      Mount Fuji

      Nach einer Nacht mit wenig Schlaf (die Sonne geht in Japan schon gegen 5 Uhr morgens auf und dann erhitzt sich das Hotelzimmer in Rekordschnelle), haben wir heute Tokyo verlassen und sind mit Bus und Bahn Richtung Mount Fuji gefahren. Schnellzug fahren ist sehr komfortabel, Bus fahren hingegen in unserem Fall sehr anstrengend. Unser Bus vom Lokalen Bahnhof war vollgestopft mit Menschen und wir waren mit unseren Koffern irgendwie immer im Weg. Aber auch das haben wir geschafft und jetzt können wir uns in unserem kunterbunten Hostel super ausruhen. Wir sind hier direkt an einem der Fuji-Seen und weil wir hier um einiges höher liegen als in Tokyo blühen auch die Kirchschbäume noch mehr als in der Hauptstadt. Mal sehen was der morgige Tag am Fuji so bringt. Wir hoffen die Sicht wird noch etwas klarer. In China hat ein Sandsturm getobt und der bringt gerade kleine Sandpartikel und somit eine trübe Sicht nach Japan.Les mer

      Fuji-san in den Wolken

      Den Tag auf verbracht mit der Suche nach Fuji-san, leider erfolglos aber dafür die Region rund um Tokyo ein wenig erkundet. 🏔🚍🍡

      Die Bezeichnung Fuji-yama ist ein Irrtum aus der Zeit der frühesten Kontakte des Westens mit Japan nach dessen Öffnung 1854. Das Schriftzeichen san (山) wird ebenfalls yama gelesen, doch in Zusammensetzung mit dem Bergnamen liest man es san.

      Dort haben wir die beste alte japanische Dame getroffen und 1h lang mit ihr geredet!

      Tokyo to Mount Fuji

      Another fitful night of sleep and winding if I'll ever shake off this jet lag.

      The weather this morning when we woke was wet and very windy... Very similar to what we might have expected at home. The promise though was off better weather in the afternoon.

      Given the weather we decided to have a chilled morning and a slightly later check out before walking from the hotel to Shinjuku station to catch a train to our destination for the next couple of days, Mount Fuji.

      Fortunately, by the time we started walking the rain had stopped, although it was still windy. At the station we bought some tickets for later in the trip and then headed up the platform to catch the train.

      The service was not a bullet train (that will wait for another day) but it was still absolutely on time and spotlessly clean.
      The journey to our first change was just under an hour and at Otuski we changed trains to get a local train to Mount Fuji. Fortunately the weather was better and by the time we arrived.

      We got off the train at an amusement park, complete with roller coasters although we declined to take part! We walked the short distance to our hotel and checked in.. The hotel is clean and tidy but very different to our previous one.

      We walked from the hotel to a viewing point (on top of a shopping centre) of mount Fuji. Next week walked to an area that was highlighted as having bars and restaurants. It would be in understanding to try that it was deserted... It felt very much like an out of season British seaside - nothing was open. So, we decided to walk back to the hotel for a beer before having dinner at the hotel.

      The hotel restaurant is a BBQ affair and we both managed to make a decent effort at cooking.

      Decided to have an early night tonight in the hope that sleep comes easily before a fun packed day in the Mount Fuji area!      Les mer

      Mt Fuji to Takayama

      Woke up to the most breathtaking views of Mt Fuji. We slept rough but it was worth it. Our rooms had traditional Japanese dressing gowns which they encouraged us to wear to breakfast. Um nah.

      Today is a drive to Matsumoto Castle, also known as ‘Crow Castle’ due to its dramatic black exterior. It proved to be more of a physical challenge than expected. You must remove your shoes and carry them in a plastic bag at the same time as climbing 8 flights of wooden stairs. The steps were very steep so you hang on to the bamboo rails and off you go. The 5th story was worth it for the vistas of the surrounding town. The donjon (keep) is Japan’s oldest remaining wooden keep, completed around 1593 – is listed as a National Treasure.

      The pictures show the surreal snow capped mountains. Truly Japan at its best.

      The next few hours caught us by surprise. We drove straight up and over the alps. The snow from winter is still plentiful so we just sat back and had a most beautiful drive. In a few weeks it will all have melted away.

      Our Takayama hotel is in a city that
      still retains a traditional feel, especially in its beautifully preserved old town (Sanmachi Suji).

      We visited the Takayama Jin’ya, the former government headquarters under the Tokugawa Shogunate from 1692-1871. Shoes off again.

      Loving the old latticed wooden buildings and Sannomachi Street, with pretty homes, restaurants and sake breweries.

