      Playa Blanca

      Heute morgen haben wir uns beim Frühstück dazu entschieden, dass wir auf eine der Inseln bzw an den Strand wollen. Eine Mädel aus Amsterdam schließt sich uns noch an.
      Also ganz entspannt Sachen gepackt und ab geht's an den Steg. Auf dem Weg spricht uns ne Typ an und meint das er uns fahren kann. Oke, also drauf aufs Boot und los geht's. Erst mal auf die andere Seite der Bucht um das Gas nach zu füllen. Dann fährt er uns zu verschieden Buchten Playa Puerto Frances war meiner Meinung nach die schönste. Aber weiter geht's durch Mangrovenwälder zu Playa de la padre und landen tuen wir dann bei Playa Blanca.
      Auch hier ists sehr schön nur mit tuts im Herzen weh die Hunde hier zu sehen. Viele sind abgemagert oder haben Verletzungen 😞
      Wir kuscheln mit ein paar und lassen uns sonst die Sonne auf den Bauch scheinen. Ein sehr ensoannter Tag mit viel gelache und schönen Gesprächen. Da wir drei anscheinend alle ein bisschen Lust auf Abenteuer haben kommen wir mit der Idee um die Ecke die nächste Nacht hier an einem der Strände zu verbringen.
      Kurz vor Sonnenuntergang erreichen wir wieder Portobelo.
      Wir kochen zusammen, alles irgendwie zusammen gewürfelt aber sehr lecker und sehr viel - aber soll ja schließlich auch für morgen reichen🙈
      Freu mich aufjedenfall sehr auf den Camping Ausflug.      Lue lisää

      Colon Port Walkabout and Workday

      Didn’t go far today. Put in a full day of work on the ship. As advertised, the area in the immediate (walking distance) vicinity of this Colon cruise port is not all that easy or worthwhile to explore by foot. It’s mixed industrial/commercial/residential. A real mix of rundown infrastructure and some very modern good-looking construction underway. However, I did briskly walk around some for about 30 minutes or so. Not accosted by vendors, though there were some, but oh MY the taxi drivers are “friendly”. Dozens of them just lying in wait for non-excursion passengers like me. I figured out that by saying I had to work on the ship (true) that they quickly left me alone, maybe thinking I was crew, but I must have been solicited over a dozen times in different locations while out walking - all of them either offering to take me wherever I wanted to go or to show me a fantastic personal tour.

      Shut down on the laptop with my neck screaming at me for using such bad ergonomics for so long. Headed to the adult pool area (Solarium) to stand under a hydrotherapy pipe. Though, “adult pool” is funny on this cruise as the informal report is there are only 6 children on board, one of which is only 9 months. So kids are pretty thin on the deck; pretty thin in the air; generally just a bit trim…🥸      Lue lisää

      Offshore Overnight Cruising

      When we pulled out of the Colon port we were literally within a few miles of the entrance to the first locks. So we apparently will be doing circles offshore all night long.

      I thought I might hit the casino again as I haven’t been back in the last 3 days and I know they were missing getting an additional portion of the kids’ remaining inheritance. However, we left the port nearly an hour late and we are apparently not out far enough to open the casino. So I caught the late Neal a Diamond tribute show after a pasta dinner at the Italian restaurant. Just chillin for now in case the casino opens soon. It’s been a long day and I’m starting to feel it.

      Also, it’s an early start for the Canal tomorrow! Otherwise not much else to report.      Lue lisää

      Panama Canal - Gatun Locks

      The Gatun Locks is the first set of locks we pass through going from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

      The canal traverses NW to SE in the direction we’re going. Reportedly, the Panama isthmus is the only place in the world where you’ll see the sun rise over the Pacific Ocean and set in the Atlantic - at least from a cruise ship.

      I attached a few pics and videos from Gatun Locks to this footprint. Really cool to see the locks in action!

      We are now sailing across Gatun Lake, then the Calebra Cut, then finally to the Miraflores Locks, the “old” canal. The final locks will be later today.      Lue lisää

