    Whale watching

    June 26, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Most of the time in Massachusetts was on the colder side but humid. Today was a gorgeous warm and sunny day.

Originally we were to leave for Franklin, NY for camping but we decided to not go to Cedar Point a bit later on as the kids are too little and wouldn't be worth it. We has 2 days to play with and Tom and Claire were only 30 minutes from the Gatti family so we thought we would have a few days there.

Tom and Claire invited us to go Whale watching and the only day we could go was today. As whale watching was 20 min away and early, we had the whale watch and then headed back to Lisa's house yo sat goodbye and pack up.

Whale watching was awesome. Tom used to work on the boat about 5 years ago over the summer busy months. We had the mates rate treatment and Brandon even got to drive the boat on the way back into the marina.

We had a very lucky trip and we were a 10% boat as we saw breaching, tail flipping, flipper flapping and saw whales everywhere , including a mom and calf. We also barely got out of the harbour going no more than 3 miles off of land and still able to see land.

We also had confirmation that Brandon gets motion sickness. We knew he got headaches in the car on the ride to the snow mountains back at home and he had a few headaches on car trips here, but halfway through the boat ride he had a massive headache and needed to lie down. He perked up when he got to drive the boat back.

After the whale watch we headed back to Lisa's house and said goodbye to the family. It was so nice the cousins were around to hangout with. Elisa is at least 10 years older than the oldest cousin so this was the first time hanging out with them as adults with their own lives. They were also amazing with the kids, even when Brandon was being his high energy.

We headed back to Tom and Claires in Rockport, had drinks on the porch, ordered food where Josh tried a lobster roll and was a pleasant night, heading to bed with the kids about 930pm.

    Gatti family

    June 23, 2018 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Today we spent the day with Elisa's family. We slept in the basement of the house which was quiet, on the colder side and very dark so we all had amazing sleep, exactly what we needed.
We woke up to Dina bringing all types of bagels, muffin and coffee to the house.

After we all got dressed our gang along with Dina and cousin Steph met up with Aunty Lisa, cousins Jackie, Terri, and Jimmy for a extremely fun time at the Willows, an arcade area. Everyone had fun and our kids got spoiled as the kids got all the tickets from the group and was able to win a light up moving wand and a light up sword.

About 3pm everyone came back to Dina 's where we had a bbq and played outdoor games. Inara and Brandon warmed up really well to the entire family and it was so great to see Elisa 's cousins playing hands on with them. Brandon held his own when we had a table of 9 or so playing uno.

Everyone included the arcade group, cousin Nick for a brief time, cousin Joe, Uncle Danny, Steve, and Scott, Noni, and cousin Andrew and aunt lynn. Everyone from Elisa's dad side was there except Elisa 's family.

The group dispersed about 8 and Josh headed with Joe and Steve to the local bar to watch Boston play baseball.

The kids were in bed by 9pm with the help of Stephanie playing with Brandon.

    Boat trip

August 22, 2017 in the United States ⋅

Today I had to work again, what a surprise. I had several meetings and talked to some people and so the day went by very fast. I have a colleague which lives in the near of Newton (where the company is) and the great thing about his beautiful house (which he has renovated for years) is that it has a boat pier on the Merrimac river. If you have a pier you have to have a boat of course and so he bought a small motor boat some years ago. I know him since quite a while and we also got friends over the time and when he was in Germany some weeks ago he invited me on a boat trip. I was happy that it worked out and so I met him at his house after work. We went out with the boat and enjoyed the sunset and some beers on the water. It was the hottest day of the week with up to 35 degrees Celsius and so it was a very warm evening, perfect for a boat trip. After it got dark we have returned to his house again and chatted a while before I headed back to Newburyport to sleep.Read more

    Company dinner

August 23, 2017 in the United States ⋅

This morning was really hectic and stressful. What happened? Everything was as usual as I woke up. I wanted to prepare my stuff for the drive to work and then suddenly I noticed that my car keys are missing!!! I ran through the whole apartment and checked all possible places but I couldn't find the keys. I was nearly becoming desperate when I had the idea to check the administration office of the building. And yeah: they had the keys, somebody must have dropped them there. After that I was driving happily to work. This day it was planned to have dinner and some drinks after work. I had already spoken to two colleagues before I got here and they have organized that almost everybody from the office joined us. It was great that they took my visit as an occasion to meet alltogether in our free time. In the restaurant in Haverhill I ordered a big burger - of course - next to my local craft beer. After dinner some of the colleagues left and only the young stayed. It was fun talking to them outside on a deck next to the Merrimac river. Around 10 PM we left and everybody went home.Read more

August 24, 2017 in the United States ⋅

This morning I got up and made myself ready for work, everything was kind of relaxed. I worked the whole day, as always running around and having meetings with my coworkers. This day I wanted to do the rest of my shopping as it was the last evening I had on the East coast. Shopping is cheaper here, especially in New Hampshire as there is no sales tax in this state. Therefore I drove to a mall in Salem in which there is an Apple Store. One part of my shopping plans also included to buy a new iPad as my old one at home is quite old and got really slow. When I have walked into the store a girl said that I had to wait shortly for a free staff member. I waited and waited and after around 20 minutes I left without an iPad :-( because I wanted to see the beach (I stay so close to the ocean and haven't been there this time yet) before the sun was gone. But with the delay in the Apple Store I didn't really make it to the beach on time. I have made some pics anyway because the scenery looked great and I have made the plan to return in the morning before work as this was my only chance to see the beach and Atlantic ocean on daylight. On the way to the apartment I stopped at Chili's which is a kind of Mexican restaurant franchise I have wanted to try the first time. I have expected a fast food restaurant but it was really good, a little bit like Dennys and worth the money.Read more

August 21, 2017 in the United States ⋅

The ferry over to Salem from Boston takes about an hour and it was a good crossing, leaving Boston Harbour gave us some beautiful views of the Boston skyline. The crossing wasn't too choppy but had taken travel sickness just incase.... once the speed kicked up it did get cold though, wind swept hair etc.

