      Safari-Addo Elephant National Park

      The Kraal bei Addo

Also wieder zurück nach PE.

      Addo Elephant National Park

      28 Mayıs 2023, Güney Afrika ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

We weren’t as cold last night as we were the night before, but it was still pretty uncomfortable. We were up early to get the tents down before our 7am breakfast. Ivan did fried eggs and toast for us, as well as the usual cereals, etc.

We were on the road by 7.30am, heading for Addo National Park. This park was created in 1931 to protect the 11 elephants that remained in the area. There are now 600, plus Cape buffalo, black rhino, zebras, and antelope.

We arrived at our campsite within the park at about 1pm, having stopped at a supermarket to stock up with supplies. While we were putting our tents up, Ivan provided the makings for us to create our own salad, meat, and cheese rolls for lunch. We ate these, cleared away, and then got back on the truck for a game drive.

It was Timo’s first ever game drive! He was a bit shocked that we couldn’t get off the truck and walk amongst the animals! Addo NP is covered in dense bush, so it was unlikely we would see any big cats – and indeed we didn’t! What we did see was:

      • Leopard tortoise
      • Pied crows
      • Mongoose
      • Elephants, including a large mating herd and a huge solitary bull
      • Secretary bird
      • Pole chanting goshawk
      • A group of female kudus
      • Lots of zebra
      • Black backed jackal
      • Warthog
      • Buffalo
      • Red hartebeest

At one viewpoint, we were allowed off the truck to look at a waterhole. We saw some birds, a small turtle, and, in the distance, and elderly giraffe and a male kudu. All of these were a considerable distance away, so we don’t have photographic proof of these sightings!

An early game drive with nothing to see!

      29 Mayıs 2023, Güney Afrika ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Back at the campsite, Mark went to sit in the bar as his legs were playing up. Timo, Kristina, and I went to the viewpoint on site, but there was nothing to see except a group of smoking South Africans and a pile of cigarette butts they’d left behind! We weren’t impressed!

We joined Mark for a drink and then went for dinner. Ivan had cooked a really spicy chicken curry with rice. All of us except Mark had streaming eyes and noses!

While we were eating, there was a fantastic lightning show! To start with, there was no thunder, and the rain held off, but it wasn’t long before it built to a real thunderstorm. We had to quickly clear everything away and retreat to our tents early!

During the night, I was kept awake, first by the thunder and the rain, and later by trains carrying coal away from the nearby coalfields. By 4.50am, I was wide awake and decided to go for a shower. We had to be up for a 6.30am game drive, anyway.

Luckily, Ivan had got up to put the kettle on, so we were able to have coffee before the drive. We put all our stuff back on the truck but left our tents to take down after the drive.

It was still dark when we set off, so there was definitely not much to see! As dawn broke, we could see that it was a very cloudy, dark, cold day. We didn’t see much wildlife during the couple of hours we were out:

      • Zebras
      • A black-backed jackal
      • Blacksmith plovers
      • Warthogs
      • Spoon-billed storks
      • Cormorant
      • A heron
      • Terns

We were cold when we got back to camp. We packed our tents away and then had breakfast. Today’s menu was bacon, baked beans, scrambled eggs, and toast. It was very welcome!

      Full safari day

      8 Eylül 2023, Güney Afrika ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Morning 7am and afternoon 4 hours safari drives today, pretty tiring on these bumpy roads. Safaris were good with rhinis, elephants being the best action. We have agreed to skip tomorrow afternoon drive if morning one is successful.
Food here has been really good.

      Morning drive/ chilling afternoon

      9 Eylül 2023, Güney Afrika ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Another early morning drive in search of lions. We found them but they were hiding, caught sight of them.
Decided to pass on the afternoon/ evening drive, we are getting too tired, it's actually hard work being a passenger for 7 hours on seriously bumpy terrain. It was also hottest day so far, animals will would be sheltering from sun and we were sunbathing in our pool. We have seen best of weather, getting colder as you can see.
We have now been away 7 days and we have seem so much already and have had fantastic friendly service all the way.

