  • Nitmiluk to Mataranka

    5 september 2017, Australië ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

We headed to the 9am 2 Gorge Dreaming Cruise we booked into around 8.30am. The whole park was blacked out for some reason so everything was running a bit behind. The cruise location is only a 900m easy walk from the campground (almost no stairs!). The park have recently had a large influx of bats which had us feeling right at home, unfortunately the walk took us through their roosting area which wasn't pleasant.

After a late start the cruise took us through the first Gorge which was lush and green and incredibly calm. Although we saw a crocodile trap we didn't see any of the anticipated fresh water crocs we were expecting. They are not considered dangerous to people at all according to our guide. The last person injured by one was trying to move it to get a better photo.

Half an hour in and we stopped and had to walk about 400m to the boat taking us to the next Gorge. On the walk we were able to see a few rock paintings and and take in the beautiful landscape. Apparently I took a little too long taking it all in and held up the boat. The second Gorge was also stunning as we saw more of the expected cliff walls we were expecting. It was amazing seeing so many trees growing on an angle due to the pressure of the water during the wet season. We also saw an area that turns into an enormous whirlpool during the wet season and has created depths of up to 55m in that area. It was wonderful.

On the way back to the van we stopped at the visitors centre and got the girls their Nitmiluk pins. The girls have been collecting pins from all the places we've stayed. They're earning quite a collection! As we packed up we noticed several red tailed black cockatoos in a nearby tree. It was really something else seeing them in the wild. And that restarted the girls talking about all the birds they want us to get as pets for the rest of the day!

We stopped at Katherine again for bread and milk then we were nonstop to Mataranka! It took us about 10mins to check in and get changed ready for a swim. Jon missed out the first time we were here so it was great that he got to experience it here before he headed home. We swam for about 45 minutes before saying our goodbyes to Jon, then stayed in nearly an hour longer before deciding we needed to dry off and and head back to the van.

We've had a lovely relaxing afternoon just chilling out and seeing some of the local wildlife. With the next few days being predominantly driving as we head towards the Daintree, this afternoon was just what we needed!

  • Mataranka to Banka Banka Station

    6 september 2017, Australië ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

We got up this morning, had breakfast and headed down to the springs for one last swim. Mataranka has definitely been a favourite on the trip so far. After we dried off we jumped in the car and headed off about 10am towards Banka Banka Station. The girls got started on some homework early which was good although Paige didn't last long.

We stopped at The Daly Waters Pub for lunch on the way. It's such a nice place to stop and a little surreal given how many times we've seen it on TV and online. I had hoped to take a few photos of the Wild red tailed black cockatoos that frequent the area but they were off somewhere else and we weren't waiting around.

Apart from a couple of toilet breaks and a fuel stop at Renner Creek we made pretty good time, arriving at Banka Banka at about 4.30. No pool here but the girls didn't take long to go see their camel and donkey friends. Joe had a good chat to a guy from Mildura and the girls got their cat fix patting his cat Mo who travels with them happily on a lead.

Sausages and salad for dinner then toasting marshmallows by the camp fire will be in order. An early night with a big day of driving tomorrow and the next day as we head towards the Daintree.

  • Driving Mt Isa

    7 september 2017, Australië ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

We were up at 6am, put the girls in the car in their PJ's and headed towards Mt Isa. We stopped at the Barkly Roadhouse for some pricey fuel and some breakfast in the van. We also spotted an Aviary with a couple of Red Tailed Black Cockatoos which the girls got a kick out of.

We continued on. A lot of long straight roads with some changes in the landscape but not changing as quickly as other part of the trip. One thing we did notice was that we were on a slow but steady assent from the Lake Eyre Basin. We crossed the Queensland boarder around 1pm then made a quick stop in Camooweal for lunch. The girls caught up on some homework and reading and begrudgingly took a break from their much loved DVD players.

Between the slow climb and strong head winds we discovered the car was going through fuel much faster and we just made it to Mt Isa as the fuel light came on!

We filled up and went to the Big 4 (after google maps sent us to the wrong caravan park). We arrived about 4.30 and had enough daylight left to get some washing done before dinner.

Early to bed, ready for another big driving day tomorrow.

  • Driving to Croydon

    8 september 2017, Australië ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

We left Mt Isa a little late at 7.40 and headed out of town through rocky hills and winding road. Once we turned North we were faced with more headwinds and a very long straight road. The landscape became much more grassy and didn't change as often as it seemed earlier in the trip.

We stopped at the Burke and Wills Roadhouse for fuel and a stretch. The girls had spent the last hour and a half doing homework so they got a treat and a new DVD for the next stint.

