      Gozo - (Last Day)

      After a leisurely breakfast (in) we decided to brave the ferry to Gozo. Thankfully the wind was a non-event.

      Gozo is a small island of ~25,000 people and known as Malta's tranquil counterpart.

      Our first stop was Victoria, the capital city of Gozo. Victoria is set inland and boasts narrow winding streets, and traditional houses with Mediterranean balconies and other unique architectural styles. You could see that many would have been remarkable in their day (sadly, fifty percent have not been maintained).

      The town's heart, and main tourist draw is the the Citadel, which stands like a fortified city atop the hill offering panoramic views.

      In our experience, European travel ‘Stiles-fashion’ consists of layers: history then food—we did not go far off plan today! In perfect Stiles fashion, we had dessert first (chai lattes and a chocolate macaron!)
      After working up an appetite stomping around the grounds of the Citadel, we wandered back to the same plaza for lunch at the excellent Roza (the mashed potatoes that came with Paul’s rabbit stew were so good he asked for the recipe. Of course the answer was “lots of butter”. I think there was also rosemary, parsley and a little sweet mustard in the mix.)

      So food-history-food (see the pattern?)

      Gozo is known for its dramatic coastline and we put Alex in charge of selecting the best place to view the cliffs. See the Senap Cliffs pics and video.

      Once again we put Alex in charge of a late (light) dinner and he produced two absolutely delicious pizzas (from a nearby Italian restaurant). We have all the same ingredients here in Spain. Why can’t we find pizza this amazing at home?

      Oh well, this is all part of travel!

      Ausflug nach Gozo und Comino

      Per Bus fahren wir als Gruppe zum Anlegeplatz der Fähre nach Goza.
      Mir wirds Kotzübel schlecht.

      Ich lerne einige Leute aus der Gruppe kennen:aus Japan, Italien , Deutschland und Colombien.
      Die Citadelle Anlage ist imposant . Es hat allles und einen wunderbaren Rundblick mit unglaublicher Aussicht.
      Ich besichtige speziell das Prison- den Gefangenen wurde erstaunlich gut geschaut.      Läs mer

      Victoria streets

      Time for a bit of island hopping. Due to rough weather, the fast ferry from Malta to the smaller island of Gozo isn't running so I take a slow bus to the north-west of Malta, then the large but slower ferry to Mgarr on Gozo and finally a local bus to the island's capital, Victoria. The sounds of Christmas are in full swing; hearing "All I want for Christmas is you" is a guilty pleasure, as is "2,000 Miles" with Chrissie Hynde's lovely voice, and there's even a choral version of "Holy Night". Malta is actually associated with St. George and his slaying of the dragon, as is St. Paul, who was shipwrecked around 60 A.D. And there's also the Immaculate Conception (image 3), due to take place on the 8th December.

      The blue door in image 4 is the entrance to my accommodation, where the owner gives me a detailed description of excursions around Gozo and how to reach them, but she then has to leave for a domestic issue. For the next three days I have the surreal experience of the building to myself. Once I have mastered the controls I can watch World Cup undisturbed on the TV. On the Sunday, England beat Senegal 3-0 but the "England expects" mantra is to fall silent when a few days later, France knock us out in the quarter-finals.

      As all over Gozo and Malta as a whole, Victoria boasts some inspiring baroque architecture. The Cathedral, which has just hosted a wedding when I get there, dates from around 1700 and is housed in the Citadella, which is about to become a UNESCO World Heritage site. Golden Hour, or maybe Silver Hour as the moon is rising, brings out its best. The streets of Victoria are noticeably different from those of Valletta, following a more ancient, Middle-Eastern pattern of hidden alleyways than that of its big sister. And Victoria isn't shy to promote its local products.      Läs mer

      Gozo

      Notre voyage va commencer à virer en une perpétuelle recherche d'une île plus petite que la précédente, mais nous voici à Gozo, la petite sœur de Malte 😁.
      Sortis du bateau et après une heure et demie de marche, on arrive déjà à la capitale Victoria, pile au centre de l'île. On pourrait croire que le tour du propriétaire serait plié en 2 jours mais que nenni ! Plusieurs belles et longues balades sont dispos, des temples néolithiques, un peu d'urbex, un peu de plongée (merci aux parents pour le cadeau de Noël 😃) et voilà déjà une semaine de passée.Läs mer

      Non stop whistle stop tour

      Of Gozo, Comino Island and Blue Lagoon.
      40min bus ride to Valletta. 20min ferry to Sliema. 90min Cruise to Gozo. 30min bus tour round Gozo, with 90mins to sightsee and shop. 30min cruise to Comino island. 75min to walk and swim round Blue lagoon, before the 3hr return journey - Not the most relaxing of days!
      Note to self- check out the 'cruise' ship prior to buying a ticket. We were with Supreme cruises - there was nothing supreme about it!!
      Gozo is pretty in places but I had a dodgy pattizzi which isn't pleasant when you are on a boat. The blue lagoon is definitely blue and very clear but the beach area is smaller then my lounge and full of people and catering vans selling over inflated cocktails and thin burgers.
      We swam in the sea - yes Grace too - as at least you could get away from the crowds!      Läs mer

      Gozo 2000

      Gozo, eine von drei Hauptinseln die zum kleinen Archipel von Malta gehört, liegt nur rund zwei Flugstunden von Deutschland entfernt.

