    Day 25 Coral Bay to Tulki Beach via Exmouth

    Relatively short drive. 100+k to Exmouth, refuel, lunch at Frothies brewery then another 50k to Tulki Beach. Driving past Learmonth Airbase we stopped and checked out the Krait and Potshot memorial. It was from here the Kraft set off on its now famous raid on Singapore Harbour. Tulki Beach is part of a Ningaloo Reef and Cape Range National Park. It is a campground for only 11 fully self contained vehicles. There is no Telstra setvice (maybe 1 bar at the top the the highest sand dune). The water is a stunning turquoise colour but there are high winds at the moment and it is quite cold. Wandered down the beach and discovered two Ospreys in a nest on the beach. The swimming and snorkeling here is supposed to be superb when the weather is right.Meer informatie

    Day 26 Tulki Beach and Yardie Gorge

    Went for a drive south from Tulki Beach to check out the other beaches down south towards Yardie Creek. We stopped at Turquoise Bay which is supposed to be awesome swimming. Unfortunately it is blowing a gale again. There are several beaches between Tulki Beach and Yardie creek, all of them stunning. At Yardie Creek Karen and I decided to do the Yardie Gorge walk. It is a grade 4 but only 2km. Saw a bunch of Rock Wallabies sunning on the Gorge walks. The walk was quite steep and difficult at times but well worth it. We headed back to Tulki Beach via the information Centre and came across two Australian Bustards (Bush Turkeys, not the common scrub turkeys we normally see). They look like mini Emus with a weird walk. Wandered down the beach in the evening and wandered around in the low tides. Blue spotted Rays where wallowing in the water less than a metre from shore.     Day 27 Tulki Beach and Mandu Mandu Gorge

    Woke up hoping the wind has dropped, no such luck. Headed off early to do the Mandu Mandu Gorge walk. It is 3km grade 4 and the estimate about 2 hours. The wind was very strong and bloody cold. The walk into the Gorge was via a dry creek bed full of smooth rocks. The return journey we had to play mountain goats up and down the sides of the Gorge. It made for quite a difficult walk. Had a relatively quiet afternoon. The wind finally dropped about 5pm. There must have been a few whale sharks just the other side of the reef from our beach. There was a hatch, four tourist boats and two aircraft in the same location for a few hours. Had a bbq dinner with Chris and Rog and a few wines before retiring. This area of WA has one spectacular sunsets.Meer informatie

    Day 28 Exmouth

    We thought the wind had finally settled but to no avail, woke about 2am to the strongest winds we have experienced on this trip. Could not get back to sleep. Got up at 6am and due to the wind it was a challenge opening the door of the van, kept wanting to slam shut. We packed up in the wind (thankfully not much to pack up) and headed back to Exmouth. The wind had settled down as soon as we reached Exmouth. My brother Reg and sister in law Peta were also in Exmouth so we all headed out for dinner across the road from the caravan park. The bar was called Cadillacs and was an American Country Music themed establishment. It was ok. Big drive tomorrow to Point SamsonMeer informatie

    Day 29 Exmouth to Karratha

    Got up early for the 540k drive to Karratha. Had a visitor wandering the caravan park early this morning. This was the first emu we had seen in the whole trip. Copped a head wind most of the way which played havoc with my fuel economy. Haven’t been in Karratha since 1983 on training with the Australian Army. It has changed a lot and seems more like a small city with trendy bars etc. I suppose the mining dollars being spent. The Caravan parks are full so we got a 48 stay for free at the council overflow parking at the Karratha Country Club. You have to be self contained but that is fine. It is also only about 1k from the bars and restaurants. As it is full moon tonight we headed out to Hearsons Cove Burrup Peninsula to witness the Stairways to the moon. This is when there is a full moon an the reflection on the water makes it look like there are steps all the way to the moon. It was actually a very good location. Heaps of vehicles there all for the same thing. Had dinner at the Country Clib near where the van is parked out. Will have dinner in town tmw, off to check out Dampier, Point Samson, Cossack etc tmwMeer informatie

