      Nachdem ich wieder von dem Müll am Strand wirklich gestresst war, ging ich in die Medina
      Ich habe nie eine schönere, aufgeräumtere und wirklich athmospärisch schönere Medina gesehen. Der dazugehörige Park, wirklich wunderschön!
      Die pinkfarbene Mofa mit der bunten Box hätte ich wirklich gerne gekauft:-).
      Heute morgen habe ich mit drei marrokanischen Männern geschimpft, die ihren Müll auf die Strasse geworfen haben. Sie haben nur über mich gelacht! Ich denke sie haben mich nicht verstanden und gedacht, was will die blonde Frau uns denn erzählen!!!      Read more

      Casablanca - Rabat: Trümmerhaufen

      Ich unterhalte mich noch etwas länger mit Brian und breche daher auch erst wieder gegen Mittag auf. Zunächst geht es durch die Vorstädte Casablancas. Allerdings kann man hier fast nicht mehr von Städten oder Dörfern sprechen. Es sieht aus wie in einem Kriegsgebiet. Trümmerhaufen überall und bis auf die Moscheen steht fast keins der ehemaligen Häuser mehr. An manchen Ecken sieht man bereits riesige Neubauten. Was hier genau passiert bzw. was mit den Leuten geschieht, die in den alten Häusern wohnten, weiß ich nicht genau - einige scheinen noch in halben Ruinen zu wohnen oder die Schuttberge nach Materialien zu durchsuchen. Einen Ladenbesitzer, der etwas Englisch kann, spreche ich an. Er sieht etwas wohlhabender aus und meint, die Leute würden woanders neue Häuser bekommen, müssten aber auch dafür bezahlen. Freiwillig scheint das hier allerdings nicht zu passieren.

      Der weitere Weg führt heute leider nur über große Straßen und ist weniger spektakulär. Allerdings merkt man bereits, dass man Rabat der Hauptstadt näher kommt. Die Straßen werden besser, sind durchgehend mit Laternen versehen und es gibt deutlich weniger Müll. Den ersten Abend checke ich in einem Airbnb am Stadtrand ein, klein aber fein. Ich bin erleichtert, angekommen zu sein und fühle mich etwas schlapp und fiebrig - vermutlich durch die längeren Etappen und den Wind der letzten Tage. Ein paar Tage Pause in Rabat werden da bestimmt guttun.      Read more

      Mauseleum of Mohammed V

      Beautiful day, mausoleum is on a bluff where it seems like you can see most of the city, you can see the opera house, the skyscraper, the river, and the Atlantic. The guide said it is the number two mosque in the world behind the Taj Mahal. Views of the Bouregreg River as it meets the Atlantic spectacular with people enjoying the day.Read more

      Rabat, Capital City and Site of Royalty

      After a train ride yesterday from Tangier, we arrived at Rabat, where we would meet our Collette tour group. We have a group of 24 people and a trip leader who is originally from Berber family heritage.

      A little about Morocco: it is a constitutional monarchy, the only monarchy of three remaining in Africa (2 others in former Swaziland). The people love their current king, Mohammed VI. He lives relatively simply—one wife (not multiple), two children, and he chooses to live in the residence he had as the prince, outside of the city, rather than in the royal palace in Rabat.

      Our tour group visited the royal compound (outside only), where formal functions are held. The site is guarded by all the branches of the military, including the royal guards. This practice was instituted after a failed army coup of the reign of Mohammed VI’s father, Hassan II. (That’s what happened to the many other former monarchies in Africa.) Hassan figured if all branches were charged with protecting him, no one group would gain power.

      We also were able to visit only the outside of the Chellah Necropolis, a walled town containing both pre-Roman ruins and a medieval necropolis. Within the last six months, archaeologists have confirmed new discoveries at the site with a footprint almost five times the size of Pompeii, and they were busy at work excavating inside.

      Our last stop with the bus was to the tomb of Mohammed V, the grandfather of the current king. He is much revered, because he negotiated Morocco’s independence from France in 1955.

      With our free afternoon, we had lunch at a Turkish restaurant, visited Rabat’s contemporary art museum and took an hour walk back to our hotel.

      In the evening, we were treated to dinner at a restaurant serving traditional Moroccan fare (which we’ve been enjoying very much in our previous days). We were quite satisfied with the pastilla (flaky pastry chicken pie) and salads, but then came the main dishes! Two different tagines (marinated braised chicken and beef), and roasted chicken on a bed of shredded very light pita bread that was like noodles. Sorry we didn’t get more food photos! Of course there was entertainment, but only by men—drumming and singing.      Read more

      More sights in Rabat

      The new opera house, designed by a Zaha Hadid from Iraq. We stopped outside the Royal Palace and then the unfinished mosque (from the 1300)
      Next we visited Hassan tower, the unfinished mosque, and mausoleum
      We enjoyed a “fish” lunch. Tom had fish soup followed by a plateful of shrimp, fish, calamari and more fish. I enjoyed a vegetable platter, with rice completed with lots of white fish!

