      Closing the U.K. Rings

      June 3, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

5,200km by road and 350km by foot - its been quite the journey.

Summer seems to have finally settled on England, with today being warm and sunny.
We packed up at Cambridge, loaded the car and then bussed back into Cambridge to finish our audio walking tour before returning late morning to commence our drive back to Heathrow where we started 5 weeks ago.
Once again, a slight diversion was made to satisfy Loss’ particular interests - this time in the field of aviation.
We drove to the Royal Airforce Museum, London which is quite near Heathrow and spent an hour or so going through 6 hangars of aviation history - from pre WW1 to the Cold War days. I had to agree with Loss that it was the finest collection of aircraft and other related items we had ever seen and it was difficult to drag her away as she was so interested in every aspect of the displays ;)

By late afternoon we had navigated to the Sofitel at Terminal 5, Heathrow and checked in. I left Loss there to get things organised while I drove around the perimeter of Heathrow to return the hire car, then bus and tube it back to the hotel. These things always take longer than you would hope, but on the bright side I had just enough credit left on my ‘Oyster Card’ to complete the journey back to the Sofitel without having to top up.
Final reflections on the UK over dinner brought back some great memories of amazing experiences and it was impossible to settle on a single, favourite experience.

A 7.20am flight to Reykjavik in the morning means a pretty early start even though we are staying adjacent to the terminal.
Thank you UK for a wonderful 5 weeks and we are very thankful we have been given care, protection and health during this whole time.

      Great Britz (& the Pretenders)

      June 27, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

My final hours have come around, and I'm reflecting on my trip to Finland and the UK. What made my trip was my friends. These are the true Brits who have welcomed me into their homes and make the great in Great Britian.
Catching up with Jarlath and Jenny, these two I worked with, and they have served their King and country in the most difficult ( and sometimes dangerous) way. I was proud to have worked alongside them. Thank you for all those great times and sharing of stories. I salute you both CAPT Norman OBE & Mrs Norman.
Dave & Bev Zeal, who both served as teachers and school principals, producing our future leaders (thank God they never had Boris in their classes, or on reflection, perhaps they should have) and business people. I met Dave and Bev in the 1980s, sharing many a BBQ and a pint or three at Shere( the Queen!). Mr & Mrs Zeal, you have done Britian proud.
Alan Mason & Shirley Swan, engaged for 39 yrs ( can't rush a special moment) who have devoted themselves to sailing and yachting and are now bringing on a new crop of sailors, one of them 87 yrs old. You deserve " special mention" in despatches for your yachting skills and knot tying lessons you gave me ( along with trying to line me up with Sophie.......sigh.....). I met Alan & Shirley in 1986 in Greece, and the friendship has been continuous and close.
Gavin and Glenys, who are the great Pretenders in Gomshall, but their presence is real( no one checked their immigration papers!). These two take on every new situation with gusto, and their presence in the Motherland helps make Britian all that much greater. Gavin & Glenys, my NZ pals have very much included me in their family, and I'm so grateful for this.
Then there is my gorgeous daughter, Serena, who is no pretender, but a true beauty who has made friends in so many countries and the very reason I came North. Serena made Finland her home for 6 mths and has also been to the Motherland on 2 occasions so Serena can call herself a Brit for the moment. I love you, Serena, and thank you for making this trip possible.
I shall miss all my friends in the Britian but we will meet again, sometime soon...........( now has anyone seen my passport, can you check under the beds............🙃.)

      Die Reise geht zuende..

      January 13 in England ⋅ ☁️ 1 °C

      Porto to London

      October 13, 2019 in England ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

We woke to rain this morning and lots of it. Ian gave his dad a call to wish him a happy birthday which he was surprised but pleased to hear from him, he was off to an Indian dinner with Malcolm and Alex.

We finished packing and then headed down to the foyer of our apartment building to wait for our driver, we waited and waited and waited. I tried calling the host without luck so at 9.15 we headed up to the taxi rank to get a taxi to the airport - not happy Jan! Just as we were getting to the rank Diana the host called us and said she would get onto the driver. We waited 5 minutes and when we had heard nothing we got in the cab. A minute later the driver called to say he was on his way and I told him that wasn’t good enough and he wasn’t required, he didn’t even bother apologising or giving any kind of excuse! I then rang Diana back and told her I wasn’t happy and wanted a full refund, she was very apologetic.

We got to the airport in about 20 minutes and then joined the line to drop off our bags. Initially the line moved quite slowly but then a few more check in counters were opened and it went quite quickly. Even though it had started raining at 6am it stopped when we were outside waiting for our driver and getting a taxi and again when we boarded the plane, which was quite delayed, but they somehow made up the time and e of phone so we landed at London City Airport about 5 minutes late.

We then had to locate our driver who we had organised to take us to the Sofitel at Heathrow. I had paid an additional £5 to have a driver meet us inside, but that didn’t happen and we finally found him at the pick up area after a couple of phone calls. I was pissed off to start with - not with the driver but with the company we booked with but decided to let it drop. Our drive across to Heathrow took us right through the centre of London and it was nice to revisit some of the areas we had explored in September. There was a bit of traffic because there had been a rally/protest which had only recently ended, so some streets were still closed off.

We got to our hotel just after 4pm, we settled in, then went and has afternoon tea before walking over to terminal 5 to check out what we would need to do in the morning and also to top up the Oyster cards Sue and Ross had lent us.

We had dinner in the hotel restaurant which was very nice and a great sleep in the wonderfully comfortable beds at the Sofitel. The trip ahead is a long one and we are in economy on the way home. Sitting next to us was a lovely young lady from Perth who had been in Europe at a professional swim meet - she swims for the US, a Washington team. Her name is Brianna Throssell and she was in the 200 metre Butterfly final in Rio and hopes to represent Australia again at the next Olympic Games in 2020.

      Mit dem Stockbus zum Flughafen

      December 6, 2022 in England ⋅ ☀️ 6 °C

      Landfall

      February 26, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 5 °C

Landed! Easy flight, superb service, pretty cool seat. First time flying backwards on a commercial jet.

As we were readying for takeoff, I had a moment to appreciate how lucky I am. Sitting on the upper deck, I had a clear sight of the runway - I've never been able to see them so clearly before while on the plane. So many lights showing a clear path. It made me think. It's been a terrible six months, no doubt, but I still have a life where I can take trips like this, a family who loves me and a career that enables me to be where I need to be when I am needed and take breaks like this when the time is right. Just had to share my moment of gratitude!Read more

      Hinflug mit Hindernissen

      July 23, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C
