Inglesia Santa Maria de la Asuncion

      May 28, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

The church of Santa María de la Asunción located in Viana ( Navarra , Spain ) is a religious building built between 1250 and 1312.
Of course my interest was to find the grave of Cesare Borgia the son of Pope Alexander VI and for all purposes the Machiavellian Prince

César Borgia died during a treacherous ambush, in Viana, on March 12, 1507.
Initially buried in a Sepulcher inside the church in the sixteenth century his remains were dragged out and buried in the plaza before church
later on reburied again at the top platform of the steps to the church with the inscription that you see here

    • Torres del Río to Viana

      September 21, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Today's route was just a short 11km walk to Viana, a smallish city of about 4000 people.

Most pilgrims were pressing on to Logroño, a much bigger place, to catch “La Peña de las Uvas”, the pressing of the grapes. We have a preference for the smaller cities. Likely we’ll have breakfast in Logroño tomorrow on the way through.

It was quite cool when we started walking, about 10C. But sunny and dry and shorts and short sleeved shirt felt great. Perfect weather for walking.

There was a bit of up and down on a good track through grape and olive growing areas; a stop for a coffee and snack in the bush at Casita Lucia. We arrived at Viana at lunchtime. After getting some necessities from the pharmacy, we had a fine lunch of tortilla with ham, and Coke Zero.

At 2pm we checked in to Palácio de Pujadas, which is in fact somewhat palatial. Very comfortable anyway, right on the main street and Camino.

Kevin read that yesterday was World Paella Day and had failed to observe it appropriately so he hopes to make up for that tonight. John will refrain.

On this leg we left Navarra province and crossed into La Rioja. We think that explains the lack of dual Spanish/Basque signage. Perhaps we’ve left Basque territory.

      Day 8 Viana

      April 18 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Olive trees! There are tons here and they make the most tasty oil. We decides not to take a rest day tomorrow so we walked only 18 km today. Checked in just after noon. Tomorrow we plan on 20km. We are just not sure what shape we'll be in if we do the 28km scheduled.Read more

      Day 9 - To Viana

      September 17, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Day 9 - To Viana (Saturday)
      18.4 km; 24°C
      Difficulty – 2/3
Such a beautiful sunrise as I left Los Arcos this morning! I divided the trip to Logrono into two days. I wasn’t quite ready to do a 27.5 km day yet. So I stayed at Viana.
I came upon an interesting site. I don’t know who made it (I assume Pilgrims), why it was done, or what it means. But it’s very interesting that pilgrims would take the time to do it. I’m sure it’s continually added to. Many beautiful views of vineyards today! I came across a bullfighting (bull and matador) courtyard on my way out. It would have been interesting to have caught that event. Very Spanish! And yet another gorgeous cathedral. Pretty much every village, no matter how big or small, has a huge gorgeous historic Catholic Cathedral. I wish I could get into all of them. Especially to light a candle. But most aren’t open when I go through.

      Day 10 - To Logroño

      September 18, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

      Day 10 - To Logroño
      (pr. Lo-gro-nyo) (Sunday)
      10 km; Difficulty 2/3.

So today I made it the rest of the way…from Viana to Logroño. It was a short walk and I arrived at 1030 am, just in time for mass in the gorgeous cathedral…in Spanish 😞 But at least I went.
The “wine festival”, a Mardi Gras of sorts, started in Logroño yesterday and will last for a week. So many people, and so much chaos! I was actually glad to leave.
A couple from Idaho and I were sitting waiting for a restaurant to open for dinner and we met some people from Logrono who spoke English. After some visiting they decided to invite us and cook dinner for us. So wonderful!

    • Day 15

      Los Arcos to Viana

      May 5, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Spain is hillier than I expected!

It has been another day of vineyards and olive groves. I started off early again as it is so pleasant travelling while it is still fresh. This meant I arrived into Viana early and was able to get a pilgrim’s meal (paella, fish, ice cream and wine) before everything closed for the afternoon siesta.

This is the first large dormitory that I have been in - 12 beds (6 bunks) in the one undivided room. At least I have a bottom bunk again.

I spent some of the afternoon wandering around the town. There are so many very old and interesting buildings, I’ve really enjoyed my day here.

Day 8 - To Los Arcos

      September 16, 2022 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

Day 8 - To Los Arcos
      21.6 km; Temp 21-22°C;
      Difficulty rating 2/3.
A sidenote, if you click on the map at the top of my trip and then zoom in you will see each stop I make.

This morning only 3 km out of Estella was an amazing wine fountain!
“Bodegas Irache”. I am well into the wine vineyards now, and I went through more beautiful forest paths today. Notice the yellow arrow on the tree, guiding our way. A church atop a mountain has me wondering why it was built there and how many people actually attend. I was lucky enough to hear the bell ringing from such a vast distance.
The intense walking every day makes me thankful for my water being so accessible; that I don’t have to search/reach for it. Alas I arrived in Los Arcos. It was so quiet!! I guess it was still siesta time. But the guard dog was on duty. There was a really amazing church in Los Arcos where I hoped to attend. But there was no mass yesterday. So I lit candles.

      Stage 9: Viana to Navarrete

      September 22, 2022 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 6 °C

21.8 kms/13.5 miles, 49°-78°, 8 hours. Was a day of contrasts- started off from Viana chipper and optimistic, hit a wall after Logrono and went through the "dim and grismals" for quite a while. Arrived in Navarrete in the heat of the day when everything still closed for siesta. After a shower and rest I reemerged and wandered around the charming little town (love the tiny pocket parks, benches and planters everywhere) and visited the amazing church. I will have to read up on the history of why such a small town has such a sumptuous church. I've never seen so much gold in one place. I saw a few familiar faces. I seem to have fallen into a loose cohort of other slow walkers, we pass each other, nod smile offer an encouraging word or bit of humor. It's a nice mix of familiarity and independence, everyone going at their own pace and doing their own thing. I overcame my usual reserve and invited some folks to join me for dinner- a couple from Longview Washington and a young man from Wales. Had a wonderful meal of Pintxos or tapas, with chocolate mousse and hot tea for dessert. A reward for the difficulties of the day. A relatively easy day tomorrow I hope, "only" 17 kms/10 miles to Najera.Read more
