      The Causeway Coastal Route

      Today turned out to be our most beautiful weather so far in Ireland and we were able to make the most of it. Three days in a row with no rain - the locals are declaring this as some sort of record!

      Our first destination was the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge which was first built in 1775 by the salmon fishermen to access the little island off the coast where they lived and caught their fish.
      The original single rope has been replaced and maintained by the National Parks, and you need to book a time for your crossing. I had done this some months ago and booked the first slot of the day at 9am which was great as there were very few others there and no coach loads of tourists had arrived yet. And it was a beautiful, calm morning.
      The coastal scenery was spectacular and the rope bridge crossing was enjoyable - it really gets a bounce up as you walk. However, we did notice that there were a few others who had acrophobia and couldn’t bring themselves to cross the bridge, even though they had paid for it all.
      Next stop along the Coastal Causeway route was Ballintoy Harbour - a beautiful little village set around a tiny harbour. For the first time on this trip we saw significant ocean swells rolling in which were crashing against the basalt rocks in a spectacular way.

      After strolling around the harbour and foreshore area for a while, we headed off a few more km to the west for the Giant’s Causeway which is an amazing, naturally occurring cluster of hexagonal basalt columns formed from the cooling and shrinking lava flows. It is a really unusual natural phenomenon, attracts vast numbers of visitors and has been classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
      A brisk 10 minute walk from the visitor car park to the actual site on a bright, clear day was great - but the sight of hundreds of other tourists was not so welcome. This is the busiest (natural beauty) place we have visited in Ireland so far.
      We also discovered that it wasn’t necessary to again pay an exorbitant entrance fee and parking through the National Parks visitor centre. The Hotel right next to the visitor centre offered parking for £10, free access to the site AND £10 off any food or drink you ordered on return. To me, that was a ‘no-brainer’ and we certainly availed ourselves of this option.

      Next up were a few interesting viewpoints further along the coast - the Maghearacross lookout; the Portrush and Whiterocks beach (which is the seaside holiday town of this part of Northern Ireland); We drove onto the beach and did a little 4WDing in our 2WD vehicle on the sand; the Gotmore scenic viewpoint - and then a direct drive into Londonderry - (or Derry, depending on your point of view).

      After briefly checking in to our accommodation we headed into town to spend a little while ‘experiencing’ Londonderry. The evidence of the divisive, violent past is everywhere around you and is placarded for all to see. We then did a full circumnavigation of the old city walls (built in the early 1600’s) before heading back to our accommodation via Lidl for some groceries.      Okumaya devam et

      Giant's Causeway

      Große Begeisterung heute morgen, wir konnten im warmen sitzen und frühstücken, während vor dem Fenster der Regen prasselt. Da das Wetter den ganzen Tag so bleiben sollte, hatten wir überlegt vielleicht lieber ein Museum zu besuchen. Das nächste was uns interessiert hätte wäre allerdings in Belfast, und auch wenn das nicht so wahnsinnig weit weg ist, fanden wir das irgendwie doof.
      Auf gut Glück sind wir dann erstmal zu den "Dark Hedges" gefahren, die Allee mit Buchen aus dem 18. Jahrhundert ist seit der Serie "Game of Thrones" berühmt. Wir waren früh genug dort und konnten Bilder machen bevor der erste Reisebus angekommen ist. (Wir konnten auch noch direkt an der Straße parken und konnten so 8£ für den Parkplatz sparen.)
      Da es inzwischen etwas aufgeklart war, haben wir unser Glück nochmal am "Giant's Causeway" versucht. Freie Parkplätze gab es, sollten aber 10£ kosten. Statt dort zu parken sind wir zurück nach Bushmills gefahren, haben an der Haltestelle der alten Bahn geparkt (kostenlos) und (wegen Regen) auch mit dem Zug gefahren. (Es gibt von der Station aus aber auch einen Fußweg an den Gleisen entlang.)
      Der "Giant's Causeway" (oder Straße der Riesen) ist ein etwa 5km langer Weg aus Basaltsäulen, der an der Küste entlang führt.

      Natürlich gibt es eine irische Legende zur Entstehung:
      Der Riese Fionn McCumhaill aus Irland hatte Streit mit dem schottischen Riesen Benandonner. Um den Schotten in einem Duell zu besiegen baute er einen Damm nach Schottland. Als er aber Benandonner auf dem Damm sah, erschrak er über die Größe und befürchtete eine Niederlage. Die Frau von McCumhaill verkleidete ihn daraufhin schnell als Baby, sodass nun Benandonner einen Schreck bekam. Wenn das Baby schon so groß ist, wie groß ist dann erst der Vater? So rannte er schnell zurück nach Schottland und zerstörte den Damm, damit er nicht verfolgt wird.