      Mount Fuji schockverliebt

      Heute ging es eine gefühlte Ewigkeit weiter mit den Zügen nach Kawagouchiko. Also einmal fast bis nach Tokio und dann wieder den Schlenker zurück zum Mount Fuji. Nach gefühlten Ewigkeiten wurde ich dann bei dem letzten Streckenabschnitt belohnt mit einer wunderschönen Sicht auf den Mount Fuji. Ich weiß nicht was es ist oder wieso es so ist, aber ich war sofort begeistert. Also hab ich meine Sachen nur schnell im Hostel in mein Bett geschmissen und bin losgezogen immer weiter Richtung Berg. Was soll ich sagen, der Ausblick ist einfach wunderschön, die Luft ist zwar frisch aber sehr angenehm und hier blühen grade die Tulpen, Narzissen und Kirschen. Also wieder ein wunderschöner Stopp auf meiner Reise. Ich habe am Bahnhof sogar eine Fahrrad Mietstation gesehen, vielleicht radel ich mal ein wenig umher ☺️
      Nach dem Kotlett zum Abendessen aus einem sehr urigen Restaurant bin ich super müde und werde mich nach der Dusche ins Bett kuscheln.

      Im Shinkansen habe ich heute einer Chinesin Mut für ihr Vorstellungsgespräch zugesprochen und sie etwas mit meinen Erzählungen von der Reise von ihrer Nervosität abgelenkt. Schön immer wieder neue nette Menschen zu treffen.      Les mer

      Mount Fuji

      Wie viele Bilder kann man von einem Berg machen? Jedesmal ein bisschen anders und von verschiedenen Standorten.
      Hoch motiviert bin ich heute Richtung Seilbahn gestartet, als ich dann noch einen kleinen Abstecher zum See machen wollte gab's da Bootstouren. Als ich dann gesehen habe, dass das Boot in 5 Minuten ablegt habe ich mich unentschlossen und habe den Tag mit einer Bootstour begonnen. Ganz schön frisch war es, aber auch wunderschön. Hier hat sich ganz klammheimlich schon die erste Wolke Richtung Gipfel geschlichen. Ordentlich durchgepustet und überglücklich ging es wieder an Land. Zum Glück habe ich die Chance ergriffen, denn die nächste Fahrt war propen voll da wäre ich nicht gerne mitgefahren.
      Nach einer Frühstückspause am Wasser ging es dann weiter zur Seilbahn. Hier war es nun ordentlich voll und ich musste über eine Stunde anstehen, aber dank dem Kindel ging die Zeit mit lesen schnell vorbei.
      Oben angekommen schien die Sonne und die Sicht war wunderschön. Auch hier kamen nach und nach immer mehr Wolken und haben den Gipfel bedeckt.
      Wieder unten angekommen wurde ich vom Duft der Käsekuchen angelockt und habe mir ein Ministück ausgesucht, so eine Größe hätte ich auch gern in Deutschland.
      Gestärkt ging es dann Richtung Brücke und Yagizaki Park. Hier blühen die Kirschen noch.
      Aber mich hat der Park nicht lange reizen können und somit habe ich den Hummeln im Po nachgegeben und bin nochmal auf die andere Seeseite und hab die Brücke überquert. Hier war das ganze Ufer voller Kirschblüten- wunderschön!
      Zurück habe ich dann doch ein bisschen abgekürzt und habe mich in den übervollen Bus gequetscht. Immerhin 10 Minuten Fußweg gespart und somit sind es dann heute auch nur 22500 Schritte geworden.
      Nach einem frühen Abendessen werde ich nun nur noch duschen und mich dann ins Bett kuscheln. Die frische Bergluft macht ganz schön müde 🥱
      Morgen geht's auch schon wieder weiter und zurück ins Großstadtgetümmel. Dann heißt es Hallo Tokio und somit auch meine Endstation in Japan.      Les mer

      Mt fuji, shuzenji onsen and bullet train

      I think I mightve accidentally picked one of the best days of the entire year to see Mount Fuji, it was the first clear blue sky in almost 2 weeks and the cherry blossoms were still in full flower! The scene was picture perfect the only problem was that every other person in Japan decided to come to Mt Fuji with me which meant the buses in the Mt Fuji town were so full and delayed they were essentially useless, the queue to get a photo at the iconic Pagoda spot went for miles and the train from Tokyo was so full I had to sit on the floor again like in Germany. I did my best to capture the perfect Mt Fuji day but a sad reality of travelling in this post spencer world is that all my pictures suck and apparently no one understands how angles work (I was supposed to be taking a bite out of a Fuji apple smh). I went to a Shrine near Mt Fuji that was very quiet and had lots of lovely tall trees like that part of caves road near Red gate. I think it mightve been the highlight of the day :).  I stayed in a capsule hotel for one night at which was actually sensational, so much more comfortable than the hostels I've been in, I strongly recommend!

      The following day I went to shuzenji onsen, which is a small village known for inventing wasabi and having a bunch of natural warm springs (onsen). The village had a very calming quality to it, it was surrounded by hilly forests and had a beautiful stream running down the middle which made light water noises that you can hear everywhere you go. For lunch I went to a restaurant that served wasabi soda! Wasabi soda is literally just soda water with a clump of wasabi floating in the middle that you stir through, it tasted pretty bad but there was something to it which was a bit morish. After lunch I went to an onsen and sat naked in a warm bath with a bunch of other dudes which was actually way more chill than I expected, but I stayed in too long trying to get my moneys worth and now i feel like I'm sunburnt but I haven't been in the sun. In the afternoon I started to go on a nature walk but almost stepped on a snake so I went back and just read at a spot overlooking the village instead (which is what I wanted to do anyway I just felt obligated to do the walk because it was there ahaha).

