      Cruising the Caldera

      It was just perfect to sleep the night with the French doors wide open and wake up to the great view. Another wonderful breakfast and then I settled in to read for a bit. Pete went out to find a laundry while I spent a lazy hour reading and relaxing. When he got back hot we went upstairs for a swim before heading out for our cruise on a yacht.

      We went down to the old port via the scary cable car, and waited for our boat. Once on board we headed out, first stop is the volcano, unfortunately I didn’t have walking shoes so I didn’t have to walk the hour in the heat, up to the top. Lucky Pete did so he could take the photos and tell me the history.
      When we moved on we went to an area by boat that had hot springs. Great fun jumping in the sea, once I talked myself into it!! We swam down a narrow section to where there was warm water and the red mud that they say is good for you. Then back to the boat, and we headed off to the next port where we moored and ate dinner and swam a bit more.

      We headed to another area after dinner and watched the amazing sunset. It was a bit windy and the boat rocked a bit but it was very romantic and we arrived back at the port, tired but happy.

      Went to the cable car to return back to the apartment but was told the cable car was undergoing maintenance. 😩😩 ok so we went and had a drink and snack at a bar at the port until we saw the cable car moving. So off we went to the station, we were the only ones there. We had to sit and wait while they pottered around starting and stopping the engines and conversing in Greek with lots of hand shaking. I was not feeling confident when they finally said ok you can get on now🤨🤨 so I asked are we going to die, they laughed and one of the men got on with us and said we die together!!

      Obviously we didn’t die, though I was really glad to have my feet back on the ground. We walked home and collapsed into bed. Another day in paradise.      Les mer

      Good bye, Santorini

      Es ist wieder so weit. Der Graf setzt im Bordradio seine Segel und wir verlassen die Caldera der vielleicht schönsten Insel im Mittelmeer.

      Für uns ein doppelter Abschied, denn morgen gehen wir ein letztes Mal von Bord und fliegen zurück nach Hause. 😢Les mer

      Wanderer, kommst Du nach Thira (und liest diese Zeilen), so nimm NICHT das Cable Car!

      Egal, was Einheimische und „erfahrene“ Besucher Dir erzählen: nach 90 Minuten mit Hunderten anderer Reisender eingepfercht in dem (eigentlich) kurzen Anstieg zur Bergstation gewinnt eine Herde grantelnder Esel definitiv gegenüber der Horde aggressiv drängelnder Touristen. Und mag der Ausblick noch so interessant sein!Les mer

      Abschied

      Die Zeit an Bord ist viel zu schnell vergangen.

      Von Palma über Barcelona, Rom, Neapel, Sizilien, Malta, Athen bis nach Santorini war Kabine 11001 unser gemütliches Zuhause und Nielzon & Harry haben nicht nur mit ihrem Bettwäsche-Origami dafür gesorgt, dass wir uns während der gesamten Reise sehr wohl gefühlt haben.

      Mit einer gehörigen Portion Wehmut verabschieden wir uns von der Crew, die im Theater Ihre Abschiedsvorstellung gibt.
      969 Besatzungsmitglieder aus 45 Nationen, die stressfrei und entspannt nebeneinander Hand in Hand gearbeitet haben, um uns einen unvergesslichen Urlaub zu bereiten.      Les mer

      Santorini

      We got up early so we could see the ship arriving at Santorini, which is a complex of 5 islands. The main one we visited today has 25000 residents,
      3 are uninhabited with dark lava at the base and white pumice at the top.(One of these is an active volcano..last activity in 1950)
      The other island is called Little Santorini and has 300 inhabitants.
      Santorini is a caldera.. (which our guide defined as the area of land and sea created around a volcanic crater after an eruption) . Originally Santorini was circular but after the volcano exploded around 1650BC the centre sank leaving a ring of islands.
      The ash layer crater created an excellent building material that when mixed with lime becomes very strong. This was mined and used in building the Suez canal, the Port of Alexandria among other things.
      Our first stop was the tiny town of Megalochori, a village of 500 people, famous for its clocktowers and pistachio trees.. all the homes have heavy wooden doors originally for safety against pirates.
      As we drove through the countryside our guide told us Santorini has over 600 churches.. most of them family owned. Most locals own their own family church
      70% of the island's agriculture comes from grape vines.. they don't get watered, just absorb water at night, and are pruned low to the ground in a basket shape to protect the grapes from the high winds. They also have fava beans, pistachio, fig, olives.
      Santorini has no rivers or lakes, so they only use rain water, but have very little rainfall, water is imported from Crete.
      Next stop was Oia- the most picturesque village in Santorini. It was the first major port till after the 1956 earthquake. We wandered the cute streets for a couple of hours. Then headed to Fira, the capital (as opposed to Thira, the official name of the island)
      Trev and I decided to brave the local buses and find our way to the other side of the island to Perissa, a beach with black volcanic sands. It was novel.. but it's not like our Aussie beaches 😊 Worth the trip though to meet some locals and see the non touristy bits of the island.      Les mer

