      Surat Bay, Roaring bay & Nugget point

      This morning we checked out of fhe hostel and walked down to Surat Bay just at the end of the drive at the hostel. It was a cold, windy and raining today. We spotted a large sea lion on the beach after walking a while. I was surprised how big it was. He was sleeping. We walked a bit further and spotted another one. This one was more awake. I got some pictures of it yawning. It was amazing to see them for the first time.

      Next we drove to Nugget point. We walked to the lighthouse and saw the Nugget rocks. The sea was a beautiful turquoise colour. It was very windy here. We then drove down to Kaka point a seaside town where we met our friend Jeanine who was travelling around the south island the opposite direction to us. We had a coffee and carrot cake and enjoyed a catch up.

      After that we drove to Roaring bay in the hope to see the rare yellow eyed penguins. There was a viewing hut where you look out for them. You can't go on to the beach because they get distressed if you get too close. We waited patiently for about 40 minutes then suddenly we saw one the other side of the beach when we walked out the viewing hut. It was a yellow eyed penguin walking up the beach. A family told us there was another one down on the beach near the hut. It was very cute it fell over a couple of times on the sand. We were lucky to see some. The yellow eyed penguins are one of the rarest penguins in the world and only found in New Zealand.

      Next we drove to Dunedin. We cheeked in to our hostel the Manor backpackers. We are in a 8 bed dorm here. We went to the duke of Wellington pub in the evening. We enjoyed a pint of tribute which I was surprised they had. We had this beer in Cornwall before.      Read more

      Exploring Dunedin & Otago Peninsula

      This morning we got up about 9am. It was nice to have a lie in and not be rushing around to leave early. I had a day planned for everyone. First we drove to Dunedin botanical gardens. It was a lovely sunny day but a little chilly. It was a beautiful big garden with trees, a large pond, rivers and a few bridges and a heated Edwardian glass house full of exotic plants.

      Next we drove to Baldwin Street- the steepest residential Street in the World. It was quite steep walking up but they had steps on either side to make it easier. We also drove to the train station a beautiful old building from 1906. Seen in the picture below.

      We then enjoyed a curry at a local restaurant/takeaway. For $10 we got butter chicken, rice, naan and a drink. Really cheap for NZ. It was delicious.

      After this we drove to Sandfly bay in the hope to see some more yellow eyed penguins and some sea lions. A lot of places you have to pay to go and see them on the otago peninsula. But I read on a blog online that you can go to Sandfly bay to see them for free. We walked up and down some steep sand dunes to get to the bay. As soon as we arrived we could see 4 large sea lions. It was definitely the place to be to see wildlife. It was a lovely sandy beach and the waves were crashing in. After patiently waiting we saw a little penguin come out the sea. He waddled up a steep sand dune. It looked like he was struggling as the wind was against him and the sand was blowing towards him. We were all hoping the little penguin would make it to the top where his nest was. In the the end he made it. Its a tough life being a penguin. We then spotted another one who walked up a small sand dune stopped half way for a scratch and then wondered off in to the bushes.

      We also saw a sea lion slide down a sand dune it was great fun to watch. We then saw one make his way to the sea, he would take a few steps and then stop yawn and carry on. I managed to catch a video of this on my nikon camera. It was a great day full of wildlife.

      5. Nacht in Dunedin

      Die heutige Nacht haben wir in Dunedin, auf dem Freedom Camping Platz "The Oval", mitten in der Stadt, verbracht. Nicht schön, nicht ruhig, aber zweckmäßig und kostenlos.

      Die Oropax haben die Nacht trotzdem ganz angenehm gemacht. Wir überlegen beim Frühstück, wie es weitergehen soll. Das Wetter für die nächsten Tage soll nicht gut werden. Entweder, wir fahren jetzt schon nach Queenstown, wo es noch am besten sein soll, oder wir fahren doch noch weiter in den Süden, in der Hoffnung, dass es nicht so schlimm wird. Einen Tag werden wir auf jeden Fall "verlieren".

      Wir verschieben die Entscheidung auf später und gehen erstmal in Otago Settlers Museum. Siehe eigener Footprint.

