      San Francesco

      February 9 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

Burning Bridges and a Dying Lion

      September 16, 2023 in Switzerland ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Booking a hotel online with no previous knowledge is not my favourite pastime. Too many things can go wrong and occasionally they have. Add to that the financial outlay required for a night in a Swiss hotel and the pressure really is on. The Gasthaus Zur Weldegg however was an excellent choice. Located in Horw, a quiet suburb of Lucerne and at the foot of Mt. Pilatus, it is within a 5 min train ride of the city. The room is modern, spacious, air conditioned and very comfortable and breakfast is included.

There is a sweet spot with hotel breakfasts that I rarely achieve. Having my usual light breakfast isn't an option as it represents such poor value for money. On the other end of the scale is to eat so much that you don't need to shell out for lunch and somewhere in between is eating more than usual, but not so much that you feel sick all morning and can't contemplate lunch anyway. It is fair to say that the sweet spot was missed today.

The weather was kind to us and we had a gentle 4 mile stroll along the lakeside, punctuated by a number of stops on shaded benches to bemoan the level of breakfast consumption. Of the available tourist sites, we selected Lucerne's famous Chapel Bridge, constructed of wood and dating back to the 17th century (or 1993 if you take into account the fire that destroyed about ⅔ of the structure). The bridge has been fully restored and does look splendid.

Our other must see was Lion Monument, or the Lion of Lucerne, a 10 meter by 6 meter relief of a dying lion carved into the rock face. The sculpture, said to be one of the saddest monuments in the world, dates from 1821 and commemorates the 600 or so Swiss Guards massacred while defending the French king during the French Revolution.

Like a lot of picturesque Swiss cities, Lucerne is situated beside a lake and surrounded by low mountains, or high hills. I have to confess to spending too much time on Google trying to figure out when a hill becomes a mountain. There appears to be no unique global consensus although there are broad alignments between countries around 2000 to 2500 feet. Having been married for 43 years I have a much clearer grasp of when a molehill becomes a mountain....

      Luzern

      April 23, 2023 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

      Luzern

      May 19, 2023 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Read more

      Exploring Lucerne

      August 3, 2023 in Switzerland ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

A really quiet start to the day. There is plenty of upsides to staying in one place for 3 nights, however one downside is things can get a bit untidy. So after a sleep in and a bit of a tidy up we got to breakfast at 9.30.

Lucerne is certainly not cheap. We are staying in a tourist hotel which is very comfortable but basic. So whilst the breakfast is not particularly cheap it is a good way to fill up for the day and not to have to worry about lunch.

We spent the day looking around Lucerne and the old city. It reminds us a lot of Queenstown and Wellington in New Zealand but just on a bigger scale.

We had a 'cultural' eye opener. There has been a notable number of police officers around. For the first couple of days we just assumed this was normal as the city feels really safe to walk around. However this morning a lot more of them were wearing body armour.

We discovered that tonight Lucerne were playing a Swedish team in football and this soon become evident as the pubs along the riverbank got louder and louder as the day went on. By the time we finished our wanderings at 7pm the police were fully armed with shields and weapons etc as there were masses of very 'vocal and happy' Stockholm fans everywhere. When we stopped to ask if it was safe to walk back to our hotel the reply was 'at the moment yes...'. As we walked back we passed masses of Lucerne fans so we suspect we may be staying near the stadium. So that put an end to our plans to go back into the city later on and we ended up having dinner at the same place as the first night.

We are not sure what happened at midnight. It was possibly fireworks, given that Lucerne won the game and the two-legged tie, but given how well prepared the police were and the previous history of rioting football fans, it could have also been those heavily armed police using their resources to disperse the fans...we will never know.

I'd loved to have got a pic or two of the armed police. However the officer I spoke to, whilst polite, had a very steely look in her eyes and she certainly was not to be messed with!!

      Switzerland

      October 8, 2023 in Switzerland ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

After breakfast onboard the ship we were off to Lucerne for our last two nights. On the way we spent a few hours enjoying Mount Pilatus. We took a gondola part way and then a cable car to top where there are restaurants and 2 hotels. Beautiful views in every direction. We rode the steepest cogwheel railway in the world down to meet our bus and continue our way to Lucerne. No planned group activities so we explored on our own. Walked around old town and had dinner at an Italian restaurant. Some of the best pizza I've ever had. Next day we took a hour boat ride around the lake. Beautiful day. I'm writing this from the Zurich airport waiting for our flight to Amsterdam and then Seattle. It's been a wonderful trip.Read more

      Luzern am Vierwaldstättersee

      October 3, 2019 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

      Lucerne, Interlaken, Grindelwald Alps!

      August 2, 2023 in Switzerland ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

We drove from Zurich to Interlaken. Stopped in Lucerne on our way there, had Greek lunch next to the Rhuess river, outlet from lake Lucerne. Interlaken is a beautiful (and expensive!) mountain city between two lakes. From our hotel you can see the top of Junqfrau. We drove up to Grindelwald, hiked up from town from the train station. Beausite hotel was nice, super attentive staff and a lovely breakfast. Had a tasty dinner that night trout and fondue.. delicious!Read more
