      [JJ] After getting off the bus in Zakopane, this evening has consisted of dinner in McDonald's, fighting self service checkouts in Lidl, and missing the bus stop to our hostel because we were having too much fun reminiscing about notable players who've played in the Indian football superleague, causing us to then have to walk through the damp dark Polish woods. We are well and truly amongst some beautiful mountains here, and although I haven't taken any pictures of them yet, we're thoroughly excited to get hiking tomorrow from our hostel: Goodbye Lenin Hostel, where a cat refuses to get off of my bed.Leer más

      Kasprowy Wierch

      [JJ] After we descended from Karb, we saw a very pretty and inviting stream which led to the following interaction:

      JJ: *starts drinking from stream*
      Thomas: *looks over at plant further upstream and brushes against it* wow this plant is the most deadly in the UK!
      JJ: *spits out water*
      Thomas: wow apparently death from this plant is instantaneous
      Thomas: *then starts drinking from stream*?!!?

      So in spite of fearing we might have just poisoned ourselves (and in Thomas' case intentionally so?), we decided to trek up the exposed section to Swinicka Przelecz, where there were at least some incredible views to see while potentially dying. In particular, a vast valley unfolded beneath us from the top and looked out over the Slovakian border for the first time. Along the following ridge walk, a torrent of rain came hurtling from the sky as the forecast had been predicting all day. But disaster strikes at this very moment as Thomas discovers that he somehow left his coat at the hostel(!). So in the teeming rain we managed to rush to Kasprowy Wierch mountain and hide in the cable car station, where Thomas dried out a little and gorged on chips a lot before deciding the most sensible action was to take the cable car all the way down to Kuznice.       Wanderung auf den Gubalowka

      Heute morgen ging es nach Zakopane. Zakopane ist ein im südlichen Polen gelegener Ferienort am Fuße des Tatra-Gebirges. Der Ort ist ein beliebter Ausgangspunkt für Wintersport und lockt im Sommer Bergsteiger und Wanderer an. Die nahegelegenen Skigebiete Kasprowy Wierch und Gubałówka sind per Seilbahn bzw. Standseilbahn erreichbar und bieten Panoramablick auf die Berge.

      Sportlich wie wir sind, ging es dann zu Fuß auf den 1.120 Meter hohen Gubalowka, oben angekommen gab es einen Virtual mit Panorama und eine kleine Stärkung. Hier oben ist natürlich, typisch für Polen, mal wieder Rummel, mit allem was dazu gehört. Aber etwas abseits haben wir eine nette Terrasse gefunden.

      Als wir wieder zurück waren, sind wir noch durch den Ort geschlendert, aber nach dem Rummel oben hatten wir eigentlich genug davon und hier gibt es reichlich. Nach kurzer Planung ging es weiter....      Leer más

      Zakopane: The Polish Tatras

      📌 A flixbus onto the other side of the Tatras toom us to the busy side, and it was obvious. Zakopane was a developed, busy, small city. It was similar to Queenstown, which was very different in comparison to the rugged, quiet and less developed Slovakian side.

      📌 Again the weather was looking up and down but it looked like the full day we had of hiking would be sunny in the morning. We planned an early wake up and without really knowing how to get a bus to the famous Morskie Oko lake (start of the hikes) we decided we would go for it. A nice large polish carb filled meal of sauerkraut, schnitzel was also preparation ☺️

      📌 We started the day early and knew where the buses were but times were hard to grasp, as we headed down the main street a bus driver yelled out Morskie Oko and signalled to get on. As we drove around town, this appeared to be how they got people on their buses and it also indicated that the business around Morskie Oko was true.

      📌 We started our hike and we were glad we were glad we headed to the 5 lakes trail first as this meant splitting off from 100s of people heading to Morskie Oko, even at 7.30am. The hike was tough but it was amazing, we ascended around 1100m through beautiful valleys and eventually made it to the lakes which were incredible. The surrounding mountains were still patchy with snow and it was fabulous to take it all in. We thought we had reached the high of the hike but then we found out as we ascended over a ridge to make it down to Morskie Oko that the views got even better. We had a panoramic view of the lakes and the weather was fantastic. There were a few sketchy areas as part of the track was covered by snow and a slip would have been an unknown fate, plus the knees on the descent got a great workout, but it was all worth the incredible hike. We finished in Morskie Oko as the rain came in, the lake was packed with people and it was lovely but we definitely made the right call going up first. I'll

      📌 We ended up walking approx 24km and enjoyed some beers, delicious polish cuisine of pork and schnitzel and some apple pie as a treat after a tough day. The Tatras were incredible and we had gotten very lucky with the weather.      Leer más

      Czarny Staw Gasienicowy

      [JJ] The first part of today's hike was astoundingly straightforward (at least compared to the second part, see next). We motored up to this very pretty lake, almost a warm up for the real delight at Rysy tomorrow. We also climbed up over Maly Koscielec before we deviating from our planned route for some gnarlier looking paths.Leer más

      Nicht aus Zucker...

