      Arcade to Pontevedra

      1 Oktober 2022, Spanyol ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

We had our second hill after Arcade. This was mostly on soft paths through forests, so I enjoyed the climb a lot more.

We stopped at a roadside ‘tienda’ for a chocolate bar. It was well set up, with bales for seats, and a friendly dog.

Entering Pontevedra there is a Complimentario route, which goes along a small stream. It was a bit longer, but was in the shade. It is a very nice path.

Tonight we are living in luxury with a private room for two. With towels and sheets!

      Top of yet another climb!

      3 Juli 2023, Spanyol ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

It’s another pleasant day to walk! Feeling much better today! On the way out of Redondela, we met Andrea from Portland who is also a teacher! 😄 I loved the walk through Arcade… although very hilly! And it’s been a steady climb ever since! Love the shaded trail that goes by creeks and has old Roman road stones still in place! Stopped at the top at a vendor for pilgrims and got a fresh squeezed strawberry lemonade! Letting the feet get some air and then we start a steady descent.Baca selengkapnya

      im Regen nach Pontevedra

      26 April, Spanyol ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Baca selengkapnya

If It’s Saturday It Must Be Ponte Vedra

      15 Oktober 2022, Spanyol ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

Well, I thankfully slept through last night’s hauntings. Because I’m sure they happened! And when I got up this morning and went down to breakfast, my suspicions were confirmed. There was only one place set. I was totally alone in that creepy place. Shivers down my spine!

Today’s walk was fantastic. One of the very best days. The predicted rain held off but it was cloudy which kept things cool. There were lots of pilgrims because Redondela- where I stayed last night- is where all 3 Portuguese caminos come together. So I spent time walking and talking with various groups.
Heather and Alden- an older couple from the states who did the whole French Camino last year. He just had a stent put in his heart so I felt compelled to share with him that I was a recent graduate of EMT school. I think he felt very reassured.😀

Then I walked with my Scottish ladies. They are very enjoyable company.

Then I walked a while with Marta and Madelin- ages 29 and 31 from Portugal. Madelin makes earrings- a thing she started during the pandemic- she markets them on Instagram. Marta is a singer by education but is going back to school to study psychology- having been the beneficiary of several years of therapy herself- the reason many of us enter the field. They both talked about how the rise in popularity of Portugal as a destination for ex pats has affected the native Portuguese and their hopes for prosperity. Ex pats come with all their money and drive the prices up and the low paid Portuguese can’t afford to move out on their own. Both of these women were still at home with their parents. We also talked more about fado singing, as Marta sometimes sings in that style. She agreed with the concept that the more you have lived the more emotive your fado.

Then I stopped and spoke to Kristen from Oregon. Asking her why she chose to walk she said- “I’m not sure. Maybe because I’m 73 and it’s now or never!”

Then it was time to break off on my own. I think I’m a recluse at heart. But it was so great. I listened to Bernstein’s Mass- something I haven’t listened to in at least 30 years. It is such a wonderful piece of music and perfect for setting the mood on this cloudy day. When I ran across Marta and Madelin later I asked Marta if she knew of it. She said, “Yes- I have sung it!” Music. Bringing the world together!😀😀

I’m in Pontevedra tonight in the Parador. Seems to be a happening place. I may even go out and explore after a brief rest.

      Rendondela til Pontevedra

      20 April, Spanyol ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

      Pontevedra!

      3 Juli 2023, Spanyol ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

After 12 miles of walking we arrived in Pontevedra at Nacama Hostel. A nice number of miles, especially considering the hills. Our feet are definitely complaining these days by the time we arrive! So what do we do? Walk around town for another 4 miles! 🫣🤣 We ate lunch so late that dinner is going to be snacks we got from the grocery store!Baca selengkapnya

      Day 10 on the Camino

      8 Oktober 2023, Spanyol ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Started our Thanksgiving Sunday with a fabulous included breakfast at a bakery around the corner from our guest house. The town and bakery was packed with Camino walkers and cyclists as it seems it was the only place open that early in the am. We spent the day walking up and down some steep hills and then through forested and farm areas. Finally saw many vineyards today. And some horses. Sorry no cats today Elizabeth. In the forest we saw several murals painted on old buildings, an underpass and a shed. We also came across a cool area where someone had placed some metal pilgrim statues in front of a covered area with a half dozen straw beds for pilgrims to use. Found a small chapel in a tiny town where we were able to get another stamp. Finally in to Pontevedra and a walk around the historic centre - see the beautiful church - and we finished the night with a fabulous dinner at Kamelia Taberna. If you are ever in Pontevedra I recommend their ensalada with goat cheese. Amazing. Sadly I neglected to take a photo.Baca selengkapnya

      Day 2 - Redondela - Pontevedra

      Kemarin, Spanyol ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Rain. Rain. Rain. Rain. Rain. Rain. Rain. Rain. Rain.

Second day walking and we cracked out more than 20km today, passing the beautiful medieval town of ‘Arcade’ (no 80’s driving machines or pinball tables; sorry!) and on to Pontevedra.

It’s a strange observation that the caminho way seems to bring you utterly horrible ways into towns with the industrial and medium density housing on the edge of the town being underwhelming. However, the centre of town is historic, beautiful and for my post arrival wander around town also … sunny! (We shan’t mention it too loudly, but it would be nice if it stayed!!).

Michaela has booked us into a hostel tonight, and it’s a dorm with 22 people in it tonight for us! It’s kinda lovely sharing camaraderie with follow walkers, and we’ve met some really cool people.. but the queue for the machines is kinda annoying!

So far I’m very impressed though, it’s clean, relatively quiet and very modern!

A longer day tomorrow onwards to Caldas de Reis, which is a spa town, and we have various activities booked to keep spirits high!

      Ciao!

      Day 27/16 Redondela to Pontevedra

      30 Mei 2022, Spanyol ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

Overcast skies, a threat of rain and a temperature of 15 C awaited us as we set out on today's walk.

It was another relatively short walk, (I now consider walks under 20 kms to be short) but it had two very long, and often steep, ascents and descents. For the most part we were in forested areas, which were unspectacular, although there were a few extraordinary vistas from atop the hills.

The other day we were serenaded by a bagpipe duo and today, on a couple of occasions, we were treated to a chorus of bullfrogs singing very loudly.

Our first coffee stop was about 7.5 kms up the road and the second was as at around 15 kms which left only 4 kms over flat ground to bring us to our hotel.

With a little less than an hour to go, the rain finally started to fall, but only enough for us to pop open our umbrellas. A few days ago torrential rains were forecast for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, but that has been constantly changing. With a little luck and the Caminho on our side, we may dodge the bullet tomorrow. Time will tell.

The highlight of the day was dinner at Bodegon Arca, a little Mom and Pop shop run by a larger than life Spaniard and his wife. So enjoyable was his banter we had to take a photo with him.

Our calculations tell us we now have only 66 kms to cover over the next three days to reach Santiago. It's almost inconceivable to think that this journey is rapidly coming to an end.

What can we do for an encore?

      Camino Portuguese Day 11

      2 Oktober 2022, Spanyol ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Last night we had no success finding an evening meal prior to the pilgrim mass. All ‘kitchen cerrado.’ So we ended up at a familiar location.

After church there were many families out walking, scootering, or riding their small cars.

This being our rest day, we started with a walk to the lavandería. No washing facilities at our hostal but it was a good time to wash clothes. Then café and a snack.

Today is the day for ‘En Marcha Contra el Cancer’ in Pontevedra. Had we known, we could have participated in the 6.75 km run/walk and earned a pink shirt. It was nice to see many families out together for the event.
