      Alto del Perdòn

      20 Ağustos 2023, Ispanya ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C

An amazing day today, up and out at 5:30. Who says I can't keep my normal routine 😉
Mind you, I passed a bar with people spilling out of it and others still queuing to get in. Perhaps I'm doing Spain wrong 🤔 Fantastic walk up to the wrought iron monument for medieval pilgrims - "where the way of the wind crosses the way of the stars." Am enjoying this so much! The heat is a killer tho. I'm done by 1:00- walked without booking today- jury out on whether I'll be able to sustain not knowing where I'm sleeping when I start to get tired.
Lessons for the day: look up from the road, look back, the view is amazing, ponytails stick to sweat faces. Short people will never walk as fast as tall people!!

      Really out of the blue

      4 Ağustos 2022, Ispanya ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

A heavy rain shower and thunderstorm started! And our clothes are outside to dry? We all ran down to save them but …Although our hospitaleros washed our clothes, they didn’t hang them - so they are still wet - including my only towel! It doesn’t look like it clears up soon 🙀- so we read and talk to the others… maybe I get a coke somewhere?Okumaya devam et

      Sick in Estella

      26 Eylül 2023, Ispanya ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

Today we walked to Estella but David woke up sick. It was a long, uncomfortable walk! I was so worried about him! Luckily it wasn’t too hot outside. And now, in the evening, David is all bundled in bed taking Spanish DayQuil. I’m about to go get a pizza and bring it back to the room. Tomorrow we’re going to taxi to Los Arcos instead of walking so he can rest.Okumaya devam et

      Day of rest

      6 Ağustos 2023, Ispanya ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

I decided to take a rest day today to give my body and spirit a break. It felt important to give my legs a chance to recover from the physical demands of the Camino and take some time to reflect on my first few days. I explored the old part of Pamplona in the morning and then took a taxi to Puenta la Reina.

One of my goals coming to the Camino was to listen to my body, so I’m glad I heeded the signals to rest rather than feeling an undo sense of obligation to walk every mile. A friend who hiked the Appalachian trail told me they have a motto, “Hike your own hike.” I’m reminding myself to, “Walk my own Camino” and not compare it to others’. It’s humbling to stop when I need to stop even as others are speeding onward. It seems like a good lesson to take with me.

Rest Day in Puente La Reina

      26 Eylül 2023, Ispanya ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

Today was our first rest day. We weren’t sure what a rest day would be like. Would we be bored? Would we miss the walk? How could we force ourselves to be restful when we are always walking around, even at home?

We have four or five rest days scheduled (I can’t remember off the top of my head), and we purposely set it up to take test days in small places with little to do. We knew if we took a rest days in cities we’d be out exploring, defeating the purpose of rest days! And Puente La Reina has maybe 2000 residents? It’s not totally sleepy but not much of a tourist draw.

Today our big objectives were to wash our clothes and to get food for tomorrow. We hand wash and drip dry our clothes and we know bigger items like shirts, leggings, and my hiking dresses take more than one day to dry so rest days are our best shot at getting the wash done. As I write, only one garment has dried! But if they don’t fry we put the damp items in a ziploc and hand them up first thing when we arrive in our next destination.

Tomorrow and for the next four or five days it’s going to be hot. Mid 80°s and no shade. Not bad for sitting but not comfortable for walking really. So we’re leaving early tomorrow. Unfortunately that means we won’t get the nice breakfasts at the places we’re staying, but at least it will be cooler when we do the bulk of the walk! It also doesn’t get light here until after 7:00 am so we decided to try leaving at 7:00 and letting the predawn light guide us rather than walking with a headlamp earlier. We’ll see by tomorrow how it all works out! We bought apples, almonds, and granola bars to eat on the trail and will stop for coffee after 8:00-8:30 when the bars open. A bar is a little cafe that serves light food, coffee, beer, and wine. And bars are open most of the day where restaurants (and the restaurant portion of bars that offer cooked meals) are open sometimes in the early afternoon and then not until after 8 pm or so.

So we went to the churches in town here today, and we walked over and took pictures of the puente (bridge) that the town is named for. And we got fabulous sandwiches for lunch! Toasted baguette split down the middle with chicken breast pieces, caramelized onions, brie, and sautéed mushroom sauce. Yum! We had them with a coke with lemon. Then we took a nap!

Tomorrow we’ve got a 24 km walk to Estella!

      Rocky Mountain High

      7 Eylül 2023, Ispanya ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

      Pamplona to Puente la Reina
      Day 6 - 24km

Early start this morning as it was going to be very hot again today. We set off at 6.30am, after a little hiccup as we had left the poles in our room! 🙄However we managed to break into the lockbox to retrieve the keys. 😏 ( Meghan did it…😅) Walking in the dark for the first hour was nice and seeing the sunrise was a bonus. 🌞
We walked through beautiful countryside, with a steep climb, but we were rewarded with amazing views and the pilgrim statues at the top. Looking back over Pamplona was rewarding.
We were feeling quite smug about ourselves around 10am after walking 10km, but still didn’t arrive until 2pm! It was a hard slog for the final 5 km in the heat. We were very grateful for a nice cold shower, a rest and a beer. Looking forward to exploring the town and a good pilgrims meal. 💕

      2. DAY | 30 km

      30 Nisan 2023, Ispanya ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

      7 Nisan, Ispanya ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

I walked about 15 miles from Pamplona to the medieval city of Puente de la Reina (Queen’s bridge). After another poor night of sleep, it was a difficult start. It seems like every day, I vacillate between wanting to quit and head home and loving the experience. I’m missing home and my pets, the ease of having a kitchen where I can cook whatever I want without having to worry about how I’ll carry any leftovers the next day, air conditioning, etc. When I walked into Puente, I realized that I’d booked the inn room for the wrong night. The staff were so kind and didn’t charge me for the mistake (possibly helped because I wanted to stay for two nights so I could have a rest day).

Walking into my tiny room, I was so happy- a double size bed, ceiling fan, private bathroom! The bed is comfy and the pillows are good. I slept 9 hours that night, then the next day did laundry today and took a 3 hour nap. My feet have been hurting quite a bit. In Pamplona, I bought some new insoles with the hope that they’ll help- I forgot to switch out insoles before leaving for the Camino and the current ones are worn out.

I met a couple of Spaniards while on the Camino. The first night in Puente, they saw me and invited me to join them for a drink. I debated, mostly because I was nervous I wouldn’t understand much, but decided to stay. It ended up being a lot of fun! They were very patient with my Spanish being slower. While I didn’t catch everything they said, I did better than I’d anticipated. Glad I got outside of my comfort zone a bit!

    • Pamplona to Puente la Reina

      17 Eylül 2022, Ispanya ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

After an 8:00am stop for coffee and pain au chocolat at a tiny but busy bakery near our albergue we started the day’s walk through Pamplona city and the beautiful park-like grounds of the University of Navarra.

The route was bisected by the Sierra del Perdón on top of which is a string of wind turbines clearly visible from Pamplona. The climb up was fairly well graded and beautifully scenic, looking out over fallow fields back to Pamplona.

We stopped a bit short of the top in the village of Zariquiegui for a bocadillo and a cold drink outside a beautiful old church. Then on to the summit.

It was very windy up there so we didn’t linger for long. The descent was bloody awful. We dropped 200 meters over a very steep 1.5km long track of loose shifting rocks.

Kevin paused to stop an incipient blister. From there it was a fairly long hot plod to Puente la Reina.

Total for the day was about 24km.

Good 3 course pilgrims’ dinner at our Albergue Apóstol.
