Day 7: Pamplona to Puenta la Reina

      24 Mei 2023, Sepanyol ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

      Mileage: 15 miles
      Altitude gain: 1,565
      Altitude loss: 1,824
Weather: cloudy to start, sunny to finish, with the cool wind miraculously at our backs
      Total mileage: 54.5

We left Pamplona early (7:00) since it was going to be the longest day yet for me. I’ve been worried for a long time about Alto del Perdon, the mountain in the middle of the stage. The word was that the ascent isn’t too bad, but that the descent is steep, rocky, and tricky. Well, as with many things on this journey so far, I discovered that my worry was outsized. The ascent wasn’t bad at all, and the descent was easier than the one from Col Lepoeder the other day. What a relief! That said, I am very grateful to have not walked down that rocky hill in the rain/mud!

This was my first full guidebook “stage,” and therefore my longest walk yet. I was thankful for company! Hopefully I’ll get used to this kind of mileage, but this first long day was tough both mentally and physically, and I was glad for the giggling breaks along the way!

      1. The walk out of Pamplona
      2. Low clouds obscured the mountains in the morning
      3. So many more poppies! I told Angela that if I thought I could get back up I would lie down, pretend to sleep, and have her take a Wizard of Oz shot of me. Ha. So beautiful. I just love that shade of red.
      4. Angela found her European pied de terre.
      5. Several villages along the way with their imposing churches. The church bells are always very different than what I’m used to - they’re not synthesized or large, and they sound like it. Almost like the school bell on Little House on the Prairie.
      6. The top of Alto del Perdon has a sculpture of pilgrims in front of which it is de rigeur to pose. I was very happy to be there after seeing so many pictures and reading about it. What you can’t see are the wind turbines nearby; they’re surprisingly loud!
      7. I couldn’t really capture the vistas from the mountains with my phone camera. We kept stopping to admire, but any photos just don’t do the views justice. Here’s one anyway of the view looking over our afternoon’s walk.
      8. The path was just lined with wildflowers.
      9. More poppies and wheat. I can see why Monet was inspired.
      10. Some of the last hills before Puenta la Reina. It looks like maybe this was one of the areas to have forest fires last year. I hope there isn’t more of that this year.

      Arre to Uterga 22km 8.5hrs

      12 September 2023, Sepanyol ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Our day started off hiking through Pamplona so we took our time and explored the cathedral and some other sites. We bought some ham with the help of Cecile to add to her bread and tomatoes for our lunch today. After Pamplona it was a 300 meter climb. We met a 71 year old pilgrim from Italy who said it reminded him of Tuscany (this is his third Camino !).
After our big trek up it was a treacherous hike down on loose rocks….of course I fell but my pack broke my fall, damn those loose rocks but all is good. We are staying at Camino del
Perdon in Uterga tonight. Pilgrim dinner tonight is with Italy, France and Australia

      Chatouillons les nuages

      5 Mei 2023, Sepanyol ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

      Into Puente La Reina

      25 September 2023, Sepanyol ⋅ ☀️ 52 °F

Today we left Pamplona and walked up up up to the Alto de Perdón, which is where that famous metal monument is that you see on “The Way.” It wasn’t as tough as we thought it would be. Going down was rocky and slippery though! There were so many windmills on the ridge up there. We were excited to get close to them so we could hear the sound they make. They were almost entirely silent until we got really really really close. And up close they make a sound like an airplane flying overhead. It’s quiet though. If you live right next to those windmills, I think he would disregard the sound like any other kind of white noise.

We stopped in a town along the way for a sandwich and soda at an albergue and bar. Two Israeli men invited us to share a table with them. We chatted for quite a while and learned all about how Yom Kippur, which is today, is celebrated. Some people fast but not them.

Over the last five or 6 miles between the bottom of the hill, and the town that we’re staying in, it was quite hot. The temperature was probably about 85°F. There wasn’t much shade so we were pretty exhausted from walking in the sun. we both put on sunscreen which was great. Unfortunately I missed a little spot on the back of my leg and it is a very bright color of red.

