Ursula started early morning walks with Cathy back at Gwalior. Today Peter and Tony come along. Quite a middle class area. Neat houses. A few very feral looking pigs.
Didn’t mention the shower at the previous place. First morning Tony’s was south of luke-warm. Ursula’s was cold. There was a switch in the bathroom marked ‘geyser’. We think it needed to be on, not inadvertently switched off with the light. Here at Laxmi Vilas Palace Tony’s first shower is a luke-warm trickle with the handle rammed hard over to the hot side. Next day he tries the middle. Good flow and temperature.
First up today we visit Fatehpur Sikri, a big fort. From near the end of the 15th century Mughal settlers (descended from the hordes of Genghis Khan) controlled the site. One of the most powerful Mughal kings was Akbar. He had 3 wives. One Hindu, one Muslim and one Christian. He was very broad minded. He wanted to work out a synthesis of all religions. His treatment of Hindus was very tolerant. He tried to find a new religion, based on the good points of all religions. Pity it didn’t stick, probably because he did not believe in enforcing his religious views onto the populace. He had daughters but no sons. A holy man told him he and his wives should walk from Agra to Gwalior and drink a few potions to beget sons. The Hindu wife was the only one who agreed to the 67 km walk. Of course, she bore a son soon after. Akbar was overjoyed. He promoted her to foremost among the wives and decided Gwalior should now be the new capital of India. He made most of the population of Agra move to Gwalior. It was capital for 15 years, until the water supply ran out.
Later in the afternoon we visit the bird sanctuary. Our guide is a naturalist who is enthusiastic and knows all the creatures here very well. He sets up a very powerful telescope on a tripod so we can see particular specimens. He is expert at taking photos with our phones through the telescope. See pics.
We travel into the park by bicycle rickshaw. Quiet. 2 km of dry land then wetlands where most of the birds are. We took a few photos. At the end of the trip our guide marred the moment by asking us individually and quite forcefully for a tip. He didn’t seem to believe that Manoj would reimburse him sufficiently. Jaipur tomorrow. Tony’s sister Charmian lives there.Read more
