Auf den Spuren der Indianer @New Mexiko

    June 10, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

In New Mexiko leben heute noch 19 Indianerstämme in Pueblos. Eine ehemalige und eine immer noch bewohnte Siedlung haben wir besucht, nette Menschen getroffen und viel über deren Geschichte und Bräuche erfahren.

    - Ancestral Pueblo in Bandelier

    day two over....

    May 16, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

557 miles today. Left cold and foggy Texas. As soon as we go into New Mexico it got hot. Red hot. I'm a cheap motel now. Just what the doctor ordered. 900+ mikes so far. Time for a couple of beers then off to bed.

    Laguna Pueblo

    May 29, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Ever heard of horse hair pottery?!

This is a unique style of pottery prominent in the Pueblo Indian conservation area - clay pots from out of the kiln are embedded with horse mane & tail hair for thin & thick lines respectively; further etched with designs & color.

Fried bread with lightly sugared cinnamon is a popular delicacy here & tasted absolutely delicious, I think it's very similar to our Indian charuti (festive dessert in Karnataka).

Another interesting fact was that of the kachina - Katchina is a spirit being in western Pueblo religious beliefs of Native American cultures of Acoma Pueblo, Laguna Pueblo located in the southwestern United States. There are aspects to the katchina: the supernatural being, the kachina dancers(masked members of the community who represent kachinas at religious ceremonies), and kachina dolls, small dolls carved in the likeness of kachinas.

    El Morro National Monument

    June 16, 2016 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 64 °F

From Gallup we continued on Route 66, before taking a sidetrip to El Morro National Monument. There we hiked inscription trail. Inscriptions from Spanish conquistadors and Anglo emigrants, as well as ancient Pueblo petroglyphs appear on the bluff. A pool of water lies at the base of the bluff. At one time, it was the only source of water for miles around.Read more

    KOA Journey

    July 2, 2016 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

Stopped for the night to break up the long drive between Carlsbad & Arches. Although this KOA is definitely slumming it compared to last night, it'll do for a few hours of sleep. The ground is less rocky here, which is nice, but the showers are old & claustrophobic feeling. There was a burn ban, so no fire for marshmallows, and it was too windy for our charcoal to stay lit, so we had lukewarm canned chili, sandwhiches, & cold s'mores for dinner. The manager seems very proud of his lava rocks & the nearby volcano, which he stopped by to talk to us about. There are also horses next door, so it smells a bit like rodeo here. But there is a nice view & free wifi, so I can post this without using my data.

Update: 7:30 am- Flies love horses! We awoke to flies all over the outside of our tent. I added a pic of some of the horses. And God bless ear plugs because we were apparently near a frequently used train track. On a positive note, we found a hot plate & a sink back by the laundry room & Keri made some excellent breakfast tacos. ☺

    Ancient Ways Cafe

    March 4, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

So had to stop, good memories from my last visit to Grants, New Mexico
My sister, her husband and their youngest lived in Grants for awhile. It is surrounded by scenery but also alot of poverty. The Ancient Ways Cafe is a group of LGBT people that run a very small cafe with awesome coffee and food. l had a great chat with several locals and the owner. It made a nice break between hikes and brought back some good memories. Definitely recommend stopping if you are ever up this way.Read more

    El Morro National monument

    March 4, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 57 °F

Beautiful day and I did the hike over the top of the box canyon, and found snow. Talked myself over it all knowing the van was parked in front of ranger station and they would find me if anything went wrong. Apparently I still don't feel comfortable walking on the top of things with nothing to grab ahold of. It was around 9am and the ravens were having a blast on the thermals coming off of the rocks. Started the hike with them soaring above me and in the middle they were even with me. That did make it worth the walk across the top.Read more

    El Malpais National Monument

    June 16, 2016 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 64 °F

Before continuing on Route 66, we hiked the El Calderon trail at El Malpais National Monument. While on the trail we saw several caves that we formed by volcanic eruptions about 2,000-3,000 years ago.

Lavaland RV park, Grants, New Mexico

    March 3, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 45 °F

So this is where I am camping tonight. My sister used to live in Grants and I made a run to Walmart and it brought back memories. This is a funky town. But all said the people are very nice and the campsite has wifi, electricity and cable tv. To bad I did not bring a tv. my site overlooks the interstate but not close enough to be noisy, but the lights on all of the vehicles going by are almost like tv. I learned something about myself today. I checked out the free campsite I was going to stay at but of course it has no amenities. I actually drove by it and found out that it was 15 miles off of the highway, in the woods and there was no one else there. I decided I was not that brave and decided to pay for amenities. Yes I am getting soft in my old age. But I can leave the trailer here while exploring El Morro and El Malpais. Plus they have showers and a tv lounge if I really get desperate. The weather is perfect, 58 and sunny in the afternoon and 30 at 6 am in the morning. Clear and bright. Went through 3 layers of clothes between 6:30 am and 11am. But is great for hiking.Read more
