      The Wild Coast & KwaZulu-Natal

      I spent a few days watching the surfers in Jeffery's Bay before heading off to Coffee Bay on the Wild Coast. The Wild Coast is so called because of the wild coastlines which reminded me a little of home, helped by the fact that the weather was pretty rainy while I was there! Apparently Coffee Bay is named that because of a shipwreck that contained coffee beans leading to coffee trees growing along the coastline. I went for a long hike to see the "Hole in the Wall", but I mostly enjoyed seeing the cows chillin' on the beaches. This region used to be a part of Transkei, an area independent of the apartheid South African government populated by the Xhosa people. This results in a strong Xhosa culture that gives the area a much more "African" feel than a lot of the rest of South Africa, as I was once again seeing roundhavels, cattle on the roads, and I loved listening to the language as it's one of the "clicking" languages.
      Next I went to Durban for a few days, and any time I'm in a big city I take the opportunity to go to nice cafes & restaurants, get any provisions that I can't usually get (like books!), and go to the cinema (Avatar 2 - 3D). I also took in the waterfront, wandered areas that were safe (which were limited), and took a trusty bus tour to see the rest.
      Finally I went to St. Lucia, which along with Durban is in the KwaZulu-Natal province, a Zulu region. St. Lucia is famous for the iSimangaliso wetland park populated by loads of hippos and crocodiles, amongst other animals. This obviously makes it the perfect place to be on a boat trip when a really bad storm hits! You could see the storm approaching for about an hour before all hell broke loose, with epic thunder and lightning, hail (first time in over 10 years apparently), and wind strong enough to blow us 3km off course even against the engine. The captain had to drive us into the trees to stop us from being blown further away, and then drove us back as soon as the wind died down a little. I was convinced we were about to become hippo or croc food! I had a large glass of wine with dinner that night.      Read more

      Durban ( frühere Port Natal ) ist die drittgrößte Stadt Südafrikas. Mit den umliegenden Orten bildet sie die Metropolgemeinschaft eThekwini mit mehr als 3,4 Millionen Einwohnern. Mehr als 300 Sonnenstunden im Jahr und traumhaft Strände ist Durban ein beliebtes Urlaubszentrum. Hier lebte viele Jahre Mahatma Gandi der sich für die Gleichberechtigung der Inder in Südafrika einsetzte. Durban ist eine Industrie- und Hafenstadt mit den größten Hafen Afrikas.Read more

      Day 3 continued

      We stopped at a supermarket, they sign your receipt at till and you have to show it to leavevthe store at the door. We pulled into a second one and Chris knew a market stall holder selling cashew nuts, nearly all of us brought some he was so happy they are so tasty.

      The children's home taught 3 main things for the children to develop good self confidence, self esteem and dignity.

      The afternoon was very moving, we gave out some food parcels and saw two homes, one slept 12 children and another had many all looked after by a grand mother who had a baby strapped on her back. They were told today that they each be having a new home built for them in August. They were so incredibly humble and thank full and happy. They keep thier current homes incredibly tidy and clean. With the very little they have. They did a zulu dance in thanks and happiness.
      We gave the children sweets, little books, stickers and a football. Their dog loved the football and soon burst it. No one made a fuss, one child put the broken ball on his head like a hat, and they were all sharing their gifts.
      The homes they have now are made of mud and can wash away in heavy rain! This year has been wet.

      Hluhluwe (Durban)