Once we got to Salem we jumped on the Hop On, Hop Off trolley that takes you around the village, we had an hilarious driver and guide, they had some really good banter. The first place we got off was the House of The 7 Gables to do the guided tour. Now I've never read the book so didn't know a lot about it but it was very interesting. We had a tour of the house and Captain Hawthorne's house too.

Now there has been a lot mentioned since I got here about an Eclipse happening today which just so happened to include Boston, a once a hundred years opportunity. Anyone who knows me well my will know I love anything to do with space etc. As a surprise my friend had previously provided us with the Eclipse glasses so we stood outside after the tour in the gardens by the waters edge and watched. Now because of where we were it wasn't a full eclipse and didn't go dark etc but it was still pretty cool.

We got back on the Salem trolley tour and stayed on and did the full loop while they pointed out interesting things ,we didn't have the same driver/guide combo so not quite as good but informative, included the guy who invented Monopoly lived on Salem and Alexander Graham Bell made the first phone call from there to The Boston Globe newspaper! We got off and had food at a seafood restaurant overlooking the water, food was really good and all the staff had quirky t-shirts on, 'want to see my mussels?' We walked back to the ferry port via the ice cream shop, obviously it would of been rude not to, I had M&M and chocolate flavour, yum.

While waiting for the ferry, the last one of the day at 7pm, we chatted to 2 Irish girls who were also visiting Boston from Dublin but had done a lot of travelling to. The ferry back we sat inside due to the cold winds but the doors were open, the sun was setting and I managed to get some gorgeous photos again of the Boston skyline as we came back into port.

We walked back through the shopping/market area, it was quite busy with people eating and drinking, a good atmosphere, before we got a taxi back to the hotel. We had a sit in the drinks area, look around the gift shop before heading up to our rooms. Ironically I managed to catch an episode of Mom that I'd missed at home from the most recent series, it's a US comedy show, which was great. The ITV Hub at home really is rubbish!

Anyway it's been a long day but lots seen, let's see what tomorrow brings...

    Love & hugs

    Boston goodbyes

September 2, 2016 in the United States ⋅

Today I rode the bike on Storrow drive for what may be the last time in a long time. While that road leaves much to be desired, it's still one of my favorite thoroughfares in Boston. I entered near BU's campus headed east towards 93, and the road was windy (as in twisty, not gusty) and fairly lacking in traffic. What a perfect road. That changed rapidly near Mass eye and ear. Then the ride out of Boston was a slog in hot traffic for about 45 minutes. My love hate for Boston continues.

The week flew by, and I visited as many people as I could. First my Uncle Nelson and his new house. An amazing place on the water in Belmont. I know, who knew there was waterfront in Belmont. You'll settle in soon you dog! Then on to Henry and Erica's. Henry gave me some beta on upstate NY as well as a couple maps. Good company and delicious food. Then drinks on top of that newish Mexican place in Harvard square (fillipes I think). Mike, Mike, Reggie and Matt. Great to see you guys before the road trip. Thanks Matt and Genevieve for letting me crash.

I also got to meet someone very special. Amanda and Nickolaus, my big sister and bro, had a boy named Duncan! I almost left a few weeks ago but I'm glad I got to meet my new nephew before the trip. Nickolaus and Amanda were lit up with joy, congrats you two! Also a bonus encounter with Shirley and Melissa. Great to see you two.

That night was in Roslindale at my Aunt Renee and Uncle Ed's. Woa baby, my Uncle Ed made some mean burgers with tomatoes from the garden. I've missed out on good tomatoes this year. This made up for it though. Great to see you two and thanks for the hospitality!

Today was also filled with friends. I met Erin, Erik, and little Lennon for breakfast this morning at the Watertown deluxe! What a treat, and thanks so much for breakfast. Then back to Matt and Genevieve's to hang out for just a little more. The FOMO is starting to be real Boston folk. A quick stop at Target for some plastic containers for food and then lunch with folks from my last job. What a warm welcome they gave me. You guys are amazing!

Tonight I'm writing from my friend Andrew's place in Andover. He, Amanda, Hunter and I had yet another amazing cheese club. Get ready for leftovers tomorrow Filgates.

This was a great week. Lots of love to everyone I saw and also for the rest of you that I didn't get a chance to see. Thanks for a great send off! Miss you already.

The attached photo is of the bike loaded up after visiting Nickolaus, Amanda, and Duncan. Wellesley Newton, September 1st!

    The witches of Salem

October 2, 2017 in the United States ⋅

Salem is famous for the witches trials in 1692, where 200 were accused of practicing witchcraft—the Devil's magic—and 20 were hung. Eventually, the colony admitted the trials were a mistake and compensated the families of those convicted.

Today from Oct to November Salem is turned into a town dedicated to Halloween. All the shops are dressed with skeletons, witches etc.. and the locals take the opportunity to make some money by putting on candlelit ghost walks.Read more

The last stop before continuing to our overnight stay at Portsmouth was the lovely little port of Rockport.

We had fish & ships (to go) at the end of the pier looking out across the ocean!, which has become a tradition when we go to the seaside.

July 6, 2017 in the United States ⋅

Read more
