      Day 5

      September 16, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

A 12 mile walk into the Cathedral of St James today and not bad, few big hills, but gradual. Odd to hear a plane right over head, but Camino goes right past the runway. As Stephanie and I left Santiago for Sarria, we passed pelegrinos walking in. Today that was us. We knew the botafumeiro doesn't swing at every Mass, but lucked out, it did after Mass. Pretty amazing. Eight men manage the pulleys to make it swing towards the side naves. I wish I could load the video, so cool. Look online, I'm sure it's out there or watch "The Way".Read more

      Santiago tourist day

      June 19, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 18 °C

Today was our final day in Santiago and with it the end of our Camino. But we have discovered that the authentic Camino begins when it is completed. We started our day at the Post Office to mail back a box of the Camino gear we will not need for the rest of our trip as well as the clothes we now realise we will not need. I know I will have been successful if by the time I get home, I have worn everything in my case. We then went to English Mass at the Pilgrim Office. A little chapel that was full with people from US, Australia, Scotland, Philippians. The Priest was from Philippians, but now lives in Santiago. He was wonderfully welcoming. For the prayers of the faithful we were all invited to the altar to light a candle and offer a prayer. We said a prayer for all our family and loved ones. There are many English speaking volunteers - religious and ley. They offer an incredible service of retreats and reflection opportunities over tea. After tea we spent some time watching the new pilgrims arriving at the Plaza - always an emotional experience. We couldn’t believe it when we saw a friend from many days ago - when we attended our retreat at the Benedictine Monastery. We spent some time catching up and then headed to lunch where we had a delicious paella. We had our obligatory siesta and a little later headed off for a walking tour of the old town which was a very relaxed and informative walk. We had a light dinner at a vegan cafe, which was a very nice change. Last little bit of packing and admin before our departure tomorrow and then bed zzzz

Tomorrow we are heading to Barcelona for 4 days and then on to Italy. We will post our Camino reflections tomorrow and end this Penguin trip!

      Santiago de Compostela

      April 30 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 50 °F

What an awesome day. This was the first place since Paris that we were able to sleep in one place for more than one night. We awoke to rain, but hey, it's like home. The rain cleared. Lydia helped me with my fear of heights, and then it was a shopping bonanza. Wandering about in the old city. Looking at food, drink, and gifts. It was nice not to walk more than 15 miles. Tomorrow evening, we start the trip homeward - first Madrid, then London and back to the PNW.Read more

Tag 11. Ende oder Anfang ?

      August 24, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Naja, so mittelprächtig.

      Rico

Guten Morgen du schöne Welt 🌍

      May 28, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

      October 15, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

In the ninth century it was claimed that the remains of St James the Greater were found in Compostela. There are many apocryphal tales of St James in Spain so it would not have been odd to have suggested his remains were found there.

From that discovery, Compestela became a centre for pilgrimage and in the 15th Century the pope declared it one of the three great Christian pilgrimages along with Rome and Jerusalem.

Nowadays, between two and four thousand pilgrims arrive each day (except in winter). To qualify as a pilgrim you need to have walked 100km to reach Compestelaand the vast majority of people do just that. You don't have to walk it all in one go and many do it over several years, picking up where they left off each time

At the end you receive a certificate which is known as the 'compostela'. It's written in Latin, including your name!

      A wet Santiago this morning

The Botafumeiro in action at Mass. I learned afterwards that I was extremely lucky to see this. The Botafumeiro is one of the largest incense burners in the world. It gets up to 35mph at full speed!

Day 31 Rest Day in Santiago

      October 22, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

I had a great sleep. It was awesome to just take my time getting up and going
I had a delightful morning chatting with Marissa from New Jersey. She is an artist and I w pmas privileged to see her start a postcard picture first by drawing it and then using watercolour pencil crayons. Absolutely amazing!!!!

I then went out and did some errands I sent 1.76 kg of my stuff home to lighten my pack😉👍

I also had my first churro with a raspberry centre🥰🤗

I toured the cathedral and saw the tomb of St James. "The Door Of Forgiveness" was open so I was able to go behind the sculpture of Jesus.....very cool!
My friend went on the tour of the cathedral on the roof and was terrified. She did get some amazing pictures though. She has a best friend who lives in Spooke. They went to art school togeher.

The sun came out today......that was a great event😎

It is supposed to rain tomorrow Surprise Surprise!!!! I will head out hiking to Muxia which is on the coast. Stacey is there right now for a few days before she heads back to Maine on Wednesday.

I think that is about all for now. I hope I will be able to take a few pictures tomorrow🍀🤞🙏😅

Santiago de Compostela - ohne pilgern

      September 29, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

      May 26, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

Had breakfast and headed to church. Spanish mass with Botafumeiro!
We were in good fortune as it cost 410 pounds for it to swing/fly. We benefited greatly from someone else.
After church the weather has taken a turn with cold & wet.
How blessed are we to have enjoyed 16 straight days of sunshine and perfect weather.

      Mercado de Abastos de Santiago

      May 24, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

We bought marisco (navajas, centolla y zamburiñas) fresh at the market. In another stall on the market they cooked the seafood for us. And because this lady Monica was from Venezuela she didn't mind cooking the fresh pimientos de padrón as well for us. In another stall we bought the chilled albariño wine and so the delicious birthday meal could start on a bench at the market. Many especially pellegrinos that passed us were enviously looking at us on how we were enjoying our festive meal. Happy birthday!!Read more