      Auch am Giant's Causeway hatten wir heute Glück, es war noch nicht so voll, die Reisebusse kamen erst später, als wir auf dem Rückweg waren.

      Wenn wir schon in Bushmills sind, müssen wir natürlich auch die Whiskey Brennerei besuchen. Für eine Führung war es inzwischen zu spät, aber probieren konnten wir noch. Unser Fazit: Wir geben unser Geld lieber für Port aus (oder müssen vielleicht in Schottland weiter testen)!      Okumaya devam et

      Giants Causeaway

      Prayer update: Isabella is out of the hospital! I think everyone is feeling good besides some small colds.

      It’s crazy to think we only have 1 more week in Ireland! Next Friday we travel to London. I’m super excited to go to London. It’s the only place on this trip I’ve been before and I’m really excited to go back. It is a bit sad though, I’m really loving my time here. It is peaceful, quiet, and beautiful. I’m for sure excited to get to a bigger city with more things to do, but we have found lots of fun things to do here in Rostrevor. It’s really special to get to know the people on my trip very well since we spend pretty much every moment together. And I’m glad we’ve been able to do this here in a small town before we go to bigger cities. I also have loved learning about the history of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. I’m excited to share all I’ve learned!
      The pictures I posted here are from our trip to Giants Causeaway on Tuesday. It’s at the northern most part of Northern Ireland and is right on the water. It was formed from volcanic eruptions and made polygonal columns of basalt. It was beautiful. And the weather was perfect. Sarah and I also left the group for a minute to go try to find the cows and that’s when we found the beautiful open fields. Love that everything is so green here!      Okumaya devam et

      Sligo - Derry - Giants Causeway- Belfast

      We left Sligo at 9am today to travel to Derry. It poured rain most of the way.

      Derry is the second-largest city in Northern Ireland.

      A quick walk around and some morning tea and back on the road to The Giants Causeway. The rain had gone by the time we arrived there and the sun was out.

      The Giant's Causeway is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic fissure eruption.

      It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986.

      The tops of the columns form stepping stones that lead from the cliff foot and disappear under the sea. Most of the columns are hexagonal, although some have four, five, seven, or eight sides.[7] The tallest are about 12 metres (39 ft) high, and the solidified lava in the cliffs is 28 metres (92 ft) thick in places.

      This was amazing to see.

      After a couple of hours we left Giants Causeway and headed for our hotel in Belfast where will again have dinner with our travelling group.

      Giant's Causeway

      Der Giant’s Causeway ist seit 1986 UNESCO-Welterbestätte. Er besteht aus etwa 40.000 gleichmäßig geformten Basaltsäulen, deren Alter etwa 60 Millionen Jahre beträgt. Etwa die Hälfte der Säulen hat einen sechseckigen Querschnitt, es treten jedoch auch solche mit vier, fünf, sieben oder acht Ecken auf. Die größten der Steinsäulen haben eine Höhe von zwölf Metern. Die Gesteinsschicht ist bis zu 25 m dick. Der Giant’s Causeway führt etwa fünf Kilometer entlang der Klippen und endet im Meer, wovon er wieder – der alten Legende von Fionn mac Cumhaill zufolge – an der schottischen Küste als Fingal’s Cave auftaucht. Okumaya devam et

      The Giants Causeway

      This morning, we headed down the Atlantic Ocean coast through Ballysally, Bushmills and Portrush (and the golf course, home of the 2019 Open Championship) and on to the incredible Giants Causeway. Once again, we were blessed with great weather.

      Along the way, we passed the ruins of Dunluce Castle, which was used as Castle Greyjoy, in Game of Thrones.

      The Giants Causeway has to be seen to be believed, but is simply spectacular.

      It was then back to Londondonderry and from there we headed into Ireland, although for the next few days we will criss-cross between the two countries.      Okumaya devam et

      Es grünt so grün

      Das Ziel war noch unklar, als wir aus Bangor am frühen Nachmittag auslaufen, um zur Nordspitze Irlands oder zur vorgelagerten Insel Rathlin Island fahren. Zumal kein Wind war und ein weiterer Angelstop verpflichtend eingeplant war. Vielleicht ankern wir auch noch mal, wenn es mit einer Tide nicht klappt. Wir haben oben mit viel Strom und wohl auch Overfalls zu rechnen, also wollen wir uns einen Rückweg offen halten. Aber es ging flott voran, so dass wir bald unsere Ruten schwingen konnten. Was bitte war das? Nach stundenlang erfolglosen Schleppangeln konnten wir den Köder hier nicht einmal auf den Grund bringen, ohne dass zwei drei Makrelen schon zappelten. In 20 min fischten wir, weil angeln kann man das nicht mehr nennen, 30 Makrelen aus der irischen See. Die nächsten Tage werden wohl der Omega 3 Fettsäuren overkill …

      Es sind die letzten Meilen entlang der irischen Ostküste und es ist wie im Bilderbuch. Wenn ich an die vielen kahlen verbrannten Felsen im Mittelmeer denke, dann ist es hier oben einfach nur grün und farbenfroh. Und 15 Grad sind uns auch lieber als das doppelte..

