    BER Airport Berlin-Brandenburg ✈️

    August 18, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Every trip begins with a first step. My first stepping stone is the BER Berlin Airport, my most favorite airport so far. 🫶✈️ 😎

I recommend taking a delicious oatmeal and a coffee from Haferkater, before moving on to your gate. My personal favorite is the Apfelkater with an Americano! 🍎☕️🤤

I always love the atmosphere at airports, just as much as I like flying. Airports are places where people from all over the world come together for a brief moment of time, before continuing on their journeys. 🚀🧜‍♀️🧚‍♀️🧞‍♂️

Just looking at the the gate displays or billboards, or seeing planes leaving to far away places, inspires me to travel further and explore countries I didn't know before. 🌏️🗺️🤠

Continuing onwards on my journey I will travel to Chania in Crete, from where I will push farther south. Sit back, enjoy, and take a ride with me. 🇬🇷⛱️🌊😎

    Chania, Crete - Airport ✈️

    August 18, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Landing in Chania, Crete feels like coming back home, since I have been here so many times. Finally in Greece again! 🇬🇷🫶

The unique climate always hits you, stepping out of the plane: the Greek sun in a spotless blue sky, slowly settling and illuminating everything in a soft red, the humid salty air from the sea. ⛱️☀️🌊😎

At the airport I get picked up by Alexis, my favorite Cretan taxi driver. Alexis is a great source for everything going on in Chania. We philosophize about destiny, how much saying you have in it, family - he is expecting a daughter - and women, who can become your destiny. Takeaway of the day: women want bad boys, but they want bad boys to treat them like gentlemen. 😉

With some seriously good life advices from Alexis, we arrive in Hora Sfakia, from where I will take the ferry to Gavdos the following day. ⛴️

    Hora Sfakia

    August 18, 2023 in Greece ⋅ 🌙 28 °C

Finally arriving in at the day's final destination, first thing I do is unpack my trunks and take a swim in the sea. It is always unreal, feeling the sand under your feet, and breathing in the salty air, after a whole day's journey. ☀️🌊⛱️🥰

After taking in the evening's last light, I look forward to eating something. I decide on Zoe's organic restaurant and go for a traditional Cretan dish: as an appetizer I have salad with marinated fish, and as main dish Tsigariasto, slowly cooked lamb chops with french fries. Together with a fruit salad it is the perfect round off for long day. 🍖🍟🍉😚

Tomorrow I'll head off with the ferry to Gavdos! 😄⛴️

    Into the Sea 🌊☀️

    August 19, 2023, Eastern Mediterranean ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

After a morning swim in the sea and a hearty breakfast at the local bakery, I am ready to embark on the ferry and sail to Gavdos. ☕️🥐😎

On board there's a real backpacking vibe, with lots of people carrying their equiment for camping on the beach. A nice mixture of young and old, you can identify who is going to the island for the first time, and who is has been coming for several years and now bringing their family along. ⛴️ 🏝️

We are setting sail for the open sea and approaching Gavdos, the southernmost island of Europe. 🌊🌊🌊🧜‍♂️

    Arriving on the Island 🏝️

    August 19, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Arriving at the small port of Gavdos there is a huge bustle with unloading cars, supplies and travellers, while other travellers already wait to get on the boat. The ferry also serves to supply the island, so a lot of goods are being moved back and forth. Everyone scrambles to the buses which take a short drive to the beaches. 🌊⛴️

I opt for Sarakiniko, my first stop on the island, where I am going to pitch my tent for the night. My first base is a small mini market, where I pick up important supplies like water, and also grab something to eat and a coffee. The place already is lively with long- and shortterm islanders, and I can't wait to explore the beach. 🏝️🌊☀️☕️

    Exploring Sarakiniko Beach 🏝️

    August 19, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Sarakiniko beach basically is a large bay with a huge sandy beach that flows into the dunes up the hill. There are only some small tavernas and mini markets that give the entire little beachtown an improvised shantytown flair. The infrastructure is basic, but offers anything you would need like showers and toilets. ⛱️☀️

You feel as being in paradise where Greek gods and goddesses come alive, because you find some of the most beautiful people you can imagine lounging under the trees, listening to Reggea and traditional Greek music. 🌴🌊⛱️😍

The entire scene feels more like the Caribbean, but with a specific Greek laissez-faire. I use the midday heat to hide in the shadow and have lunch, while preparing to pitch my tent. 🥗🍉🍇😋

Good news, tomorrow night there is going to be a Techno party at the beach! 🤩🎛️🎶

    Finding a Home ⛺️

    August 19, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

For pitching my tent I walk up the dunes to the sandy hills and find a nice spot under a tree. Not the most shade, but all the prime spots are already taken. You can find improvised habitats all around. There are a few stone built huts with appartments to rent. But most just put their tents freely. At least mine offers some shade in the evening, and I plan to rise early and spent the day elsewhere anyways. ⛺️😍

Luckily there is a great cafe nearby close to the beach, so I plan to have a coffee to reward myself for the hard work. ☕️😋

    A quiet night & a lazy day

    August 19, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

The night was very quiet and the weather excellent, so there wasn't even a need for a tent, and I could sleep right outside in my sleeping bag. There are no mosquitos in the dunes, or any other insects except the occasional small scorpion, and the only animals were two large black bunnies playing in the sand. 🌠⭐️🌙😴

I got up early to take a swim in the sea and planned for a lazy day. To escape the scorching midday sun, I chilled in a hammock under a series of old large conifer trees, where everyone gathers to go about their lives. My now favorite tavern Nychterida which is run by Marika, originally from Austria, but now living with her family on Gavdos, serves a variety of drinks and food. 🥗🍉🍇😋

A Djane from Berlin has arrived and there is going to be a Techno party at the beach. Looking forward to it! 🏝️🫶

    Gavdos DJ 🎧️🎶

    August 20, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Turns out, the party was a full blast. Not only did I get to know a group of wonderful people, I also made my premiere as a DJ on Gavdos. Yes, you heard that right, I worked as a DJ in the Αιώρα (Aora) beach bar at Sarakiniko! 🪄🪁🎧️🎶

The Aora bar is a lovely little place, where people can relax or sleep in hammocks under the trees in the shade, while being served drinks or dishes by the wonderful Maryka and Tomas, who are exceptionally welcoming hosts. 🏝️🥗

With all the people I met, we became a group of around 8-9 DJs (and one music curator) from Germany, Austria and Greece playing music from midday into the night, each playing one set after the other depending on the mood. We kept playing electronic music, French music, African music, Greek music, and even German music. The nights were only interrupted by concerts from Greek live musicians, which either played traditional Cretan instruments like the Lyra, or mixed their instrument with electronic music to create something new. 🧚🧜🧞

From here on, my holidays turned into one long musical festival (and we danced the nights aways). 🎶🏝️🫶

    Goodbye to the Hammocks 🪂

    September 12, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

What adventures! I will be updating my travel with everything that happened, it was pretty exciting. We weathered a big storm and were cut off on the island. ⛈️🌪️🌧️🌫️🌬️

Before the ferry finally arrived again on Tuesday, we visited our lovely friends at the Kedros bar at Sarakiniko beach. So many hard goodbyes. After such a long time you grow together as a family. One last look at the place where I spent so much time at and met so many wonderful people. 🫶❤️

Then Marika drove us with a hell of her speed with her car to the port so we could catch the ferry just in time. What a beautiful day, just like the one when I arrived on the island. 🌬️⛴️☀️🌊
