      Independence Day

      John den wir während unserer Panne in Downtown kennenlernten, hatte uns am selben Abend noch mit seiner Schwester Kathryn bekannt gemacht. Sie bot uns an neben ihrem Haus auf dem Parkplatz einer Kirche zu Übernachten. Heute führt sie uns durch die hübsche Nachbarschaft von Oak Park, welche eine der schönsten von Chicago sein soll.

      Von Kathryn und ihrer Schwester Maurine wurden wir zum Independence-Day-Picknick eingeladen. Maurine hat ihre Kinder und Enkelkinder zur alljährlichen Grillparty zu Besuch und wir dürfen an diesem typisch amerikanischen Familienevent teilhaben. Ihre 5 Enkel spielen mit Marie und wir unterhalten uns interessiert mit den Erwachsenen. Die Gastgeberin hat ordentlich aufgetischt. Es gibt Burger, gegrilltes Hähnchen, Würstchen, Brot, Salat, Mais, Obst und zum Nachtisch allerlei süße Köstlichkeiten. Regina schmeckt der Key-Lime Pie und Jens der Flan am besten. Natürlich bekommt Regina auch die Rezepte zum nachmachen.

      Leider wird der Tag von einem grusligen Attentat überschattet. Ein Attentäter hat im Stadtteil Highland Park, welches 30 Minuten von uns entfernt ist,
      auf Zuschauer einer Independence-Day-Parade geschossen. Ein junger Mann hat dort heute von einem Dach aus 6 Menschen erschossen und 24 schwer verletzt. Wir sind alle einer Meinung, dass die offensichtlich viel zu losen US-Waffengesetze verschärft werden sollten. Wir hatten trotz alledem einen sehr schönen Nachmittag und Abend im Kreise der liebenswerten Familie.      Read more

      Mardi, 19 avril 2022
      Un dernier tour à pied jusqu'au Chicago River et un peu de shopping. Il ne reste pas beaucoup de place dans nos valises, nous choisissons de petites choses. Nous revenons par le bord du lac. Quelques sushis font un très bon dernier dîner américain. Le trajet jusqu'à l'aéroport est assez “busy" et nous réussissons le dernier jour de notre voyage d'emprunter un toll-hwy. Le retour de la voiture se fait sans aucun souci, qui l'aurait cru. Nous pensons d'être assez en avance à O'Hare Airport, mais le personnel Swiss n'est présent qu'au moment de l'enregistrement. Ça n'empêche pas que nous attendons und heure dans la file et qu'au final, l'employée ne trouve pas notre changement de vol. Un petit moment de stress et avec l'aide de la carte de crédit, nous tenons nos boarding pass en main. Voyager avec Swiss, pas évident s'il faut un changement en cours de route!Read more

      Chicago Day #1

      This morning I left Copenhagen for a direct flight to Toronto, where I had a layover before my final flight to Chicago in the US. Unfortunately, my flight bound for Chicago was ultimately delayed by over an hour, and I already had a relatively long layover in Toronto, so it ended up being a longer Canadian visit than I had anticipated.

      Fortunately, the flight to Chicago was pretty short, and I finally arrived at my hotel in the evening.

      Chicago Day #3

      This day was mainly spent at the Ace Comic Con, where I started off with a panel with Gwendoline Christie, an actress who has worked on Game of Thrones, Star Wars and The Hunger Games, among many other roles. She was a very interesting person to listen to, and it was fun to hear more about her work.

      I also caught a panel later in the day with Norman Reedus, an actor who is particularly known for his work on the popular show, "The Walking Dead".

      And finally I saw a panel with Tessa Thompson and Brie Larson, both of whom have also worked in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Brie played Captain Marvel in the movie of the same name, and Tessa played the character Valkyrie in Marvel's universe. She's also done the "Creed" movies with Sylvester Stallone, and the popular show "Westworld". So lots of interesting things to talk about!

      Before leaving Ace for the day, I was meant to see a panel with the new Spiderman, Tom Holland, and Jake Gyllenhall, who plays the villain in the latest Spiderman film, but he's also done a ton of other roles over the years. The panel was running late though, so I had to skip it, to catch a train back into the city for a concert with upcoming artist Dermot Kennedy. He's a very talented musician with a gifted voice, so it was great to see him live. Nice venue as well, close to the Aragon Ballroom where Nirvana played back in 1993!      Read more

      british airways to the rescue!

