      Santiago!

      30 oktober 2023, Spanje ⋅ ☁️ 50 °F

Today was an incredible day! We made it to Santiago! We rejoiced and we cried and we are slowly settling into “normal” life. All over the city are wandering pilgrims in ponchos looking like this reentry into a world without long stretches on the trail is not a smooth and easy process.

Tomorrow we will be in Santiago and we’ll go to the pilgrims’ mass and see inside the cathedral and do laundry. The receptionist at our hotel is going to help us wean off if Camino pizza and pork with fried potatoes. He says he’ll send us out for real Galician food tomorrow.

The walk was tough today. David pulled a muscle in his calf yesterday so he was very sore and moving slowly. The new blisters I got to match the ones on my other foot were making my whole foot sore and stiff. And it rained a lot again!

But…as we saw the distance markers ticking down and as we got our first glimpses of the cathedral, it was like nothing else. What elation! And how overwhelming! We laughed and we cried! We were filled with gratitude for having the health and time and stamina and support to make this journey. We felt like the pilgrim statues at Monte de Gozo, whose pictures I’ll post.

We went to get our compostelas, our certificates of completion. There are about 20 volunteers who ask to see your credentials with the stamps from stops along the way. You fill out a form online as you enter to state your reason for walking. When I got my compostela the nice French woman who helped me said I looked so happy and that I couldn’t stop smiling!

      Arzúa - A Rúa (18,9km)

      22 juli 2023, Spanje ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Juli.

      Day 35: O Pedrouzo

      14 oktober 2022, Spanje ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

Today’s 20 kilometers were up and down green hills, where we were accompanied by what felt like hundreds of pilgrims, including several raucous groups getting an early start on the weekend.

We encountered cattle, tractors, and heavy duty shrub trimming equipment along the Camino today.

We also came upon Scott from Seattle several times over the course of the day. It was fitting, Allan pointed out, to be seeing him now as we near completion of our Camino since he was the first pilgrim we met.

We were thankful that the forecast rain mostly held off; we enjoyed our customary first and second breakfast stops, along with a third stop for a light lunch of white bean soup.

The sun is finally making its presence known as I write in our comfy room at Casa Rural O Acivro.

Tomorrow, we aim to walk the final 21 kilometers into Santiago de Compostela. It’s hard to believe we’re finally almost there.

      Eighth day

      19 april, Spanje ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

      Hola it’s Eloise

Today was a very easy day with only 6 kms to do, the real challenge was making sure we didn’t get to the hotel too early since it opened at 1:30pm .

We saw lots of cool things like flowers and cool creations like a girl made out of flower pots, a statue made out of stuff and a log turned into a flower pot.

Today’s Spanish words of the day are nina (nee-na) which means girl and nino (nee-no) which means boy.

Well thank you for reading and hope you have a good day

      Day 38

      30 september 2022, Spanje ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

I actually did it!!!! .. I’m such a tiny bit proud, mainly that I survived doing it on my own 😂
Today, ironically started off the same as my first day.. damp and misty.. but in between I’ve had, seriously hot sun, thunder, lightning, light rain and heavy rain!!!! All good as it gave a more rounded experience!!!!!
When I set off this morning, at my usual time, it was still dark!!! I think it was due to the heavy cloud and mist.. I have to admit I’m not a big fan if being out in the dark on my own , especially when going through forest areas snd it’s all a bit creepy .. I’m just a wuss I know 😬😂
The walk today was fab.. but to be fair I was in a bit of a high knowing that this was it!! The day I finally reach Santiago!!
I know it sounds daft, but I really did have goosebumps arriving at the Cathedral after all this time and all of these miles.. an emotional experience really…
The biggest challenge after all the emotion , excitement etc., is getting your Compostela., certificate for completion of the Camino… it’s quite a long, but certainly well organised process.. so glad I was an early finisher and ahead of the masses I’m sure arrived this afternoon.. passport complete.. I have my certificate!!!
Obviously an initial drink to celebrate 😂
Surprisingly found my hotel relatively easily, checked in, shower and Nana nap later and it’s off to find some food and a couple more drinks.. I convinced myself that I’d both earned and deserved it 😂😂
I’m so looking forward to going home tomorrow, but ( sentimental as it sounds ) I definitely feel I’ve left a little bit of me out on the trail here and that it will be a journey that I’ll always remember, along with people I’ll never forget..❤️

