      Seattle, Space Needle

      Es war eine super ruhige Nacht und so starten wir erholt in den Tag. Beim Frühstück kommt unser Gastgeber uns begrüßen. Wir erzählen Ihm von unseren Tagesplan und er sagt: Dafür seid ihr zu spät, die Fähre nach Seattle geht nur morgens und abends.

      Wir wollten eigentlich mit der Fähre von Southworth nach Seattle Hafen fahren, von dort mit der Straßenbahn zur Space Needle. Gestern hatte ich die Karten für 13:45 Uhr gebucht. Okay, nun fahren wir mit dem Auto in die entgegen gesetzte Richtung nach SeaTacPark zum Zug.

      Die Entfernungen sind schon immens, zum Bahnhof sind es mal eben 63 km.
      Am Bahnhof gibt es einen bewachten Parkplatz, der normalerweise 27 $ am Tag kostet, von uns wollen Sie 50 $ haben. Direkt daneben gibt es noch einen Park und Ride Parkplatz, der ist kostenlos. Also parken wir da.

      Mit der Line 1 geht es bis Westlake, dann weiter mit der Monorail. In der Linie 1 war zwar nicht viel los, aber so viele Menschen, die high und schräg drauf waren, haben wir noch nirgendwo gesehen.

      Im Gegensatz dazu war die Monorail echt super.
      Die wurde 1962 zur Weltausstellung gebaut und verkehrt nur zwischen Westlake und Seattle Center, das sind

      Ein Muss ist die Space Needle
      Wikipedia:
      „Die Weltraumnadel ist ein 184 Meter hoher Aussichts- und Restaurantturm in Seattle, der zur Century 21 Exposition, der Weltausstellung 1962, errichtet wurde. Nachdem sich der Beginn der Bauarbeiten unter anderem durch eine ungeklärte Finanzierungsfrage hingezogen hatte, konnte er in einjähriger Bauzeit rechtzeitig fertiggestellt werden. Das Turmbauwerk war das erste mit einem Drehrestaurant in Nordamerika.

      Im Mai 2018 wurde im unteren Teil des Turmkorbs – auf der sogenannten „Loup“-Ebene – ein Glasboden als neue Attraktion eröffnet. Dieser ist der einzige drehbare weltweit. Der Glasboden wird über 48 Rollen und zwölf Motoren bewegt und lässt sich sowohl in der Geschwindigkeit wie der Drehrichtung steuern.“

      Das Wetter war heute super und so konnten wir Mount Rainier auf der einen und Mount Baker auf der anderen Seite wolkenlos sehen. Durch die nach außen geneigten Glasscheiben hat man einen ungestörten Blick in alle Richtungen.

      Noch einen drauf setzt der drehbare Glasboden zwei Etagen tiefer, sensationell!!!      Lue lisää

      Seattle so far including the Pike Market with its quirky art work like Golden Girls/Kiss mashup and the wall of gum (yes chewy), Downtown statues, our hipster hotel, a spectacular meal featuring Northwestern classics such as cedar plank salmon (cooked on a cedar board) at the stunning Six Seven restaurant on the water and the incredible views of the city at night from the famous Space Needle, followed by the monorail back to the hotel.Lue lisää

      Seattle - Day 3 (Chihuly Glass)

      As if Mt Rainier and the Snoqualmie Falls weren’t enough spectacle for one day, we then went to Chihuly Garden and Glass to see the stunning blown glass works by Dale Chihuly. Seattle claims to have more glassblowing shops than anywhere else in the world outside of Murano Island, the district in Venice, Italy, where Murano glass originated.Lue lisää

      Seattle - Day 2

      Today we made the most of Seattle’s Pacific Northwest landscape by riding e-bikes up to Ballard then headed over to the hip Fremont for lunch and to check out the Fremont Troll (one of its many street works). We then went on an underground tour beneath Pioneer Square (the US’s first historic district). After the great Seattle Fire of 1889 they rebuilt the city above street level creating an underground of about 30 blocks that became the largest illegal trade (eg moonshine and red light etc) in the states. It’s now mostly unused except for this tour!Lue lisää