    Day 30 Around Karratha

    Day 30 Around Karratha.
    Jeez what a surprise it was blowing a gale again this morning and cold. A bloke at the bar last night mentioned it was the coldest he had seen for over 10 years, just my luck. Headed to Point Samson this morning to have a Gekko, glad we didn’t stay there. Bugger all to do. It could have been better is it wasn’t so windy. Went and checked out the old pearling town of Cossack it is different to what I remember but worth seeing the history. Headed back and checked out Dampier then out to Ngajarli (Deep George) - Burrup Peninsula to check out the hieroglyphs. It was very impressive. Shame it was still blowing a gale. They reckon there are over a million hieroglyphs ranging over thousands of years in this small area. The overflow area we are staying in is no chokkas full of vans. Went into Karratha and had dinner in Stadium 26 sports bar. I had 1kg of mussels in Chilli sauce. It was the best chilli mussels I have had in a few years. Heading to 80 Mile Beach tmw on our way to Broome. Hope this bloody wind pisses offMeer informatie

    Day 31 80 Mile Beach

    Early start this morning for 470k drive to 80 Mile Beach. Encountered some very wide loads heading south where we had to pull off the road until they passed. Called into Port Hedland to fuel up and to check out the Esplanade Hotel. My Dad did some work up here in the late 30’s and mentioned drinking at the Esplanade Hotel. Next to the Fuel station was the Don Rhodes Mining Museum with some old locomotives and ore trucks. There was even a Valentine tank from
    WWII converted to be a mining dozer. Very impressive little collection. The port of hedland was huge, I counted 5 of those massive ore buckets for loading ore carriers but probably a lot more. Another 100+ k to
    80 mile beach caravan park. This park is huge and packed. Got an unpowered site which is ok as my lithium and solar working well. I think my boss in Canberra wound love this place. 80 miles of beach fishing. There are people here with quad bikes and trailers loaded up with fishing rods. Heaps of 4wd’s up and down the beach. Guess what ? NO BLOODY WIND. It was 27c when we arrived, it is now 6.15 pm and I am sitting outside in a tshirt having a beer.
    They have a nice war memorial here at the park. As the beach is very shallow the tide goes out a very long way. Makes for some very impressive optical illusions with the clouds reflecting off water. This is probably the warmest night of the whole trip. Off to Broome tmw and currently it is 25c there.     Day 32 Cable Beach Broome

    Woke up before sunrise and as it was low tide I decided to wander out as far as I could 30 minutes walking amd I still did not reach the low tide mark. There was only one other person on the whole beach. Headed off for Broome at 7.30am. Filled up at Sandfire Flat roadhouse. This used to have the reputation of being very expensive but it is now at least 20c cheaper than Nullabor. Arrived in Cable Beach about 1pm, relatively boring drive but very nice road. The caravan park is massive and the sites are very big. Most people look like retry are here for months at a time. Wandered down to cable beach and had dinner at Zanders just above the beach.     Day 33 Cable Beach

    Last night caught up with Liz Mudge who was staying in the sane caravan park. Liz and I served in the same unit in the army nearly 40 years ago. It was great to have a beer and catch up in such a great location. The weather !!! Woohoo it is 29c and no bloody wind, had a lot of running around to do today but got to visit Malcolm Douglas’s Croc Farm today. Good to see but a bit tired. Went for a drive along cable beach this late in the arvo and the crowds were already swarming for the sunset on Cable Beach ritual. It was like a bloody highway. Two lots of camel teams were operating. Dropped the car back at the caravan park and took a cooler filled with beer and wine. Had fish a d chips on the grass overlooking Cable Beach.     Day 34 Broome