      Panama Anreise

      Nächstes Ziel: Panama
      Angeflogen haben wir Panama City, wo wir in der nähe des Flughafens übernachtet haben. Am nächsten Tag ging es direkt zum Bus Terminal, weiter zu unserem eigentlichen Ziel: Portobelo.
      Angefahren wird der Ort wird von extrem vollen Schulbussen, die sehr unregelmäßig kommen. Die Busse werden hier von Privatleuten betrieben und es herrscht starke Konkurrenz (wer als erster fährt bekommt das meiste Geld). Daher ist der Fahrstil abartig.
      Portobelo ist ein kleiner Ort auf der Seite des karibischen Meers. Bedeutend war Portobelo v.a zur spanischen Kolonialzeit. Damals gab es hier einen großen Hafen der sehr bedeutsam für den Handel war. 5000 Menschen leben hier und auch wenn Portobelo sehr beliebtes Ziel von Touristen ist, wirkt es überhaupt nicht überlaufen. Am Wochenende ist hier viel los aber eher an den Stränden.
      So was machen wir hier? Wir haben geplant bis Juni zu bleiben und sind hier über Worldpackers gelandet eine Seite wo verschiedene Projekte angeboten werden die man unterstützen kann. Dafür erhält man unterschiedliche Vorteile wie kostenloses Essen, wohnen etc.
      Wir sind bei Francescos Projekt gelandet, der ein kleines italienisches Restaurant (Casa vela) führt und Touren anbietet. Es liegt direkt am Hafen und man hat einen atemberaubenden Blick auf die Bucht. Daher sind die meisten Gäste auch Segler. Wir arbeiten 5h am Tag und unsere Aufgaben sind: Sauber machen, Essen mit zubereiten und Gäste bewirten. Da nun die Hauptseason vorbei ist, ist nicht mehr ganz so viel los und Touren nur so einmal die Woche. Für unsere Arbeit stellt uns Francesco ein kleines Häuschen in dem wir mit Olivia (einer anderen Volunteer) leben. Er zahlt das Abendessen und nimmt uns auch ab und zu zu den Touren mit. Auch die Kajaks und Schnorchel können wir nutzen. Trinkgeld wird mehr als fair aufgeteilt. Francesco ist wirklich ein Bilderbuchitaliener, der 4 verschiedene Sprachen fließend beherrscht. Alle im Ort kennen und mögen ihn. Diese Art des Reisens gefällt uns jetzt schon viel besser, da wir hier die Chance haben sehr interessante, inspirierende Menschen kennenzulernen. außerdem taucht man so besser in das richtige Leben hier ein, lernt die Einheimischen besser kennen und hat Zugang zu unbekannteren wunderschönen Orten, die wir sonst wahrscheinlich niemals gesehen hätten.       Unser Häuschen

      Hier ein kleiner Einblick in unsere Wohnsituation.
      Das kleine Haus wird von Francesco gemietet. Es liegt in Buenaventura ca. 20 min mit dem Fahrrad von Casa vela (dem Restaurant) entfernt. Man kann es mit den halb auseinanderfallenden Schulbussen, Taxis, oder wie wir hauptsächlich tun, mit dem Fahrrad erreichen.
      Wir leben hier wie die Einheimischen, sehr spartanisch. Die Dusche ist kalt. Es gibt keine Fenster, weshalb man mit Insekten, Fledermäusen, Eidechsen und Krabben leben muss. Erstaunlich wie schnell man sich daran gewöhnen kann. Habe schon gesagt WG leben wird zukünftig ein zuckerschlecken. Neulich saß ich auf der Toilette und aus dem Duschabfluss kamen langsam die Beine einer großen Krabbe raus. Wie ein Horrorfilm😂. Dafür ist die Umgebung super schön! Neben dem Haus fließt ein kleiner Fluss und wenn man unter der Brücke durchgeht kommt man zu einem Strand, wo sich der Sonnenuntergang super beobachten lässt. Mit der Müllentsorgung haben sie es hier trotzdem nicht so, aber es kommt zum Glück einmal die Woche ein Gärtner der aufräumt. Wir haben auch 2 Wachhunde namens Flash und blanca. Die beiden passen auf uns auf und dafür gibts Futter.      Lue lisää

      Day 7: Hello from Colon Panama

      We arrived at Colon, Panama this morning. We had breakfast onboard at Mamsen’s, then disembarked for our 9:30 excursion through the old Panama City. We hoped on a bus for an hour. That’s how long it takes to get from the Atlantic Ocean side in Panama to the Pacific Ocean side, overland.

      Panama is a much more prosperous country than Columbia was. In Columbia there was trash, and piles of it, littering every single road. There was very little of that in Panama. Another difference is that in Columbia, almost everyone got around on scooters. I saw a family of 4 on a scooter. The small child stood in front of the father, who was driving. The mother sitting behind the man was holding a baby. In Panama, I saw few motorcycles/scooters. The better paved roads had many cars. I saw Toyota, Mazda, Kia and a few Chevys. All in reasonably good shape.

