      Schon wieder Flughafen

      December 18, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

Memo an mich: No smoking areas

      Heading to Porto, Portugal

      September 17, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

》Leaving Madrid Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport heading to Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport

》Madrid Airport’s official name is Aeropuerto Adolfo Suárez-Madrid Barajas, so people refer to it as “Barajas” to make it shorter.

Contrary to other European capitals, Madrid has a unique airport serving all the routes arriving to and departing from the city.

Madrid Airport is Spain’s biggest and most important airport. It currently has five terminals (T1, T2, T3, T4 and T4S) and three control towers. Each year 40+ million of passengers use it.

      Endlich mal wieder ein Auto...

      April 28, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

So weit so gut.

Hätte mir so einiges erspart. Nämlich fast eine Stunde und nervige Fahrerei. 🙈

    • Headed Home

      July 15, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

We’re at Madrid airport, waiting for our flight to Atlanta. We returned to Santiago by bus on Sunday — no more walking! We had the rest of the day, and yesterday, to do our laundry and do some sightseeing. We also visited a couple of our favorite restaurants.

The interior of the cathedral is empty of the pews and the massive organ pipes; scaffolding and plastic cover the walls. It’s being readied for 2021, the next Holy Year (when St. James’ birthday, July 25th, falls on a Sunday). The exterior was completed last year, and the Portico of Glory at the old entrance is now open to the public. This is the first time I was able to see the Portico, on my third trip to Santiago. But no photos were allowed, sorry!

We had a great trip, no injuries or crises, and we’re actually feeling great. And now it’s time to go back to the “real world.”

      Thanks for coming along!

      Monday, Madrid

      September 25, 2017 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Little sleep on the flight over and we walked forever to wait in the customs line. When my turn came, the passport officer said not a word, but stamped my passport and I was on my way. Found an ATM that worked so got a few euros, and got assistance from tourist info to reach my hotel. Got to learn how to dial in this country. I'll try 011 in front of the number next time.

At hotel, checked in and ready to take a metro to Puerto del Sol for food and sight seeing.

Took the metro, but had lots of trouble finding it. I used my limited Spanish and was successful. Plazas Sol and Major were big and crowded . Folks here smoke more than Americans do and was it obvious. Tapas are wonderful and I made a meal of what I got. Rick steves audio guide gave me some difficulty as I had to restart often as the volume died.

Anyway, after a fashion I realized that I gotta take a nap so all for now.

Two hours and I feel great. Hope I can get some shut eye later. I've also learned that the Spanish have trouble giving directions that make sense. For example the directions I got this am for the metro seemed pretty simple...straight, then make a left. He even gave me a map. Wrong way as I had to ask multiple times and had all sorts of twists and turns before arriving at the metro, and finding a supermarket with directions proved to be an around the block twice effort. Go straight he says, but the street curved to the right. I found it and had a wonderful tuna salad sandwich for dinner.

      All for today...

      Laddar batterierna

      September 13, 2016 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

      March 5, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

Read more

      Madrid

      June 4, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 75 °F

Phoenix overnight to London, manhandled (in a nice, polite way) through security (Trump is in England now and they told me we can have him back, thank you) ran to catch my connecting flight to Madrid on Iberian airlines - a plane full of impossibly good-looking Spanish people, even the ones older than me -Then all the rigmarole with finding my checked bag (they wouldn't let me carry on my walking poles, even though I could disable somebody more easily with my fists than with those light weight poles), figuring out the European SIM card for my cell phone, getting Euros, taxi, hotel, wake up call at 5am to take an Uber back to the airport for my flight to Porto, Portugal. The details can be challenging for me, but I'm happy to be here!

I got an international calling plan on my phone before I left and a Spanish SIM card at the Madrid airport. But like every time I go overseas, I can't remember how to call or message people in the US with my GD phone.

Nothings seems to work. Tips welcome.

5 June: the first "etapa" of my Camino: walking about 4 miles though "el Catedral" de Madrid airport to my gate at 5:15am. I'm the only "pilgrim" here.
As we boarded the plane, a group of business men behind me were singing. Now I'm on the plane and the two German men sitting next to me spontaneously sang a song and then went back to chatting. You know you're not in the U S anymore when random groups of people burst into song in public.