      Auf der Space Needle

      Unsere Füße waren zwar schon am Meckern, doch es stand noch eine Attraktion auf dem Plan: die Space Needle - das Wahrzeichen der Stadt. Hier trennten Matthias und ich uns kurzzeitig, sodass ich die tolle Aussicht in 160 m Höhe alleine genossen habe. Dank des schönen Wetters war die Aussicht der Wahnsinn! Eine Etage tiefer ist es dann sogar möglich, durch einen Glasboden in die Tiefe zu blicken. Ich finde es bemerkenswert, dass dieses 60 Jahre alte Monument so gut in Schuss ist.Lue lisää

      Sightseeing in Seattle

      Übervorbereitet wie immer - immerhin habe ich die Esta schon vorausschauend vor zwei Monaten absolut eigens für diesen Zweck besorgt - geht es auf meinen ersten USA Roadtrip. 🇺🇸 Genauer gesagt geht es in das benachbarte Seattle. Die Stadt kenne ich von Twilight, wo sie vor Allem durch ihren Regen und die Präsenz von Vampiren glänzt. ☔🧛‍♂️ Aufgrund des Frühlingswetters sind wir vor ersterem wie auch letzterem bestens geschützt, sodass einer umfangreichen Sightseeingtour nichts mehr im Wege steht. Anders als in Europa muss man bei jedem Grenzübergang seine Papiere vorzeigen und erklären, weshalb man die Grenze passiert. Nachdem ein paar Bonbons für meinen leider immer noch erkälteten Hals gekauft sind, verstauen wir das Gepäck im Hotel. In der 17 Etage ist die Aussicht auf Seattles Downtownarea einfach ein Traum, aber es geht noch besser. 🏙️ Schon in Belgien fand ich es schlau, zuerst ganz mittelalterlich nach einem Turm Ausschau zu halten, um sich einen ersten Überblick über die Stadt zu verschaffen. Zwar kann Nordamerika in der Regel mit keinen alten Bergfrieden dienen, die Spaceneedle - love the nerdy wording - bietet aber einen guten Ausgleich. Seattles Bevölkerung ist etwas weniger divers als die von Vancouver, gleichwohl handelt es sich aber auch um einen Techhub, der nah an Wasser und Bergen liegt. Ich habe Seattle als absolut lebenswerte Stadt kennengelernt. Das glutenfreie Angebot ist ähnlich wie im Nachbarland ziemlich breit. So kann ich mir an Tag zwei zum Frühstück glutenfreie Zimtschnecken mit Soße gönnen. Yummy! Insgesamt bieten die Cafés und Restaurants aber viel "schweres" Essen mit viel Ei, Bacon und Zucker an. Letzte Wochen hatte ich z.B. einen kleinen Zwischenfall mit Dosentomaten, die zweifelsohne gesüßt waren. Das Chili war dann nacher nicht mehr so tasty... Zurück zu Seattle. Es gibt hier eine gepflegte Museumsmeile mit allerdings eher teuren Ausstellungen. Wir entscheiden uns aufgrund eines Gutscheins für das Chihuly Garden and Glass, eine farbenfrohe und ziemlich beeindruckenden Ausstellung des Glasbläsers Dale Chihuly, welche auf eindrucksvolle Art Natur- und maritime Motive aufgreift und in einer bewegenden Story verpackt. Weiter gehts zum Pike Place Market, einer sehr belebten Markthalle, gegenüber der sich der allererste Starbucks Store der Welt befindet. 🧋 Der Markt mündet in die Post Alley, wo sich die Gum Wall befindet, eine zu einem Theater gehörende Wand, welche mit 1000en Kaugummis beklebt wurde. Not so yummy! Um den kulturlastigen Trip mit etwas Natur abzurunden besuchen wir schließlich die Snoqualmie Falls im Umland vor Seattle. Wenn ich bisher an die USA gedacht habe, kam mir in erster Linie die exportierte Kultur und klischeehafte Yankee-Mentalität in den Kopf. Was ich völlig unterschätzt habe, ist die schiere Größe und Vielfältigkeit der Natur in Nordamerika. Ich freue mich sehr darauf, diese im nächsten Trip noch tiefer zu erkunden! 🤠Lue lisää

      Day 2

      15,000 steps around Seattle!

      We started our day with the Pike Place Market Food Tour with Jonathan from Eat Seattle.

      We went on a journey through the Pacific Northwest by tasting Seattle’s best artisan vendors in the famous Pike Place Market.

