      Barcelona day 2

      7 de setembro de 2023, Espanha ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

One more day of exploring Barcelona. We went to Sagrada Familia, a Catholic Church built by Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi. It is the largest unfinished Catholic Church in the world. Ground breaking was in 1882, expected completion date is 2026. We also went up Montjuic which is apparently the birthplace of Barcelona. We had sweeping views of the Mediterranean and the city of Barcelona. And of course we enjoyed our drinks and tapas. Tomorrow we are making are way to St Jean Pied de Port, France where will will spend the night then begin our Camino on Saturday.Leia mais

      Casa Batlló

      8 de julho de 2023, Espanha ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Casa Batlló is one of the most interesting, beautiful, and creative places of the trip so far. It was a great way to start our Gaudi's day. The exhibition was a mix of 2 digital experiences and an audioguide with AR complement using a tablet. The guide helped us understand the story and design elements of the house in a playful way (e.g., pointing the tablet to a window in the main hall would show a turtle to highlight the inspiration behind it). The tablet also allowed us to visualize how the different rooms looked like when the house was originally built and inhabited by the Batlló family and few residents.

Each room was unique, and we could also experience some of the furniture designed by Gaudi for the house. Is a playful and gorgeous piece of architecture inspired by the sea, salamanders, rain, plants, and many other natural elements. It is a really unique experience, and there may be nothing else like it in the world.

We got some orange juice and a coffee on the top of the building, and then we finished our tour and headed out to see other modernist buildings on the same block. Finally, we took a bus to Park Guell, where Gaudi created a unique public space while exploring how to alter known shapes and structures (like aqueducts and gardens) in unique ways.

      Gaudi and Pickpockets in Barcelona

      25 de maio de 2023, Espanha ⋅ 🌧 63 °F

Oh Barcelona- last time I was here was in 1996. I have such amazing memories being here, visiting with my mom, for a few days. We walked everywhere, had delicious tapas, and had so much fun!

This has been different - we’re so tired and ready to go home. That said, Barcelona is an amazing city.

Some of the positives of Barcelona:

      - seeing everything Gaudi like Sagrada Familia and his house. His architecture - well…I can’t even put it into words - you just have to experience his art and think about his mind worked.

      - watching a swing band at the roof of Casa Batllò with the girls at night.

      - tapas to me were a huge treat; girls not huge on Iberian ham and seafood. I enjoyed it all!

      Main negative:
I got pickpocketed the first time I let down my guard this entire trip! Someone stole my phone while at a very busy store - I didn’t even know until a security guard told me he saw a couple follow me in the store on security cameras and the woman took the phone and passed it off to the man. They got arrested and I got my phone back - hallelujah!

Humbling experience to have travelled around the world and 2 days before I come home to get pickpocketed…hey! That’s part of the experience though right??

      ————————-

We leave in the AM and will be traveling for about 24 hours to get back home. We can’t wait. This has been an adventure of a lifetime…and more than anything I’m so grateful that both Brian and I got to spend so much time with our girls. They are such special human beings and I know that we won’t get this opportunity probably ever again to spend this much time with them. They’re growing up so quickly and it’s been beautiful to watch!

I hope that these experience will continue to shift and shape their uniqueness in this world; I hope they see that life goes on whether we like it or not; that there are always different ways to look at life, people, cultures, foods, love, and even a landscape. The world can be raw, beautiful, unique, harsh, and comforting all at the same time. It’s kind of how I feel about Gaudi’s work.

We just need to continue to shift our perspective a bit, realize we will always be learning, and we have to be open to continuing to grow as human beings.

This is my last post from the Sellers Family Round-The-World trip! Sellers girls out ❤️ we can’t wait to be home with Brian and the doggies.

      Casa Battlo

Casa Batllo - Goudi Part 1

      14 de agosto de 2022, Espanha ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Today we started the morning at the Casa Batllo. AMAZING. This structure was built and designed by Goudi. The premise of Goudi's work revolved around nature and everything flowing. So nothing was really symmetrical and everything flowed. The outside and inside of the building was lined with glass that was recycled from other purposes (zoom into the picture from the outside...you'll be surprised! Goudi was also the first of his time to reuse material). This building had two stairwells in the inside which made me think of the sea because of how blue they were and the flow upwards. All of the windows allowed for natural lighting and airflow. To add, even the doors shape was asymmetrical around the edges and the stairwell railing was like a spine of a creature. Finally, the ceilings were never just ceilings they would have some sort of design and much were decorated with gold leaflets. So many fine details and truly spectacular!

Casa Batllo Eixample Barcelona Sat 23Sep

      23 de setembro de 2023, Espanha ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

We entered the Casa Batllo located on La Rambla in Eixample at 5pm. In 1903 it was purchased by Mr Josep Batlló y Casanovas, a textile industrialist who owned several factories in Barcelona. Mr Josep Batlló granted full creative freedom to Antoni Gaud and the building was fully reformed between 1904 and 1906. The architect completely changed the façade, redistributing the internal partitioning, expanding the lightwell and converting the inside into a true work of art. Besides its artistic value, the building is also extremely functional, much more characteristic of modern times than of the past.Leia mais