The road went from good to only one lane of sealed road in long sections. There isn't much traffic up here and we only needed to move off to let people past twice. The landscape was mostly grassy grazing land for the braman cattle. We also saw fields of termite mounds, and I mean by the hundreds. It's really something to see.

We took a small detour to Normington around 1.30 to check out the Purple Pub Jon had told us about. The plan was to stop for lunch but the kitchen had closed early so it was back in the car and drove down the road to stop and have a bite in the van. Normington is a quiet little town. So very isolated. If you ever wanted to disappear for a while, that's the place to go!

As we continued on you could see the areas that would be most affected by the wet season. We've crossed countless large, deep river beds completely dry. But with the flood area signs everywhere I can only imagine what this area is like during the wet season.

We reached Croydon and enjoyed our site by the pool while the girls swam. We've made a few changes to our final weeks, fitting in a caravan park / water park on our way past the Whitsundays!

Looking forward to a nice quiet evening and a much shorter trip in the car tomorrow.

  • Driving to Undara

    9 september 2017, Australië ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

The short driving day turned out to be more than we bargained for!

We left Croydon just after 9 after we searched the few shops for pins to add to the girls growing collection. The landscape had a lot more trees as we headed towards the east coast we crossed some really huge dry river beds. The Gilbert River was at least 60m across. The Etheridge river was at least 100m across of dry sand which got us talking about the volume of water that must go through these areas in the wet season.

Again the road chopped and changed between two lane and single lane which reduces the road to the width of a driveway. Not a problem unless someone is coming the other way. We had this a little more often today compared to yesterday. We also had a near miss with a Wedge Tailed Eagle. We've seen a few but they usually fly away long before the car gets close. This one skimmed across the windscreen before flying away. It gave us one hell of a fright.

As we drove along the wind picked up a few times which kept us on our toes keeping an eye on the caravan for any sign of sway. At one point we could feel a worrying amount of movement but the van seemed steady. Then I saw the tyre. By the time we stopped the rear passenger side tyre was pretty much shredded and all the shoulder areas were slopped. Not the best place to stop. We got the kids out of the car and Joe got to work. About 2 minutes later we had a tour bus stop to make sure we were ok. About 10 minutes later a lovely couple travelling with their caravan pulled over to lend a hand. Rob and Cheryl were great help and made the job much quicker. As it turned out they were also heading to Undara so we looked forward to catching up with them later.

Once we were all done we made our way 10 minutes down the road to a little town called Mt Surprise. We found where we could get a new tire on the rim but the guy had finished up for the day and wasn't home. So we continued to Undara. Thankfully duel highway the rest of the way. We suspect it was going on and off the edge of the road that brought about our predicament.

We got to Undara and set up. It's a very unique caravan park with train carriages turned into cabins, reception and restaurant. We found two Tawny Frog Mouth owls just outside the caravan door and red tailed black Cockatoos and rainbow lorikeets flying around.

We soon spotted Rob and Cheryl not far away and went to say thank you again. They said they had been helped out the night before after blowing a very unusual fuse and were just paying it forward. And so will we.

After missing out on a couple of activities we had planned for the day we decided to have dinner at the restaurant. It was a great spot! We had dinner inside one of the converted train carriages which the girls got a huge kick out of. The meals were good although it was all a bit pricey but we expected that.

We hope to make it back here one day and do the Lava tube tour and see the extinct volcano in the national park. For now the plan is to get to Kuranda tomorrow as planned and get our spare tyre fixed first thing Monday.

They say you haven't seen outback Australia if you haven't blown a tyre. I guess we did it right!

  • Driving to Kuranda

    10 september 2017, Australië ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

We headed off about 9am, a little cautious after Joe found the spare tyre we put in yesterday had lost some pressure overnight. With no chance of getting a new spare before Monday we continued on to Kuranda. Our fuel stop and tyre check 100km down the road helped with our concerns with the tyre keeping pressure.

We continued on to Atherton and The Crystal Cave! If I had been her as a kid I would've blown a decade of pocket money! It's all hands on and the girls were amazed every time they turned around. We spent a few minutes looking around the shop before doing the tour of the cave created by the owner to display his personal collection. Anything not behind glass and within reach could be touched. A huge number of crystals and fossils of all sizes from all over the world. Including the biggest amethyst geode in the world! The girls were in awe! We spent ages in the shop afterwards which Joe coped very well with. Once decisions were finally made and purchased, we went back to the van for a quick bite of lunch before continuing on.

I'm still amazed at how red every still is despite being so close to the coast. Although everything is lush and green, you occasionally see the odd blood red patch of dirt in paddocks along the side of the roads.

