Day 5... Disney World - Hollywood

      December 31, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

We are at the Disney World Hollywood Park. It is very busy as expected. We went into the Echo Lake park to see the Indiana Jones Exhibit and ride but had very long lineups.

We then headed to the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, where we walked around and saw lots of cool Star Wars things. We waited for almost 2 hours to do the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run ride. It was fun... Alec and Aspen were pilots, Ares, and Kendra Gunners, and Nana was an engineer.

Next on Grand Avenue was the Muppet Vision 3D show, which was fun. We walked around a bit more and had lunch there around 1. Back to the trailer to let Lokie out (quite the walk to get her to grass!). We had a snack, got jackets and water, and went back to the park for the Frozen show.

Back to Echo Lake for the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing Along Celebration. The show was great, of course, and Aspen was very happy. We all enjoyed it, and they were pretty excited when it started snowing on us. Lots of adult humour, too.

The next stop was the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. Unfortunately, another almost 2 hour wait, but Ares talked about it all day... couldn't disappoint him.
It was really fun. We all enjoyed it, and Ares said it wasn't scary (though he said he almost threw up when we bounced off the seat).

Ares, Aspen and I took the tram back around 8:30. Everyone was very tired and had sore feet. Both were in bed and asleep shortly after 9.

Ares' favorite thing today was the Tower of Terror and Aspen's was the Frozen show.... no surprise. She bought a souvenir with the characters in a plastic case. Ares got his very Dark Saber from the Mandalorian Show.

Daddy and Kendra stayed late for the Fantasia Show, which they said was fabulous.

Good day, though a bit chilly.... cold at night.

    • Day 8

      Hollywood Studios

      February 28, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 8 °C

Friday was our last full day at Disney, so we made an earlier start in the hope of getting another opportunity go at Rise of the Resistance. Irritatingly, when we arrived we found the Skyliner wouldn’t open for nearly half an hour, and a long queue had already formed. The Skyliner opened at 08:30, by the time we had boarded, lined up again for our connecting ‘flight’ from Caribbean Beach and gotten through bag check it was after nine and the park had been open several minutes, allowing us to join only the 123rd boarding group. Only the first 64 groups are guaranteed to be accommodated, but we managed to get in previously as part of the 124th group, so we weren’t too disheartened.

Having gotten into the park, we decided to queue up for Rock ’n’ Rollercoaster. We played the Toy Story games on the Disney parks app whilst we waited, by the time we boarded we had waited 1hr 15mins (easily the longest time we had waited) and people joining the queue were expected to wait about two hours. Despite being a ‘low’ season at Disney, this had been typical of the kinds of waits and this was one of the few times we lined up without a fastpass for a major attraction.

We finished the morning with coffee and fastpass attractions and some shopping and trading for pins, allowing Dan to complete a set of pins for the very first time as well as picking up some pins with designs related to significant events or attractions from this trip.

      Slinky dog dash

      February 26, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

We were keen to have another go at Rise of the Resistance, but decided against facing the early start and scrum of people trying to get in at park opening that day (an essential requirement to get a chance). Instead we kicked off our Wednesday at the Disney Hollywood Studios Park with a leisurely, late-morning coffee and Pretzel on 'Hollywood boulevard' before heading to our fast pass bookings.

Although it had been attracting hours long queues throughout our stay, we hadn't expected much from the new Slinky Dog Dash coaster. At a glance it looks like a fairly run of the mill, out door steel coaster; whilst that is mostly true there are some cool details in the theming. The mechanism itself also seemed a little unusual, with the lift hills acting in a 'launch' style, rather than the conventional slow drag to the top, like a gentle version of rock'n' roller-coaster or the French Space Mountain.

      Disney Hollywood Studios

      February 23, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Sunday morning we woke early again, so we decided to try and jump in the virtual queue for the new Rise of the Resistance attraction in the Hollywood Studios park. Via the Skyliner, It took a little under 30 minutes from leaving our hotel building to being inside the park, despite a hefty morning rush and queuing up for a real stickler at the bag check.

That had us arriving a few minutes after the park opened (you can join the virtual queue from opening time, as long as you are inside). That landed us in the 124th boarding group; they only guarantee to get through 64 groups in a day, so we weren't hopeful. We decided to checkout the new Galaxy's Edge (aka Blackspire Outpost) anyway.