      Port Elizabeth, South Africa

      14 Ağustos 2023, Güney Afrika ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

We flew into Port Elizabeth from Johannesburg in the afternoon and arrived at our hotel in time for an early dinner. Port Elizabeth is a relatively large seaside city. The next day we went to a shopping centre to do some clothes shopping. There is great shopping here and everything is very cheap. Mum and I both took home a few items each. Next, we drove out to our accomodation in the country located near Adda Elephant park. We were staying in a cabin on a river, inside an orange farm. It was very pretty. The next day we woke up early to go to the elephant park. Even though it’s advertised as being a park for elephants, it’s actually possible to see the Big 5 there. Unfortunately we didn’t see too many animals but we did see a large, injured hyena walking alongside our car. Apart from that, we saw a few elephants, zebras, impala and dung beetles (Alex’s favourite). Definitely wasn’t as lucky as Kruger, although we only spent a few hours there.Okumaya devam et

A grey cloud in the blue sky

      12 Kasım 2023, Güney Afrika ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Today was the day we were picking up our camper. We got up and had a massive breakfast (omelette and all the trimmings) - then we made our way to the airport to meet representative of Bobo Camper (true name of the rental company). We met the guy and he quickly handed me the phone over: that is when we got informed that our camper suffered a break down on arrival in Port Elisabeth the evening before. The company was trying to get more info and we were told to wait. After 45 min, we were called back and told that since it was Sunday, the car was locked up in a garage and they could not access it til Monday. Since we had a booking in Addo Elephant National Park for the night (a tent site), the company offered to pay for the rental of a car (until they found out what is wrong with the camper) and the extra charge to change our accommodation from a camp to a cottage.
That is how we ended up making our way to Addo elephant park in a brand new VW Polo rental car- annoyed as this was not the experience we wanted. Nevertheless, the park made us forget this incident! There, you drive around loops and tracks and if you are lucky, you see animals- not as close as in Sabi Sands- but actually, we got lucky: wildebeests, zebras, warthogs, ostriches, kudus and 3 out of the big 5: elephants, lions and buffalos!
We managed to secure a cottage (last one) in the park and got to the info to pick up our keys 5 min before closure.
The night in the cottage was peaceful only slightly troubled by a small bat flying around the room (we were told in advance about it).

      Cheetah Rahabilitation

      26 Kasım 2023, Güney Afrika ⋅ ☀️ 90 °F

I don't usually like zoos - animals shouldn't be in cages.

      But!
When it is for rehabilitation and conservation? I will happily pay some money to get up close and personal with animals who would otherwise be too reclusive and/or dangerous.
After seeing big cats in the wild last week ( https://findpenguins.com/1ooyf9lg96j6p/footprin… ) , I am even more appreciative of getting a closer look.

So we visited the Daniell Cheetah Farm near Kirkwood and it was wonderful! - https://daniellcheetahproject.com/

Our visit started with enjoying the quirky gift shop and a cold beer. We arrived just before three, as we were under the impression that tours are hourly. It was disappointing to learn that tours are hourly *except at three*, when everyone rests. The quirky shop and beer isn't exciting enough to fill an hour but we figured... "May as well wait." The Jackal IPA that I had was excellent, incidentally.

Waiting worked out GREAT as we ended up doing a special 3:30 private tour with Kayla (not sure of spelling) who was fantastic: friendly, funny, and knowledgeable. The one-hour tour lasted more like 90 minutes and felt like 30 minutes. I love it when I am instantly rewarded for patience, which happena often, it seems, but not always. Sometimes patience turns out to be a horrible waste of time, but not today!

We got to hear about the lives, loves, and losses of meerkats, cheetahs, lions, leopards, african wildcats (very affectionate), Caracal -african lynx (3-4M vertical leap!), Serval, and hyeena. There was a wild tortoise cruising around too.

I still think adult hyeena are dang ugly but now I see that they also have personality. And a jaw that can apply 1,100 psi... So I won't call 'em ugly to their face anymore.

Seeing a healthy adult (220kg) lion from 1m distance with only a thin wire fence is .... Impressive. They truly are regal and magnificent. I also learned (not firsthand, fortunately) that male lions will piss on anything and everything, especially tourists.

We were extra fortunate because the cats were waking from their afternoon naps and we got to see them moving about and stretching. Such incredible strength and grace!

Then we headed to visit Bruce's cousin, Jenny and I got some more good animal lovin' along with a fantastic home cooked meal and some hilarity.
