    Munich, day 1

    July 28, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

Munich bike ride to see Nymphenberg palace, and Residenzmuseum. Rented bikes at Radius, rode to Nymphenberg, then to Residenz, then to eat at Little Asia on Nympenberger St ...delicious Thai food, reasonably priced too! returned bikes and walked back to hotel
    More detail...
We are staying at the Bavarian boutique hotel. The breakfast is really phenomenal. Kept us going most of the day. Radius bikes opened at 9:00 so we got there shortly after. It is at the central train station. Train station also a good place to exchange dollars for euros.. go to the north side of the trains and go down the stairs near Starbucks to exchange $. It took 30 minutes to ride the bikes from the train station to Nymphenberg. Front desk person at our hotel recommendation and she was not wrong. We fell in love with the carriage house Marstallmuseum and spent a fair bit of time in there. I loved all of the sleighs! Even if that's the only thing you see there, it is worth it. It then took us 30 minutes then to ride our bikes to Residenz museum. Before going in we noticed a church across the street, Saint Kajetan and went in and walked around quietly . Really unbelievable. I have never seen so much intricate plaster work. The church is enormous and so beautiful. It is very hard to find the main entrance to Residenzemuseum. At main entrance you will find the Treasury. Don't miss this. The jewels and diamonds in the crowns and the decoration for the horses are unbelievable.
Also, the theater is a must see but it is hard to find. You leave the main entrance walk back out to the street. Go north to the Lions and then take a right and walk to a big courtyard and look left and above a door it says theater but it is not super obvious. Make your way to the theater that will also blow your mind. We did not make it into all of the buildings and we may go back tomorrow. We were starving and biked to Asian restaurant
After eating we returned the bikes around 5:00 but we could have kept them until 8:00 p.m. The guy that rented us the bikes is an exact doppelganger for our nephew Timmy.
We enjoyed seeing the trains and all of the people coming and going in the station. We want back towards our hotel and stopped in a couple of stores and came upon another beautiful cathedral St. Paul.
We ate Pizza, salad and a yummy chocolate cream puff dessert at Taormina a 2 min walk from our hotel. Excellent. Service was great too.

    Munich day 2

    July 29, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

Had a wonderful breakfast buffet @ Bavarian Boutique Hotel. Really great spread. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Wonderful location, half a block from where Octoberfest is held each year . Great service from the friendly and accommodating staff, comfortable bed. We visited two museums in the art district. The first was classical art with the most Ruben's and Rembrandts we have ever seen. The 2nd was
contemporary art. Then we drove the car over to Marianplatz and parked in the parking lot for the Hofbraughhouse. We enjoyed the mass chaos and the brass band for a bit and of course we had a huge pretzel and a Prost with our beer. There was a lot of beer going down here! We checked out the glockenspiel tower and then we wandered around looking for dinner and ended up at Madame Chutney Indian restaurant which we did not care for unfortunately. They were very busy and our food was way too spicy.
We cooled that off with a mango lassie and headed back to our hotel. Slept like a rock.

Drive from Munich to near Zurich

    July 30, 2023 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

Drive from Munich to near Zurich took about 5 hrs with stops along the way..Greg enjoyed diving on the Autobahn for the first time even though Thomas gave him a hard time for the rather slow speed he hit. We are staying with our friend Thomas. We ate a fun fondue type meal called Raclette with Thomas 1 and Thomas 2. Raclette cheese, spices, sausages and condiments. Very good!Read more

Zurich over Klausen pass to Lucerne

    July 31, 2023 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

Unbelievable mountain scenery, really! Did not even look real it was so amazing. Greg drove our manual transmission rental (not recommended here) He did a great job but he was going way to slow on the switchbacks for the swiss cars and motorcycles! Klausen pass was worth the trek. Enjoyed "Kabob" in Lucerne, shopped and went to the Jesuit cathedral, gorgeous and crossed the historic bridge Kapell that once burned and you can see the burn marks as well as original craftsmanship. Lucerne is so beautiful! Next we went to Rapersville and walked around a castle from the 1300s alongside lake Zurich. Then returned to Zurich where Thomas 2 served us a wonderful pasta with chicken and mushroom dinner.Read more

    Swiss Holiday August 1st

    August 1, 2023 in Switzerland ⋅ 🌧 57 °F

Today was the Celebration of Switzerland becoming a country. Most businesses were closed so we went to Santis Mountain to ride the tram to the top. The weather wasn't the best and wind was about 66 mph at one point at the top. Steepest tram I've ever taken. We had a great time! Thomas 2 (Thomas's roommate) was our driver....a bit of a wild ride on twisty mountain roads, beautiful scenery again! We ate a delicious traditional Swiss soup made with barley and drank hot plum schnapps at the top of the mountain. In the evening the sun came out and we went to Zurich to take in the night life. We walked through the old and new parts of the city downtown. Great sunset, drinks and later fireworks over the lake.Read more

    Lucerne, Interlaken, Grindelwald Alps!

