Tag 24 von Sahagún El Burgo de Ranero

      May 25, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Morgen geht's weiter.Read more

      Von ledigos nach sahagun

      May 24, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Hola Amigos y Amigas. Read more

Another spectacular walk - to Sahagun

      May 6 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

We are debating whether this is the best walk so far, but I think the ones with panoramas from high places rate well too! But we have certainly had a wonderful day - 22 kms - 5° and misty when we set off at 8am, and by about 10.30 mist burnt off and it was sunny and perfect for the rest of the day, temperature rose to a comfortable 16° and I shed a fleece layer for the first time I think!

Today’s meseta was undulating all the way and so beautiful with the green fields and wildflowers. Rachel and I identified wheat and barley with some difficulty, the crops look similar, but slightly different greens, and already they have the stems of grain visible, all with variations, and I’m always curious to know which is what. And to my delight I recognised a field as we approach Sahagun where twice before we have seen a man harvesting sunflowers. It is now ploughed and with furrows ready to be sown, so it confirms my theory that the fields everywhere which aren’t waving with grain crops are waiting and ready to be planted with sunflowers.

We also passed, and paused, at the little Ermita about a km before entering Sahagun where we were immortalised by the Google map truck in 2013! It was such a beautiful day, unlike yesterday’s wind and threatening rain, that we took it easy and stopped for refreshments several times, often meeting people we have got to know who stay in the same places…some Americans, Canadians mostly…you get quite festive and it is fun. A couple of women have had bedbug bites which makes me nervous…I haven’t thought about them and all our places seem so good, but of course the best places can get them…so here’s hoping my luck continues!

And we have been so fortunate with the weather - last night it rained soon after we arrived and during the night there was quite a storm, but all gone by morning, except some puddles and muddy patches now and then. We arrived here about 3. This town is the centre of a huge grain area, and when you first see a vista of the town you see an enormous silo towering over everything else, rather than the usual church tower and steeple. So we celebrated with an arrival beer - so sunny and bright that Amr and Rich sported Hawaiian shirts!

      Sunrise at Moratinos

      August 9, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

We left Lédigos before 6am, in the dark, and didn't use the head torch. There were no clouds, and we took a moment to look at the stars. To be honest, they weren't that bright. There was a bit of village light and the first glows of the morning already showing. But I got to see some of the northern constellations, which I'm not at all familiar with, and a couple of meteorites (shooting stars).
Sunrise came when we were ordering breakfast at Moratinos. The 3rd photo, showing a hill with small openings that look like hobbit houses (you may need to enlarge) was across the road from the cafe. We learnt that they are wine cellars! The Spaniards take their wine very seriously!
The other photos show examples of mud walls found in the same town.

      Day 23 - Moratinos

      September 28, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

Very different day, today we made our first big mistake. It was going to be about a 10 mile walk. We stopped in a small town to get our Camino passport stamped and to have a refreshment, our final stop was just under 2 miles away. Well, when we got to the next town we realized we made a big mistake.

Make sure to watch both videos to catch what happened. Overall we walked around 12 miles.

      Day 23-Moratinos

      September 28, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

Well, today was supposed to be a short day, about 9 miles, but it turned into 12 miles due to a minor screw up of mine.

We had a delightful time walking from town to town today, stopping for coffee or a beverage each time. As we arrived in Moratinos for a break, we were surprised by a guy who was doing wax stamps rather than ink ones. We got our stamp and stopped for a snack and a beverage. Then we wandered another mile and a half to the next town, San Nicolás, to spend the night. When we arrived, I checked my phone for the name of our place...Hostal Moratinos...sinking feeling sets in. Why would Hostal Moratinos be in a town a mile and a half away from Moratinos? Uh-oh. A google search later had us walking back to Moratinos to the exact place we stopped for our break. The stamp guy and the hostal owners had a good laugh. Oh well, we added three miles to our Camino. We needed to burn our breakfast calories anyway.Read more

    • Sunday and Monday Long Walking Days

      September 18, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

In the last few days, we have walked about 30 km each day. That is a lot of walking! But the flat terrain of the Meseta makes this doable.

Finding a place to sleep at the end of a long day has been more of a challenge. We have been successful in booking an Albergue two days ahead. But we have noticed since we left Burgos there are many more pilgrims on the trail. Since COVID, quite a few Hostels and Albergues have closed. So the supply of beds isn’t what it used to be. In our planning, we try to decide if we will shoot for our “planned destination” or stop and stay in a town before or after our planned stop.

We get up before the sun and take in beautiful sunrises. Morning on the Camino is my favorite time of the day.

As I have mentioned before, once we reach the town we are staying in, and receive our bed assignment, we shower and wash our clothes. Then it is cocktail time, dinner and bed. I thought you might like to see the luxurious washing facilities we have on the Camino! Trust me, we are happy to have the wash basin and clothesline! It is a plus if they provide clothes pins otherwise I use the large diaper pins I brought! These are essential if it is windy!

Thank you for the prayers! I am still sore from the fall — but improving every day. I am praying for all of you! ✝️💜

      Hobbitt Houses in Moratinos?

      October 15, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

No, the hobbits don't live here!

We saw these little caves built into the hillside in the little town of Moratinos that we passed through.

These little caves are called "bodegas," used in the past for food storage and wine-making. Moratinos is one of several hillside bodega groups visible along the Camino de Santiago trail, part of a wine culture that dates back 2,000 years to the Romans.Read more

      San Nicholas del real Camino

      September 14, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

Well what a day, started off beautiful then ended in rain, we walked 11 miles about half in the rain..... not many pictures today, but thankful for a dry place to rest our heads tonight. Sometimes the path is marked in unique ways. There is a great debate about where the halfway point is... so far 4 towns have been said to be it, well we have traveled through 3 of them and the 4th we will travel through tomorrow.... so posting our half way selfie just as Greg and Tam did. Buen Camino
PS they have fabulous Bocodillas "sandwiches" 👌