We got to Kuranda around 2.30 and set up. We've found a tyre service to go to in the morning with a supermarket up the road in nearby Smithfield, then back to see Kuranda for the rest of the day tomorrow. As for today we will be chilling out in the beautiful rainforest atmosphere.

  • Kuranda

    11 september 2017, Australië ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Well, after a few phone calls it appears the spare tyre will have to wait till tomorrow with no one within an hour's drive having a tyre that will fit our spare. Joey did track down a place that will be on our way to the Daintree tomorrow so the tyre is on hold till then.

With that sorted we headed down into Kuranda for our much anticipated day at Birdworld, Koala Gardens and the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary. We went to Birdworld first, knowing we could come back again later if we wanted. The girls couldn't wait to get in. The birds were a little more stand offish than expected but we put that down to the deck area being pressure cleaned. We walked around the winding path looking at Cassuaries, the water bird area, and just the massive range of birds flying around. Poor Paige who had gone off on her own had came up to me in tears after a smaller bird bit her on the cheek. This made her more than a little weary but we still had a great time interacting with so many birds. Joe made friends with one of the Macaws fairly quickly. The majority of the birds kept being spooked by some sort of bird of prey sitting in a tree just outside the aviary. We were told this was also impacting on how many of the birds were interacting with people so we decided to move on to Koala Gardens and come back to the birds later.

After a bite in the Frog Cafe for morning tea we went into Koala Gardens which is more or less your average small petting zoo and a great place for the kids. We got our first look at fresh water crocodiles and the girls also got the opportunity to hold a koala and get a photo. The girls loved feeding the roos and the food was freely available which was great. They had a good nocturnal exhibit where we saw Bilbies among a few things and a few reptile displays which we sort of skimmed as we went past. We've seen a lot of reptiles on this trip!

We left Koala Gardens and went into the Butterfly Sanctuary which was very similar to the Butterfly house in Coffs Harbour. Apart from the butterfly's themselves there was also a caterpillar room and a desk with a tray of butterflies under a microscope that the girls could move and focus on any part of the butterflies and he image could be seen on a screen above. Once the girls made their souvenir choices we headed back to Birdworld for another look.

The birds were much more sociable when we got there. It didn't take long before Joe and Lara had birds all over them. Joe's macaw came back not long after arrived and wasn't interested in anyone else. He even had some Indian tourists have their photo taken with Joe and the Macaw because it wouldn't sit on them. Poor Paige wanted to hold bird but was frightened whenever they went near her. Joe managed to get the macaw onto her for a minute but it quickly wanted him back. Lol.

Before we knew it the girls were starving and we realised it was already 3pm. We had one last look through the market on the way back to the car. It's a permanent market and includes the entrances to all three attractions within a reasonably small area.

We went back to the van for lunch. The Kuranda Rainforest Accomodation where we are stay is only a two minute drive from where we were. After lunch we took a drive into Smithfield for groceries. They have a huge new shopping centre. Being on the outskirts of Cairns it was only a 20 minute drive although most of the narrow road was very steep and full of tight turns.

We had a quiet evening making phone calls before we are without any service for a few days in the Daintree. Just need to sort out my 3000+ photos on the laptop before bed and we'll be ready to head north in the morning!

  • Driving to the Daintree

    12 september 2017, Australië ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

We had a pretty low key morning packing up and headed off from Kuranda just before 10. It wasn't long before we got our first glimpse of the beach. A huge reminder of just how far we've travelled. The lush green Rainforest gave way to sugarcane fields. We stopped at Mossman for a couple of new tyres ($$ouch) then kept going towards the Daintree.

We reached the ferry across the Daintree River. The girls were a little apprehensive about driving the car and caravan onto a boat. $37 for a return ticket (no specific return date). They fit about 12 cars plus two camper trailers and our caravan and the trip took about two minutes. I'll admit I was more than a little excited to reach the other side. Going to the Daintree has been something I've wanted to do since I was a teenager. As we drove off the boat and up the narrow road through the stunning rainforest I was teary knowing how much Pete would've loved being here and how happy he would've been for me.

There was no warning about just how narrow the roads were. The first 10km are terribly winding and the van would've taken up the full width of our side of the road. A bit scary when you have a truck coming down the opposite side!