      Safari, die zweite! Oma gönnte sich einen Erholungstag auf dem Schiff und ich setzte mich wieder in den Bus für die zweite Safari. Die Busfahrt dauerte 4 Stunden bis wir am Hluhluwe (Ausgesprochen:Schluschluwe) Park angekommen sind. Die Hinfahrt war super anstrengend, nicht aufgrund der Länge, sondern aufgrund der lokalen Reiseleitung, die 3 Stunden am Stück uninteressante Details von sich gab. Ne. Also wirklich, ne. Umso größer war die Freude, als ich dann endlich wieder im offenen Geländewagen saß, die Reiseleiterin zum Glück in einem anderen. Los geht’s! Der Hluhluwe Park ist einer der ältesten und beherbergt die Big 5 und natürlich noch viele andere Tiere. der Park ist riesig und wir konnten auf der 3-stündigen Fahrt auch nur einen Teil abfahren. Aber die Fahrt hat sich definitiv gelohnt! Es war dieses Mal wirklich wie eine Pirschfahrt, denn wir mussten die Tiere suchen bzw. unser Guide. Landschaftlich war der Nationalpark malerisch. Grün. Hügelig. Unberührte Natur. Die Straßen waren wesentlich angenehmer als gestern und die Geländewagen ein wenig komfortabler. Alle der Big 5 konnte ich leider nicht finden. Ich hätte mir so sehr einen Löwen gewünscht, aber der wollte offensichtlich nicht. Aber dafür habe ich unzählige Büffel, Zebras, Affen, Nyalas, Warzenschweine und Elefanten gesehen. Sogar Elefantenbabys. So süß. Aber dementsprechend waren die Elefanten-Mamis leicht aggressiv bzw. sehr beschützerisch unterwegs, sodass ich zwischenzeitlich echt Angst bekam. Aber alles gut, allen gehts blendend. Ein gelungener Tag! Ich könnte jeden Tag eine Safari machen. Es ist einfach so schön diese Tiere in der Natur zu beobachten.
      Die Rückfahrt war dann aber sehr erholsam, denn die Reiseleiterin hielt 4 Stunden lang ihre Klappe. Gott sei Dank.      Read more

      Take me back to the place ...

      Es hat zwar immer mal wieder ein wenig geregnet, aber wir haben uns hinaus gewagt, und zwar wieder an den Strand, genauer an den Addington Beach.

      Dort kann man sehr schön die Surfer 🏄 beobachten, die Wellen sind toll, und einen richtig guten Cappuccino gibt's auch.

      Schade, dass das Restaurant mit dem Aquarium noch geschlossen war, aber wir konnten von oben ins Becken gucken und haben die Haie sehen können.

      An dem Sammelplatz für den Shuttle-Bus sprach uns ein Mann an, wollte wissen, wo wir herkommen, wie lange wir bleiben, ob wir nun Weihnachten verpassen wegen der Kreuzfahrt usw., und immer schielte er auf den Schirm von Phoenix, den Klaus um hatte. “What a nice umbrella, looks strong, nice colour ... really nice umbrella ... how much did you pay, such a nice umbrella“. ☔🌂

      Klaus hat ihm den Schirm schließlich geschenkt. Unser neuer Freund wollte wissen, wie wir auf deutsch “Danke“ sagen und strahlte!

      Aus dem Bus heraus haben wir gesehen, wie Freunde von ihm zu ihm kamen, den Schirm bewunderten, man klatschte sich ab, tolles Geschenk, heftiges Winken bei unsrer Abfahrt .... 😍

      Heritage day

      C'est jour férié aujourd'hui: Heritage day. C'est un jour en l'honneur de toutes les traditions et de l'héritage des tribus.

      En se baladant sur la plage principale de Durban (pas la plus belle qu'on ait vue), on croise beaucoup beaucoup de sud africains parés de leur tenue traditionnelle, qui font la fête dans une ambiance super bon enfant 🤩 !

      On croise des policiers qui se mangent une glace en patrouillant ... d'autres qui nous demandent si on apprécie le spectacle ... Ils ont l'air proche de la population ici !

      Le soir au camping, on discute avec une famille d'Afrikaners qui sont comme nous en tour du monde ... Ou non, en fait ils sont en tour d'Afrique du Sud, voire même en tour des campings d'Afrique du Sud !
      Car les autres pays, ça leur fait peur ! Les autres leur font peur ! Les questions et les affirmations fusent quand on leur fait part de notre périple sur leur continent : "le reste de l'Afrique, c'est dangereux ! C'est pauvre! Y'a rien à manger en Tanzanie"...

      Notre point de vue est différent. C'est fou d'avoir une vision aussi négative et tranchée sur son propre pays !

      C'est une grosse partie de l'Héritage des Afrikaners (colons blancs Hollandais installés en AdS depuis plusieurs générations) !