      24 hours later, we are back through security! Such a relief. At 8:30 this morning we decided we needed to get over to the airport. We arrived to the airport at 9:30 with no Aer Lingus representatives in sight. I decided to call (a few others as well). By the grace of God, our call was answered after being on hold for around 30-40 min (the others who called when I did had their calls abruptly ended). Avrey and I sat on the call and ended up figuring out a new flight, seat selection, baggage, and COVID requirements. Our new flight was transferred to British Airways. Our baggage information, still incorrect from Aer Lingus, was unfortunately incorrect for BA as well. At about 12:30, Aer Lingus reps arrived. The line was absolutely insane but we were at the front. At first they acted like they could help us… then sent us away with a “I can’t do anything just go to British Airways”. We waited for British Airways who arrived at 1, they got us all checked in and when we came to the bag issue we just said “we paid for 4 bags” and she looked to her manager and her manager said “sounds good, just override what the system says”. We made it through security and are now awaiting to board the largest aircraft I have ever seen. Sad to not be traveling with Violet and Talia to Dublin, but could not be more relieved to feel truly taken care of. Big girl moment for Aves and I. I’m proud of us!!Read more

      Route 66: Abschied

      Der Tag fängt gut an. Bevor wir die Wohnung verlassen, wollen wir testen ob die Wohnungsschlüssel funktionieren. Unsere Vorgänger hatten nämlich schon einige Probleme. Sie funktionieren nicht. Es hilft alles nichts, wir müssen los, da wir die Motorräder und das Auto abgeben müssen. Wir schließen die Tür von innen ab und ziehen sie in der Hoffnung, dass uns am Abend jemand auf macht, zu.
      Wir fahren zum Appartment der Anderen und dann weiter zu Eagle Rider, wo wir die Motorräder abgeben 😥. Ohne eine Panne haben uns die Bikes 2534 Meilen quer durch die USA gebracht.

      Wir geben noch unser Auto ab, holen den Van der anderen ab und belohnen uns anschließend im Hofbräuhaus mit der ein oder anderen Maß und Mittagessen (Schweinshaxe bzw. Brezn 😋). Die Amerikaner versuchen hier gefühlt, alle Traditionen aus Bayern, der Schweiz und Österreich in ein Gebäude zu stopfen, was aber teilweise recht amüsant ist.

      Da wir Angst um unsere Gesundheit haben, ziehen wir nach schon einer Nacht aus unserer WG aus und gesellen uns wieder zum Rest der Gruppe. Obwohl wir etwas improvisiert und teilweise auf dem Boden übernachten, fühlen wir uns hier doch deutlich wohler.

      Da das Wetter heute nicht das beste ist, verbringen wir den Rest des Tages mit Pokern und Blackjack spielen.      Read more

      Last Ride to Chicago

      Es ging wieder über die Brücke zum Harley Museum. Hier hatten wir eine Führung nicht nur durch das eigentliche Museum sondern auch in die Spezial-Räume. Beeindruckend war das Regallager mit unzähligen Modellen.
      Im Museum war alles aufgereiht von den ersten Bikes von 1903 bis zu bekannten Bikes von Elvis und dem Chopper von Peter Fonda aus Easy Rider.
      Dann aber los Richtung Süden. Am Anfang eine Stunde über den unsäglichen Highway, dann durch Illinois bis Chicago über Land. Erwähnenswert eigentlich nur der Halt in Woodstock. Kai stellte noch mal Wurst, Käse und Brot raus. Unsere letzte Mittagsvesper am Van.
      Rein ins heiße Chicago, Bikes bei Eagle Rider abgegeben und ins Hotel Four Points in der Nähe vom Flughafen.
      Abends dann nach Downtown Chicago. Eine beeindruckende Stadt: Die Skyline mit dem Sears Tower vom Lake Michigan aus, die Häuserschluchten in denen das abendliche Leben pulst und besonders schön die Lichter am Chicago River und der Riverwalk.

      So my 14th (!) trip to the US started with a flight to Amsterdam where I had a short layover before heading to Chicago. The flight to Amsterdam was short and sweet, and I didn’t have much of a wait in Amsterdam before the second leg of the journey.

      The big ol’ 747-400 jumbo jet is always impressive, and KLM is a really great airline. Even in economy, I thought the food and service was exceptionally good. The entertainment system screen was a bit on the small side, but among other things I watched an 80s comedy, and a brand new remake of it right after. Of course, I also watched a few episodes of The Big Bang Theory. I don’t think I’ve ever been on a long haul flight that didn’t have that show in their entertainment portfolio.

      After a flight of about 9 hours, we got into Chicago on time. It’s a very busy airport though so it took quite a while to get through immigration etc. Always my least fav part of visiting the US.

      When finally getting out of the airport, I eventually boarded the train for just one stop to Rosemont where I’m staying for the night. It’s about an hour outside the city, but I got a great view of the skyline when approaching the airport.

      I’ve been to Chicago one time before and this time around I won’t be able to make it there since I’m going to the next destination - Indianapolis - already tomorrow afternoon. Chicago is basically just a stop on the way there.

      Rosemont is the host of a major four day comic con called Wizard World. I was also here two years ago, when they had a really cool guest lineup. This year it’s quite dull sadly, but I figured I could stop by on my way to Indianapolis.

      Wizard World opened at 4 pm today which was around the time I arrived at my hotel, just across the venue. I was there for a couple of hours, checking out the many stalls and traders. There were also some interesting picture cars from Jurassic Park, Batman and other movies. Before leaving for the night I visited a panel about the ‘best worst movies’! Pretty amusing. The con was not busy today at all so it was easy to browse and get a feel for it.

      After the con I had dinner at a nice steak house that is connected with my hotel. A table with eight diners close to mine had apparently ordered way too much cake so they gave me their remaining cake... and it turned out to be a HUGE piece that could have fed the whole restaurant!