When we arrived at the Lync-Haven Rainforest Accommodation we were greeted by several snakes on the ground and 4 Eclectus parrots sitting out on the backs of chairs outside the restaurant/office. Once we set up we went back for a late lunch and had a better look at the wild life. On the way back from lunch we had a looked at several aviaries of rescued and donated birds and their area for rescued wallabies. Before we got back to the van we bumped into the owners who were walking their two pure dingoes. We weren't able to pat them but the owners were very knowledgeable. Apparently it's estimated only 5% of dingoes in the wild are actually pure breed dingoes with cross breeding with wild dogs their biggest threat.

We spent the rest of the afternoon doing washing and looking through pamphlets of things to do in the area. We took a walk around the small caravan park area then through one of the shorter rainforest walks on the property. It's so beautiful up here. The sounds, the smells, the thick, never ending trees and the massive variety among them. It's incredible.

  • Cape Tribulation

    13 september 2017, Australië ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

After a getting a few things done at the van we headed north towards Cape Tribulation! Where the rainforest meets the sea. It was about a 40 minute drive from Lync-Haven through the winding rainforest lined road. It is so beautiful here. I would bottle the air if I could. The perfect mix of ocean and rainforest smells and not a hint of dust.

We arrived to find the car park pretty full. You walk down a path surrounded by rainforest which just seems to stop and open to the white sand. We walked across the sand to the water. If it weren't for the crocodile warnings I could've walked straight in. The water was as warm as the Mataranka Springs.

We walked to the far end of the beach, ankle deep through the water. The girls found a few small shells, we found a small pipi and let the girls watch it dig itself in and tried to figure out what the sparkle is through the sand.

When we got to the end we found the mouth of the river from the book 'Where the rainforest meets the sea'. We walked in as far as we could safely. Being low tide we saw school's of fish stuck in puddles and looked for signs of crocs (but we didn't find any). We headed back along the rainforest edge of the beach, spotting coconut trees and taking photos. As we headed back to the car we found the path to the lookout and decided to have a look before headed back to the van.

We had some lunch and brought in the washing when a lady walking by mentioned see a Cassuarie on one on the walking trails so we headed out for a look. The walking trails here are great. You have to watch for large tree roots across the path but it is beautiful thick, lush green rainforest all around you. We didn't spot the cassuary but we had a great time.

Once we finished the trail the girls headed back to the van while Joe and I had another look at the resident animals. Joe managed a few catch up texts on the one bar of 3G service we get on and off. Before we knew it it was time for dinner and a movie in the van. A really good day. I just love it up here!

  • The Daintree Discovery Centre

    14 september 2017, Australië ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

After Joey's pancakes for breakfast we had planned on going on the caravan park's tour of their rescued animals and other animals they keep here but the owner came to pre warn us he had a school group along for the morning and we probably wouldn't be able to do as much with the large number of people. We decided to put off our tour till Saturday however Paige decided to join in with the school group and absolutely loved it!

When she came back we went to the nearby Daintree Discovery Centre. This is an award winning educational experience of the Daintree where you are given a small speaker which gives you specific information by pressing the numbers when you come to a sign. Exceptionally well put together and also comes with a booklet for additional information to keep. (You get 10% discount on your entry if let them know you're staying in the Daintree)

The first area is an Ariel Walkway taking you on a walk through the mid canopy with information on what you see as you go. Then we got to the 23m tower taking you to the top of the canopy and 4 bars of 3G phone reception which Joe discovered very quickly! We completed the next three areas and returned to the main building and tried their bush tucker tasting plate which we all enjoyed.

We got back to the van and decided on cheese and biscuits for our late lunch. We spent the rest of the afternoon just hanging around the van or looking around the caravan park. Listening to the sounds of the rainforest is so relaxing (when I can get everyone else to be quiet!) Such a beautiful place to be.

  • Jungle Surfing through the Daintree

    15 september 2017, Australië ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Paige was up at the crack of dawn ready to help Justin, the owner, feed the birds. Lara decided to go as well. They came back about an hour later, very pleased with helping out!

We had breakfast and headed off to Jungle Surfing! It is a series of six zip lines through the rainforest canopy. Definitely something to experience! Very pricey ($95 for kids $105 for adults) but a great one off activity.

To start with the girls got in the human hamster wheel to get Joe and I up to the first platform. They were particularly looking forward to that bit. Then other people in the group hoped on the wheel to get the girls up and so on. The first three sections were in pairs and the girls insisted on going together and that they went first. At each platform our guides Ben and Noel would tell us about the area we could see along with information about the trees and the wildlife. Occasionally we saw Ulysses Butterflies flying around but I wasn't quick enough with the camera to catch one. They are apparently one of the fastest butterflies in the world as protection as their brilliant blue colouring makes them easy for predators to spot.

