      Heute Stadtrundgang in Valencia. So viel gesehen, ich habe gar nicht mehr alles auf dem Schirm. Über 100 Fotos, die Auswahl wird schwer. Alles in allem gefällt mir die Stadt sehr gut, viel Kultur, viele Cafés und Bars, tolle Gebäude, nicht nur Kirchen sondern auch Türme, historische Börsen, Markthallen, Plätze und und und.

      Day 1

      Jour 1: Trajet + valence

      July 30 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

      Après un réveil matinal aux alentours de 7h30, on se prépare puis go pour l’aéroport. Miracle, on voyage avec Ryanair, pas de retard et trajet sans problème.

      On arrive à Valence et on prend le métro pour se diriger dans notre Airbnb en plein centre ville. L’appartement est au 7ème étage avec une terrasse et il est très grand. On a 3 lits.

      Première étape: trouver un restaurant. Fred trouve un restaurant à Tapas. Il choisit un tapas au porc et des encornets frites. Pour ma part du fromage et des poivrons.
      Grosse surprise concernant les plats de Fred, le porc est en réalité du gras frit, une oreille frite dans l’assiette avec des poils visibles 🤢.
      Heureusement que mes plats étaient là, on se dirige ensuite vers une pâtisserie pour changer.

      Pour cette première journée de visite, on en a profité pour visiter la cathédrale Sainte-Marie de Valence. On a bien exploré la cathédrale et le musée à l’aide des casques audio en français.
      Immense cathédrale dont le style a évolué avec le temps : du gothique au baroque jusqu’à certaines parties achevées au 20eme. Un musée accolé à la cathédrale nous permet de voir des toiles impressionnantes de maîtres Valenciens. Et le clou c’est le graal qu’abrite la cathédrale. Bref une visite enthousiasmante !

      Suite à la visite, nous nous sommes perdues dans les rues pour y faire des achats. En passant dans une rues, une dame nous a photographié sans nous le dire pour nous mettre en page dans un journal factice. Je vous laisse voir ça.

      On rentre se poser un peu car les gens vivent plutôt la nuit et on se réserve un restaurant pour 22h. On teste un bar à vin juste avant et on se dirige vers un restaurant correct. On prends plusieurs tapas histoire de tester les beignets de morue, croquetas et charcuterie. On se réserve la paella pour le lendemain, on va essayer de trouver un restaurant spécialisé.

      Après le restaurant, on cherche un bar lgbt ouvert en vain et on se dirige vers un bar pour boire un cocktail en prévoyant les activités du lendemain.

      Pour demain, on ira dans les plus grandes halles d’Europe qui se trouvent à Valence, on ira visiter les loges de la soie et on terminera avec la cité des sciences et des arts qui comprend le plus grand aquarium d’Europe.      Read more

