Colorado welcomed us home with sunny blue skies, warm days, and a landscape decked out in vibrant autumn color. It was a great adventure, and now it feels oh-so-good to be home!

Proud of my minimalist backpack

We are home. I’m unpacking and celebrating that I was able to carry my backpack for 30 days and fit everything I needed for the range of weather conditions on this journey.

I saw thousands of people with big roller suitcases and so the experiment of seeing if I could happily live with the small space was going to be possible and it was. I’m thinking my pack weighed about 20 or so pounds which is not that much. And I did not buy a lot of souvenirs … garlic and seeds for our farmer kids to plant. A hat for me and my daughter made by a weaver at a farmers market and coffee and cookies and some spices. I also bought a few postcards and soaps.

We returned to a nearby wildfire over our ridge. It’s 82 degrees and the forests are alive with colors as the oak and cottonwoods are in full color change. I feel like I came home to a party put on by Nature.

And to top it off our dear Green Couple friends picked us up curbside at the airport and took us back to their home for a welcomed sleep before we started our drive back. Thank you Diane & Glenn.

Podróżnik Welcome home you two! And thank you for the show and tell of your backpack. So you had two pairs of shoes is that correct? And essentially four outfits? and you were not kidding about watching people with the rolling suitcases. They’re a nightmare on cobblestones and I’m so glad I didn’t have to drag one on my trip. Thank you for all the pictures and videos and commentary. This was great fun😃

Podróżnik Yes. Allbirds shoes. sketchers sandals. 4 outfits. 3 undies. 2 bras. Pj top/bottom. Swimsuit. Scarf. Buff. Gloves. Sweater. Fleece. Raincoat. Umbrella. Knee brace, in case ( lightweight like a sock) 3 socks (1 compression sock) journal. Vitamin bag. ER meds. Toiletries. (I left my full makeup bag at home 🤣) snack bag. Never travel without snacks.

Podróżnik Oh, and since I’m mentioning everything I brought… I had one of those secret pouches that I kept on my waist underneath my clothes that had my drivers license and my passport. I wore this all the time. Also my purse for easy in and out plus money. I had this with me when I left my backpack in the room. I would change the type of purse next time.

Geneva for a couple of hours

We fly home tomorrow. We arrived at our airport hotel around 4 and jumped on the free bus toward the Old Town, did a brisk walk to see the beautiful Saint-Pierre Cathedral and grab a quick bite. I’m behind on photos and stories from the past few days but I’ve been hiking to the Edge of The World and more… so I have a good excuse. I wanted to get some of these photos up before I close my eyes.

Geneva is a lovely city. It does not feel crowded and I saw virtually no graffiti. It seemed clean with no trash in the streets. People are dressed so nice with gorgeous coats. They drive like madmen and between the cars, motorcycles and bikes you have to really watch crossing the street. This mom was at a busy intersection with her very tired looking child. Sixt-Fer-A-Cheval: A Lovely Place

We spent our last full morning yesterday wandering around the lovely little mountain town of Sixt-Fer-A-Cheval. This is probably the only place I’ve been that I felt I most at home at - no crowds, gorgeous mountain scenery with sweet old buildings, lots of hiking trails … my kind of place. I hiked to the end of the world!

We had the immense delight of spending some time in the French Alps hamlet of Sixt-Fer-A-Cheval today, and then hiking the End of the World trail near the Cirque du Fer a Cheval. What a magnificent place to hike, with numerous waterfalls all around. The trail ended with a steep climb to the base of a line of mountain ridges that form the border between France and Switzerland. The cirque is part of the Sixt-Passy National Nature Preserve and was a wonderful place to enjoy a simple lunch of cheese, baguette and apples. A long stretch of warm weather delayed the arrival of fall-like temps, so the mostly deciduous forests in these mountains - so different than Colorado’s mountains of predominantly coniferous forests - are just showing a hint of color. Today was really the first day since arriving in Europe a month ago that felt like fall - which is one of my top four favorite seasons. Czytaj więcej

Now these are the Alps I’ve always heard about. Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps and Western Europe at 4809 meters (15,778 feet), is an impressive mountain. We are visiting friends who live in the very picturesque - and pleasantly uncrowded right now - mountain town of Samoens. They took us on a hike to a place with a spectacular 360 degree mountain view for the sunset, with snowy Mont Blanc as the highlight. Czytaj więcej

Sun Part 3 I will remember

This local coffee shop with local made butter for the baguette and maybe the best coffee of my life ( although it did compete with Dave’ chai) was a moment in time that I hope I never forget. It was so much more than the food and drink.

It may have been the food…but then there was the young couple in my view holding hands over their croissants. And the French family having breakfast outside and the happiest grandmother being loved on by three grands. Oh and the couple running the store were the sweetest and kept saying “Walla” when they served someone.

But mostly I think I’ll remember that smiling man across the baguette from me telling me what he was grateful for this morning. Yes, I’ll remember.

Later in the day we headed out to walk by the lake and since it is Sunday everyone is out and about. Parents and babies! Grandparents and lots of wheels. It was lovely to stroll with the locals and some tourists I bet too. Czytaj więcej

Well, today’s market in Annecy France topped it all. There was no way for me to take more photos. Not shown are breads. Cakes. Jams. And more. Take my word it was over the top wow.