      Our guide, Maria explained that Panama makes money by moving goods, whether that would be overland, via train or over water via the Panama Canal. She also explained how there were/are 3 Panama Cities. The original city was burned to the ground by Invaders. Then it was rebuilt. That is the Old Panama City. Now a new, more modern Panama City is being constructed as an extension to the Old City. We toured the Old City which has old architecture and narrow cobblestone streets.

      Driving is not for the faint of heart and I am not sure that being a passenger is either. Drivers more or less rely on the courtesy of other drivers. I saw cars driving straight past stop signs. Our guide explained that what is commonly called the Panama Hat is not. Teddy Roosevelt may have gotten his from someone in Panama but it was actually made in Ecuador. I did buy a ‘REAL’ Panama Hat. It is adorable and I will post a photo of me wearing it.

      Our tour was cut short by a downpour after we had toured a church. We waited until it slowed down and made our way back to the center of town where we boarded our bus to return to the Atlantic Ocean side of Panama to board The Viking Neptune.

      Day 8: Lunch on the Panama Canal

      So, what is lunch like on a cruise ship while traveling through the Panama Canal?

      We arrived at “The Restaurant”. Which is its actual name on deck 2 a bit early. Which gave use time to do 4 laps around deck 2 for a total of 1 mile.

      They paired my Rueben sandwich with a Bottega - Pinot Grigio Venezia which was lovely, Donna had a nice burger (no bun or cheese) - Paul had Salad and Donna had the Lentil soup - the Mixed Berry Sorbet was a refreshing wash of elegance across our palette and the Blueberry Mouse Cake was so light I am positive it doesn’t have any calories.

      We met Mike & Carol, as well as, Madeline & Jay at the tables next to us. Which honestly is a huge part of the cruise experience - it isn’t just about the amazing places we visit - it is about the amazing people we are meeting.

      There is a pool my old boss/manager is running - the stakes are pretty high $$$$$$$$$ How much weight will Paul gain (I started out at 252 pounds when I boarded the ship) by the time he arrives in England on May 10th.

      So, in my on defense of gaining too much weight Donna and I are trying to take the stairs as often as we can. You can see some pics at deck 1 and then the stairs and finally making it up to our floor on deck 8.

      The scenery was lovely as we passed through the canal. An interesting factoid is they keep the land well groomed almost like a putting green to help keep the mosquitos away along the canal.

      There is an old and new canal our ship the Viking Neptune is 105 feet wide we squeezed into the old canal at 107 feet wide. When the canal was built the width was determined by the width of the largest warship in the USA.

      As a child in 7th or 8th grade we all took history & geography class and learned about the Panama Canal — but it as so far away — but to cruise smoothly through it - and kiss my lovely wife Donna along the canal route is beyond my imagination.

      We are now approaching the looks on the other side of the lake - it is raining now - the ship is parked.as we go in and out of each lock the process of the water going up and down is beyond belief.

      Colon Tour continued

      Clayton (now - City of Knowledge) formerly biggest US military base in the area. Albrook, a US military base in the past, and the airport is still in use. Panama Port company (look up YouTube crocks and locks) 1903-1999 Gorges Hospital in now an exclusive for cancer patients. Panama convention center holds 8,000 people. Covid is still around but much better now. Crime delinquency, and safety and much improved after the evil dictator. Bush 1989 sent 30,000 military to clean up Panama. Causeway connects 3 islands ( with fill from the canal) from the Panama Canal to the mainland and it acts as a beautiful, water break and a recreational area for locals and tourists. Oct 13,1962 there was a ferry then a bridge was built. Biodiversity museum, architecture… are tourist highlights and old town and down town… because of the phenomena of the tides, they dredge the canal and do daily maintenance, During the Pandemic a tanker ship didn’t get the anchor out soon enough, and hit the train bridge doing significant damage. It was a Panamanian pilot. Lots of roundabouts are efficiently employed to control traffic. We saw lots of churches, St. Joseph Church, etc. The Panama Isthmus, at 4:30 PM, lecture about the Panama Canal history was very informative.       Panamakanal 🇵🇦

      Die Durchfahrt durch den 80 Kilometer langen Panamakanal schaffen die Schiffe - und auch die Sea Cloud Spirit - in ca. 8 Stunden und passieren dabei 3 Schleusen.
      Bis zu seiner Fertigstellung im Jahr 1914 mussten die Schiffe um Kap Horn oder die Magellanstraße fahren, was mehrere Wochen dauerte. (Aber eigentlich keine so schlechte Vorstellung, eine so lange Auszeit zu nehmen).
      Im Durchschnitt zahlt jedes des jährlich 15.000 Schiffe für die Nutzung des Panamakanals 50.000 USD.      Lue lisää
