      Arzua to O Pedrouzo

      June 27, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

I feel like the entertainment on the trail is becoming about the people rather than the scenery. We’re walking through small towns that are sweet and scenic but by this time we feel like we’ve seen it. The eucalyptus forests smell good and harkened us back to our California days but we’re over that now too. The volume of people on the trail is greater now and the characters are coming out. Today there was a basque walking the Camino on stilts. Ollie says they use stilts to shepherd their flocks so he must be doing it to represent his culture. I walked with “Springfield”(That’s what I call them) today- a couple who live in Springfield Illinois. They started in St Jean and have done the whole thing. There was also “Holland” who started in Holland and has done over 3000km and is almost done. He was having a bad day. I think he’s struggling to return to normal life after walking for the past 148 days straight. He’s two days out from being done, that’s they only reason I can come up with to be having a bad day. Then there’s a man we’ve passed every day now for the last three days. (We pass him every morning which means he walks hours longer than we do to catch up at night and gets up earlier than us to get back in the trail.) He walks with a struggle- one step for every five I can take. I can tell he has to think about the movement every step he takes. He has scars all over his head from surgery. I am embarrassed that all I can think to say is “Buen Camino” as I pass him. There has to be more I can come up with in my limited Spanish to encourage him. I pray he makes it.

My feet are sore and my shins are killing me but I’ve got 18 km left to go. Tomorrow will feel awesome!

      Day 7 as Pilgrims

      April 13 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Our first stay in an Albergue was wonderful, although we did pick a posh one where we had our own private room and bathroom. We ate breakfast along the way at Cafe Uzal, coffee and croissants. Kay showed up with the North Carolinians whilst we were there (still don’t know their names)!! There was a sculpture garden across from the cafe with a dinosaur and other interesting things.
We stopped again at Cafe Novo for Fanta. There is no accommodation in Poulo so we walked a further 2.5 kilometers to the town of Ordes to Hotel Alda Camino Ingles. We ate the equivalent of a cream tea for lunch and then we chatted with two Canadians whilst we waited to check in.
Our room is basic but lovely and spotlessly clean with a beautiful view and lovely light. We went off to find dinner after a nap and a shower. We chose A Campana and we were not disappointed. The first course was a stir fry of mushrooms, shrimp, and octopus, followed by sliced ribeye which we cooked ourselves at the table with salad and fries. Dessert was cheesecake. As a surprise (there is always a surprise) we got to choose a liquor each.
We took a stroll around town and are ready to crash now 😴

      Day 8 as Pilgrims

      April 14 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

We started walking this morning from Ordes, 2.5 kilometers from the Camino. We thought about taking a taxi back to pick up the Camino but we ate so much last night that we needed to walk extra today!! Breakfast in the hotel was nice so we took extra for a picnic lunch.
I had one of those moments today where all was well in my world. I started to reflect on our journey and I felt such gratitude for this opportunity and for the fact that we had the time, the means, and the physical stamina to do this. Best of all, I am doing this with the love of my life ♥️
Mother Nature has been all around us all week and I have so enjoyed all the sights, the smells, and the beauty of everything; the ocean, the different flowers, the eucalyptus trees and the farmyard smells.
The weather was hot and sunny today, particularly the last stretch but the Houston heat had us well prepared we found our hotel and showered and crashed for a while.
We have just returned to our hotel from a lovely dinner of Cesar Salad and Risotto. Wherever we have been to eat, we have been presented with a surprise, either a small appetizer with a beer, a small piece of cake with coffee, last night we had a delicious liqueur after dinner, all complementary and offered with pleasure. It is so refreshing to be served this way.

      Fuß-OP auf Pilger-Art 👨‍⚕️

      September 30, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

✌️Read more

      Nach Sigüeiro

      October 1, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

      -----English

On the way I enjoyed the peace, the aloneness and the thoughts. There were no major ascends or descends to overcome.

We enjoyed lunch and dinner again in a larger group. There were some emotional moments because the farewell is within reach. Everyone felt it and so we agreed to meet tomorrow at 7 a.m. for the last route on the Camino.

The hostel is nicely decorated and there is breakfast tomorrow. Also made beds and light sheets to cover yourself with. That's comfortable on the Camino.

      Hospital de Bruma not

      April 28, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

All the beds at the albergue taken so we are at a roadside hotel 2km from the camino. Can't order dinner at this hotel because everything is done by QR code on your phone and we older people refuse to use our phones to order food and the hotel refused to give us printed menus. Went elsewhere for dinner.Read more

      Betanzos to Meson do Vento

      May 7, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

We left Betanzos early and caught the morning light on the town square.

The remainder of the day was a long long long slog, ever upwards, in blistering heat with little chance to pick up water.

      Not that I'm bitter...Read more

      Camino Ingles ... Never Stop

      October 13, 2017 in Spain ⋅ 🌫 12 °C

Unexpectedly we have a few unplanned days on our itinerary. ... what to do, what to do?

We chose to walk a section of another Camino called the Camino Ingles. This track will also take us to Santiago de Compostella via another route.

Coleen was interviewed by a Kiwi pilgrim doing a documentary so perhaps she will become famous on this Camino!

      Hospital de Bruma

      September 28, 2017 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

The Spanish word "hospital" has to do with hospitality. The name of the town is Hospital de Bruma. There are a few homes here as well as a bar and the Municipal Albergue. Not much to report today. Fairly easy road walking with some trails and very small towns. Nice lunch stop at Mesón Museo Xente No Camiño. Beautiful paintings on the walls all painted by the owner.Read more
