      Goodbye tent?

      February 10, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

New Zealand really wanted to get rid of us, or at least the sandflys made us think so. As soon as the sun rose behind the mountains and it got pleasantly warm in the tent, they were all up again swarming between the tent layers, around the entrance or just chilled on top of the tent. It was a shame because instead of enjoying breakfast on our beach towels at the lake surrounded by mountains we had to flee into the car. And the most annoying thing about it is that none else seems to have this problem. It's as if all the sandflies in the wider area collectively decide that we are the target. The 2 other tents at the camping were totally fine and the guy next to us almost couldn't believe it when he saw the sandflies around us and our tent. So apparently we just smell really good, as does our tent, and our car, apparently... After hastily packing our stuff we drove off to brush our teeth somewhere else. We just wanted to get out of there.

On the way back to Christchurch we stopped at the Castle Hill Limestones. A fun walk among humongous boulders. Like the elephant boulders we saw some time ago, but then even better. We had a typical New Zealand pie somewhere for lunch, and had a few other quick stops with not so noteworthy viewpoints. Arriving in Christchurch, we still had quite a few things to do before our flight. Grocery shopping, a stop at the farmacy, laundry, and a much needed hairdresser for Machiel. Especially the laundry at the campsite became an issue when it just didn't want to dry quickly enough. At least no sandflies though. In the meantime we made a wraps dinner and booked the transportation for the Fiji islands. After a shower it was time for bed. The weird thing was that we didn't know if this was the last time we would sleep in this tent. For the next 3.5 months we most likely won't sleep in any tent and seeing how the front zipper slowly stops working and the tent is more than 6 years old, it would be an easy way to save some space and weight. And while Machiel can think about this very rationally, Susanne struggles more as this became our home over the past months.

      My birthday and Hunanui river

      November 17, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌬 15 °C

Well it was my 69th birthday. Booked a first table at the fine dinning restaurant in the arts centre in Christchurch which turned out to be owned by Chillingworth St restaurant where we have been before. Food is first class. The waiter was lovely and brought me a birthday cake at the end of the meal. Then onto One Shot owned by Two Thumbs a company we have shares in. A different sort of bar you can play computer games as you enjoy a drink or meal. First time I I have played Mario. Came twelve out of twelve for the first ten or so racers then Mike explained a few things and came sixth on the next race. Delighted!!! Could be quite addictive though!!
On Saturday we went back to the place we spent our first night ever in our camper van. A place next to the Hurunui river where someone has created a garden. That was after having lunch on Amberley beach. Steve was going to fish but it was just too windy. Then onto the river where we did some off-roading. Got stuck twice but Mikes van has a winch so was able to use convenient trees to haul us out. I was a complete coward and jumped out when the water came in over the sills. Waded for dry ground. Great fun though! Campfire at night on the side of the Hurunui river, no one else there.
Tried surf fishing the next day but no luck.

      Beyond Karamea

      January 13 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

With great sadness we left Karamea.
The other side of the mountain is a campsite called Gentle Annie’s, highly rated we decided to stay a couple of nights. This would have been a great site outside of school holidays but it was heaving and the facilities did not stand up to the pressure. That said we did a pleasant bush walk, the Bali style showers were really good and we made use of the woodfired pizza oven which produced great tasting pizzas.
Two nights was enough though so onward towards Westport. We had heard that the road Denniston had been opened so we tried again. Well worth the effort! This town on the top of the hill grew up around the coal mines. Only a handful of houses there now but lots of history and fantastic views. The coal was carried down to the coast in overhead wagons. (Aerial ropeway) A bit like cable cars but carrying coal. As always just amazing engineering.
Another couple of nights at Westport where we visited our first AP show, agricultural and pastoral. Like our agricultural shows with the addition of speed log cutting and axe throwing competitions. Fairground rides were very old fashioned. Could have been Beamish.

The road back to Christchurch and around

      January 14 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌬 27 °C

Stopped off at Reefton on the way back to Christchurch. Rain plus sandflies meant we only stayed a couple of nights.
Plus a couple of nights at Rangiora where we visited the RSA club. Burns suppers advertised, it’s a thing here too!
The idea was to spend the rest of our time in Christchurch playing bridge and table tennis. BUT decided to spend another weekend at the Springfield domain site which we visited before Christmas. Big mistake!! Fell playing tennis and broke my wrist. Spent six and a half hours in the emergency department and only got out just in time to meet Steve and Mike for a first table that we had booked. All plans up the swanny!!!!

      Canterbury sheep farm!

      November 1, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

What a fun day. We got to sleep in. Then, we took a bus into the area of Canterbury to a sheep farm. We were able to learn about the types of dogs used and trained for sheep herding. Then we got to watch them work. We then got to play with a few alpacas and take a few photos....the white one is a real ham!. We watched the farmer shear a sheep and even got to help a bit!. Brian was the sheep sorting worker of the day. He managed the right sort. Then they served us an amazing herders lunch and let us wander around and meet the rest of the animals. We then headed back to Christchurch. We had time to take a punt on the Avon River. A punt is the pole used to push a flat bottom boat on a shallow river that has a slow current. This is the only place besides England that has this ability, per our punt pushing captain. It was so peaceful and beautiful. The river is full of eel that are like well trained fish that are used to being fed. We were on our own for dinner so 8 of us took an Uber to eat at Smoke and Barrel. A restaurant owned and operated by the nephew of our Noblesville friend Dave Purcell, Cory Blackburn. He took great care of us at the restaurant and even delivered our food personally! A big board of smoked ribs, brisket, lamb, beef cheeks, and veggies. Sooooo good! Really fun day. Long bus ride tomorrow heading to Duneden.Read more

      Christmas in Canterbury

      December 25, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Christmas looked a little different this year 🎄

We started the day speaking with our families and tucking into bacon butties. Then we headed out for a walk in the nearby town, which took us along the estuary and to the beach. Long story short, we took a massive detour and ended up in some mud flats surrounded by birds - Immy was loving life!

Eventually we made it to the beach for our picnic and Jonny had a refreshing dip in the Pacific.

Arriving back home, we tucked into some New Zealand lamb, new season asparagus, roasties and a lovely bottle of Syrah. We had hoped the wood fired hot tub would then be ready for us, but after six hours of heating up it was very much tepid! But we got in regardless and enjoyed some star gazing to end another lovely day!

      Wwoofen bei Angela und Nick

      August 25, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 6 °C

Read more
