Cliffs of Moher

When we arrived at the Cliffs of Moher, things were looking bad. The fog was so thick we only had a few meters of visibility. Gerard, now much less optimistic, still thought we might get lucky and proposed we cancel the lunch stop, have something to eat at the visitor center instead and stay an extra hour to increase our chances of the day clearing up.

Everyone agreed to the idea, got off the bus and we found our way to the visitor center to have an early lunch before venturing out to the cliffs themselves.

The grass abruptly ended in a white wall of fog so thick you could've almost cut it with a knife. It is easy to imagine how someone could just walk straight off the edge to their deaths 140-200m further down on such a day if it wasn't for the barrier that kept people back.

In the distance, we could barely make out the shape of O'Brien's tower near the midpoint of the cliffs, so we directed our steps there, photographing the little we could see.Read more

On the road again to Clare

Left Ballyvourney and headed to Shannon Airport to drop cousin Paul there for his flight back to the US. We will miss Paul and his great enthusiasm for our Irish ancestors and cousins and our hometown.
On our way to Galway and Connemara for the next few days.Along the way we will see the Cliffs of Moher and get our first glimpse of the west coast of Ireland.Read more

Nach zwei Stunden Erkundungszeit geht es zurück zum Bus und ab nach Galway.Read more

Nachdem wir um 7 Uhr Ortszeit in Dublin gelandet sind und unsern Mietwagen 🚗 in Empfang genommen haben, ging es auf zu den „Cliffs of Moher“. Die Klippen an der Atlantikküste, bieten bei schönem Wetter einen fantastischen Ausblick auf die schroffe Küste, sowie auf den offenen Ocean 🌊. Beides blieb uns allerdings dank Starkregen 🌧 und Orkanböen 🌪 verwehrt.... Nun muss es wohl ein Guinness richten...oder zwei 🍻😄Read more

Cliffs of Moher

We keep driving and the scenery become wilder and, if possible, greener. We are heading towards an area of sediment rock (basically dead fish 😂), a sort of Irish version of the Grand Canyon. And we will soon see the world-famous Cliffs of Moher!!! 🤩 I thought it was just a name, but Sean explains that Moher means "ruins" in Irish.

We enter a huge parking place in a wasteland. Sean explains that we will have to climb up to see the cliffs and warns us to stay away from the cliff edges and to be ready to face a veeeeeery strong wind. Well... I'm not sure what the defition of that wind should be, but "strong" definitely doesn't convey the idea. As soon as we get of the bus, we are hit by a chilly wind blowing at crazy speed and the situation only gets worse the more we proceed towards the Ocean.

At a certain point the wind gets so strong that I have to hide behind Ludo not to be blown away. Well, not only he proves to be a great wind shield, but other people follow my example and he suddenly ends up having a line of three totally unknown people behind him!

Leaving aside the improvable weather conditions (actually it´s even sunny, but the wind is just unbearable), the view from the top is simply breathtaking: for 14 kilometers 200-meter high cliffs fall into the stormy ocean with a perfectly vertical rock wall.

It is possible to walk alongside the cliff edge as far as a lighthouse to the North and a watch tower to the South. Luckily, the initial part of the walk also has some barriers, because the combination of with and height make the walk look extremely and, honestly, dangerous. Even by not walking too close to the edge, we can still take pretty good shots of this natural wonder and the 2-hour time we were given by Sean literally flies...

Once back on the bus, I google out of curiosity if anybody ever fell from this cliffs. Well, apparently there were 66 casualties in the last 27 years! Luckily I didn´t check the stats before venturing there...Read more

Burren

Der Burren ist eine nackte Felslandschaft, geprägt und geschaffen durch die letzte Eiszeit. Obwohl keine Humusschicht vorhanden ist, die eine höhere Vegetation ermöglichen würde, wächst in allen Ritzen der Felsen (Spalten des abfließenden Gletscherwassers) die unterschiedlichsten Blumenarten, z. T. tropische Pflanzen , ja sogar Orchideen. Eine Botaniker hat mal mehr als 240 Blumensorten gezählt.
Wir standen in dieser Nacht ganz allein im Naturschutzgebiet „Burren“. Diese Nacht war Rabenschwarz, aber leider war es bewölkt und keine Sterne ⭐️ zu sehen.Read more

Cliffs of Insanity

I am not a huge Princess Bride fan but Tyler is. The Cliffs of Insanity are a part of the movie and are the Cliffs of Moher. This was the second part of the tour. Another selling feature of the 10 hour tour was that it allowed you to see the cliffs from the ferry boat before taking you to view them from the top.

We left Inisheer (Inis Oírr) and headed for the cliffs. Now we had sucky seats in the ferry boat as we got in line too late. (And by too late we were 10 minutes early than we were supposed to be in the line up🤦🏻‍♀️). But we still got to go up top and see the magnificent view. Just wow.

Then we travelled to the top of the cliffs and also wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Patrick also told us that there are about 15 days out of the year when the view from the cliffs and today was one of them. This is unusual for me as I have the worst luck and usually get fog and rain when I try to see cool sites.Read more

Looking good, feeling brrr

Today is the longest stretch of our road trip! Driving from The Mackeral (up past Donegal) to Adare Manor (south of Limerick), about 4.5 hours of driving straight through.

We got up nice and early.. 8am (we are on vacation ya know!) and hit the open road. Stopping in a little seaside town of Bundoran and getting breakfast, a full Irish for Igor and an avocado and black pudding salad for me!

From there we were onward to the cliffs of moher! One of the most recommended stops on our trip and they did not disappoint! And as the friendly Canadian walking by us said "ya know deh don't call it the wild Atlantic way for no reason".

After getting sufficiently lashed by the wind we are off to Adare Manor for 2 nights to enjoy some Ireland luxury 🙌Read more

Kelly Family visit /Brigid’s crosses

Tonight we were invited for a meal with the Kelly family ( delicious) and a local friend Helen Gordon picked rushes and showed us how to weave our own Brigid’s cross.
We also had a personal tour of the local cultural center with Joe Kelly as our guide.
Joe is currently exhibiting some of his sculptures made of local bog wood some of it thousands of years old. He is also exhibiting paintings.Read more