      Nach dem Museum schauen wir uns noch den alten viktorianischen Bahnhof an. Der beherbergt heute ein Restaurant im einen Flügel, und eine Kunstgalerie und ein Sportmuseum im anderen Flügel. Leider wird gerade der eine Flügel von außen renoviert.

      Ganz grundsätzlich gibt es in Dunedin hier und da noch schöne alte Gebäude. Wir wundern uns, warum am heutigen Montag alle Geschäfte geschlossen haben. Nichts hat auf. Auch die meisten Restaurants sind geschlossen. Wir wir rausfinden ist irgendein Feiertag.

      Hm, also alles geschlossen, was tun wir? Wir setzten uns im s.g. "The Octagon" auf eine Bank, denn hier gibt's freies WiFi. Wir checken das Wetter und mögliche Routen die wir fahren könnten. Eigentlich ist alles blöd. Letztendlich entscheiden wir uns weiter nach Süden zu fahren, und 1-2 Nächte auf einem Campground zu verbringen. Die Wahl fällt auf den Campingplatz in "Kaka Point".

      Wir fahren um 17:00 in Dunedin los, und erreichen den Campingplatz gegen 19:00.
      Wasser nachfüllen (war tatsächlich leer), dann Essen kochen und einen Wein auf die "Halbzeit". Wahnsinn, wir sind schon 64 Tage unterwegs!!!      Read more

      Die Strecke von Oamaru nach Dunedin war sehr beeindruckend! Auf der einen Seite hügelige Landschaften und auf der anderen Seite das Meer! Hätte echt öfter anhalten sollen 😊.

      Dunedin

      Heute ist das Wetter noch ganz okay. Als es mittags etwas trockener wird, drehen wir eine Stadtrunde anhand einer Karte mit historischen Gebaeuden, die wir in der Stadtinformation bekommen. U.a. gibt es so einige Kirchen und einen alten, schoenen Bahnhof aus dem heutzutage nur noch zweimal am Tag ein historischer Zug startet. Dann geht’s ins Siedler-Museum, wo das Leben der Ureinwohner und der Siedler von den Anfaengen in 1848 bis heute anschaulich dargestellt wird. Dunedin wurde von Schotten gegruendet und wird noch heute „ein Stueck Schottland am anderen Ende der Welt“ genannt.Read more

      Dunedin

      Vandaag mogen we niet klagen over het weer. Als het ‘s middadgs wat droger wordt, lopen we een ronde door de stad. We hebben bij de stadsinformatie een kaart gehaald waar alle historische gebouwen op staan. Er zijn o.a. meerdere kerken en een mooi, oud treinstation dat vandaag de dag nog steeds in gebruik is, echter maar 2 keer per dag door de ‚historische‘ trein. Daarna nemen we een kijkje in het Otago Museum, waar het leven van de inheemse bevolking en de kolonisten van begin 1848 tot nu op een duidelijke en zeer informatieve manier wordt weergegeven. Dunedin werd door de Schotten gesticht en wordt tot op de dag van vandaag nog „een stuk Schotland aan de andere kant van de wereld“ genoemd.Read more

      Cycloon Cook

      Regen…storm… Cycloon Cook raast over Nieuw-Zeeland… Via de televisie worden de mensen gewaarschuwd. Een goed moment voor ons om (warm en droog) aan de planning van onze Australie reis te beginnen.

      Zyklon Cook

      Regen…Sturm…Der Zyklon Cook rast ueber NZ… Ueber das Fernsehen werden die Leute gewarnt.
      Ein guter Moment fuer uns (im Trockenen) um anzufangen unsere Australien-Reise zu planen.

      Die zweitgrößte Stadt der Südinsel ist Dunedin mit 129 Tausend (etwas größer als Hildesheim), die wir uns zuerst von einem Aussichtspunkt aus angeguckt haben. Danach sind wir ins Center gefahren, welches von dem Einfluss der schottischen Einsiedler geprägt ist, wobei vor allem der Bahnhof ins Auge fällt.Read more
