      Buen Camino

      Into Arca

      29. lokakuuta 2023, Espanja ⋅ 🌧 50 °F

Today we walked into a tiny village called Arca which is near O Pedruoso. We are within 20 km of the cathedral in Santiago!

We again didn’t take many pictures due to the rain but it was not nearly as rainy today as yesterday. We had a very gentle walk through countryside and planted eucalyptus groves as well as through villages and deciduous oak groves. There were a couple sections next to the highway too. Some of our Camino friends were talking about the movies fan’s documentaries about the Camino. One thing they never show is how much of the Camino is on paved roads and next to highways!

Today we stopped for coffee early and later got a sandwich in a village. They brought us little bowls of callous con garbanzos, a soup made of garbanzo beans, broth, and tripe. It was really good! I’m not sure I’m going to start putting tripe in our shopping list but it was very good in a soup.

We are in an unusual little casa rural, an inn. It has rooms and a little restaurant next door. We like the little restaurants in inns; you don’t have to help searching for food, and the food is usually pretty good. Lots of meat and fried potatoes, but it’s usually tasty. This village probably has 100 people max so I’m glad food is easy to find here today!

Tomorrow we are on to Santiago!

      Arzùa

      26. toukokuuta 2023, Espanja ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

      Ribadiso to O Pedrouzo

      2. heinäkuuta 2023, Espanja ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Left early (6.45) but not quite as early as a 6am alarm would aspire to as I was moving slowly, despite a good nights sleep, and my phone was finding it equally difficult to get a reasonable amount of charge. Eventually I got moving and phone reached about 83% and we left.
A cool morning with a bit of cloud but very pretty.
First town was Arzua where many people finished yesterday as it’s a Brierley stop. We didn’t stop but continued on, stopping for coffee at a popular spot with a garden a bit further on. As I waited to order coffee they were showing España has talent on the TV - a pair of gymnasts were performing to Tom Odell - slightly surreal. Very disappointing coffee and ‘artisan’, but actually not, toast, so continued on quite quickly and found a better one a bit later.
It was a gentle day really - up and down but not severely so. However I was quite tired and my legs were feeling a bit weak. Relieved to stop for a drink and a sandwich at El Rincón de Maria in A Brea. The sandwich was very good.
Then on, and on, to O Pedrouzo. Just before arriving I walked for a while with Robert from Utrecht. He has walked the Primitivo - a very hard two week walk - but very beautiful. He told me he’d done his knee in on the third day going downhill but was still going and still loved it and would be back next year for another Camino. He goes as far as the knee allows - which today was a bit short of O Pedrouzo - but he’s still hoping to go to Finisterre.
O Pedrouzo was very familiar as Cressida and I spent the day there before starting our week on the Portuguese last October. It’s a town that has everything and definitely only exists in its current form because of the Camino. I had one of my favourite ice creams then headed to our accommodation, which is more like an air b&b than a pension. But perfectly fine.
We had heard that there was a pool at one of the big albergues so we headed there and had a wonderful swim in the biggest and best pool so far. I really need to create a swimmers guide to the Camino!
Dinner with Anna, Caroline and Alfred from Denmark. Alfred is an Arsenal fan so knows London quite well. He was very charming and we had some great Mexican food.
Just caught the last 15 mins of the mass at the church - we’d been told that it started at 7.30 but it was actually at 7 so we missed most of it. Then watched some local, mainly young peoples wind bands playing (with one random cello) and ate ice cream.
A good day but I am very tired now and am threatened with another very early start tomorrow, which definitely makes sense but will also definitely be difficult.

Road to Arzua 16km Day 4

      16. toukokuuta, Espanja ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

16km felt like nothing today and the body is barely sore. An easyish day through a mix of sun and rain (again) but a lovely green trail, quaint villages and churches, and the Austrailians again! (We posed for a pic on the rock bridge).

Got into town early enough that after our amazing paella, many of us did laundry and waited in the bar for it to be done...and the way these Spainiards free pour their drinks...yeesh!

Morag arrived and it was lovely to see her! She had a pretty grueling pace and was a little sore. I assured her if she was traveling with the turtle tomorrow (aka me) that she'd be taking it much easier. It will be good to chat and walk tomorrow.

Had great pizza (and another rum) at the place Pau said was great...and this time he was right!

Early to bed as we have a 23km day tomorrow...and then one more sleep till Santiago. Had a video call with Ezra today and looking forward to the second half of my vacation!

Stage 32 - along the way

      6. toukokuuta, Espanja ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

We met a couple, Jo and Bill from Perth, who had done two weeks on the Camino Primitivo which had just joined our path (the Frances). They had gone from hardly seeing a soul to the crowded Way we’ve had from Sarria, and it was quite the gear change for them.

A couple of good stops today where we met friends old and new, as well as picking up a few more stamps to fill our pilgrim cards for our Compostela tomorrow.

      Camino Day 27 - Arzua

      20. syyskuuta 2023, Espanja ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Getting back to normal distances with 17 today and 2 x 20km days coming up to finish.
A little bit of rain today but not enough to be a problem, just enough to get our clothes wet but not enough to get wet under foot.
It actually made a nice change.
Injuries are healing and everyone is feeling great.
The"walking dead" are dispersing a little, or we are getting used to them.

      Leaving Ribadiso

      6. toukokuuta, Espanja ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

The rain finally stopped and we enjoyed a warm(ish) dry day, which was very welcome.

We walked from Ribadiso to the first town, Arzúa, for breakfast with Peter, and from there it was a fairly gentle 22km walk - again through ancient woodlands, eucalyptus forests (which make it so easy to breathe!) and, later, rolling green hills 💚Lue lisää

      Palas de Rei to Arzúa

      6. toukokuuta, Espanja ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

476 miles done. 24 miles left.

Sunshine!! Finally. After a week of trudging through rain and mud, I was beginning to be quite grumpy. I’m back to my mostly happy and minimally grumpy self. What takes the fun out of being grumpy is being by yourself. Grumpiness is something that has to be shared, it’s not a solo activity. (Sorry Bryan)

Was a longer walk today, but only two more short days ahead and I am done! Misión casi cumplida!

And… I was able to wash all of my clothes tonight, sanitizing them against all the ewwww (see yesterday’s post) from the past few days.

I chose a restaurant based solely on the fact that I wanted churros for dessert, which is the “famous” thing about the one I sought out. My meal (cubed pork with cheese over fries) was good, but I’d saved room for churros. By the time I’d ordered them, they told me that they were sold out. So instead of resurrecting my grumpiness, I sought out an ice cream shop on the way back to the albergue.

Two sleeps until Santiago de Compestela!
