    23 Ocak 2024, South Pacific Ocean ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Our final sea day as we will be in Bora Bora tomorrow. We will be happy to be on land and sink our toes in the sand.
Not much going on for us today.
Had lunch with Terry and Beth. Myron went to the pool. Beth went to work on excursions. And Terry and Diana went to the main pool to chat and drink Mai Tais. Terry, Beth and Diana then went to line dancing. Fun but definitely out of shape.
Tonight dinner is surf and turf at the pool grill. A beautiful night, wonderful sunset and a bright moon along with some great friends, conversation and wine.

Welcome to Bora Bora. We were here a little over 10 years ago and it is still paradise.
We docked at 11 and took a tender ashore. We do not have an excursion with the ship.
We caught a Le Truck for $5 each to Marita Beach.
Snorkeled where we saw a sea urchin, blue fish, striped fish and some other fish that don’t photograph well. We shared a burger for lunch, watched the stingrays and headed back to the ship.
Hot and humid but a great day!
A quiet dinner and Diana retired to the cabin for the evening while Myron ventured out to listen to the Viking singers.

Welcome to Tahiti! Cloudy and 81 today with a real feel of 85. We did an excursion with Viking called Maxi Catamaran and Snorkel. If you have never been to the South Pacific and you love the water then these islands are the place you want to be. Beautiful coral and fish. Very friendly people. The current was a little strong so Diana did not make it out to the reef and Myron did not have the camera.
We returned to the ship, showered and then headed out to explore the town. Stopped for beer and pizza and were joined by Harley and Priscilla.
At 6:00 we saw the Tahitian dancers. Tonight we dined at the Chef’s Table with Allison and Warren along with Beth and Terry.
The internet may get sketchy as we sail south to New Zealand so pictures may be added later to a post.

  • 02.01.2024 Bay of Islands New Zealand

    1 Şubat 2024, Yeni Zelanda ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

Welcome to February and to the Bay of Islands, New Zealand.
    Per the web:
The Bay of Islands is a New Zealand enclave encompassing more than 140 subtropical islands next to the country's North Island. It’s known for its undeveloped beaches, big-game fishing and Maori cultural artefacts. It's also home to the 19th-century whaling port of Russell, whose waterfront promenade is lined with remnants from its days as the country’s first colonial capital.
Today is a slight breeze and a high of 81.
    Our Viking excursion today is:
Enjoy scenic cruising around the Bay of Islands during this relaxing excursion across the seas. Meet your friendly crew as you climb on board your flat-bottom vessel, then sit back, relax and soak up the views as you navigate the calm waters of the Bay of Islands. Savor a delicious New Zealand–inspired menu with a selection of meat and side dishes, accompanied by refreshments. Your boat will cruise toward Okiato, with views of the picturesque Omata Estate vineyard and Kororareka Oyster Farm along the way. Stop to explore the quaint town of Russell; despite the beautiful setting it enjoys today, it was once dubbed “unsavory” by the whalers, traders and sealers who frequented here.
What fun we had. Our boat captain Darryl who made us wear disguises as we went around and introduced ourselves so that is the reason for the funny picture.
    What pretty islands.
Dinner was in Manifredi’s tonight with Vicki and Randy. The spaghetti with bolognese was delicious.
    Captured a beautiful sunset.

    2–4 Şub 2024, Yeni Zelanda ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

Hello from Auckland New Zealand. Known as the City of Sails. We are here for 3 days. Today’s high is 78 but very very windy.
Per Wikipedia: Auckland spoken by the Māori: Tāmaki Makaurau) is a large metropolitan city in the North Island of New Zealand. It has an urban population of about 1,478,800 (June 2023). It is located in the greater Auckland Region, the area governed by Auckland Council, which includes outlying rural areas and the islands of the Hauraki Gulf, and which has a total population of 1,739,300 as of June 2023. It is the most populous city of New Zealand and the fifth largest city in Oceania.
We had breakfast on the balcony and watched our sail into the city.
Today we took the ferry over to Waiheke Island and had an all day private excursion sampling wines and eating New Zealand food while exploring the island. Our first stop was Mudbrick Winery. Then on to Te Moto followed by The Batch where we had lunch which was delicious. Myron had Waygu beef and Diana had Mac and cheese with short ribs. Our final stop was Casita Miro which was wine with food pairings. We are wined out so we caught the 4:30 ferry back to Auckland and decided to spend the evening in our cabin watching a movie.

