      Tag 2 - Catania-Siracusa

      Heute beim Aufstehen eine kleine Ernüchterung, kein Wasser in unserem Apartment. Nach Rücksprache mit dem Besitzer kam heraus,dass in Catania immer wieder mal im Sommer das Wasser abgestellt wird. So ganz ohne Vorwarnung ganz schön blöd 😊.
      Dafür war die Nacht wesentlich angenehmer und dank Klimaanlage vorallem kühler und so konnten wir trotzdem frisch in den Tag starten.

      Zuerst gings zur Metro, nur standen wir kurz vor halb neun noch vor verschlossenen Türen. Was ist denn das für eine Metro bitte? Schnell stellte sich allerdings heraus, dass nur der unserem Apartment nächstgelegene Eingang verschlossen war,der Eingang 100m weiter allerdings schon geöffnet war.

      Nach 2 Stationen stiegen wir bei Stesicoro aus und gingen erstmal Richtung Piazza del Duomo. Am Weg dorthin fanden wir ein nettes Café, wo wir erstmal frühstückten. Dann erkundeten wir den Fisch- und Gemüsemarkt und zum Abschluss des Vormittags noch das Teatro Antico.

      Anschließend gings gegen Mittag zurück zum Apartment um unsere Koffer zu holen und dann fuhren wir zum Flughafen um bei Europcar unseren Mietwagen abzuholen. Das erste Mal im Leben, dass ich mir einen Leihwagen im Ausland miete 😁

      Das Prozedere bei Europcar ging reibungslos und zügig von statten und kurz vor 13.00 hielten wir den Schlüssel unseres Fiat 500 in Händen. Was für ein süßes Kerlchen, das wir sogleich "Giuseppe" tauften.

      Nach einem Check aller wichtigen Funktionen gings los Richtung Syrakus. Zum Glück fahre ich auch zuhause einen Fiat und so wurden die ersten knapp 70km von Catania nach Syrakus ohne Probleme gemeistert.

      Auch den von unserem Hotel angegebenen Parkplatz - dem Parecchio Talete - finden wir auf Anhieb. Ich würde sagen - erste Sizilien-Autofahrt läuft 😊.

      Unser Hotelzimmer (Apollo Suite) ist mitten im Herzen Syrakus (auf der Halbinsel Ortiga), direkt gegenüber des Apollo-Tempels. Zentraler geht es nicht! Da es wieder extrem heiß ist machen wir uns nach dem Einchecken erstmal wieder auf zum nächstgelegenen Strand. Beim Fonte Aretusa werden wir fündig und dieser Strand ist nur ein paar gehminuten entfernt. Es ist ein Mini-Sandabschnitt und leider völlig schattenlos, aber mit direktem Meerzugang. Hier verbringen wir bis etwa 17.15. Anschließend machen wir uns etwas frisch und gegen 18.00 machen wir noch eine Hop on-Hop off Tour um die wichtigsten Plätze Syrakus (Diana Brunnen, Teatro antico etc.) kennenzulernen.
      Ich muss sagen,die Stadt gefällt uns ausgesprochen gut und hat jede Menge Flair, auch wenn die Tour selbst kein Highlight ist.

      Am Abend flanieren wir noch durch die kleine Gassen, essen herrvoragend in einem Fischrestaurant und lassen den Abend in netter Atmosphäre ausklingen. Ein durchaus gelungener Tag 😊      Read more

      Day 43

      Ortigia

      Am Freitag dem 13. Mai machen wir uns mit den Velos auf in das ca. 7 km entfernte Ortigia, ein Stadtteil auf einer Insel bei Syrakus. Wunderschön ist die Gegend, wiederum ein UNESCO Weltkulturerbe, jedoch bei näherem Hinsehen, fällt auf, dass zahlreiche Häuser dringend eine Renovation gebrauchen könnten, denn teilweise wachsen sogar Blumen aus den Wänden und der Verputz fällt flächendeckend ab. Das letzte Mal habe ich so etwas auf Kuba gesehen. Schade finden wir. Ortigia ist wirklich charmant, hoffen wir, dass da Gelder für die Renovationen zur Verfügung gestellt werden. Erfreulicherweise ist auch gerade Markt und in einem kleinen Restaurant essen wir superleckeres Antipasti und die für Sizilien bekannten Aranchini, das sind kegelförmige Reisbällchen gefüllt mit Schinken, Fleisch, Gemüse und Käse oder Fisch.
      Leider fährt Werner auf der Rückfahrt einen Platten ein, aber Glück im Unglück nur ca. 1 km vom Camping Platz entfernt. Da Werner fast ein Rennradprofi ist, wie die Jungs vom Giro, die wir auf dem Ätna vorbeiflitzen gesehen hatten, ist der platte Reifen in null Komma Nix wieder flottgemacht.

