      Lake Como!

      June 3, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Ari and I arrived at Lake Como a few days earlier than anticipated. We spent one night at the northern most tip of the lake in a rather sleepy town whos name I can’t recall. After a night there we thought we’d enjoy a slightly larger town. We hopped a 4 hour slow ferry to the town of Como. It was a wonderful tour of the lake, and the ferry was empty when we got on. By the time we got off, people were crammed in every corner of that boat, sitting on the floor or anywhere they could find a place! We had to keep our butts glued to the seat if we wanted to keep them! We grabbed a hostel the first night in Como and ended up meeting a few very neat people to hang out with for a couple days while we awaited Cory and Sig’s arrival! 3 days in Como, and then we went to Bellagio to link up with Cory and Sig! Bellagio meant good wine, good food and great views! And some stellar hiking to boot.Read more

      Balagio

      October 11, 2023 in Italy ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

Today we drove around the lake to get a different view. Still stunning but much mister than yesterday. First stop Menaggio for a gelato and walk before catching the car ferry to Bellagio. After checking out the shops and a bite of lunch it was off to Nesso, a quaint little town. Walked down to the Nesso bridge and waterfall then drove back to Como along the narrow winding road. Thank goodness Ian was driving.Read more

      Como city

      July 20, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Our second day in Italy was a day trip to Lake Como and Lake Lugano, and we had an excellent time.
Our itinerary was thus: we travelled with a tour group from Milan to Como city, boarded a huge ferry and floated around the lake for two and a half hours, hopped off at Bellagio for an hour and a half, hopped back onto a different ferry for ten minutes to the other side of the lake, hopped back on the bus to Lugano, wandered around for an hour and a half, and then went back to Milan. Lovely lovely day.Read more

    • Day 17

      George Clooney country

      August 17, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

Another beautiful day in paradise. The hot temperatures and humidity had dropped off after last nights rain resulting in perfect weather. Our friends have a house in Como where they normally live which is about 1:15 hours from their holiday house in Gravedona. Today they had things to do in Como so we tagged along and while they did their business we looked around the city and lakeside areas of Como. This is the main city in the Lake Como area with a population of about half a million. It is located at the southern end of the lefthand or western branch of Lake Como and is a busy boating and tourist city.
George Clooney has a house about 15km north of Como. Villa Oleandra is situated in one of the most beautiful areas of Lake Como and is large villa that is not visible from the road but can be seen clearly from the water and the ferries passing by.
Carolina has been waiting for George to invite us for coffee or drinks with him at his villa, but from our experiences in Italy so far we realise that either his invitation to us or the information he should have received about our visit here, has most likely been mislaid or misdirected. We know he will be sorry to have missed catching up with us this time but hopefully he will come to see us in Noosa sometime instead. So today we drove past his villa and did not drop in to see him as we did not want to surprise him too much.
Como was again very busy with summer tourists. Sara kindly dropped us off in the city centre and we planned to catch the hydrofoil ferry back to Gravedona at 4:10pm in the afternoon. While Carolina went shopping, Peter stood in a queue at the ferry ticket office for an hour, only to find out that’s this ferry had been cancelled today (this is Italy). So Sara picked us up again when she was leaving to return to Gravedona. In the meantime had a nice time looking around Como for about 3 hours, but it was nice to get way from the crowds and head back to the quieter northern areas of Lake Como.

      Como

      May 1, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

      Ciao ciao Svizzera 👋

Unser erster Stopp inkl.

      Cathedral of Como

      September 28, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Today was a mixed weather day so we checked out the stunning Cattedrale Di Santa Maria Assunta, Duomo Di Como. This is the last Gothic cathedral built in Italy with construction starting in 1396, and it was not completed until 1770. The stained glass windows were amazing and the beautiful elaborate blue ceiling was breathtaking. It certainly rates up there with some of the best we have seen.Read more

      Como

      October 1, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

We walked to the bus from the La Spezia hotel, setting off for Como via the outskirts of Milan. It was about a four hour trip and we arrived at our hotel at lunchtime. We dropped our bags and set off for a walk around the old city of
Como, spending an hour enjoying lunch in the old city. We spent some time in a street market full of antiques, some of which seemed very old and potentially quite valuable. We had a look through the magnificent old cathedral that is located in the location of the old Roman city ruins, the street level of which is three metres lower than the current level. Como has been sinking for the last 2000 years because it was built on marshlands.
We caught the funicular up to the town on the high hill above Como in order to enjoy the panoramic views, although it was a bit hazy which limited what we could see. The humidity accounted for the haze, which hung around for our entire stay in the region.
We enjoyed dinner in town, celebrating Eliza Yorks birthday at the same time, and grabbing a gelato for dessert on our walk back to the hotel. Another great day, this time in northern Italy.

      Lake Cafe, Como

      October 1, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

We continued our walk around the harbour and sampled a fritelle sempilici, similar to a flat donut covered in sugar. A warm and tasty treat to enjoy on a cooler day.

After checking out some of the buildings and monuments we made our back to the Duomo Piazza where we did a mini bar hop, with our last stp being front row seats at Lake Caffe, where we could admire the Duomo while enjoying a couple of cocktails. We do love how drinks in Italy are often accompanied by complementary snacks. These snacks, like today, end up being lunch as they can be quite substantial and filling. It was a lovely way to spend our last afternoon in Como.

After a very relaxing afternoon we decided on take away arancini for dinner back in our apartment, which was delicious, before ducking out for our daily gelato fix. Can it get any better than this.??!!

Como has been a great stop for the last five days. We didn’t get out on the ferries as much as we would have liked due to the sometimes ordinary conditions, but the weather Gods are smiling and the next couple of weeks are looking good.

      Tomorrow we head to Parma.

Travel Day 4 back to Como

      May 18, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

We began our day with urgent phone calls to American Airlines and American Express. Gabe requested an upgraded seat on the flight home and when he did that it changed all of our seats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So hopefully that gets sorted out. Have I mentioned I really want to come home ?
After breakfast we walked over to the Arena. The line was so long. So we just took a look from the outside. We will have to rain check a tour of that later. It’s really cool. Looks like a mini colosseum in Rome. It’s still used all the time today for concerts and shows. A movie is actually being filmed there right now. Then we walked over to the Castleveccio. Its a medieval castle surrounded by what was a moat. It sits on the water canal and is connected to a bridge. The bridge is called Ponte Scaligero. We walked over the bridge and walked along the canal. The water is flowing really fast.
Verona is a beautiful city. It’s not to big, walkable, has really nice stores and numerous churches and historical things to see. It defiantly deserves another visit.
We are not able to stay at this hotel another night because its sold out. There was supposed to be a Formula 1 race in Bologna on Sunday. But the rain has been causing some very serious flooding to that area and they cancelled the race. We have experienced the rain but have not seen any of the flooding. After we packed up the car we grabbed a poke bowl for lunch. Renee got a chicken sandwich from the Amsterdam Chippys place. We actually didn’t see any of those in Amsterdam. We stopped at the Basilica Santa Anastasia before we headed out of town. We drove our final 2 hours and arrived in Como around 5pm. We have a really great apartment near the Duomo. Renee and I went to the store to get a few things for dinner. Gabe has calls tonight so we are staying in.
