Day 51: Pontificio Santuario della Scala

      January 25 in Italy ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

Eye-opening! We have never expected that we could find the holy stairs here. Unfortunately we didn’t take pictures inside as people are praying on the holy stairs. In the video, you could see barely prayers are moving up the stairs slowly. Highly recommend to visit this place in person to feel the holy stairs. Prayers climbed the stairs with their knees.

The Scala Sancta (English: Holy Stairs, Italian: Scala Santa) are a set of 28 white marble steps located in an edifice on extraterritorial property of the Holy See in Rome, Italy proximate to the Archbasilica of Saint John in Laterano.

      Bioparco Roma in Trastevere

      February 3, 2023 in Italy ⋅ 🌙 10 °C

Malo hodimo, dvakrat malo pojemo in se preko Tibere, mimo Campo de Fiori, mimo Pantheona in Fontane di Trevi preko metroja vrnemo v sobo.

Rim nas je utrudil, fizično in finančno :) Jutri še moramo do Fiumicina in letimo zvečer nazaj v Zagreb, potem pa zaslužen počitek.

Ostia Antica in Lido di Ostia

      February 2, 2023 in Italy

      Vatikan in ostalo

      February 1, 2023 in Italy

Vedno znova vzame dih velikost in mogočnost trga in same bazilike.

Slovenske Konjice - Zagreb - Rim

      January 30, 2023 in Italy ⋅ 🌙 5 °C

Pa smo dočakali spet malo potovanja. Tokrat, ker so nam prestavili zimske počitnice, je izbrana destinacija večno mesto, Rim. Bolno.

      The oldest church in Rome

      September 19, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

We started the day with breakfast at the hotel, catching up with Peter and Grace, and Paul and Janine. Janine had nearly lost her phone to a beggar thief the night before but Paul had chased the beggar and recovered her phone, and tow additional phones of others at the restaurant. He was the hero of the hour.
We then caught a bus to the Basilica of St John in Lateran, a church established first in 324ad just 12 years after Constantine had legalised Christianity in the Roman Empire. It is a huge church, alongside a palace occupied by the pope for hundreds of years until the Middle Ages. And outside the church is a huge obelisk taken from the temple of Karnak in Egypt where it had been placed in 1400BC. The first place it occupied in Rome was at the centre of the circus maximus, until it was relocated to this significant church.
The twin obelisk from the Temple of Karnak was placed by Constantine in the hippodrome in Istanbul where it can still be seen today.
The interior of the church was very impressive and it is one of the four major basilicas in Rome.
We stopped for coffee and refreshments at a small cafe across the road from the church before catching a bus back to the hotel.
We then explored the church across the road from our hotel which is also one of the four significant basilicas in Rome - the Basilica of Saint Mary Maggiore. This church was founded in about 450AD on the Esquiline Hill in Rome, not far from the Termini Railway station today, it is an impressive church and the hotel we are staying in was built 600 years ago as a palace to house the cardinals who were candidates in the election for Pope.
Lots of amazing history. Then we went to the Mercato adjacent to the station for lunch. It is a high quality food market. The pizzas are some of the best in Rome.

      San Giovanni Laterno

      May 27, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Doug was wanting to get to this major basilica which was 'washed out' on our last trip.

Although being rebuilt a few times due to earthquakes and fires, this is the oldest church in Europe. Founded during the fourth century in honour of St. John the Baptist and John the Evangelist, St John Lateran (Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano) is the Cathedral of Rome, in other words, the 'home' cathedral of the Pope, and therefore the most important of the four 'papal' basilicas. It is known as an Archbasilica, as is it considered the mother church of the Roman Catholic faithful. It is huge, and in fact was the largest church in Rome until St. Peter's. The interior is magnificent with colossal statues, built into the impressive columns. The mosaic in the apse was partly destroyed in a fire, but reconstructed to the original appearance.Read more

We arrived safely in Rome, and checked into our BnB. After a recommendation from our host we had our first true Italian dinner at Spaccio.

It was loaded with everything you'd want: focaccia, Parma Ham, Bufala mozzarella, and a seafood medley al dente pasta dish.Read more

      Scala Santa

      May 11, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

This morning we were able do something unexpected. The Scale Santa are the steps that Jesus walked up when he was persecuted by Pontius Pilate.

We had heard that they were closed because the marble steps had become too worn. Apparently they covered the steps with wood and are open again.

The building is filled with beautiful frescos (see second picture) on the walls and ceiling.

Lastly, while there we are told the stairs were originally in Jerusalem, but were relocated to Rome by Emperor Constantine's mother. Fun fact.