      Zwischen Sizilien und Tunesien gelegen, ist es eines der besten Tauchgebiete im Mittelmeer - und genau das, war der ausschlaggebende Punkt für meine 10tägige Reise im Juli 2000.

      Was im Laufe der letzten Jahre ganz normal für mich wurde, war damals völlig neu und ungewohnt - ich war alleine on Tour..... das erste Mal!

      Gut, beim Tauchen findet sich immer schnell Kontakt dennoch, alleine Verreisen mußte ich erst einmal lernen - mit Erfolg, wie sich 21 Jahre später zeigt.

      Gleich nach der Landung auf Malta, wurde es spannend.

      Der Transfer auf die Nachbarinsel, erfolgte mit einem russischen Großraum Helicopter - ein tolles Erlebnis!

      Meine Unterkunft im damals sehr beschaulichen Küsten Örtchen Xlendi, könnte maximal als durchschnittlich bezeichnet werden, das Tauchen auf Gozo jedoch war prima.

      Nicht unbedingt wegen einer besonders artenreichen Fauna, es sind die atemberaubenden UW Landschaften und erstklassige Sichtweiten, welche die Tauchgänge dort so einmalig machen!

      Gozo ist klein und die verschiedenen Dive Spots, werden überwiegend mit einem Geländewagen angefahren.

      Auf diese Weise, klappert man so nebenbei automatisch die meisten Sehenswürdigkeiten auf der Insel ab.

      Das Blue Hole, den Inlandsee und allem voran, den aus zahlreichen Filmproduktionen bekannten Felsenbogen "Azure Window".

      Leider ist dieses Naturwunder nicht mehr zu bestaunen - Sturm, extreme Wellen, oder einfach die Jahrtausende, hatten das bekannteste Wahrzeichen Gozo's am 08. März 2017 zum Einsturz gebracht!

      Da ausreichend Zeit vorhanden war, nutze ich damals auch die spottbilligen, öffentlichen Busse.

      Alleine schon in einem der zahlreichen Oldtimer mitzufahren, machte richtig Spaß - in meinem Fall nach Victoria, der hübschen Inselhauptstadt.

      Tauchen auf Gozo hatte mir sehr gut gefallen, deshalb war ich in kurzen Abständen zwei weitere Male dort zu Gast, einmal auch in Verbindung mit Malta - es ist wirklich an der Zeit, dort wieder einmal einige Tage zu verbringen.

      Mein zweites Reise Jahrzehnt ist damit abgeschlossen.

      Fernziele wurden 1992 für mich ganz normal und ab 1998, spielten Tauchdestinationen eine wesentliche Rolle bei der Urlaubsplanung.

      Besøget på øen Ghawdex

      Efter vores tur ind i De Blå Grotter, sejlede vi til øen Ghawdex som er en dejlig og yderst hyggelig ø. Her så vi, på egen hånd, nogle af de smukke seværdigheder, blandt andet det smukke Folklore Museum. Samme sted findes øens gamle fængsel, hvor vi dog ikke gik ind. Vi fik tid til en lille frokost på byens torv og i det hele taget nød vi bare opholdet på øen. Jeg mener vi havde ca. halvanden time på øen, inden bussen fragtede os tilbage til "vores" båd.Läs mer

      Den Blå Lagune

      Nu var turen kommet til besøg i Den Blå Lagune hvor vi fik et par timer på egen hånd. Nogle valgte at bade i det helt fantastisk smukke lyseblå vand, mens andre gik rundt på må og få og f.eks. "besteg" det forholdsvis høje "bjerg". Vi forsøgte også, men jeg måtte ca. halvvejs oppe, melde pas, (jeg har jo en dårlig fod, og dermed en god undskyldning ;-)

      Men hold da op hvor er det vand smukt. Det er en oplevelse som jeg vil anbefale enhver som er på ferie på Malta at besøge.

      Vi var også forbi øen Gozo hvor den tidligere så kendte klippe 'Det Blå Vindue' fandtes. Desværre styrtede klippen som bekendt sammen, tilbage i Marts 2017.      Läs mer
