      Durban - Day 3

      December 1, 2015 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

We scheduled a half day tour to the Land of 1000 Hills where we were shown the traditional Zulu way of life, highlighted with music and dancing. Our guide, Dick Maare, was an energetic and proud South African Afrikaaner (white with Dutch ancestry) that was very knowledgable and enhanced the tour with his stories.

The Zulu people used to be separate tribes that would fight among themselves, but under the ruling of King Shaka, were brought together as one. The Zulu men are able to have as many wives as they would like, but at the price of 11 cows each. The Zulu women would collect water topless which caused the Zulu men to loiter and attempt to win the heart of a single lady (well, one single lady at a time).

We were told that there were huts for cooking, eating, and sleeping. Nico was brave and tried the Zulu beer.

The tour also included a walk through a reptile park which started with holding an alligator. Alligators aren't native to Africa but since their bigger relatives, crocodiles, are not so friendly, it was a good introduction. The most interesting thing we learned is that the gender could be controlled by the temperature the egg is kept at. If it's kept cooler than 28C, it will be a female. Between 28-31C, it will be male. When it is kept at 32C and above, it will be a female again.

We learned about tortoises and snakes, and held one to finish off the tour.

We had minimal time before we had to make our next sightseeing scheduled departure time at 1pm - the Durban Ricksha Sightseeing Bus. It was a 3 bus ride around Durban that took us to all the main sites. While we were downtown, we had a slight set back from a small fenderbender. The bus driver had to obtain the other driver's information and speak to the police, then we were on our way again. The bus took us atop a hill in Morningside that allowed a great view of Durban.

For dinner, we went to Roma Revolving, "1 of 31 revolving restaurants world wide" - this statement was most likely outdated because a quick google search found more than 31 in the US alone. Nico put his engineering degree to good use to calculate the time it took to rotate 360 degrees by the number of windows and amount of time a landmark took to pass out of sight.

      Durban - Day 2

      November 30, 2015 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

After having to wake up early for game drives and diving on the previous days, we were finally able to sleep in! After the buffet breakfast, we took a tour of Moses Mahbida Stadium. In the afternoon, we enjoyed a bottle of South African sparkling wine and "bunny chow" from the hotel balcony before getting a massage - due to the favorable exchange rate, we opted for 90 minutes.

For dinner, we went to the popular vacation spot Uhmalanga Rocks just North of Durban. We had a reservation at the Oyster Box Hotel, a British establishment from the Colonial era. We were joined by Andrea, Brittany's South African friend with whom she worked at Lake Powell, and her husband and child.

      Durban impressions

December 19, 2019 in South Africa

Wandering around Durban's beach promenade, we notice a lot of run-down ex-surfer boys asking for money. The shopping malls seem to be overcrowded with local people, which for us Europeans is a bit overwhelming on our first days on the African continent 😅. But the following day we already jump into the local culture on Victoria Market. Our evenings fade out with red wine in our cosy cottage where we recover from the coastal thick and humid air. At least there is some refreshing wind!Read more

      Durban & Ballito

      April 7, 2017 in South Africa ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Heathrow - Dubai - Durban, Emirates Airline

The beginning of our adventure ✈️ Met up with the Moons in Dubai as they had a connecting flight from Gatwick, it had only been a week since we left Guernsey but we were all excited to see each other. Despite the long flight and need to freshen up we were persuaded to go and meet Dust and Taz's dads at their local in Ballito for a quick drink. We arrived at the Shortens Estate and it was a quick change and back out. Bailey on Dustin's brothers stag in and me to a dinner with all the ladies at Dustin's parents place. Good food, company and lots of dogs 😃 I was happy! The next day we walked along Ballito seafront starting at Salmon Bay, it was so nice to have the sun on our skin. We were left in the care of the "Ballies" (oldies) as Dust and Taz had a wedding to attend. They took us to a rugby game of the local team, the Durban Sharks. We were in a box with their friends meaning comfy seats and a steady flow of drinks. Bailey loved the biltong and voss available and got a top from the shark tank shop. Afterwards we had a "braai" (BBQ) in the car park. The next day we joined both families for breakfast before going for a dip at Salmon Bay, cold and refreshing waters. In the afternoon we had another braai at Shortens and met all of the extended family, finished with a big fire in the garden.

We spent the next morning surfing in Durban with Dustin, bails and I both managed to stand up together on one of our last attempts! Wet and bedraggled (me not the boys) we met Taz for lunch at a place called market. We then took to cable car to the top of the Moses Mobida Stadium giving us stunning views of the coastline and the city - bailey hated every minute of being at the top. Taz took me shopping at the huge new mall in Ballito, a dangerous game when you don't know the exchange rate. We had dinner with their grandparents that evening at Lafirma.

We completed Dust and Taz's running route at Ballito seafront the next morning before having breakfast at Concha and the best strawberry milkshake bailey has ever tasted. Taz took me to her friends salon Fraiche, full set of shellac nails for £10, bargain. Next up road trip to Nambiti game reserve near Ladysmith, this took around 2 1/2 hours.

We returned to Durban briefly before Cape Town, we went to Beluga for sushi. I've never loved Bailey more watching him attempt to eat and enjoy what he had ordered, no sushi for him again 😂 Enjoyed another braai at Shortens with friends and family, everyone was so lovely and welcoming to us during our stay we felt sad to leave!

      Durban

      October 8, 2019 in South Africa ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Top!