    A bit of an admin day before we choof off and head north. Spent the morning cleaning the car inside and out. It has amassed a lot of grime over 9600k. I suppose it will be messy again before hone but at least looks ok now. Headed to Matso’s Brewery for lunch. Tried the mango beer, too sweet for me. Went down to Cable Beach for a few drinks at the resort bar before dinner and watched the procession of 4wds returning from the sunset drinks on Cable Beach.     Day 36 Lake Argyle

    Today was a “let’s drive and see what happens”. The target was Kununurra or Lake Argyle. We had planned to go to Bungle Bungle Caravan Park but fully booked. We had heard Kununurra and Lake Argyle was the same, we rang Lake Argyle and they don’t take short notice bookings but to arrive snd see what they have. We arrived about 2pm not sure what to expect. Apparently they had turned away 15 caravans before us. 10 minutes before we arrived a van checked out early and we managed to score their spot. The last powered (or unpowered) site for a van our size. Even the park manager said we were really lucky. We are a day ahead of schedule and planned for two days around Kununurra. We have booked in here for 3 nights. Heaps to do. Our site is about 50 metres from the bar (handy) and 10m from ablutions, washing machines etc. a short 50m walk takes us up to the infinity pool which I am sure we will visit tomorrow. After dinner we got chatting to
    Our neighbour in the van park and his wife are originally from Ireland. Ended up having a great night where out of six people 4 were Irish and 2 were Aussie. Great laughs. Called it quits at 10pm, jeez I am getting soft.    Meer informatie

    Day 37 Lake Argyle

    After a late night we decided to take a 700m short hike down Jessie’s trail to the swimming pontoon to see if there are any Freshwater Crocs. Little did I know it would turn into a Stairmaster extreme workout. I seem to be getting good at selecting mountain goat tracks. Torture complete we went for a spin into Kununurra. There was Saturday morning markets on and we had a wander around. Nothing really worth purchasing. Drove out to Ivanhoe Crossing (Kununurra’s natural under body car wash complete with crocodile concierges ). We crossed over and headed out to Black Rock Falls. No ester coming over the falls but a nice place. There were butterflies everywhere, probably more than I have seen in one place. I had not lowered my tyre pressure from towing the van so the drive out to black rock falls was pretty jarring (36psi on front and 45 on back ). I decided to try out my new campsmart tyre deflaters. There are four of them and you disk up the pressure you would like your tyres at. I selected 20psi on each and proceeded to deflate the tyres. The incar tyre pressure monitoring system (Tpms) showed 31 psi on 3 tyres and 35 psi on the last. I need to play around with these more. It was however a smoother ride back. Crossed the Ivanhoe Crossing again and got flagged down at the other side, my number plate was dangling. Another job to do. Made a temp fix, we fuelled up and headed back to Argyle. Having a quiet night tonight, went over and grabbed a take away fish and chips from the bar they had a bloke up on stage singing classics like “True Blue” “blowing in the wind” and a bunch of others.     Day 38 Lake Argyle

    Spending the day checking out Lake Argyle area. Went down to the dam wall and checked out the force of water being released. Apparently there is enough water to keep the Ord River flowing for 14 years of no rain. We went and checked the replica of the Durack homestead. It has been built as a museum, very interesting. Went on the 24 minute Lake Argyle helicopter scenic flight. The helicopter is a Robinson 44, a four seat version of the popular Robinson 22 mustering helicopter. No doors on the front. Gave Karen the front seat and I had the back. Was a very different view of Lake Argyle and the Ord River Dam scheme. We flew over the quarry where all the rock was gathered for the wall. Apparently they blasted the rock out snd it was tyre largest chemical explosion in Australia at the time. There was quite a bit of wind around (again) and the little machine got buffered around a bit.     We are leaving the state tomorrow and heading to Katherine. Managed to get into a van park for two nights.
    We are parked near the front of the van park and see most vehicles coming and going. On the trip the largest proportion of van towing rigs have been Toyota Landcruiser LC200s. It seems in WA especially the Nissan Patrol Y62 is give the land cruiser a run for its money. Seen more Y62s in WA than the anywhere else. The Irish neighbour in the van park has one and is very happy with them. Interesting to see the varying vehicles and how much money has been spent kitting them out. The internet and phone access died here at midday and has not been restored as at 9pm. Interesting to note they were still using radio towers for comms until the telephone was installed in the mid to late 70s and we whinge when we have no internet now.