      Our menu for the next 2 hours was: Chicken Tinga tacos
      Maple Candy Salmon Jerky
      Cultured Greek Gelato
      Clam Chowder
      Fresh margarita pizza
      White truffle and pesto crostini
      Black truffle and pepper crostini
      Noccialata hazelnut spread
      Pit Smoked Pulled Pork
      Blackened Cajun Salmon
      Chocolate Cherries

      My favourites were definitely the tacos, pulled pork and chocolate cherries! We learnt a lot about the market's history - for example, you have to start your first shop there so places like McDonalds or Subway have no chance to take a spot from the locals! Starbucks did have their first shop there and went on to become internationally known worldwide. Jonathan was also the perfect guide, making it fun and informative along the way.

      We headed downtown to the monorail for the next part of our day, and started with the Chihuly Garden & Glass gallery.

      The eight galleries and three Drawing Walls of the Exhibition Hall offer a comprehensive collection of Dale Chihuly’s significant series of work. The artworks demonstrate how he pushed the boundaries of glass as an art medium in concept, execution and presentation.

      The work was truly beautiful and in the garden it was displayed in a way that made it look like it was part of nature. Definitely a must see!

      Right next door was the famous Space Needle.

      Built as the centrepiece and inspiration for the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair, the Space Needle has since become a part of the Seattle experience and the globally recognized icon for the city. Standing 184 meters/605 feet tall, the Space Needle gives visitors unparalleled views of Seattle and beyond through its “floor-to-forever” glass walls and the world’s first revolving glass floor.

      We went all the way to the top in the lift that gave us spectacular views of the city, all glass fronted walls which were fantastic to see the whole of Seattle. The revolving glass bottomed floor was interesting but we all braved it and jumped on!

      Just a short walk through the park was the Museum of Pop Culture

      The Museum of Pop Culture is a leading-edge nonprofit museum, dedicated to the ideas and risk-taking that fuel contemporary popular culture. At MoPOP, artists, audiences and ideas converge, bringing understanding, interpretation, and scholarship to the popular culture of our time.

      We didn't have lot of time here so I chose to focus on the Nirvana and grunge room..taking me back to my teenage years in the 90s. And then went on to find the popular film, fantasy and horror sections. I nearly didn't make it through the horror part..pretty much ran through the display!

      We grabbed a Lyft.. Seattle's version of Uber and headed across to Fremont Brewery.

      Fremont Brewery is a family-owned craft brewery founded in 2009 to brew small-batch artisan beers made with the best local ingredients we can find. Their slogan is 'Because Beer Matters!'

      I'm not a beer drinker but they had a lovely..and very boozy..blackcurrant and blueberry cider on tap so I had one of those.

      A great stop before we walked through Gas Works Park.

      Gas Works Park has beautiful sweeping views of the city and Lake Union. It contains remnants of a coal gasification plant, the last of its kind in the United States. The plant operated from 1906 to 1956, but is now an iconic fixture in Seattle's landscape. The park made an appearance in the movie 'Ten Things I Hate About You' and the 'Sleepless in Seattle' house can also be seen from the hill for all the movie fans.

      Our last stop was dinner at Pablo y Pablo in the Fremont district.

      Pablo y Pablo is a Mexican restaurant and bar whose menu uses ingredients and techniques from around the world. Pablo y Pablo aims to give a genuine dining experience to guests that’s as warm and energised as the food, and it certainly does that. Our server was Ismael from Barcelona and he was fantastic! Top class customer service, genuinely interested in us as a group and was able to recommend different dishes and cocktails..he even remembered that one of the girls couldn't have diary and ordered the things she could have so she didn't miss out..amazing end to a full and fun day!       Hier nous sommes montés sur une tour appelée l'aiguille  de l'espace (the Space Needle). Comme nous avions pris un city tour nous avons eu des pass : du coup on a doublé tout le monde. En haut nous pouvions voir toute la ville. À l'étage du dessous il y avait un restaurant tournant mais nous n'y sommes pas allés car il paraît que ça coûte hyper cher. En haut à l'intérieur de la tour il y avait un écran géant où il y avait une carte avec le nombre de visiteurs des pays qui augmentait. Et en bas, il y avait un endroit où on prenait des photos et après on pouvait mettre un fond différent.

      À Seattle, nous avons logé chez un ami de ma mère (ils étaient médecins ensemble  en Angola, il y a presque 20 ans) et on a fait une course avec  deux vélos à quatre pédaliers (où nous étions 6 par vélo) sur la plage. On a presque gagné.
