      Los Arcos

      September 1, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌩️ 20 °C

Dzień pomimo krótkości kilometrowej, długi. Bardzo malowniczy. Szliśmy sobie dolinami, piaszczystymi drogami, wzdłuż gajów oliwnych i winnic.
Pierwszy postój to kowal z aktywną kuźnią i pięknymi wyrobami ozdobionymi ciepłym sercem kowala. Cuda tam były, ale tak na prawdę nic nie można zabrać, chyba, że jest się ciężarówka. Na szczęście miał drobiazgi które Kasia zakupiła i na koniec zapakował nam plecaki dojrzałymi figami.
Zaraz potem winnica Irache z fontanną wodna i winną. Bardzo piękny koncept i gest w stronę pielgrzymów.
Później już w górę, w dół, piękne polne drogi z cudownymi widokami. Zapanował gorąc prawie do 40 stopni, ale na szczęście był wiaterek. Ostatni odcinek 10 km bez żadnej wioseczki no i bez wody. Dotarliśmy w końcu do Los Arcos, czyli miasta łuków.

      Estella to Los Arcos

      May 11, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

Woke up at 5.50am and realised I'd lost all my Laundrette washed clothes and waterproof jacket. Managed to figure out where the restaurant was from last night and that it should open at 9.30am. Found a Decathlon nearby in case I wasn't able to get my clothes and jacket back but it was all ok. Meant I didn't leave til 10am and the Camino was really quiet. Was great walking alone. Got to Los Arcos at 3ish. Great room tonight. 28km to Logroño (jealous Dom?) tomorrow so going to start early. Got a room for one night but Saturday was too pricey so moving on to Ventosa for a night.Read more

      Day 8 Azqueta to Sansol

      September 28, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

We are so grateful for the wonderful weather! We were delighted to find a double decker bus that a German couple had converted to a cafe on the bottom and living quarters up top. They are making their way to Santiago as part of a documentary. Kim and I had a milkshake for breakfast. Julie a cappuccino with scallop shell design froth. We also were surprised to find an accordion player on a bench near a vinyard. The midpoint food truck was missing so we ate lunch in Los Arcos. We took a nice break there. Then on to Sansol.Read more

      Day 7 Corauqui to Azqueta

      September 27, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

Another beautiful day. Decided to head out and grab breakfast at the next town. Came across this lovely table of fruits and bread for donation. There are many churches along the route. We are now in the Rioja region where the wine grapes are grown. The pilgrim wine fountain had run out of wine by the time we arrived. (Not a big loss because rumor has it that it is not too good...😮).Read more

Can I offer u an egg in this trying time

      April 1 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

The first five kilometres today were ugly and hard. I felt tired, I left Estella without breakfast, and it was all gross industrial estate. At eight kilometres, I was having a much better time, and when the opportunity for breakfast presented itself I grasped it.

There were two guys working there. One was rushing around excitedly and one was treating me like the camera in a fourth wall break. Every time the other one did something he'd look at me as if to say 'do you see what I have to put up with' but in a good natured way.

One of these looks came when his mate was bent over a basket of hard boiled eggs, drawing on them - the excited one looked up at me and exclaimed it was the best part of his day, and the other one looked at me, looked at him, and laughed and shook his head.

When I left, the exasperated one gave me two Easter eggs, for the road. We smiled real big at each other.

      Day 15 - to Azqueta

      June 29 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

This morning I left Pamplona and waited for a little bit for the rain to pass and had some coffee together with Anna, before each going our own way.

Most of the day was dry, if a bit cold, and I spent most of my time riding up and down different gravel paths, just following the Camino.

I wasn't covering much distance and at first I thought it must have been because I left late but it turned out I just did a lot of climbing today. It's a very hilly countryside.

The views were great though. The cloudy skies gave a lot of dramatic backgrounds against the endless fields of grain and the small towns were dotted around and built around hills, sometimes very steep.

At 17:00 I called it a day and looked for the nearest hostel or auberge.

Let's see how dinner and breakfast is here. It smells delicious...

Stage 6 - along the way

      April 8 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

It was very warm today and we had beautiful blue skies for most of the walk. There were more rolling hills and lots of green, and the path was gentle and mercifully there was little asphalt.

Today saw us visiting another iconic Camino stop - the wine fountain at the Bodegas de Irache, where Navarra wine is dispensed through a water fountain-type tap, and pilgrims fill their shells (or their water bottles…) There is also a gorgeous blacksmith’s shop a few metres away, which was worth investigating.

We passed a castle perched on top of a perfectly triangular mountain that looked like a kid’s drawing. Also an old ‘fountain’ that had steps leading down to water it looked as though you could just sit in happily.

Pretty villages provided snacks and lunch and the hills changed from rolling ones to Rockie type ones and back again.

      Day 11. Azqueta to Sansol

      May 26 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 50 °F

Goodbye to friends made at our albergue. Helena, the hostess, rang a bell as we each left. Such a sweet parting. The day was rolling hills. Good to get a rhythm going. Stopped in Los Arcos for a snack and went into a beautiful cathedral. Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance architecture was noted. Every inch was either gold fresco, carved wood, etc. Did not have a reservation for the night, but somehow something appears. Nice shower and Paella for dinner. Looking forward to a good nights sleep. Hope there are not any snorers. Hahah
Grateful for ear plugs, grateful for a bed tonight and grateful for dinner.

      Azqueta to Los Arcos

      September 29, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

We had a great breakfast at La Perla Negra ( never saw Jack Sparrow), granola, yogurt, fresh fruit, cheese, plus the usual toast and jam. Plus big coffee mugs, instead of tiny espresso cups. And Helena encouraged us to put apples and bananas in our pockets.

Weather is wet, but not bad. Heavy mist early this morning . Followed by occasional light drizzle, but no heavy rain!

Another shorter day of walking, little more than 14 km to Los Arcos. Just one village other village, a 2km climb to Villamayor de Montjardin at the base of the big hill. There was a Fronton there!

Then a 12 km walk through an isolated valley with hay fields, vineyards, olive groves, and asparagus fields. There were signs of wild fires from August here, about 1.5 miles of hillside were black trees with no undergrowth!

We made it to Los Arcos for lunchtime!