    Goodbye WA it’s been fun. 30 minutes after heading off this morning we hit the NT border. The border checks are at Timber Creek and not at the actual border. A relatively boring and uneventful drive to Katherine. Arrived about 3pm (forgot about the time adding 1.5 hours as we are back in NT).     Day 40 Katherine

    Early start and headed to Katherine Gorge. Did the 4 Km trek. A massive colony of flying foxes have made their hone in the trees just outside the park reception centre. Noisy critters. The walk was good and not too mountain goaty. Left the Gorge and drive straight to the Katherine hot springs. Spent an hour wallowing in the warm water. It was very refreshing. Had a lazy afternoon but caught up with an army mate Blacky this evening. He is heading north to Darwin and we were both staying in Katherine the same night. Been a few years between beers.

    Heading south towards Alice Springs tomorrow. Will stop about half way down for the night, maybe Banka Banka or Jenner Springs    Meer informatie

    Day 41 Renner Springs

    Katherine to Renner Springs
    Really just a day of driving with a stop in Daly Waters to check out the Pub. There was a lot of other vans doing the same thing. There was one van there exactly the same as ours including the same spare wheel cover from ARV where we purchased our van they weee also towing it with a Ford Ranger. We had a chat with the owners snd got some pictures together. They are from Tasmania. I remember the owner of ARV telling me about an XTC he delivered to Tassie. This was the one. Daly Waters was an interesting place to visit. Obviously catering to the tourists now. That is a good thing to keep these historic quirky places alive. Arrived in Renner Springs about 3pm. I was sort of expecting Katherine or Mataranka springs, nope. Got to feel sorry dpr the owners, they have more people coming through but do not have the backpackers to work the kitchens and bars. Every spot we have stopped is advertising for staff. We had a meal and came back to the van having a play with our night photos from the iPhone. We have booked Alice from tomorrow but will try to change it to spend a night in WycliffeWell, supposedly UFO capital of Australia and gateway to Devils Marbles. Will see how we go tomorrow. We stayed here due to a recommendation. Our site is less than 20m from the highway and the road trains are blasting past. Hope they are not driving all nightMeer informatie

    Day 42 Off to Alice Springs

    We had planned to stay at Wycliffe Wells, supposedly the UFO capital of Australia. On viewing the place we decided to keep going to Alice. The trip took us past Tennant Creek (didn’t bother stopping) and Barrow Creek. It is only 13km from Barrow Creek where Peter Falconio went missing, Barrow Creek was their last stop heading north. The pub has its normal collection of miscellaneous stuff but this one also has a collection TAC plates (military identification plates on vehicles). I recognised some SIG ones there. Called in and checked out Devils Marbles on the way. We had already changed our caravan park booking in Alice and could not get in early so got a park behind a pub in Alice near the Casino for one night. It was non powered but we could stay hooked up. Went and had dinner at Lassiters Casino. Not as tired and run down as I thought it might be. My last visit to the casino was 1983. Forgot how cold it gets in Alice, was bloody freezing walking back to the van park after dinner.

