a few hundred other tourists (average is 20,000 per day!). During WW II the Cathedral was hit 14 times by aerial bombs and remained standing, despite the rest of the city being flattened. The allied aircraft used the twin spires as a navigational landmark.

We met Cheryl and Uwe and after stopping at 2 shops on our to-do list, we settled on a Bavarian restaurant for a very late lunch. Afterwards we walked along the Rhine before heading to their home on the tram. It was a sunny, mild Spring day and after a long, cool and wet winter in Cologne, we all welcomed the pleasant weather.