      Die ersten Stromschnellen spüren wir, und nun kam doch noch Wind. Landen wir am Kap in einer der berüchtigten Strom-gegen-Wind Situation? Naja, wir könnten immer noch umkehren. Es sind aber keine echten Overfalls oder Races (Stellen, wo die Strömung und Winde das Meer auf Waschmaschine stellen wo man nicht rein will) zu sehen, wir haben auch unser Timing wieder perfekt in die Gezeit gelegt. Unterwegs haben wir noch Micha Holzens Reise nachgehört (radiolabor.com), die uns immer wertvolle Tipps gab und alle dort schwärmten von Rathlin Island. Also wird Bally Castle gestrichen und wir freuen uns aufs Island mit 150 Bewohnern.

      Was soll man sagen, die Wahl war gut. Abends im einzigen Pub trifft man die Segler und Einheimischen und kommt ins Gespräch. Und heute morgen gehts mit dem Bus zum westlichsten Punkt unserer Reise dem Leuchtturm am Westkap. Landschaft und Tierwelt sind atemberaubend und Luca übersteht den 7,6 km Trail zu Fuß.. Nur die Robben lassen sich nicht da blicken, wo sie eigentlich rumliegen sollten. Wir trösten uns mit 5 Makrelen vom Grill, es lindert den Schmerz, wenn man mit Rotwein ablöscht.. Mal sehen wie der Abend im Pub heute noch wird, nachdem wir wohl Abschied nehmen werdenvon diesem tollen irren Land. Auch hier stehen noch Palmen in den Vorgärten…      Okumaya devam et

      Dunseverick Castle

      Nach dem Regen ist vor dem Regen ☔️
      Unser heutiger Morgenspot war ganz toll. Nur aus dem Bett fallen und schon waren wir da. Leider hat es wie aus Kübeln geschüttet, aber für einen kurzen Moment hat es aufgehört und die Sonne fand eine kleine Lücke zwischen den Wolken. Es blieb uns eine kurze Zeit um ein paar schöne Fotos zu machen, bis dann der nordirische Gott den Wasserhahn wieder aufgedreht hat.
      Jetzt ist einmal Kleider trocknen angesagt 🔥, meine Schuhe aber brauchen wohl ein paar Tage bis sie wieder trocken sind 😅      Okumaya devam et

      Luxus-Leben

      Nach 5 ½ Monaten im Zelt schlafen, gönnen wir uns ein wenig Luxus und sind für die nächsten zwei Nächte in einem Bed&Breakfast gut versorgt.
      Den Tag über haben wir auf der Causeway Coastel Route verbracht, der Küstenstraße von Nordirland.
      In Portstewart haben wir einen kurzen Mittagsspaziergang eingelegt, ein wenig ärgerlich, denn bei der Weiterfahrt konnten wir sehen, dass Portrush (direkt nebenan) eigentlich hübscher ist. Allerdings auch voller und parken (mit Anhänger) eher schwierig.
      Die Ruine von Dunluce Castle haben wir uns nur vom Aussichtspunkt angesehen, inzwischen hatte es aufgeklart und wir konnten das grüne Gras endlich wieder leuchten sehen.
      Der nächste Stopp sollte eigentlich am Giant Causeway sein, aber der Parkplatz war schon voll, also sind wir erstmal vorbei gefahren, wir sind ja noch etwas in der Gegend.
      Nächster Punkt war die die kleine Insel Carrick-a-Rede, zu der man nur über eine Hängebrücke kommt. Eine erste Brücke wurde 1755 gebaut, damit die Fischer direkt vor der kleinen Insel ihre Netze auswerfen konnten. Inzwischen wurde die Brücke erneuert, aber es ist trotzdem eine wackelige Angelegenheit, besonders bei Wind. Da Jörg ein wenig Höhenangst hat habe ich mich alleine auf den Weg gemacht. Viele Stufen nach unten, kurz vor der Brücke mussten alle warten, erst durften die Leute von der Insel zurück aufs Festland gehen. Die Insel selber ist wirklich klein, aber man hat eine tolle Aussicht, die hätte man allerdings auch vom Festland. Eigentlich könnte man sich das Geld also sparen und einen Spaziergang an den Klippen entlang machen. (Hat aber trotzdem Spaß gemacht.)      Okumaya devam et