      Today I caught a bullet train to Kyoto! It was very cool, especially when we passed another bullet train going the other way because it would push us to the side a bit and tilt the train. I spent most of the ride wondering what would happen if a person jumped and then two bullet trains passed at exactly the same time on either side, I reckon they'd spin so hard they'd turn into a long thin tube ahaha.       Mt. Fuji: 4 Touri Hotspots, 1 Vulkan

      Was natürlech nid darf fähle, weme in Japan isch: e Usflug zum berüehmte Vulkan Fuji. Wüume mitem ÖV mega oft muess umstige und schlussendlech über 3h het (wimer im Nachhinein erfahre hei gits da no besseri Verbindige, die het üs aber Google Maps leider nid azeigt) heimer üs entschiede, e gfüerti Tour miteme Bus z’mache. Gstartet het das ganze am 8:30 vor Shinjuku Station us. Mir hei extrem Glück gha mit de Wetterbedingige, u drum hei mir de Fuji scho während de härefahrt ab und zue chönne erspähe. Nach guet 1.5h heimer de üse erst Spot erreicht gha: Chureito Pagoda in Fujoyoshida. D’Ussicht muesme sich aber zersch verdiene, sie steit nämlech ufeme Hügu. Nach ca. 300 Stägetritte heimers de aber gschafft und hei die sehr schöni Ussicht chönne gniesse.
      Wieder unde acho, simer z’Fuess 10 Minute zum nächste Spot gloffe: Die berüehmti Honcho Street. Vo dert hettme dür die Strass düre e wunderschöne Blick ufe Fuji. Es müesse aber 2 Poliziste de ganz Tag dert bir Chrüzig stah und d’Touris devo abhlate, eifach uf d’Strass z’loufe für Fotos 😂 Vor Honcho Street us simer witer zumene Ort mit 5 Teiche gfahre. Es het recht viel Lüt gha und trotz de Ussicht ufe Fuji het üs dä Ort vo aune am wenigste umghoue. Vo dert us simer nachere Stund Ufenthalt zum Kawaguchi See gfahre. O dert hets gnue Lüt gha, aber dank em grosse Park heisech d’lüt recht guet verteilt. Es het sehr viel schöni, farbigi Pflanze und Böim gha und isch definitiv es Highlight gsi vo dem Tag. O dert heimer e Stund verbracht und gnue Zit gha, de ganz Park und z’schöne Ufer, natürlech mit super Blick ufe Fuji, z’bestuune. Churz nach de haubi 4i heimer üs när vo dert us mitem Reisebüsli ufe Heiweg gmacht. Mit chli Stou simer när chli nach de 6i zrugg in Shinjuku gsi.       Mt Fuji

      I tried to book a train to Fuji as my phone said it could get the whole way there but it would only allow me to book up to Otsuki even though the train continues on. Turns out the part where it continues is owned by another company and is chargeable, I was able to stay on the train but needed to pay the conductor to continue on though I lost my seat and sat on the ground for the second half. It only cost an extra $10 to do that last section.
      I got off and walked up to the pergola first as that was one of the major tourist spots. There were a fair number of stairs, my video was only half of them and apparently you can continue much further up the mountain if you wished but I didn't feel up for that. Up the top was quite busy with multiple lines for photo spots. It was a nice beautiful day and view but with all the people around it was not a very calm place.
      I got back down and found a food cart which I grabbed a rainbow 🌈 cheese dog from. It was basically just mozzarella with food colouring but I had seen other people order them and felt I should give it a go.
      I started walking from there towards Fuji and to see where it would take me. There were lots of Yakitori places and signs in english saying to be careful taking photos from the middle of the road so I assume this was a popular spot as the road aligned with Fuji.
      It must have snowed recently as there were signs of it and frost out of the sun.
      I grabbed myself a curry lunch which was decent enough and then headed to a local onsen for a look.
      The onsen is called Sensui and has a few baths/sauna/cold pools. There was a list of all the minerals which the baths contained but was in kanji and I didn't have my phone to allow me to translate. The outside baths were volcanic rock and a view of Fuji which was nice. I did a few laps and then used my little towel to also dry myself. I have noticed at onsens you don't properly dry yourself, instead just a ringed out wash cloth to remove the majority. It's not actually that bad and have gotten better with this style.
      I then bussed back to the train and just jumped on but for some reason it cost $17 this time. I again didn't have a seat but sat with a guy in the hallway until we got to the jrsection. At that point the 3 car carriage joined a 7 car carriage to continue onto Tokyo and there were plenty of seats.
      It was interesting to see how the two trains joined and then a passageway opened up between what was originally the front/back of each of the trains.
      When I got back to Shibuya I found them working on the yamanote line which is the main circle line in Tokyo. They had to replace the tracks which was done in 2 days using a lot of man power. The shot I took was just one section but there were multiple which had this many workers all working on top of each other.      Les mer