From the third platform we could see through the rainforest, across Cape Tribulation beach and out to sea to the Great Barrier Reef. It was awe inspiring. The following zip line was the longest at 78m long. They slowed you down half way across so you could really get a good look from about 18m above ground level. The forth zip line was our first individual trip and was a lot faster than the others. The fifth was also individually and we all flew through the canopy up-side-down! The last was a race to the finish in pairs side by side and it was very quick!

We got back to the gift shop and picked up our photos and ducked in to the Turtle Rock Cafe for lunch before heading back to the van. The girls got their blogs started for the day before heading to reception for iceblocks.

We had a very quiet afternoon at the van. The girls watched a movie while I sorted photos on the laptop and Joe practiced his chanter. It's five weeks today since we left on our adventure and I'm still amazed at all the things we've managed to see and do. Once we leave the Daintree we will officially be on our way home with a few fun stops along the way. It's really been a dream trip. So many more places we want to see now but we're all looking forward to being home again. Only two weeks left of our first real Australian adventure.

  • Daintree Lynx-Haven Rainforest Accom

    16 september 2017, Australië ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

For our last day in the Daintree we decided to stay at the caravan park and just chill out. We started the day with our chance to pay forward the help we were given with our tyre when Joe noticed the French tourists across from us had locked their keys in their car and were looking seriously concerned it took Joe nearly half an hour and two coat hangers to save the very embarrassed and stressed young couple who were very grateful. The look of utter relief on their faces when the car was unlocked was priceless.

At 10am we did the tour of the rescue that is part of the caravan park. The owners Justin and Kristy have built on what the previous owner started and currently house 3 crocodiles, 19 wallabies and two pure Dingoes. About half the wallabies are to be released back into the wild while the others are what he calls 'lifers' and will stay here and be used to educate visitors.

As well as these animals they also have about 3 cockatiels, a cranky little conure, lorikeets, galahs, 15 Eclectus Parrots and several snakes. On any given day 6 parrots and 2 snakes can be found free ranging in the grasses area in front of the restaurant or on stands around the seated area. It's fantastic to be able to see these animals out of their cages. There are multiple signs up telling people not to touch the animals (and if you've ever seen the results of an Eclectus bite you would understand) but just being able to see them out like that is a great experience.

After the tour Joe and I sat for about an hour watching the snakes being unusually active and possum (a disabled Eclectus) climb over the chairs and table. To be honest to was probably the other tourists that were the most entertaining! English people calling the cockatiels 'pigeons', freaking out over the real snakes on the ground, generally being amazed at the free ranging animals just as we did the first day.

We decided to stay and have lunch. Justin had mentioned to Paige that they also have a joey being bottle fed and brought it out to show her when he saw us waiting for lunch. She was seriously impressed! Unfortunately he couldn't keep her out for long with a tourist bus full of people noticing the joey not long after Justin brought it out. They are very careful not to allow the animals to be stressed. They can not be faulted on their dedication.

After lunch we took a walk to look at the aviaries and went back to the van. While the girls watched a DVD and Joe practiced his chanter, I went for a walk with my camera through one of the rainforest walks here at the caravan park. It was beautiful! The rainforest is life on to of life. Everywhere you look is alive, the air is so fresh and it is completely peaceful. By the time I got back Joe had started packing up the non essentials outside and tidied up the car ready for another big driving day tomorrow.

After a bit more organising an some dinner we sat and watched Rio 2 and I'm hoping for an early night. We've had an amazing time up here! If you ever get the chance to see it don't pass it up and if you don't stay, make sure you at least visit Lync-Haven for a meal and a look at their growing rescue!

  • Driving to Bowen

    17 september 2017, Australië ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

We left Lync-Haven before 7am with the plan to drive as close to Airlie Beach as we could. The girls jumped straight in the car, PJ's and all and we set off. It was a surprisingly quick trip as we watched the landscape change from thick rainforest to beach and sugarcane fields and slowly return to the more bush like landscape were used to. We even started spotting more red dirt again.

Before we knew it, it was 10am and we decided to stop for fuel and breakfast in Innisfail. About an hour or so after getting back on the road we heard an assistance request over the radio and shortly after stopped to help a couple on the side of the road with a punctured tyre on their Harley. Joe sorted them out and we were on our way again.

We stopped just outside Townsville for fuel and some lunch. I called the Airlie Beach Big 4 we were booked into from tomorrow but unfortunately they were booked out and couldn't fit us in for the extra night so we headed to the Bowen Big 4 for the night and got in after 5pm. It's a nice little caravan park but is clearly designed for smaller vans. Could be interesting getting out in the morning! The girls went and had a look at the beach while we got sorted. We were too tired to want to organise dinner so we drove over to Bird's Fish and Chips and grabbed some takeaway. It really hit the spot!!

