      Dramatic Floods

      September 29, 2019 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

In 1966 Florence was hit by a devastating flood. Over 1 million pieces of art were lost forever and 101 people were killed. It is hard to comprehend the flood but the water was 5 meters high throughout the city. The white plaque above Becky's head shows the level the water reached as does the marker post inside Santa Croce. It us almost impossible to comprehend the damage caused by the water, mixed with mud and oil, as it filled up this beautiful cityRead more

      Sights in Florence

      July 29, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Once arriving in the Livorno port, it is about a 90 minute bus ride to Florence from the cruise ship. I opted for a shore excursion through the cruise line and overall, I think it turned out to be a wise idea.

Once in Florence, we had a meeting point at Piazza Santa Croce which was within walking distance to a few of the major sites like the Palazzo Vecchio, Uffizi Museum, Ponte Vecchio, the famous Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, and Piazza del Duomo. Along the entrance to the Uffizi Museum, there were many sculptures of Renaissance men. There is also an exact replica of Michaelangelo’s sculpture of David.

      Hitting The Wall On Traveling

      October 8, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

I made up that title to grab you and you’ll hear us talk about this in today’s video but honestly we are good and navigating through the little speed bumps that arise when in another new place where people don’t speak the language and there are MASSES of tourists! And you know our lifestyle…living in Beulah, Colorado with days of not even seeing a neighbor! But we’ve got our city walking shoes on. And we topped 25,000 today.

The place I booked to stay in Florence you’ll see here in the video and photos. It’s a Sobe that is on the top floor of an old building and the marble hallway leads to our floor with high ceiling rooms plus a balcony! Mind you, clean is relative in Europe and I did have to specifically request 4 pillows. There are no blankets… it’s hot and we sleep with a sheet. If you want more towels it’s $3 each. This was rated an 8 of 10 on booking.Com and the Innkeeper from Bombay was so nice at check in. We are a 30 min walk to train station and we’ve been out after dark and feel safe. Upon Diane and Glenn’s recommendation we carry our passports and ID in our secret lockdown belts! I
We feel good about supporting the local innkeepers rather than the corporate hotels plus we have sweet interactions that feel authentic.

I Find Places - He Gets Us There

      October 9, 2023 in Italy ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

Dave and I make a good team when traveling. My curiosity combined with his savy map skills lands us in fun places. I do have to laugh though because in some of the videos today Dave’s New Yorker sarcasm comes through which I take no offense to and he means no unkindness by. But it’s funny to hear.

There’s a hilarious photo of the kids at the table next to us asleep. O the joys of travel with teens!!! I’m not sure if they were on strike or really asleep.

Plus the lovely table sold us on lunch at this real Italy eatery. A lunch I will remember.

There’s more too: walking to the bus station we came upon a farmer selling cheese, bread and meat in a neighborhood! We passed by lots of fruit veggie stores. The strawberries looked yummy. Getting the bus ticket was a learning curve but 1.70 per trip was a deal and took us to a fairyland place. I loved today. And spending it with Dave.

      Well, Ciao Pilgrim!

      June 22, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 91 °F

After our walking tour in Florence (“Firenze” to us now), we felt we needed to do some more training for our hike, so we set out to discover a few historical landmarks. We found the Ponte Vecchio (which translates to “Old Bridge”), built in 1345 to cross the Arno River and is one of many engineering achievements in Florence from the Middle Ages. People still live in apartments on that bridge!

We became a bit turned around and lost for an hour or so, but finally found the Basilica of Santa Croce, sometimes called, “the Mausoleum of Italy.” There were so many people dying to get in, that we felt lucky enough to skip the line and walk our Credenziale del Pellegrino (Pilgrim Credential/Passport for The Way of Saint Frances) up for our very first pilgrim stamp. We didn’t feel a thing… and only 35 more to go!

We even fit in a little tour of Dante’s childhood home. And, that place was no joke! It was hell to get there. (That’s divine comedy, people!)

After paying our respects at the tombs of Galileo Galilei, Machiavelli and Michelangelo, we left the cathedral ready to carbo-load today and hike tomorrow.

p.s. If anyone reading this post is worried about our mapping skills (Travis, Jen R, our families, the citizens of Italy…), don’t worry! We are too.

      Giotto's Bell Tower

      June 13, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

The Bell tour for the Cathedral of Florence is actually a self standing structure. It is not connected to the Cathedral in any way. It's base is just 47.41 ft in both width and depth and stands 277.9 ft tall. Emily and David purchased tickets to climb to the top via 414 narrow stairs of 2 way traffic.

      The views were amazing!

The views were amazing. There was also an option to climb the Cathedral of Florence' s dome, but opted to see the Dome from afar instead. You should be able to see people at the top in our final two pictures.

      Und endlich Florenz! + Weinverkostung

      July 24, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 36 °C

Tja, was soll man sagen, mein zweiter Besuch in dieser tollen Stadt.

1 Florentine (not the biccie) Day Plz

      July 26, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Today we elected to do things in the right order and do the Rick Steves walking tour to get our bearings nice and early on. We saw so many cool statues and got real warmed up from the Romans into the Renaissance (bc nothing worth talking about happened in between anyway 🙃). Highlights included more paninis (!!), making fun of the silly Instagram shots in front of the cathedral (see first image and the holy water bottle) and the most extra way to cover up breaking a statue ever (image 4). I did get heartily shamed by the Catholics for being a dirty pagan whore and wanting to enter a church with my shoulders out - even though all the ladies painted on the inside have their boobs out and are draped around for the male gaze (all the men were painted with clothes on so go figure). Anyway - I bought a €5 cover up and took a selfie with their roof so who's the real winner here.Read more

      Fontane delle Rampe del Poggi

      September 29, 2019 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

So... whilst walking down off the top of the world... we stumble upon the most amazing water falls and park. 5 tiers of waterfalls crossing 3 roads.
At the bottom is a fountain and one of the medieval towers that used to protect the city.
Well worth a visit and it's all downhill!