      Glücklicherweise haben wir das schöne Wetter vom Wochenende gut ausgenutzt, denn ab heute soll es kühler und regnerischer werden. Wir starten vormittags unter einem bewölkten Himmel und haben auch schon einen Plan: uns dem Giewont von der anderen Seite nähern. Der 1895 m hohe Pilgerberg der Polen thront wie ein schlafender Ritter über Zakopane. Gestern hatten wir von der östlichen Seite einen super Blick auf den schroffen Gipfel und haben nicht wenige gut ausgerüstete Gipfelstürmer*innen gesehen, die genau dorthin unterwegs waren. Heute sind wir von Zakopane aus nördlicher Richtung gekommen und (nach erneutem kostenpflichtigen Eintritt in den Nationalpark) schön entlang eines Bergbachs bergauf gegangen. Gerade zur Vesperzeit setzte ein leichter Nieselregen ein, der uns aber nicht aufhalten konnte und wir setzten unseren Weg bis zum Wasserfall Wodospad Siklawica fort... Wir sind ja schließlich nicht aus Zucker!;) Zurück in Zakopane beschließen wir, noch ein bisschen das Örtchen zu erkunden, wovon wir ja noch nicht viel gesehen hatten. Tatsächlich ist es so touristisch wie erwartet und zwischen Cafés, Restaurants und Postkarten finden wir immer wieder kleine Stände, die den typischen Oscypek Käse verkaufen. Da wir uns aber eher nach einem koffeinhaltigen Heißgetränk mit etwas Süßem sehnen (mangels Backofen kann ich leider nicht selber backen... :/), suchen wir dann ein süßes Café auf. Das leckere Tartelettechen verputzen wir zu zweit und gehen von dort aus gestärkt die restlichen 1,5 km im Regen zu unserem Apartment...

      No Cheese for Me in Zakopane

      I was surprised to find that my leg muscles were only slightly sore this morning. Nevertheless, I had development a severe case of chafing, so another hike definitely was out of the question.

      Instead, I hung out at the hostel finishing up work before checking out and heading down the hill to Zakopane.

      There was a museum where you could see how the local smoked cheese was made and even make some yourself. However, when I got there I was turned down as they no longer offered demonstrations in any foreign language. When I said I didn't mind, that I'd be content with just seeing the process, they told me that most of the demo was theory, so I'd probably be bored out of my mind if I couldn't follow in Polish.

      I thanked them for their honesty and tried to figure out what else I could do that wouldn't take me too far from the bus stop and didn't involve a full day tour. But I didn't find anything that really spiked my interest. I also wasn't very keen on going to the crowded center with my backpack again to get some local cheese. So instead, I found myself a nice park with a fabulous view of the mountains.      Leer más

      Zakopane - Tatra Nationalpark

      „Alert RCB: Warning! Storms and strong winds expected today (13.06). Risk of power outages. During the storm, seek shelter.“

      Oh nein! Eine Unwetterwarnung genau für den Tag wo wir in den Bereich der Hohen Tatra wollten, um hier ein paar schöne Tage in den Bergen zu verbringen.
      Egal! :) uns kann nichts aufhalten. Mit unserem kleinen Pumpkin ging es in Richtung Zakopane, welche als topp Startpunkt für Wanderungen gilt.

      Bei unserer Ankunft regnete es Hunde und Katzen wie man so schon sagt. 😝

      Nachdem wir den ersten Campingplatz doch nicht nutzen wollten, da wir Zweifel hatten, nach dem was an Wassermengen noch kommen soll, hier vom (Rasen)Platz ohne Aufwand wieder los zu kommen, entschieden wir uns zurück zu fahren. Deswegen ging es wieder in Richtung Innenstadt wo wir noch zwei weitere Plätze anfuhren und beim letzten unterkamen.

      Ein kurzer Quartiersspaziergang lag vor der nächsten Regenfront grad noch drin… zum Glück auch die Chance ein paar Fotos von dem herzigen Baustil der „Chalets“ hier zu schiessen…!      Leer más

      Noch mehr Berge und weniger Schnee

      Heute ging es für uns zwei nochmal in die Berge. Nachdem wir gestern ja schön ausloten konnten, ab welcher Höhe wir mit Schnee zu rechnen haben, sind wir heute erst auf den "Nosal" (1206 m) und danach zur ehemaligen Alm "Kalatówki" (1195 m) gewandert, wo sich heute ein Hotel befindet. Der Nosal ist ein superschön schroffer Kalkgipfel, auf den man über einen sehr steilen Wanderweg steigen kann. Eine kleine Überraschung gab es unten für uns. Nachdem wir gestern zusammen bereits 10 Zloty für den Nationalpark um den Moskio Oko bezahlt hatten wurde auch heute wieder 9 Zloty für den Nationalpark verlangt (umgerechnet ca. 2 Euro ;-) ). Was auf den ersten Blick jeden Alpen- oder Schwarzwald-gewöhnten Wanderer wundern dürfte, macht hier Sinn. Man zahlt keine Kurtaxe und es scheint als würden die Einnahmen aus diesen Eintrittsgeldern für die Erhaltung des Nationalparks verwendet. So saubere und gut gepflegte Wanderwege habe ich persönlich selten gesehen. Mal wieder staunen wir zwei nicht schlecht, wie viele Leute hier trotz Nebensaison unterwegs sind. Wie es aussieht ist hier Wandern, Skitouren gehen und jede andere Art Bergsport Volkssport. Der Weg hoch zum Nosal ist sehr steil aber komplett schneefrei und deshalb gut begehbar. Oben angekommen öffnet sich ein tolles Panorama mit Blick auf den "Giewont" und die Nachbargipfel. Auf dem Weg zum Kalatówki blühen überall, wo kein Schnee mehr liegt, die Krokusse und trotz vieler Leute ist das Panorama einfach unglaublich schön :-). (L)Leer más