The girls have their blogs done and are currently enjoying the complementary internet available here until I need to upload what they've written. I spent hours in the car today uploading blogs and photos from the last week we've been without service. I'm not in a rush tonight! It was one of our biggest driving days of the trip today but tomorrow is a nice easy 1 hour drive to Airlie Beach and their super duper Big 4 with its own water park! Joe is very excited! He's completely exhausted from today.

** Nearly forgot to say we clicked over the 10,000km mark about 25km before we arrived in Bowen!

  • Airlie Beach

    18 september 2017, Australië ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

We left Bowen around 10am and went to see the Big Mango on the way. It was only an hour drive to get to Airlie Beach.

The caravan park has the most amazing water park! The girls ran from the van as soon as they were able to get changed and we didn't see them till Joe went to find them for lunch. We took the opportunity to get washing done and gave the van a good clean. After lunch the girls waited the bare minimum amount of time possible before heading back to the pools and Joe and I enjoyed some much deserved quiet time just vegging out at the van which was great and managed to feed some of the locals. Bringing a little quality bird seed is so much better than giving them bread and biscuits. Joe and I also worked out the last week of our trip and had a look at what there is to do in the area.

It's 5.30pm and the breeze is just starting to get a bit cool. We're doing BBQ for dinner and planning a chilled out evening.

It's been a very quiet day today.

We woke up and headed to the pool for the pancake breakfast. As we finished eating it started to rain and that was pretty much the way it was all day. Of course it didn't stop the girls from going to the pool however we decided to put off our look around Airlie till tomorrow and just enjoyed a quiet day at the van. Joe managed to wash the car and we did the caravan park's word jumble when we made the girls take a break from the pool for lunch.Meer informatie

  • Looking around Airlie Beach

    20 september 2017, Australië ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

We woke up to a beautifully sunny morning. The girls went to the petting zoo feeding at 10am and were able to bottle feed a lamb and calf. They weren't as interested in the ducks and chickens. Then we went to have a look around.

We drove into Airlie and parked near the Lagoon and walked along the Bicentennial walk along the beach with a view of the stunning Whitsunday blue water and the many yachts mored off shore and then through the Main Street. We had a look in a souvenir shop and bought some dresses and pins then stopped for lunch at the Sidewalk Cafe which was really good!

We went back down to the Lagoon and sat in a little patch of shade we found while the girls went for a swim. We later found out that the Lagoon was only reopened three weeks ago after the damage from cyclone Debbie forced its closure. You can still see from the state of the trees and the amount of construction fencing throughout the area. I can only imagine what it looked like six months ago.

We dropped into Best and Less to grab a new sun shirt and swimmers for Lara so obviously that meant they both needed t'shirts, shorts and a dress as well. We ducked into Woolworths to grab a couple of things and headed back to the van.

The girls headed to the pool one last time and Joe and I sat and chilled out for a little while, trying not to think too much about packing up for the driving day tomorrow. We had quick and easy hotdogs for dinner before the kids headed to the free outdoor movie and we started packing up. Looking forward to an early night!

  • Driving to Boyne River Rest Stop

    21 september 2017, Australië ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

Not too much to say but another big driving day. We headed out of Airlie Beach just after 9am and managed 5 hours driving with only one quick toilet stop before we took a half an hour break for lunch. The girls were good and pretty much just watched DVD's and did some school work.

We drove through a lot more cane field areas which gave way to cattle paddocks and fewer palm trees. We crossed the Tropic of Capricorn for the second time this trip as we passed through Rockhampton. Unfortunately I wasn't quick enough grab a photo but the crossing is much more impressive than the little sign outside Alice Springs!

After being slowed down by a lot of roadworks, we got to the rest stop around 5pm. Lara was very excited when she saw a sign in the bathroom saying the coffee truck that will be here in the morning will also have doughnuts! Hmmmm We'll have dinner then an evening of games and an early night before what will hopefully be the last of our really big driving days for the trip.

  • Driving to Caloundra

    22 september 2017, Australië ⋅ 🌧 20 °C

We were ready to leave at 8am; just in time for for the coffee van to have their doughnuts ready much to Lara's delight! After the girls ate their doughnuts and we had a chat to a long term travelling couple parked next to us we were off to the Bundaberg Rum Distillery two hours down the road. It was an easy drive with a lot more red dirt on in the landscape then we were expecting.