      Day 6 Camino: 16 miles

      14 oktober 2022, Spanje ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

Our last day of walking! We got up early to try and catch the sunrise and left the inn around 8 with our headlights on. We walked with our Israeli friends and met several people we knew along the route. It was bitter sweet- knowing we have walked so far and that it would soon be over. We savored the day, stopping for lots of photos, drinks, and food. It did start drizzling but not bad. There were a lot more people walking with us as everyone made their way to the Cathedral or Santiago; the traditional end of the Camino. We entered the city of Santiago de Compostela, a large city with a lot of hustle and bustle, traffic and noise. But as we made our way to the Cathedral the streets narrowed and wound their way around like a maze lined with stores, inns, and restaurants. There were many other pilgrims heading in our direction and our excitement grew as we made our way through the streets and alleys.
      To be continued …..

      Day Five Camino: 12.5 miles

      13 oktober 2022, Spanje ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

Luckily the baby in the creepy crib outside our room only cried once last night! 😱😂 We left our palatial manor house around 9:30am and headed to A Rua. We passed several people we recognized from the week and then saw our Israeli sister friends. We walked the rest of the way with them, stopping for lunch but the place was so crowded they ran out of food! The Camino is more crowded now because several of the routes come together in Arzua. Luckily we had packed some ham and cheese from breakfast and some ribs from the night before— of course!! So we had our own little lunch. It was overcast all day and a little drizzly at times which was nice and cool for walking. The Camino was pretty flat today and we walked about 12 1/2 miles. We are staying at a cute hotel in the small town of A Rua and had a delicious dinner and interesting conversation with our new friends from Tel Aviv. Tomorrow is our last walking day. We cannot believe how fast this has gone. We thought the walking would seem long, difficult and endless but it really was very peaceful- even the hills! We talked, pondered life, met new people, and viewed the beautiful countryside. It will be hard to see it end but it will also feel great that we did it!

      Santa Irene

      30 juli 2022, Spanje ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

Our last full day of trekking, 30k, prior to arriving in Santiago, ended in Santa Irene, a small farming community. Our albergue offered a communal dinner, so we got to share a meal with Victoria. from Romania, Peter from Austria, and Silvi from France. We shared experiences of the Camino, the translation of the word snore in 4 different languages, and how we would be feeling upon reaching the end of our journey. I was asked. if I thought I would feel sad when I reached Santiago, completing this adventure. I answered with a resounding No. It is true that s has been a privilege to have had this amazing journey of a lifetime, shared with a wonderful friend, meeting warm and interesting people from around the world, and getting an intimate view of Spain and the varied elements of Spanish culture. It is also true that I have the most wonderful husband, family, and friends in my home community who I love and miss terribly, and can't wait to get home to.!
Love and much gratitude l to the warm and wonderful people of Spain who shared their homes, food, advise, stories, and hearts with this traveler from California. These wonderful memories that you have helped to create will be with me always.❤️
Photos: so many kittens; heading up the Camino for milking; water fonts along the way for pilgrims; the kitchen in our albergue.

      Its The Final Countdown...

      6 oktober 2023, Spanje ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

      Arzua to Lavacolla
      Day 35 - 28km

      It's the final countdown... eeeeeepppp!!!!!
We can hardly believe that we are here, with just 10km to go tomorrow... absolutely surreal to imagine we have come this far. 🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️
Amazing walk today, started in the pitch black with the help of our headlamps... really beautiful through forest tracks, and because we left nice and early, we had a great headstart on the crowds. We walked with our new lovely friend Rikke, from Denmark, and have really connected with her, we are looking forward to sharing the excitement and euphoria of walking into Santiago tomorrow morning 💜
Trevor has just caught up with us tonight, he offered us a ride but we have said yeah.../ nah... not a chance mate, we are going all the way under our own steam...😁😁😍😍

      Day 42-Outeiro/A Calle

      20 oktober 2023, Spanje ⋅ ☀️ 55 °F

We started today's 13 mile walk in a little rain. It was off and on for a few hours but then we got ahead of it and saw blue sky and sun fir the last hour.

We're back to seeing about a dozen pilgrims a day because we are staying in towns that are not designated as the overnight towns in the guidebooks. Tonight, we're at a lovely guesthouse that includes a small café and terrace. When we arrived, there was a lively group of Spanish 20 year olds. They're from different parts of Spain (Madrid, Barcelona, and Málaga) and met on the Camino. When they continued on to their next stop, we realized that we're the only ones staying here tonight.Meer informatie