      Hola mis amigos

      Hola mis amigos, an dieser Stelle wird eine hier völlig neue Reisgruppenkonstellation vorgestellt, aber keine Sorge, auch hier wird nur in der Gegend rumgerannt, extrem viel Kaffee getrunken und ein bis 13 Aperol getrunken - es bleibt alles wie es ist.
      Die Reisgruppe war ab Mittag endlich vollständig und als erster Programmpunkt stand eine Altstadttour an. Anni, die keinen Orientierungssinn hat, übernahm die Führung, aber Google Maps hat das Ding gedeichselt - es ging durch die Markhalle, das Seidenmuseum und auf das Stadttor hoch . Die Altstadt war sehr schön, wie alles hier, es ist eine einzige Frechheit, wie schön hier alles ist.
      Nachdem wir erfolglos versucht haben, irgendein annhembares Bild von uns drei durch einem Passanten machen zu lassen, entschieden wir uns, uns erstmal mit einem Eiskaffee zu beruhigen. Auch hier ist die sprachliche Barriere nicht unerheblich, weswegen wir nicht erklären konnten, was ein Iced Coffee ist. Jedenfalls wurde es ein Job für drei - das gesamte Verkaufspersonal sammelte sich um den Mixer und kippt Eis und Kaffee zusammen. Wir sind uns sehr sicher, dass das Produkt, das wir am Ende in der Hand hielten nicht auf der Karte existierte und es noch nie in diesem Laden hergestellt wurde, aber es war lecker.
      Am späten Nachmittag ging es zurück in unseren Stadtteil Ruzafa und wir bummelten noch etwas durch die Geschäfte, doch nach nicht allzu langer Zeit entschieden wir uns nach Hause zu gehen. Langsam waren wir alle so fertig, dass auch keiner mehr was sagte - 20.000 Schritte waren geschafft und wir geschaffter.
      Nach einer längeren Pause in horizontaler Position, kratzten wir uns zusammen und gingen Tapas essen - es war so unglaublich lecker.
      Abends stapelten wir uns zu dritt in das 1,40 Bett zum Schlafen, es hat was von Sardinen in der Öldose, aber auf wundersame Weise konnten wir alle gut schlafen und hatten genug Platz.      Read more

      Valencia

      In unserem B&B gibt es ein tolles Frühstück. Danach fahren wir mit dem Hop-On-Off Bus gute zwei Stunden durch Valencia. Die blaue Skulptur "Dama Iberica" besteht aus 22.000 Teilen zu 1,8 Kilo = schwere Kunst von Manolo Valdes.
      Leider fängt es an zu regnen und wir bleiben einfach im Bus.
      In der Altstadt steigen wir doch aus und laufen zur Markthalle - ein riesiges Angebot, ein tolles Gebäude. Wir essen zu Mittag in einem schönen Lokal und sehen und das "La Lonja de la Seda" (Seidenbörse) an - ebenfalls sehr lohnenswert. Den Rest des Tages bummeln wir bei Sonnenschein und nehmen einen Absacker in unserem Viertel.      Read more

      We Saw the Holy Grail!

      It is the stuff of legends. The Holy Grail… Several Spaniards have told us that when we get to Valencia, we have to go see the Holy Grail in the big Cathedral. We shouldn’t miss it.

      There are many tales written abut the Holy Grail, the cup believed to have been used by Jesus at the Last Supper. Quite a number of places (about 200) claim to have it in their possession.

      So we went to the huge and highly ornate Cathedral of Valencia, there it was, in its own side chapel, the Holy Grail! At least that is what was claimed. It was hard to believe that this goblet or chalice could indeed be the original Holy Grail. Scholars are not even sure one existed.

      The chalice in Valencia is a finely polished agate cup that archaeologists consider to be of Eastern origin from the years 100 to 50 BC. The finely engraved gold handles and foot, as well as the jewels that decorate the base, were added in medieval times.

      The story is that Saint Peter entrusted it to Saint Lawrence who eventually sent it to his parents in Huesca, in the north of Spain for safekeeping before he was martyred during religious persecution. The Holy Grail was subsequently hidden in different places around Spain for the next 450 years before its final arrival at the Valencia Cathedral in the 15th century as a gift to the king. And it has been there ever since.

      Archaeological studies, historical documents, recent discoveries about the design and the inscription in the base and legends about the Grail, all point to the chalice of Valencia being in the hands of Jesus at the Last Supper.

      Only the top portion is the cup. The base, the jewels and the handles were added in the 11th Century to protect the cup.

      Pope St. John Paul II (1982) and Benedict XVI (2006) have used the chalice and believe that it is the real deal.

      The cathedral is big and quite spectacular with many secrets. Worth visiting with its museum and big watch tower and …the Holy Grail!      Read more

      Market, Cathedral & Sangria

      Back out into the old town of Valencia. Today we were exploring the old food market and Valencia Cathedral. The day was absolutely spectacular, with an insanely blue sky and fluffy white clouds scooting across. Everything seemed particularly colourful.