We had a good look around (it's a shame we don't drink rum) and picked up a couple of orders from home and continued towards Caloundra. This is the part of the trip Paige has been very excited about! She has wanted to come back to the Sunshine Coast since our last trip two years ago. We stopped at a garage at Maryborough for fuel, tyre check and some lunch and arrived and my Aunt and Uncles house around 3.30pm.

After a lovely greeting from my cousin and getting one neighbour to move their car we managed to squeeze the van into the driveway in one go, right before the rain set in for the night. Doug was seriously impressed! While we were setting up Doug made us both a much appreciated cuppa!

Quick and easy toasted sandwiches for dinner as Doug went to work and an evening of board games to the sound of rain on the caravan roof. Not a bad way to end the day at all!

  • Caloundra

    23 september 2017, Australië ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

Again not to much to write about. We spent the morning working on the van and car. Joe did an oil change on the car and I cleaned up the van and got the washing through. We also spent some time look at Aviaries in the area to visit and found a great one to visit tomorrow.

After lunch we went for a drive around the beaches. The wind had picked up so we decided against hopping out. We dropped into a chemist and got me something a little stronger for my Midge bites. It turns out they had a bit of a buffet out of me at Airlie, and I don't react well. Then we grabbed some groceries (quite a bit more than was on the list) and headed back. Joey cooked BBQ and we watched a movie with the girls whom I am about to chase into bed!

  • Caloundra to Rosewood

    24 september 2017, Australië ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

After a quiet morning we took a drive into town to look for some Caloundra pins to add to the girls collection. As we arrived in the Main Street we found a market in full swing. We spent a good couple of hours walking around, looking at the stalls and shops. We found some pins for the girls and bought half a kilo of blueberries for $8 and enjoyed some really good Sushi for lunch before heading back to the van.

We all shared a quick fruit salad, gathered up a few things and set off just after 1pm on the two hour trip to a bird aviary I'd tracked down that specialises in Black Cockatoos, something we have spent a lot of time looking into in recent months. We had planned on visiting a large public aviary in Maleny Botanical Gardens but decided we would get a lot more out of the Rosewood Parrot Gardens (not a public aviary but a private collection).

What an afternoon! Barry and his wife Julie took us around the majority of their 250+ aviaries and 650+ birds. Such an amazing set up with all the subspecies of black Cockatoos we have. Nearly double the number I had learned there was. We were amazed and learned so much! After looking around the aviaries we were invited to look in their baby room. Such a professional set up with so many babies either in incubators or in cages waiting for their next feed. All in perfect health and so affectionate, and sooo loud! It was such an educational experience that we all really enjoyed including the girls. We bought a copy of Julie's Black Cockatoo book and headed back towards Caloundra, 3 hours after arriving, and we could've easily spent twice as long.

We found a Coffee Club open for dinner about half way home and got back to the van before 9pm. Got the girls into bed and had a quick look through Julie's book before we crashed too!

  • Caloundra Day Three

    25 september 2017, Australië ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

After a morning catching up with my cousins and the girls riding around on their ripsticks and scooter we had lunch and decided to attempt the beach despite the wind.

We drove down to Shelly Beach and wandered down over the rocks but the wind really was to strong to enjoy it down there so we decided to head out to Strawberry Fields and let the girls pick their own strawberries. Getting out of the car there was the most delicious sweetness in the air. We went in and got containers and headed to the open picking field and let the girls at it. They had fun apart from being a little competitive about the size of their strawberries and Paige had to understand that she could only pick the ripe ones.

The only cost is the strawberries picked at $11 per kilo. We ended up with $14 of strawberries which I thought was pretty good. Then headed back into Caloundra to grab some extra meat for dinner before heading back to the van.

We had cheese and biscuits with my cousins before Joe cooked us all a very nice BBQ and a couple of drinks with strawberries and chocolate for dessert! We love it up here. It's so easy to just sit back and relax. And I've loved catching up with my family.

Driving again tomorrow. Not too many driving days to go and we'll be home but first Byron Bay!

  • Driving to Byron Bay

    26 september 2017, Australië ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

We said our goodbyes to my cousin and headed off around 9.30am. Nothing much to say but your average freeway drive although there are an awful lot of roadworks happening behind the Gold Coast. The kids were very excited to see Dreamworld, Movie World and Wet 'n' Wild as we went past. We will have to bite the bullet and take them one day.

After about 2 hours we crossed the border into NSW and we all started talking about home but we were still looking forward to Byron Bay.

In three hours we were there. It really wasn't much of a driving day. We were on site and set up by 1pm. The girls couldn't move fast enough to get in the van, in their swimmers and in the water park! And it was apparently pretty cold but they were in there for an hour. We had lunch and the girls worked on their blogs and just chilled out for a while before hopping in the car and going in search of pins!