    3 Şubat 2024, Yeni Zelanda ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

We were pretty lazy this morning and had a late breakfast. It is a high of 70 today, windy and rain off and on.
We caught the ferry and go to explore Devonport.
Per Google: Devonport is a relaxed bayside village with upscale cafes and seafood restaurants, as well as classic Kiwi pubs and fish and chips shops. Small boutiques and art dealerships line Victoria Road, while Devonport and Cheltenham beaches draw crowds. The volcanic cone of North Head has harbour views and underground army tunnels. Hikers also climb Mount Victoria, passing reservoir vents decorated as mushrooms.
Devonport hop on hop off bus was not running so we walked around for awhile, grabbed lunch and caught the ferry back to the ship.
The ferries are so clean and such an easy way to island hop.
We then headed into the CBD (Central Business District) and purchased hop on hop off tickets for two days . We rode the complete route which was had great commentary.
When we left the bus we bought tickets to the Sky Tower and proceeded to the 60th floor for amazing views of Auckland.
On our way back to the ship we stumbled upon the oldest brew pub in New Zealand that was established in 1898.
Dinner was small plates of fish tacos and sweet and spicy shrimp at Reign and Pour.
It was a great but long day.

We start at the Wintergarden. There are two greenhouses packed full of plants and flowers. The begonias are larger than Myron’s fist. The grounds are very pretty.
We trek back up the hill to tour the war museum. Very well done with some wonderful war exhibits including the Māori people who are the natives of New Zealand.
After getting back on the bus we headed back towards town to find lunch.
As we meandered the streets we came
across two churches. St Matthew from 1902 and St Patrick from 1842.
We had lunch at White and Wongs at the harbor. The chicken money bags were delicious.
Diana went shopping for a little while and Myron watched the street artist perform.

    6 Şubat 2024, Yeni Zelanda ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

Today we are in Napier New Zealand. A little background on Napier per Wikipedia. Napier (/ˈneɪpiər/ NAY-pee-ər; Māori: Ahuriri) is a city on the eastern coast of the North Island of New Zealand and the seat of the Hawke's Bay region. It is a beachside city with a seaport, known for its sunny climate, esplanade lined with Norfolk pines, and extensive Art Deco architecture. Napier is nicknamed the 'The Art Deco Capital of the world'. The city was destroyed in a 1931 earthquake of 7.8 magnitude earthquake. When they decide to rebuild they did so in the Art Deco style.
We don’t dock until Noon. Myron went to the spa after breakfast and Diana and Vicki went to the Kitchen Table to make hair mask for our specific hair type. A fun, complementary event.
We had Hawke’s Bay wine tour with Viking at 12:45 until 2:00 pm. One of the nicest wine tasting we have ever done. It was in an old house the had vendors from about 15 wineries set up in various rooms and on the lawn. They gave us a glass to keep and we went around and sampled wines. The also had fruit, bread cheese boards spread out throughout to nibble on.
When we had finished we walked around town taking the art deco architecture. We stopped at the Waipahu Cathedral. The interior was pretty plain.
Once we returned to the ship, Diana went to the Spa pool and Myron to the infinity pool.
Dinner was again in The Restaurant and salted caramel dessert was as good as it looked.
Retired to our cabin to catch up on the Russell Lee lecture.

  • 02.07.2024 Wellington, New Zealand

    7 Şubat 2024, Yeni Zelanda ⋅ 🌬 63 °F

We docked in Wellington at 9:00 am.

Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, sits near the North Island’s southernmost point on the Cook Strait. A compact city, it encompasses a waterfront promenade, sandy beaches, a working harbour and colourful timber houses on surrounding hills. From Lambton Quay, the iconic red Wellington Cable Car heads to the Wellington Botanic Gardens. Strong winds through the Cook Strait give it the nickname "Windy Wellington."

