      Walking in a winter wonderland

      Steph and I decided to make it early to Central Station in Stockholm yesterday, as we weren't really sure what to expect with the train to Östersund.

      The platform was absolutely packed with people heading north for Christmas and skiing, there was a bit of panic and nervousness as we all crammed on the train when it arrived, anxious to get our luggage sorted before blobbing down in to our seats.

      We ended up being lucky enough to have two free seats next to ours which meant tons of space as we started the slow and steady journey north, and what a gorgeous journey it was!

      Small farm and country houses dotted the side of the tracks with the snow cover ever increasing as we crept towards our final destination.

      5 serene hours later we arrived safely, and with much joy and began exploring this beautiful quaint town, had an outstanding dinner and final bunkered down for the night as the temperature dropped, the lights came on as Östersund prepares to greet Christmas.      Read more

      Day 12

      A 2.5 hour walk in -11c degrees! ❄️⛄🏔️

      December 25, 2022 in Sweden ⋅ ⛅ -11 °C

      Waking up on Christmas Day and Steph and I both felt we wanted to do a big final walk around Frösön.

      We figured out the best we could do was a big walk to a viewing spot and from there head back down to visit the store as we needed some stuff for lunch before heading back to Lilla Lilo Gården, which is the name of our cottage.

      It ended up being a massive 2.5 hour trek in -11c (-18c with wind chill) degrees!

      Although there were parts where I had icicles in my eye lashes and some forming in my beard, it really wasn't bad! Our clothes again proved that it comes down to if you're dressed for the occasion or not, as you'll see in the photos we truly were.

      The views were phenomenal, seeing the frozen lakes and mountains set as a backdrop to the quaint colourful red cottages, barns and farm houses was amazing.

      After making it back home we settled down for a cosy evening of foods and drinks.      Read more

      Day 10

      Still walking in a winter wonderland

      December 23, 2022 in Sweden ⋅ ⛅ -12 °C

      Wow

      Woke up to a gorgeous morning in Östersund, Steph and I took a walk and it was truly breathtaking, not only due to it being around -12 at the time, but because of the gorgeous views that greeted us.

      We spent almost an hour just walking around, in awe of our surroundings before heading back for a cosy "fika" (coffee and treat) in the centre.

      As I write this we've just arrived at the quaint and homely cabin on Frösön, an island outside Östersund where we'll be spending Christmas.

      It's fairytale-like and we've set up for the most cosy of Christmases, but you'll have to wait until tomorrow to see some pictures 🙂😉

      Day 57–58

      Lonely streets to Östersund 🇸🇪

      July 8 in Sweden ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

      Wie soll es auch anders sein - die Richtung wir mal wieder spontan geändert und so führt die Reise heute nicht nord- sondern ostwärts ins Nachbarland, nach Schweden - heja 🇸🇪

      Auf einsamen Strassen, mit freilaufenden kuschligen Rentieren, durch nicht enden wollende Wälder, vorbei an Seen und durch kleine Dörfer geht's nach Östersund. Bekannt als Biathlon-Weltcup Austragungsort 🎯, liegt am See Storsjön und geografisch gesehen ungefähr in der Mitte des Landes.

      Die Stadt selbst haben wir nach einem Bummel als nicht so spannend empfunden aber die Lage am See wertet das Ganze wieder auf. Im Winter ist es wahrscheinlich schon nochmal anders, wenn der See zugefroren und die Loipen gespurt sind ⛸️🎿🛷

      Dem Biathlon-Stadion haben wir selbstverständlich auch eine Besuch abgestattet. War nix los, so konnten wir den Schiessstand genauer unter die Lupe nehmen. Irgendwer hat da dann doch schon sein ganzes Pulver verballert 🔫

      Day 11

      God jul från Frösön!

      Meeeerrrrryyyyy Christmas everyone!

      We've had a absolutely stunning day in our Christmas cottage on Frösön, an island connected with a bridge to Östersund.

      We walked a brisk 25 minutes to the local store and back to get some traditional Swedish Christmas lunch items such as meatballs, sausages, ham etc.

      Once we got back we had a lovely warming cup of Glögg (mauld wine) before going for a short forest walk.

      After that we went back to partake in our Christmas feast, watch the traditional Christmas Donald Duck tv show (a very hard to explain tradition that has about 40 years precedence to it) before exchanging gifts!

      I got two wonderful books and super cute oil lamp that I'd been eyeing up.

      I got Steph some local jewellery which she loved and very cute Swedish tea cup to bring back home too NZ.

      After that we snuggled up with some good Christmas movies and wine.

      Day 13

      Final day in Östersund

      December 26, 2022 in Sweden ⋅ 🌧 1 °C

      Not too much to report on today, we went to Jamtli a very nice open air museum but all the outdoor stuff was closed so we just visited the permanent indoor exhibits and art gallery.

