    Departure to Greece - Crete

    September 8, 2020 in Greece ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

On 8.9. we have changed our destination from Cyprus to Greece, Crete. Our departure time was at 14.00 and luckily our amazing hosts from workaway gave us a ride to the airport. It was really hard to say goodbye after such a long time living together and sharing the same household. We had a great time with them, learned so much and for sure keep some great memories of this time in our hearts. It also helped us to grow personally and we are grateful for their expertise and knowledge. Efcharistó Tekli and Pavlos! Also for amazing food and endless amount of the best olive oil (Omega 3 👍).

Due to Corona we still decided to be somewhere close to home even if unfortunately the cases here are getting more every day again. School started and slowly it's getting"cold". But yes, first sign that it is getting cold is when Claudia is wearing her big fluffy extra double filled sexy socks (so probably it means that I'm slowly starting to wear again a T-shirt).

In Crete we have started in a small town called Koutoulofari and spent there 3 days. Crete is full of mountains, the village was full of small white coloured houses and tiny streets, where cars are barely able to drive.

    GREECE Chania some days trip

    September 24, 2020 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

We have spent some days in Chania, which is i think the most beautiful and picturesque town in whole Crete. The city of Chania managed to preserve its original colors and historical character, despite the fast-growing tourist industry. The old city has preserved to a great extent the distinctive atmosphere and charm of the Venetian and Turkish periods. Entire Venetian, Turkish and Jewish quarters are saved, with well preserved buildings in the narrow picturesque streets.
We have made a day trip also to Preveli beach. At the exit of the river, a sandy beach with pebbles and sand is formed, with sea water so it was very cool due to the river. But we have luckily survived.

    Crete Greece

    June 24, 2019 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C

Arriving by boat into Heraklion Crete and then driving by night to Rethymno was memorable mostly because of it's danger with unmarked roads, no lighting and a black night, add to this Greek drivers who have little concern for speed or road law. But we arrived safely. Today we went to Melame which is a major site for the battle for Crete in WW2. My uncle served here with the medical corps and was among those who were safely evacuated after climbing over the mountains to escape the Germans paratroopers. Many thousands of troops were saved by the navy who came ashore and took soldiers off the beach. But many others missed the evacuation and lived in caves protected by Greek citizens who put their lives in great danger by doing so. It was moving to visit both the allied cemetery and also the German cemetery as well. Many lives were lost under the New Zealander General Fryberg who we suspect made a poor decision not to defend Hill 107 above the airport. Tomorrow we had back to Heraklion and take the boat back to Athens.Read more

    Day 4, Heraklion, Crete

    December 14, 2019 in Greece ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

Another 8am dock in to Crete, another day of torrential rain. It’s fair to say we’ve been very unlucky with the weather but there ain’t owt we can do about that. Breakfast this morning was in the buffet as we didn’t get up early enough for the restaurant. The food is great though no matter where we eat. We disembarked the ship about 10.30am and it was pouring down. It was a short bus ride to the terminal and then a 15-20 minute walk in to town. Yes, we walked in the pissing down rain with no brolly or owt. Upon reaching the town we sought refuge in a Starbucks where they had outdoor heating. The winds were gusting at up to 40mph but we were fine. A nice cup of tea and a catchup with the world.

We had a wander around the town, some of it under cover thankfully, some of it not. The rain was intermittent although it was more on than off and heavy rather than light. We visited a church ⛪️ and as we were about ready to return to the ship the heavens we’ll and truly opened. So we gave in and bought a brolly before going into a taverna and having a gyros. Best one we’ve had by far, and again a good laugh with the owner. We decided to brave the rain and head back to the ship around 3. It was about a 20 minute walk and five mins it it slowed right down.

Unsure what we’ll be up to tonight, but I’m almost certain it will involve eating and drinking. I’m posting this early as we will be out of signal from now until Monday. Hopefully the weather is set to improve.

    Palace of Phaistos ruins, Crete

    November 16, 2019 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

We love ancient ruins ... these from as early as 2000 BC atop a hill maybe 150m high. Originally a town/city, the royals of the time evicted the owners and built a palace of some 9000 sqm. It's an excellent look at Minoan culture and architecture. Some amazingly well preserved parts. Over the years it was demolished and built on top of at least 3 times and finally destroyed by Romans. So incredible walking on the same paved terraces and steps that have borne human footprints for so long and now have a smooth lustre from the incessant polishing of bare and leather clad feet. The city folk relocated to the foothills and those ruins are visible from the area we visited.Read more