On arriving, we were pretty bowled over by the detail in the theming - we actually spent time gawping at the bins and lamposts at the entrance. We spent a good chunk of the morning checking out the shops and food offerings, as well as the Blackspire outpost quests on the Play Disney app (which can trigger certain sound effects around the outpost).

      Back to Hollywood Studios

      May 16, 2018 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 29 °C

Today we were back in Hollywood Studios catching things we hadn't seen yet. Including, Indiana Jones stunt show, Frozen sing along (because we are that cool), meeting more characters, and the Star Wars desert party and fireworks show. We also ate in a cool restaurant lunchtime that looked like a 1950's drive-in movie theatre.

Ended the day with the extra magic hours at Magic Kingdom until midnight. Long day but lots of fun. We are starting to realise that we don't have much time left...

      Disney Hollywood

      July 8, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

      Hollywood Studios

      May 10, 2018 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

After the wedding we went to Hollywood Studios. I didn't join everybody for the meal as I still can't handle food that isn't toast, but it was apparently very good.

Then explored the park, watched a short Beauty and the Beast Musical, met BB-8, went on all the rides we wanted to do and then watched the night time show Fantasmic which was awesome as is everything here.Read more

"Get your elbows off the table! "

      February 26, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

For the afternoon we headed to the First Time in Forever, Frozen sing along show. It's good fun, but we had one eye on our watches because of our 14:00 reservation at the 50s Primetime Cafe, just across the square. We got out of the show a few minutes late, which raised our stress levels a little, but we none the less arrived right in the middle of our 10minute check-in window.

The Cafe was running behind on its reservations, so it was a 'hurry up and wait' situation, but the bar area (themed on a 50s dinner/kitchen) was pretty cool. The cast in the resteraunt role-play aunts/cousins in the 50s so it was made very clear we were expected to clear our plates; some less well behaved guests at an adjacent table recieved a yell of 'get your elbows off my table'. Forutnately we had been tipped-off about that house rule ahead of time and emerged with stickers to show our membership of the "official clean plates club" (although Alex completely cheated by covering the remains of her meal with her napkin!).

By the time we emerged from the Prime Time Cafe a fairly heavy rain had started, further cooling the unseasonably chilly day. The wait times at Epcot looked much more favourable, so decided to head over there; Dan was keen to take the 'friendship' boat, whilst Alex wanted the Skyliner, so naturally we took the Skyliner. We were treated to a substantial roll and frequent announcements that the service may be terminated at any time due to the strong winds.

      Indy Stunt show

      January 26, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

With this one used, we were able to grab another pass for the tower of Terror. Gooooo us!

As we sit waiting for the show to start, I realized just how helpful the fast pass is. We could exit this show before it starts, go stand in line for Tower, and by the time we're walking off the ride from using our Fast Pass, we would STLL be in line.

Oddly enough, we wound up losing this fast pass. Apparently the ride broke down and so, we got dropped from it. As a consolation, we now have a "Free Pass" to almost any ride we want. Doesn't work on the ones we are missing, but we will have to time it right and perhaps get a few more Twilight Tower of Terror rides in.

Speaking of which, we grabbed a replacement Fast Pass for Tower, should be able to ride that just before going to dinner, which sounds way better than doing it after ;-)

      Tower of Terror Trifecta

      January 29, 2020 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

Through the use of fast passes, we're riding it 3 times in a row. Gooooo us!!!

Is three times in a row too much??? Well . . . perhaps, but we did experience something that I was totally craving.

We finally had a totally different drop sequence!!!

One of the cool differences between Orlando's version and California's version is that Orlando is supposed to have 6 different ride drop sequences, so you might not know what's coming.

As the ride got older, more and more of those drop sequences dropped off. Until recently, it was actually down to 1.

A few months ago, they refurbished the ride. The theory was that along with the refurbishment came the reinstation of the additional sequences.

We rode it three times before today, and there might have been a slightly different one thrown into the mix, but it didn't feel like it.

Today, the first ride was the best and completely different than any of the previous, even stopping on a floor that had lights that we've never seen before.

The second ride was totally different than the first and different than the previous ones we rode.

The third was identical to the second, but still a lot of fun!!

So, if there are 6 drop sequences, we have managed to ride half of them!! So much fun, and we had a great time coming up with "poses" for the picture sequence. I have a fun project to work on when we get home and I feel like I have a lot of source material to work with!

Oh, and the scary pro photo was fun too!
