Day trip to Capri and Anacapri

      17 april, Italië ⋅ ☀️ 61 °F

There was a lot of surf so we were unable to take the boat from Positano to Capri. So we went over to Sorrento by bus and got the car ferry from there. We had many such strokes of good luck. The G7 meetings closed many streets but we did some sneaky workarounds and saw lots in Capri.

The highlight for me was the home of Axel Muenthe, the Swedish doctor who updated a villa that used to belong to Tiberius, on the edge of the cliff. He had an unerring sense of style and the design, plants, and sculptures were amazing.

      Positano/ Sorrento (2 Days)

      7 april, Italië ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

Off to Positano, but along the way came across the Ceramiche Casola ( recommended by Morris's cousin Davina). They do the most beautiful handpainted tables, chairs, dishes, etc. So, of course, we ended up getting a custom 20" Lazy Susan (w/lemons, of course) for an outdoor table. Can't wait to see the artist's design.

Town of Positano is carved even closer into the hillside with cute lanes and steep steps everywhere. The road is one way through town so don't miss your destination 😉 Enjoyed an afternoon in the town overlooking the views and beaches.

Later that afternoon, we arrived in Sorrento, a larger town on the west side of the Almafi Coast, to our lovely Hotel Eden. In the courtyard of lemon trees, we were greeted by "Michael" the GM of the hotel . When we asked where we could dine and listen to music at night, he graciously offered his home for a homemade dinner and to meet his family. We joined another couple from Ireland and had an amazing evening as Michael showed us his underground winemaking, olives, and garden. His wife prepared a delicious meal of sphagetti w vegetables and sauce made from their garden. The bread was from a home bakery down the street. We ended up spending over 4 hours there as the time flew. Simply wonderful evening!!

In the morning, we took a ferry to the Island of Capri, then Boat Tour around the island to see the Light House, white grotto, green grotto, blue grotto. Quaint island that gets a lot of tourists. Enjoyed the town and local beach, a little too cold for a dip. After a full day there, it was back to Sorrento.

      Florence to Sorrento

      8 april, Italië ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

Today, we had to be on the coach at 8. For once, Pearse and I were responsible and almost gave ourselves enough time to get there lol. Our roommate got back from the bars at 6 am and thought we were getting on the bus at 830. We woke this poor guy up multiple times, I bet that was a fun bus ride for him. We stopped a couple of times for food and to stretch our legs. We've been pretty drained and still sick, so I think we both got a little bit of sleep on the bus. When I woke up, I looked out the window and saw we were on a narrow mountain road right in the edge of a cliff. Again, these tiny roads are two-way. They definitely shouldn't be. For the first time, I heard Paulo, the driver, raise his voice in frustration. Still though absolute ice in his veins. The views were unreal. It's going to take a lot to beat the views from this mountain road in Sorrento. It just happened to be 5 minutes from the hostel as well. After a 10 hour day, we finally made it to the hostel. The first thing I did was claim the double bed lol. Pearse and I made a deal he gets bottom bunk at the next two places because he was stuck on a single bed. I hopped in the shower, and when I came out, Pearse was already passed out on the bed for a quick power nap. I just went downstairs and relaxed in the sun and spoke to my parents for a bit. We had about 2 hours to chill before the bus dropped us off in town to explore and have dinner. I just lounged in the beautiful weather for that time. Sorrento is known for their lemons, lemon trees everywhere, limoncello, and lemon clothing stores. Anything lemon is there. On the shop streets, they pull you in and give you some free limoncello to get you to buy some. I felt bad going into all the stores pretending I've never had any and getting different tasters, I also didn't buy anything from them lol. After wondering for a while, we got some dinner with some people in our crew. I finally got some gnocchi. It was delicious. The portions here are so much smaller than at home, but after every meal, I feel full. It's pretty deceiving. After dinner, we got back on the coach to go to the hostel. Everyone was so tired from traveling all day, so it was a pretty early night. We are really hoping a good nights rest will cure the Contiki Cough up.Meer informatie

After the absolute dive we stayed in during our TripADeal Rome stay (…yes! Neil…letting it go!). It seemed necessary to create a simple post for tonight’s TripADeal accommodation! All praise the Moon Valley Hotel 🏨🙏

There could be no better textbook,👃example of ‘chalk and cheese’ as this, and the last place!

Everyone bonded around the pool, and we even found some fun fellow travellers from the TripADeal textbook of life, and went out for dinner with them! This makes it all worthwhile…fingers crossed 🤞 it continues…

Finally, we know we are on the Amalfi coast! 🇮🇹☀️🍹💚🤍❤️🍋🍋🍋🍋🇮🇹

      Positano and Beyond

      4 mei 2022, Italië ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

We began the day by driving down the Amalfi coast. I had no idea of the spectacular scenery we would find. Towering mountains fall right down into the sea. The coastal road hugs a tiny ledge that often rises 2000 feet above the water of the Mediterranean Sea. Massive cliffs rise vertically out of the ocean to a crest another thousand feet above us. The coastline here is even more magnificent than the California road traveling from Carmel down to Big Sur. We stopped in Positano at a wonderful family restaurant called Constantino’s. Our five course meal started with a Caprese salad, continued with a pizza course. This was followed by a pasta course consisting of cannoli, tagliatelle, manicotti and a wonderful cheese filled crêpe. The meal ended with lemoncello cake followed by a small shot of the beverage itself.

The scenery became even more magnificent as we swung back-and-forth on switchbacks. We went into higher mountains with terraces for growing white grapes, lemons, olives, and a host of other agricultural products. The terrain looked as though a giant accordion has been thrown down the mountainside. Each new turn revealed another mountain with hundreds of terraces going up the side. Each terrace was supported by a thick retaining wall made of huge stone blocks. Each of these blocks had to be hauled up the mountain side, usually by donkeys. It must have taken an unbelievable amount of work over centuries to haul all of the stone necessary to build those retaining walls. The terrain is so steep that even today stonemasons in brickmasons use donkeys to carry their loads to the worksite. We took time to visit a resort that our travel agents wanted to investigate. It is the opulent San Pietro resort near Positano. Rates here start at €3000 per night. We also saw the lovely town of Ravolo that hosts a classical music festival every June.

At the far point of our trek we were delighted with the sites from the Villa Rufolo, an estate begun as a castle in the 13th century, modified by the Saracens around 1500, and completely renovated in the 19th century. The estate belonged to a cousin of the pope, a nobleman who essentially ruled the Amalfi coast. This building originally reflected an unusual balance between Norman, medieval, and Saracen styles. However, the major renovation in the 19th century incorporated some romantic fantasies which upset that balance. Nevertheless, the house and watchtower are interesting, and the gardens are stunningly beautiful in their springtime colors.

We returned to our hotel after a long day, said good-night to a bejeweled Vesuvius and dropped into bed.

      Positano