      We went back to the cabin and Steph finally got to create her first snow angel which was great to see, a short snowball fight ensure afterwards, which i won by all accounts (and by all I mean mine).

      Steph's sadly picked up what we hope is just a cold, so we didn't stay long outdoors as she needed to rest before preparing for the evening.

      We cleaned up our cottage for our imminent departure the following morning at 5.15am.

      Just as we had f finished up the power went out on the entire island, luckily we didn't have much left to do, so we just read our books and listened to music before heading to bed!      Read more

      Östersund

      August 9 in Sweden ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

      Östersund hat ca 50.000 Einwohner. Mit dieser Zahl ist die Stadt das Herz der Region Jämtland und die größte Stadt im Inland Nordschwedens. In Deutschland ist sie vor allem wegen ihrer Biathlonwettbewerbe bekannt, die Teil des Weltcups sind.

      Östersund ist geografisch fast der Mittelpunkt Schwedens. Es gibt viel Tourismus in der Stadt, im Winter wie im Sommer. So erklärt sich auch der für einen Ort dieser Größe ungewöhnlich betriebsame Flughafen.

      Die Stadt ist wunderschön an einem See gelegen. Er heißt Storsjön, „der große See“, und gilt als Schwedens fünftgrößter. Der Innenstadt vorgelagert ist die Insel Frösön, auf ihr befinden sich weiter Stadtteile von Östersund.

      Die Stadt besticht durch viele hübsche Holzhäuser und Hinterhöfe mit Cafés, vielen Alleen, Straßenkunst und noch viel mehr Zebrastreifen 😂      Read more

      Stadtrundgang Östersund

      September 28 in Sweden ⋅ ☀️ 7 °C

      Östersund hat 53.000 Einwohner. Mit dieser Bevölkerungszahl ist die Stadt das Herz der Region Jämtland. Östersunds Bedeutung geht aber noch weit über Jämtland hinaus. Die Stadt ist nämlich die größte im Inland Nordschwedens. Die Abstände zu vergleichbar großen Städten sind enorm: Nach Sundsvall sind es 200 km, nach Karlstad 550 km und nach Umeå 400 km. Östersund ist damit das unangefochtene Oberzentrum in einer Landschaft voller Wälder, Berge und Seen. Eine kleine Großstadt halt. In Deutschland ist sie vor allem wegen ihrer Biathlonwettbewerbe bekannt, die Teil des Weltcups sind.Read more

      Tag 5: Östersund

      August 19 in Sweden ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

      Am Morgen bin ich um sieben aufgewacht und es war echt bitter kalt, deswegen schnell noch zwei Schichten angezogen und nochmal bis um acht geschlafen. Dann gefrühstückt und alles zusammengepackt und ausgecheckt. Vorher war noch ein deutsches Ehepaar neugierig und wollte wissen, wie ich denn in dem Auto schlafe, nachdem ich ihnen das gezeigt habe und erklärt habe, dass ich keine zwei Wochen im Sitzen schlafe, bin ich fast 4 Stunden nach Östersund gefahren. Unterwegs natürlich mit Pausen, musste ich auch mal tanken und so habe ich für 1.51 Euro pro Liter erstmal vollgetankt. Bei einem Verbrauch von 3.9 - 4.2 Liter pro 100km kommt man hier immer ein gutes Stück voran. 14 Uhr bin ich dann in Östersund direkt am Biathlon Stadion angekommen, habe mich dort erstmal bisschen umgeschaut und bin dann weiter zum großen Maxi Einkaufscenter, um etwas zu Essen zu holen. Dann habe ich mich dort auf einen Parkplatz für Wohnmobile (24h) gestellt und die Inliner angeschnallt und erstmal eine Runde auf der Biathlon Strecke gedreht. Leider bei nicht so optimale Bedingungen nach Starkregen 30 Minuten vorher, aber dennoch machbar. 18 Uhr bin ich dann nochmal runter ins Centrum ans Wasser gelaufen. Dann gibt es nur noch was zu Essen und dann die Planung der weiteren Tage.Read more

      Oh nein - ein Knöllchen👮🚨 😯🙄🥹

      Heute ist es passiert, nur kurz im Parkverbot vor der Zoohandlung gehalten und schon kam die Rechnung. Hierbei wurden wir auch gleich noch aufgeklärt, dass das Parken außerhalb der Markierung (was mit dem Womo unweigerlich meist der Fall ist) genauso teuer ist 🫣 In dem Wissen, dass wir so oder so abgestraft worden wären, nehmen wir es etwas leichter und widmen uns der Suche nach einem See zum Kajakfahren.Read more