      First stop was the food market. There was so much variety and colour here, with gigantic capsicums, massive tomatoes, and bright purple eggplant. Butchers, bakers and fishmonger stalls were throughout this stylish building. We sampled some fresh juice, oysters, and some of the Spanish ham and chorizo on fresh bread, yum!

      Finished in the market we crossed the road to the old silk merchants building which we saw on our first night in Valencia. At a cost of only 2 euro to enter, this building was definitely value for money! A beautiful, cool, outdoor square with a fountain and orange trees was central to the complex, while inside the tall stone columns and vaulted ceilings were epic. The upstairs room with its patterned marble floor and intricate wooden ceilings were also spectacular.

      We continued on to Valencia Cathedral. We plugged ourselves into the audio guide which was included with our entry ticket (more places need to do this!) and set about admiring the cathedral's features. Our first Spanish Cathedral so there were definitely a few interesting items of note. Firstly was the range of different architectural styles, from Gothic, to baroque through to Neo classical designs also being represented. Vela got a little bored and tired so sent Nathan off to explore the rest of the treasures.

      The main items of note included; the preserved severed arm of Saint Vincent (patron saint of Valencia), the gigantic golden processional piece, the tombs and foundations uncovered in the crypt beneath the cathedral, and the most spectacular piece being the chalice which Jesus drank from during the last supper. Very cool cathedral.

      Wir hatten Glück und haben einen Parkplatz nur 3 km von der Altstadt entfernt gefunden. Die Altstadt hat uns sehr gut gefallen, besonders die schöne Bar mit den tollen Tapas vor der wir wunderbar gesessen und den Straßenmusikern zugehört haben. Zu Alex Freude sang in der Kathedrale gerade bei unsere Ankunft ein Chor einen Choral.Read more

      .... und schließlich über den Plaza de la Reina zur Kathedrale, die mit ihren drei Teil Gebäuden auch drei architektonische Epochen beinhaltet - mit romantischen gotischen und barocken Elementen.
      Das Ende unserer kleinen Stadtführung war auf dem Plaza de la Virgen, wo Jesus noch einiges über die Wasserwirtschaft in Valencia erzählt hat. Insgesamt sehr interessant; auch wenn ich einige Dinge noch in meinem Reiseführer nachlesen musste um die Zusammenhänge zu verstehen.      Read more

      Had a relaxing day we went into the town and saw a UNESCO activity where people come sit outside the church to discuss the water irrigation however there's nothing to talk about now so they sit for 5 mins then leave. Then had a yummy gelato. Then nearly missed the bus AGAIN to Barcelona due to laziness and bad time management. Then when we got to Barcelona we met the boys friends from their Croatia trip who stayed with us.Read more

      Valencia Tag 1 Kathedrale von Valencia

      Nach einer kurzen Einkehr sind wir in die wunderschöne Kathedrale gegangen.
      In der Kathedrale befindet sich der Heilige Kelch und eines der bedeutendsten Bildwerke der frühen spanischen Renaissance. Der Aufstieg in den Kathedralenturm Miguelete oder die Geschichte der sogenannten „Jungfrau der guten Geburt“ sind weitere interessante Highlights beim Besuch der Kathedrale.
      Auf einem ehemaligen römischen Tempel, der später zur Moschee umgewandelt wurde, entstand Valèncias Kathedrale in einem vorherrschend gotischen Stil, doch sind auch viele Elemente aus verschiedenen Epochen – von der Romanik bis zum Barock – erhalten geblieben.
      Wer Panoramablicke liebt, sollte unbedingt den Kathedralenturm Miguelete erklimmen. Um an die Spitze des Glockenturms zu gelangen, muss man 207 Stufen hinaufsteigen, aber die Mühe lohnt sich, denn von hier aus hat man die wahrscheinlich beste Aussicht der Stadt.      Read more