    August 2, 2023 in Switzerland ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

We drove from Zurich to Interlaken. Stopped in Lucerne on our way there, had Greek lunch next to the Rhuess river, outlet from lake Lucerne. Interlaken is a beautiful (and expensive!) mountain city between two lakes. From our hotel you can see the top of Junqfrau. We drove up to Grindelwald, hiked up from town from the train station. Beausite hotel was nice, super attentive staff and a lovely breakfast. Had a tasty dinner that night trout and fondue.. delicious!Read more

    Grindelwald Swiss Alps hike

    August 3, 2023 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 72 °F

We drove back up to Grindelwald and took the tram up to Mannlichen. Unbelievably beautiful views of the Swiss Alps! Really, it does not even look real! We hiked for about 3 and 1/2 hours from the tram over to the cog rail station. The pictures are the best way to describe the amazing scenery. Towards the end it was a steep down to the tram but otherwise a pretty easy hike and we just took our time and enjoyed sack lunch on the trail.. Greg helped motor us along by bringing Lindt chocolate. Swiss chocolate in the Swiss Alps!!
Found our pizza for dinner in interlachen and then we headed over to Lucerne, about 1 hr drive through a beautiful mountain pass with hair pin turns and switch backs. I got a laugh out of one of them. I will post the Google map. We figured it was too far to drive back to Garmisch at that point and we were too pooped. Good call, it was 9 PM and dark by the time we arrived at Lucerne and we grabbed a hotel downtown that is 186 years old!. It's right across from the old city wall.

Ehrenberg castle on our way to Garmisch!

    August 4, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 70 °F

We happened upon this delightful castle in Austria on our way to Garmisch. There are two castles now connected by suspension bridge. Dates back to 1200s and 1482. We hiked up to the castle then the bridge,,. Bridge is the world's longest pedestrian suspension bridge, 360 ft up from HYW. We just HAD to walk across it and man did it make my butt pucker! I can go all kinds of speed on the ground but that kind of a drop is a different story! In the middle it was shaking from the foot traffic and I was really wondering what I had done to myself...kept saying just keep walking! Lol, going back was better. Made it to Garmish, checked in to hotel Garmi Brunnthaler, at suggestion of the front desk we went to Floberstube restaurant for dinner, Greg had Wenerschnitzel and I had venison and it was excellent.Read more

  • Day 11

    Neuswanstien castle, Garmisch

    August 6, 2023 in Germany ⋅ 🌧 57 °F

We stayed at Hotel Garni Brunnthaler. We had a larger room because we accidentally ordered a baby bed when we thought we were reserving parking lol! Got up early and left the hotel before breakfast so we could get to Neuschwanstein Castle for our tour reservation. It was pouring cats and dogs pretty much all morning and continued through the day and it had also rained all night. Now we know why everything is so intensely green. King Ludwig never completed this castle and only lived there for 170 days. He was arrested in his bed chamber and found dead in the lake the next day. Apparently at that point in time he was not a popular King! Most likely this was due to his excessive expenditures on this castle and his plans for future extravagant spending on this castle as well as others he had planned to build. The parts of the castle that we saw were quite fantastic and over the top. Interesting blend of different styles. We enjoyed the tour and especially seeing the huge kitchen area.. location is fantastic and the castle has its very own private view of a massive waterfall.
We enjoyed walking through a historic part of Garmisch with many murals and beautiful and historic homes. We took the rest of the day to drive to Salzburg and stopped at a McDonald's about halfway there. McDonald's is at a whole different level here. They had a whole barista coffee bar with pastries and the restaurant was two story... Very fancy McDonalds!

  • Day 12

    Salzburg

    August 7, 2023 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

We lucked out on our hotel and ended up with a very cool apartment on the top floor at Das Grune. It was about 20 min walk to the platz. We first went to Mirabelle gardens where they filmed the Do-Re-Mi scene for the Sound of Music. Inside the palace it is decorated extravagantly with many marble statues on a staircase, and a very nice music room with gold embellishments on the ceiling and walls. We found the Pegasus fountain outside Mirabelle gardens. Next we went to St. Andra church. We then went to Kapuziner Koster, which was on top of a hill and started by a monk monastery. Quite a climb. Next we went to Saint Sebastian Church which was also impressive. We had a good lunch at Alter Fuchs which means old fox. Greg had the farmer's soup and Kristy had cordon bleu...both very good.. after lunch we went to St. Johannes Church and the Residence Platz where there is a very large impressive fountain We then went into the Dom Salzburg Church. You have to pay €5 to get in, but it's worth every cent. It is a baroque architecture. Highly decorated and impressive church. Next to it is the Franciscan church that was started around 1100 AD. We then walked back to our hotel room. Greg walked across the street and got a couple of pizzas at a place called Pizza Joy. Lol...It was joyful for the owner because they gave us a tablespoon of tomato sauce and three shreds of cheese. It's true. It was a good day. Tired feet. Slept well!Read more