We are going to stay in this town, Puente La Reina, for two nights to rest our feet and legs. So far it doesn’t seem like a very exciting place. The church is pretty. Everything was closed on Sunday yesterday. Today everything is closed because it’s Monday. I’m not sure how that works! We went to a bar and the woman there told us if we come back at 8 o’clock she’ll sell us a hamburger. So right now we have walked 19+ miles and we are eating chips and cokes in our room. Hopefully we are able to get some food tonight! We did stock up on non-perishables in a little store along the way. We have a mango, some dried pineapple, and some granola bars now too. And as much as David made fun of my skittle purchase, they came in handy today when we were tired and hot. I think skittles and Lifesavers are foods that deserve their own food group! Foods that are terrible for you that elevate your blood sugar really quickly when you are doing stuff that burns through fuel!

We’re looking forward to a rest day tomorrow. Our intention is to do a little as possible! Our feet and our legs are a little sore, but basically in good shape. We purposely chose a sleepy little town to take a rest day in, so we would not be tempted to go all over an interesting town like Pamplona and see all the cool things.

      1. DAY

      29 April 2023, Sepanyol ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

      Elli

Il Normale non fa da me...

Deciso Comunicato occhi chiusi e via.

      Rest Day Pamplona!

      6 September 2023, Sepanyol ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

      Pamplona
      Day 5 - Rest Day

We spent a lovely day being tourists in Pamplona. Another hot one so we decided we needed to shop for something cooler to wear...any excuse 💃😉
Highlight of the day was visiting the bull ring. Great informative self tour, gave good insight into the passion surrounding the sport.
Very pleased we took the day to explore this beautiful city, however as far as rest days go we failed in that department as we still clocked up over 10k for the day!
Planning a 6am start for tomorrow as it looks like a tough day with some big hills to climb along the way! Back into it!! 😁

Encouraged by the kindness of pilgrims

      5 Ogos 2023, Sepanyol ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Today was a beautiful day - sunny and in the 70s. Everything felt easier with sunshine after two days of rain. The walk was more level today and was a welcome relief from the ascents and descents of the past few days. It was a beautiful walk through different patches of forests and passing by farms and through little villages along the way.

I walked for a bit with some people I met from Germany and Spain on my second night in the hostel. Their pace ended up being too fast for me, so I lagged behind. My knee started hurting pretty badly so I stopped to try to fashion a compression band out of my buff. I was feeling pretty worn and tired by the time I was getting to the last few miles for the day. As I was walking slowly through one of the little villages before Pamplona, the German man called out my name from a cafe and invited me to sit with them for a coffee. I walked with them the final mile into Pamplona and was grateful for the companionship and not having to focus on finding my way and just following them.

Pamplona feels like a big city after the tiny villages I’ve been staying in so far. I wandered into the old part of Pamplona to find somewhere to eat and saw some people I met from Ireland sitting at a restaurant outside. They invited me over and I asked if I could join them for dinner. I think the longer I’m on the trail the more kinship there will be with other pilgrims I’ve already met and new people I’ll continue to meet. I’m grateful for the companionship today.

      The Road to Pamplona

      5 September 2023, Sepanyol ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

      Zubiri to Pamplona
      Day 4 - 21 km

We had an early start today as we wanted to get to Pamplona before the 31 degree heat set in. It was a good day walking with all the fellow pilgrims we have met along the way. Our first mission was to find a coffee shop but alas we were either too early or they were closed on Tuesday’s. 😧 We still ambled along past little villages and then into the big metropolis of Pamplona by 1.30pm. Our accommodation is great at Hostel Alho right in the middle of Pamplona and planning a rest day for tomorrow so we can check out the sights. Great night looking around the busy town square with a few wines and our first taste of Paella.Baca lagi

      Made it to Pamplona!

      7 September 2022, Sepanyol ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Day 4 and 5 Pamplona - Had to make up for the easy day before - walked 32 kms from Bizkaretta to Pamplona - with some significant climbs and a serious descent! Luckily I ran into a woman who had done this route before and she knew where to find the elevator that takes you up to the walled city of Pamplona. Saved me about a hundred steps up 😀. Spent 2 days in Pamplona to recover from it!
Having listened to Hemingways book en route and to the vivid description of the 7 day bull festival I decided to check out the bull ring. They had a self guided tour with photos and videos of the whole process including the famous bull run. I’ve added a video of a small section of their show.

      Jakobsweg Tag 3

      11 Mac 2020, Sepanyol ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

"Herzlich Willkommen an Bord! Hinsetzen, Klappe halten und bitte möglichst schnell wieder verschwinden! Danke!"