      Rabat Afternoon

      So, group touring. It has been a long time since I have travelled on a tour. I’m a little cranky about the herd and time limits. I’m guessing this is also just adjusting to everything from my Portuguese journey. I’ll be fine. I just need a minute.

      Rabat is pristine. It is the capitol city and home base for the King. We visited the old (11th and 12th century old) medina and the King’s palace. Our guide for this part was nearly impossible to understand at times. I miss a lot.

      What I learned was that the King is also the President of Morocco and does wield a fair amount of power. Unfortunately, he was in so we couldn’t go in to the palace.

      It is fascinating to see these places and over the centuries the influences and strictures applied and imposed by each.

      On one of our coffee breaks, there was a bus load of young Jewish men all decked out in their tallits and those curly sideburns which I can’t remember how to spell. My assumptions were that Jews would not be welcomed because of the strong Muslim culture. I think I might be wrong about that. A question to ask.

      Rabat Tag 1 - Oudaya

      Wir nutzten an diesem Morgen alle die Möglichkeit ausschlafen zu können und noch nichts geplant zu haben. So ging es nach dem Frühstück erst einmal in den wunderschönen Garten in die Hängematte und dort blieben wir bis Mittags. Da Jamie und Laura aber natürlich auch etwas von Marokko sehen wollten und nicht nur im Vorgarten von Almutes Haus Mittagsschlaf halten wollten (womit ich aktuell definitiv kein Problem gehabt hätte ;-) ), fuhren wir mit dem Auto zur Oudaya am Strand von Rabat. Dort zeigte Almute uns die andalusischen Gärten und die alte Oudaya und wir gingen anschließend noch einen Tee trinken an der mittlerweile sehr touristischen Promenade des Flusses Bou Regreg, welcher Sale und Rabag voneinander trennt.

      Auf dem Rückweg fuhren wir die Küstenstraße entlang und schauten uns den Sonnenuntergang an einem kleinen Strandabschnitt außerhalb von Rabat an, wo Almute früher oft mit ihrem Mann Benasser spazieren ging. Abendessen gab es dann Zuhause gefolgt von einem kleinen Arabisch-Kurs von Almute. Was für eine verrückte Sprache... !      Read more

      Der Chef unseres Stellplatzes fährt uns mit seinem Boot durch die Lagune. Wir können Silberreiher, Enten, Möwen, Kormorane, Flamingos, Bussarde und einen Fischadler beim Fischen sehen.
      Eine abenteuerliche Landstraße führt dann Richtung Rabat, wo wir mitten in einen Markt gelangen. Im weiteren Verlauf ist die Straße von Schlaglöchern gesäumt. Wir sind froh, als wir endlich eine Autobahnauffahrt erreichen.
      In Rabat werden wir von einer blitzsauberen, Palmen und Lampen gesäumten Allee empfangen.
      Direkt am Eingang zur Medina finden wir einen Übernachtungsplatz und stürzen uns ins Getümmel.      Read more

      Das Mausoleum von Mohammed V

      Ich habe gerade das Mausoleum von Mohammed V. besucht. Ich wurde wieder ermahnt, da ich eine Treppe runter gehen wollte, was verboten war. An jedem Eingang stehen Tag und Nacht zwei Reiter. Es waren viele Schulklassen und Kindergärten da, die das anscheinend als grosse Spielwiese nutzten und extrem laut waren....:-(

      Ich danke allen, die mich privat anschreiben und sich für die Fotos und Berichte herzlich bedanken!
      Das macht mir Mut und motiviert mich!
      Und es freut mich sehr, dass ihr irgendwie ein bisschen mit mir mitreist!
      Gerade jetzt an den Wochenenden weiss ich, dass ihr alle mit euren Familien, Ehemännern oder Freundinnen zusammen seit, das ist doppelt schwer für mich, wenn ich alleine an einem zugemüllten Strand hocke.....      Read more

      In order to avoid what seemed to be bad roads and traffic, took the bus to Rabat. Quite easy - just rolled the bikes into luggage compartment. Toured around - visiting the Atlantic Ocean, the Kasbah and the mausoleum. Also found a clandestine liquor cave store. Quite bizarre. Nice fish dinner.Read more