      Am 15.05.2022 besuchen wir die Salinen nicht weit von unserem Campingplatz entfernt. Die Salinen sind gerade Visasvis von Ortigia und bieten einen wunderbaren Blick auf die Altstadt. Seit 1984 ist es ein Vogelschutzgebiet und es hat auch etliche Ornithologen, die da herumstreifen, aber Vögel beobachten kann man nicht wirklich, da man nirgends zum Wasser runter kommt.       Teste di Moro - Moors Heads of Sicily

      I, like many people, have fallen in love with one of Sicily’s icons, the Teste di Moro, the Sicilian Moors Heads. These are one of the most ornamental attributes of this land, often present in the form of ceramic decorations adorning the balconies, steps and window bays in the old villas of the island.

      There are a few legends surrounding these with the legend surrounded by mystery, romance and revenge the most accepted. The story unfolds in the Arab quarter of Palermo in the little town of Kalsa during 1100AD when the Moors had conquered Sicily. During this time, the Moors built ceramic workshops all over the island while introducing new techniques consisting of new shapes and colors of majolica to the local Sicilians.

      As the legend goes, there lived a beautiful young maiden with silky black hair and eyes the color of the sea of Palermo who spent her days cultivating and caring for the plants of her balcony. Young women were unable to go out alone at this time in Sicily, so the balcony served as a glimpse of freedom. One day, a wealthy young Moorish merchant noticed the young woman and instantly became captivated by her rare beauty and declared his love for her. Flattered and moved by his passion, she surrendered her love and virtue to him. Dishonored and stripped of her virtue, the young maiden soon learned the Moro would return to his country where his wife and children waited for him. Blinded by rage and heartache, the young woman waited until nightfall for him to fall asleep. She crept into the kitchen and returned to the bedroom with a knife, where she decapitated her beloved so he could never leave her again. The morning after, she turned his head into pot, filling it with basil, a symbol of passion and royalty, where it adorned her other plants on her balcony. The “pot” grew lush, so as to arouse the envy of the local residents who ordered the construction of similar vessels, in the form of dark brown.

      Today these ornamental vases, worked in ceramics and hand-painted by master craftsmen, are a very auspicious symbol for the residences of the Sicilians and they come in so many different styles and sizes. Ranging from over €600 to more affordable prices, they are certainly eye-catching. I just love how they are all very unique and adorn so many of the town’s walls, buildings and stairs.       Exploring Ortigia, Sicily

      After the markets we explored more of the streets of Ortigia, just wandering down interesting laneways, following the fountains, admiring the shops fronts and buildings. It is such a pretty town and it is so nice not having to rush anywhere and just take it all in.

      Ortigia is a town of artists and the streets and lanes display their work. There are so many unique pieces and I so wish we had pieces like these back home. From cute and quirky paper mache sculptures and lamps, traditional Moors heads, ceramic and glass fish inspired pieces to the bold and modern ceramics and unique jewellery, this town has it all. It is a feast to the eyes and photos just can’t capture it all.      Read more

      Ankommen in Syrakus

      Nach einem ausgiebigen Mittagsschlaf habe ich etwas die Stadt erkundet.
      Es gab etliche römische Ruinen (z.B. Apollotempel) und natürlich viele alte große Kirchen. Die mich aber nicht mehr so gereizt haben. Syrakus ist auch sehr touristisch. Aber noch im Rahmen und oft niveauvoll. Neben überteuerten Touristenläden und Restaurants gibt es einfache Minimärkte mit guten Preisen.
      Zum Essen habe ich ein einfaches Couscous von einem netten Aegypter gewählt. Nicht-Italienische Restaurants gibt es hier sehr wenig.

      SYRAKUS

      Die an Geschichte und Kunst reiche Stadt Syrakus stellt noch heute das Herz der Anwesenheit der griechischen Zivilisation in Sizilien dar. Syrakus war die wichtigste Stadt von Magna Graecia. 413 n.Chr. besiegte sie die mächtigen Athener und war die Heimat vieler grosser Griechen, einschliesslich des einzigartigen Archimedes. In ihrer wirtschaftlichen, politischen und militärischen Blütezeit zählte die Stadt 300‘000 Einwohner und war laut Cicero „die grösste griechische Stadt sowie die schönste aller Städte“. Sie ist für ihre labyrinthartigen Gässchen sowie ihre Ausgrabungen im Parco archeologico della Neapolis bekannt.

      Sehenswürdigkeiten: Piazza Duomo, Dom Santa Maria delle Colonne, Parco archeologico della Neapolis, Fontana di Diana

      Unsere Eindrücke: Syrakusa mit seinen in der Altstadt "Ortygia" verwinkelten Gässchen und dem Parco Archeologico ist wirklich sehenswert. Die Grösse des Amphitheaters ist beeindruckend!