      Santorin

      Heute morgen um 07:00 Uhr Ankunft in Santorin. Das Schiff liegt ca. 500m vom kleinen Hafen Thira entfernt und die Tenderboote bringen die Reisenden an Land, die Santorin zu Fuß erkunden möchten.
      Nach oben auf die Insel kommt man von hier entweder mit der Seilbahn oder zu Fuß oder per Esel über die sogenannten "Donky Steps", die Eselstreppen.
      Wir haben uns das Ganze erst mal nur kurz von unten angeschaut, da wir heute Nachmittag noch eine größere Tour inklusive Weingutbesichtigung geplant haben.      Les mer

      Next Stop - der Vulkan

      Am Morgen ging meine Reise per Schiff weiter. Ich war gut fünf Stunden zwischen griechischen Inseln unterwegs, mit kurzem Halt auf den Inseln Paros und Naxos. Mein Ziel, Santorini. Traumhafte Insel im Ägäischen Meer oder aktiver Vulkan, wo die Menschen direkt auf dem Krater leben.
      Die Insel ist eigentlich ein Vulkan, dessen Kraterrand vor ca. 3600 Jahren zum Teil einstürzte und vom Meer geflutet wurde. Weiße Häuser und Kirchen mit blauen Kuppeln schmiegen sich an die Steilküste aus schwarzem und rotem Vulkangestein, die bis zu 300 Meter aus dem Meer ragt. Die Sonnenuntergänge sollen spektakulär sein.
      Ein Geheimtipp ist Santorini auf keinen Fall mehr, im Sommer ist hier richtig was los. Nicht nur Sonnenhungrige Urlauber, sondern vor allem Passagiere von Kreuzfahrtschiffen fallen über die Insel her.
      Im Dezember ist alles etwas verschlafen, viele Restaurants und Geschäfte sind geschlossen. Selbst ein Teil der Geldautomaten ist außer Betrieb.
      Nachdem ich meine Herberge bezogen hatte, habe ich mich auf den Weg gemacht, Firá, die Hauptstadt der Insel, zu erkunden. Tolle Wege direkt am Kraterrand, mit großartigen Ausblicken aufs Meer. Und jede Menge Treppen muss man bewältigen.
      Hungern muss ich nicht, ich habe bei meinem Spaziergang auch noch eine Taverne entdeckt, außer lecker Essen gab es den ersten Ouzo und eine Frühstücksloctation habe ich auch entdeckt. Falls ich die am Morgen wieder finde, bei den vielen kleinen verwinkelten Gassen.      Les mer

Das Erlebnis ist phantastisch, die Dramaturgie ist zwar mehr als dürftig, aber im Ernst wir sind ja nicht hier um Shakespeare zu gucken, gelle. Ein echter Hingucker alsoLes mer

      Santorini

      We cruised over to the remarkable volcano that became the islands of Santorini.There are several chunks of land that mark the outer cinder cone resulting from the explosion/eruption followed by a devastating earthquake in the late 1900’s that destroyed most of the remaining structures on the islands. They have , or are, rebuilding the entire island infrastructure as faithful reproductions if their history. When we first arrived on the cruise ship we witnessed the sunrise as it lit up the stark white buildings up on the rim of the cliffs when viewed from a thousand feet below. It was very dramatic! And as we first saw the trail up to the town with its’ extremely steep switchbacks with people and donkeys carrying tourists up the cliff it was very intimidating, and impressive.

      We took a boat tender across the l island to a port where large buses could negotiate other steep switchbacks, but nothing like the donkey trail! We visited a winery briefly and then toured the rest of the island. Gorgeous scenery, but way too crowded for its 15,000 residents’ infrastructure. Especially with 4 huge cruise ships anchored off shore and all tendering in at the same time. I      Les mer
