      Tower of London

      3 maj 2022, England ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

We had the BEST Beefeater tour guide. We walked right into the Tower of London as he was starting off. He's beefy409 on Facebook.

This is the place of kings, queens, and executions. The crown jewels are houses here (no pictures allowed).

The Beefeaters are the Queen's personal guard and still live here. They must serve 20 years in the armed forces before being able to apply. More people have been to space than have become Beefeaters.

Legend has it that as long as the ravens still live at the Tower, England will not fall.

      Tower Bridge, London Tower

      31 maj 2019, England ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

The Tower, Skygarden and Book of Mormon

      3 oktober 2017, England ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

Late start and tube to the Tower of London. Similar to Edinburgh Castle in a way. Lots of history - good displays and plenty to see.

Saw the crown jewels. Sparkly, but we're probably not distinguished enough to appreciate that all the gems are diamonds and rubies etc. (rather than fake gems which look just as sparkly to us).

Few school groups there but not too crowded. Cool displays and learnt some history. Battlements were nice. White tower in the middle was good - 3 levels of displays. Store for armaments so had lots of guns and swords and armour.

Learnt about two daring escapes. One ended in a drop from the tower and a heavy, fatal impact (beheading from the fall). One ended in him getting clean away thanks to his canny Scottish wife, her hand maidens and some cross dressing.

Ate our packed lunch at the Tower. Then headed onwards, pausing to enjoy the sun and view of the River Thames and Tower Bridge, then on to Sky Garden to see Em and TK (and Em's cousin).

Sky Garden was cool - free but you book online in advance and then line up for 10 or 20min or so. Very tall building (with a curve that used to melt cars - slight design flaw) with a garden (and cafes) on top. Really great views over London.

After that, tube to Leicester Square to get more show tickets - settled on Aladdin for the two of us on Wednesday.

Em and TK (and Debbie) had put their names in a lottery draw for cheaper Book of Mormon tickets for tonight (the show does a draw for every show). So we went along to watch the draw at 5.30PM. Arrived early so Debbie said we should put our names in. And a stroke of luck as we both got our names drawn out for two tickets each! Radi was very excited as she never wins anything.

Very lucky for us so all four of us got to go. Tickets were normally around £50 at least for single seats way up the back - good seats would've been £100 or more. We got ours through the lottery for £20 each. A steal.

Off to dinner at the popular Bao London (place that normally has a line outside going down the street). Another stroke of luck with the only table available when we arrived was for 5 people. Had delicious bao buns and a taro white Russian (prompting Radi to loudly exclaim "I don't usually like white Russians!").

Then some delicious small fancy desserts from Yauatcha Soho (and a frozen Snickers bar from a dairy - we introduced TK to them and he concurs that they are delicious).

Off to Book of Mormon and where are our seats? Front row in stalls - almost close enough to touch the actors. Fantastic. And the show itself fantastic. Very crass at times, but without crossing the line. Really well done and lots of laughs (and good songs, dancing and acting).

      Overall a really great day!

      Tower of London

      31 mars 2018, England ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

      The Tower of London

      1 april 2017, England ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

This was one of my favourite places to visit in London. I had not realised it was so big and I ended up spending several hours exploring this landmark. I joined a talk by one of the Yeoman Wardens. It was an hour of humerous theatrics mixed with interesting facts about traitors, murderers and beheadings performed in the Tower.

I then went to see the Crown Jewels and was happy it was spring so the large queuing area wasn't required. The jewels were absolutely stunning and I found it hard to believe they were real as the security seemed low key (no bag scanners like most of the other tourist attractions). No photos were allowed unfortunately.

      London day 8 Mon 30 April 2018

      30 april 2018, England ⋅ ☀️ 8 °C

Wet and cold day. Wore thermals under clothes, down jacket and gortex rain jacket. Tower of London after breakfast. Queued to get to in, Interesting mint and historical coin making display in the Royal Mint (1279-1812). Beefeater historical talk in the chapel as it was too wet for tours. Queued in the rain again to see the Royal Jewels. Next visited the White Tower (original home of the Crown Jewels, now housing historical armour displays. Then St Martins Tower with old royal crowns from which the jewels had been removed. After the Tower walked to Tower Bridge for the glass footway experience, followed by the steam driven Victorian engines for lifting the road to allow shipping through. Walked to the Shard stopping for lattes on the way, and took the lift to the 68th floor and walked to 69th floor where Yvonne had a cocktail, walked up to open 72nd floor and took more photos. Steak at Southwark Hotel.Läs mer

      Auf der Mauer entlang!

      14 juni 2018, England ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

      Tower of London

      2 januari 2017, England ⋅ ☀️ 4 °C

      Tower of London - Königskammer

      14 juni 2018, England ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Hier hat König Edward I. zeitweise gelebt.

      Tower of London (cont’d)

      17 juni 2013, England ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

The Tower of London has played a prominent role in English history. It was besieged several times, and controlling it has been important to controlling the country. The Tower has served variously as an armoury, a treasury, a menagerie, the home of the Royal Mint, a public record office, and the home of the Crown Jewels of England. From the early 14th century until the reign of Charles II in the 17th century, a procession would be led from the Tower to Westminster Abbey on the coronation of a monarch. In the absence of the monarch, the Constable of the Tower is in charge of the castle. This was a powerful and trusted position in the medieval period. In the late 15th century, the castle was the prison of the Princes in the Tower. Under the Tudors, the Tower became used less as a royal residence, and despite attempts to refortify and repair the castle, its defences lagged behind developments to deal with artillery.

The zenith of the castle's use as a prison was the 16th and 17th centuries, when many figures who had fallen into disgrace, such as Elizabeth I before she became queen, Sir Walter Raleigh, and Elizabeth Throckmorton, were held within its walls. This use has led to the phrase "sent to the Tower". Despite its enduring reputation as a place of torture and death, popularised by 16th-century religious propagandists and 19th-century writers, only seven people were executed within the Tower before the World Wars of the 20th century. Executions were more commonly held on the notorious Tower Hill to the north of the castle, with 112 occurring there over a 400-year period. In the latter half of the 19th century, institutions such as the Royal Mint moved out of the castle to other locations, leaving many buildings empty. Anthony Salvin and John Taylor took the opportunity to restore the Tower to what was felt to be its medieval appearance, clearing out many of the vacant post-medieval structures.

In the First and Second World Wars, the Tower was again used as a prison and witnessed the executions of 12 men for espionage. After the Second World War, damage caused during the Blitz was repaired, and the castle reopened to the public. Today, the Tower of London is one of the country's most popular tourist attractions. Under the ceremonial charge of the Constable of the Tower, and operated by the Resident Governor of the Tower of London and Keeper of the Jewel House, the property is cared for by the charity