Byron Bay is beautiful! The main town area has a real market feel to it. The girls instantly went about playing spot the Hippy then moved onto trying to work out exactly what a Hippy is. We found the Information centre and got the girls pins then went for a wander around a few of the shops. So much to look at here! We grabbed what was hopefully the last grocery run for the trip and made our way back to the van for dinner.

The girls have finished their blogs and are watching a movie while Joe and I relax outside. It's the coolest evening we've seen in a while so I suspect will be in with the girls before too long.

  • Byron Bay

    27 september 2017, Australië ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Joey's famous pancake breakfast was the order of the day this morning along with some lazing around while we waited for it to warm up a little. We headed into town around 11.30am to go to the most easterly point of Australia.

Byron is beautiful but the holiday traffic is unbelievable! I'd love to come back when it isn't school holidays to have a good look around. What should've been a 6 - 7 minute drive to the lighthouse took about half an hour and it was a miracle we managed to get a park for $8. There doesn't appear to be any free parking other than Woolworths in Byron Bay which we did not expect.

We weren't out of the car two minutes when we spotted 3 whales very close to the shore. We watched them for about 10 minutes before walking up to the lighthouse then towards the most eastern point. There were a lot of people. We had to wait to take photos at the point along with many others but the view was breathtaking. We made our was back to the cafe but decided against it for lunch and continued back into town. We drove to the main beach hoping for a park (which there wasn't) but managed to pull up long enough to grab some photos of a whale playing off shore with its fluke in the air.

Eventually we found a park close to where we were yesterday (1 hour only, $4) and we had a look in a few shops then decided to head back to the van for lunch. The girls went for one last swim and play in the water park while Joe and I relaxed and looked at the map to head home. As the afternoon cooled off I got the girls out of the pool and they pointed out a huge lizard by the water.

We decided to do takeaway for dinner and headed into town. Joe decided on Indian, which was a hell of a lot hotter than the 'mild' he was expecting while the girls and I got sushi. We went into an amazing crystal shop called Soul Life while we waited. The girls got a couple of little things before we headed back to the van to eat.

Byron has been beautiful and I really hope we come back one day when it's not school holidays.

  • Driving to Talawahl Creek Rest Area

    28 september 2017, Australië ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

We packed up and headed off towards home, no planned overnight stop point. Just playing it by ear.

We left Byron Bay a little after 9.30am and headed towards our only planned stop a pre organised look at another bird aviary that has a lot to do with Black Cockatoos. Casuarina Parrot Gardens is 20 minutes west of Grafton. We stopped for a bite of lunch in the way.

When we arrived we were able to wander around and take a good look at the avian themselves. The property in sloped and the aviaries are built to suit which is what we have been looking at ideas of how to do successfully. Noddy and her late husband Neville built a beautiful collection of Black Cockatoos, Macaws and Amazons among other birds (and dogs). We spent about an hour and a half looking and talking to Noddy and getting some great ideas!

We hit the road, very tempted to push through to get home but decided to stop before dinner. As we went through Coffs Harbour the girls were very excited to see the Big Banana but there was nowhere for south bound traffic to stop so we kept going.

We decided to stop at the Talawahl Creek Rest Area just south of Taree. We arrived at 6pm and jumped in the van, quick showers and chicken wraps for dinner followed by Legend of the Gardians (DVD) and Brave (DVD) then hopefully a good night sleep!

We're all looking forward to getting home in the morning! Should be about a 2 1/2 hour drive!!

  • Home!

    29 september 2017, Australië ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

After a restless night with a refrigerator truck parking close by for the night, we were up at 7.45am and on the road by 8.30am. With a stop for fuel and a quick stop at the workshop on the way, we were home in around three hours. The girls were very excited when they realised we were in Hexham and over the moon when they saw the Singleton sign.

After spending a few minutes with the animals we got the car and van unpacked and started washing. The house was spotless and everything was taken care of by Joe's niece who house sat for us and looked after all our animals while we were away.

Over the next couple of weeks I hope to put all my numbers together but at the moment we have travelled 12,604km over 50 days and I've taken about 5500 photos!

It has been the most amazing, incredible journey to places I only ever dreamed I would see and experience. Our little girls have learned and seen so much and Joe has loved all but the really long driving days. It has been an experience we will remember always. And one that has inspired many trips to come. But for now we're all really glad to be back. There really is no place like home.

(Photos are of our spot for our last night and our bags of dirt/sand from every place we've stayed throughout our First Australian Adventure)