Wellington lived up to its name as it was very windy today. Still warm sunshine and 76 degrees. Still living in shorts and t-shirts.

We got a late start as Diana didn’t feel well to start the day.
We were still off the ship around 10:30 and caught the free shuttle into town, walked about 5 blocks and caught the cable car to the top of the city. We walked down through the botanical gardens which were lovely and continued on through the cemetery. Spent the last of our New Zealand dollars on a few souvenirs.

Tonight we have dinner in Manfredi’s the Italian restaurant with Randy, Vicki, Paul and Donna. She ch a fun group and tonight’s special pasta was lasagna. Delicious.
A beautiful sunset as we sail Cook Strait which is between north and south New Zealand. The infamous Aotearoa , long white cloud in Maori.

  • 02.12.2024 Melbourne Australia Day 1/2

    12–13 Şub 2024, Avustralya ⋅ 🌙 66 °F

    Melbourne Australia per Google :
Australia's cultural melting pot: a place where stunning architecture and a vibrant arts scene combine to put on a constant performance to rival that of New York or Paris.
    Sunrise from our balcony.
Today we are spending outside the city on a private tour with 7 other folks. Warren (Alison is still quarantined) Paul(who put the tour together and his wife Joyce, Mark and Trisha, Don and Kully. We are doing the Great Ocean Road Tour. Here is a brief recap: Discover Australia’s Great Ocean Road on this day trip from Melbourne. Admire the natural beauty of Victoria’s coastline, from surfing beaches to the Twelve Apostles rock formations. You’ll make stops at seaside villages, watch for wildlife like parrots and koalas, and travel through the Otway Ranges .
While waiting for our driver we saw lots of parrots in the trees above us. Rainbow lorikeets.

Our first stop was Lorne Beach. Diana put her feet in the water. Saw lots of cockatiels.
We saw Koalas in the wild sleeping.

We stopped at Apollo Bay for lunch.
Our driver/guide Dominic knows a lady who runs a wildlife preserve. We stopped and fed wombats, parrots, island kangaroos and the star of the show, koalas. They are so soft. We hated to leave but we had to get to our final stop The Twelve Apostles.

The Twelve Apostles is a collection of limestone stacks off the shore of Port Campbell National Park, by the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia.
Their proximity to one another has made the site a popular tourist attraction. Eight of the original nine stacks remain standing at the Twelve Apostles' viewpoint, after one collapsed in July 2005. Though the view from the promontory by the Twelve Apostles never included twelve stacks, additional stacks—not considered part of the Apostles group—are located to the west within the national park. They were formed 15 to 5 million years ago - Wikipedia.
Long drive back to the ship but it was all so worth it.

  • 02.13.2024 Melbourne, Australia Day 2/2

    13 Şubat 2024, Avustralya ⋅ 🌩️ 75 °F

Our second day in Melbourne and today we explore the city. We caught the 109 bus to CBD (Central Business District) (thanks Terry and Beth for the tickets).
We explore the street art of Melbourne and catch a tram to Victoria Market. (Diana was looking for the Christmas Store so she could purchase a Nativity set.)Found it! This store was over the top. So much to see.
We locate a few more alleyways to see a little more street art and then ride the train back to CBD where we tour St Paul Cathedral.

St Paul Cathedral is the home church for Anglicans in Melbourne and throughout Victoria. It is a beautiful place of prayer and worship with a vibrant and diverse community of members from more than 25 nations.
St Paul’s Cathedral has been an integral part of Christian Melbourne since the city’s foundation: it stands on the site where the first public Christian services in Melbourne were led by Dr Alexander Thomson in 1836.From 1836 to 1848 the site on which the Cathedral stands served as a corn market for the growing city. In 1848, it was granted to the Anglican Church to build the bluestone St Paul’s Parish Church. Consecrated in 1852, St Paul’s Church was used until 1885 when it was demolished to make way for the liturgical West-end of the present Cathedral.

The Cathedral’s foundation stone was laid in 1880, and work continued for eleven years, leading to the consecration of St Paul’s Cathedral on 22 January 1891.The construction of the three spires did not begin until 1926, to a revised design of John Barr of Sydney rather than the original design of an octagonal central tower and gable west end towers of Butterfield. The central spire is the second highest in the Anglican Communion, after Salisbury Cathedral.

We take off again and visit the Block Arcade and Royal Arcade.

The Royal Arcade was proudly the first arcade in Melbourne and is the longest-standing arcade in Australia. Its historical significance is profound and underpinned by the fact that, as a significant Victorian era building, it is part of the Victorian Heritage Register.
It a long alleyway full of shops and restaurants.
We picked up the 109 tram and returned to the ship.
We put on a little over 12,000 steps so with Myron’s knees, not a bad day.
Spent the rest of the afternoon by the main pool enjoying the views of Melbourne.
We have thunderstorms moving in so we are glad we are on the ship.
Dinner tonight in the Restaurant with Paul and Lisa who live on our street as we call it. Also new folks Bob and Patti.

  • 02.14.2024 Phillip Island, Australia

    14 Şubat 2024, Avustralya ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

Happy Valentine’s Day! We are on anchored off the coast of Phillip Island. It’s very cool today. 64 degrees but sunny. And of course windy. It’s a nice reprieve from the 97 degrees we experienced yesterday in Melbourne.

Phillip Island forms a natural breakwater for the shallow waters of the Western Port. It is 26 km (16 mi) long and 9 km (5.6 mi) wide, with an area of about 101 km2 (40 sq mi).[4] It has 97 km (60 mi) of coastline and is part of the Bass Coast Shire.
A 640 m (2,100 ft) concrete bridge (originally a wooden bridge) connects the mainland town San Remo with the island town Newhaven.[4] In the 2021 census, the island's permanent population was 13,799

Phillip Island is home to Australia's largest colony of little penguins, with an impressive 40,000 breeding penguins found on the Summerland Peninsula. The little penguin is not only the smallest of all penguins weighing around 1kg but also the only penguin with blue and white feathers.

Myron spent his morning at the spa and Diana had a class where we made our own body scrub. It was very fun. We did tender to shore but there was a huge storm last night so they were without power which meant the stores were not open and if they were they only took cash. Melbourne was also without power so our timing to leave there was excellent.

Our included excursion was to see the penguins as they come ashore by the hundreds at sunset. Photos are not allowed but this is what they look like. Diana’s favorite part was the wallaby drinking.

Myron went to the Spa and Diana worked updating the photo books. It’s an arduous task but I don’t want to wait until we are home as it would probably never get done.
We attended Russell Lee’s lecture “When OZ went to Paraguay-the Amazing Story of New Australia”.
Don’t you just love his titles? He makes his lectures so fun. Oh and a fact, his tie always represents what he is talking about.
We had lunch in the World Cafe where a

  • 02.16.2024 Eden, Australia

    16 Şubat 2024, Avustralya ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

It’s a nice day in Eden. A light breeze and 74. Diana again didn’t feel well (darn digest issues) so Myron did our Viking excursion today. “Two Fold Bay Catamaran” the warm breezes of Twofold Bay carry you through pristine landscapes from the water during a catamaran cruise. Sit back and relax as your catamaran skims the azure waters, taking in the magnificent vistas of Twofold Bay. As you cruise along the coast, admire the views of Ben Boyd National Park and the stunning shoreline, blanketed with forests and historic buildings. Your knowledgeable crew will furnish you with information about your surroundings, and the harbor, which is one of the deepest natural harbors in the Southern Hemisphere.
Diana was much better by noon so she joined Myron on shore to visit the small fishing village of Eden.
The eastern coastline has rugged cliffs at the southern end a wide, sandy surf beach, Aslings Beach, north of the cliffs. The beach ends at the entrance to Lake Curalo, a safe boating inlet of Twofold Bay. Although the urban settlement of Eden commenced in 1843 the settlement was not officially proclaimed as a township until 20 March 1885. The town's main industries include fishing, forestry, and tourism.
The Eden Killer Whale Museum informs visitors of the history of whaling in the area and the role of orcas (killer whales) led by Old Tom in herding whales into the harbour and helping whalers kill them. The whalers rewarded the orcas by allowing them to eat the lips and tongues of the dead whales.