    SATNAV in vehicle. With my Ford Ranger I have apple car play. My satnav app of choice has been Waze. However while I like Waze in cities and on the eastern highways I have found Google maps far better on this trip. Will see how I go when I get back if I go back to Waze.    Meer informatie

    Day 43 A day in Alice

    We are now commencing week 7 of our journey, just over a week and a half to go. 1260km done with a few thousand to go. Bloody cold this morning( not as cold as Canberra), about 3c, packed up and moved the van to the new park about 2km from the Todd St Mall. Pulled into the site snd so far seems ok. Went into the Mall and had a wander about checking out the town centre. Checked out some aboriginal art galleries (not my normal thought of entertainment). Some of the prices were astronomical, upwards of $70,000. Got most of our admin stuff sorted today, booked Uluru Campground and the “Sounds of Silence” dinner under the stars overlooking Uluru for Sunday night. Went for a spin up to the Anzac memorial on a hill overlooking the town. Great views over Alice.

    Things I got right and wrong on this trip

    Right
    1. The car storage behind the front seats, a bunch of pockets that hook to the seat and hang down. Very hand for iPads, portable chargers, spare handheld radio etc
    2. Two occy straps between the back seat grab handles to store hats.
    3. Storing hoses (grey and fresh) on van back bumper
    4. Investing in lithium batteries with 3000w inverter
    5. Spare toilet cassette
    6. Telstra nighthawk with 400g data

    Wrong
    1. Carrying 15kg of firewood and only used the fire pit once
    2. Carrying an esky in case I needed it once. Takes up space.
    3. Too many clothes and footwear. Could have easily halved it

    Day 44 Around Alice

    Got up early and headed about 130k out of Alice to Orminston Gorge. For 60k out we travelled on the same road that leads out to Hermannsburg aboriginal community. There was a few abandoned cars on the road. One we got there it was blowing a gale and bloody cold. Heaps of dead fish in the pool at the bottom of the cliffs. Apparently normal in winter when there is not enough oxygen in the water to sustain the fish. We opted not to walk up to the look out as the wind would have been worse up there. We jumped back in the car and worked our way back to Alice Springs. A few stop offs to visit on the way. Called into the Ochre Pits. I was impressed with the colours of the ochre. I have never seen ochre pits like this before. A few more stops on the way back ( more gorges and water holes). Once back in Alice we had lunch and checked out a few more aboriginal art galleries. I have never been an art aficionado but I was impressed with Tommy Crow paintings, not quite aboriginal and not quite contemporary. Haven’t quite decided which one I like enough to purchase yet. A lot of indigenous in Todd Mall selling aboriginal art prints. I have played a bit with night photos natively from my iPhone 12, now I have downloaded nightcap and a few other apps to manipulate the camera. Looking forward to trying it at Uluru tomorrow. Had a quick read of SA Border restriction changed and it looks like there are no restrictions for us entering from NT. An interesting activity by police in NT (mostly Katherine and Alice) is they are present at every bottle shop. You have to present your ID and explain where you plan to drink the alcohol, ie we had to name the caravan park we are staying at, this is before you enter the store. We also have to supply ID when paying. They record your ID and purchased . Apparently this is to prevent people going to multiple bottle shops, buying bulk alcohol then taking it out to settlements and selling for huge mark ups. Not sure how well this is working as the indigenous person in front of me was purchasing 4 bottles of bundy rum. I asked about purchasing restrictions as there was in Northern WA. There are apparently no restrictions until 6pm when you are restricted to one bottle (or equivalent) of wine.Meer informatie

    Day 45 Uluru

    450k from Alice Springs to Uluru. Headed off about 7am and arrived Ayers Rock Campground about midday. Filled up at the Shell Uluru, $2.06 per litre for diesel, the most expensive of the trip. The queue at the campground reception was chaos, line out the door and down the road, only two of the four terminals operating and very slow. Took us one hour in the queue. We have since heard others have waited 2 hours. We have booked the “Sounds of Silence “ dinner departing from the front of the campground at 4.55pm. We were there at 4.55pm but nowhere did it say go to the bus stop down the road. By the time we got to the bus stop we didn’t know if the bus had gone or not. No numbers to ring or any contact details provided. 5.30pm another bus tells us our bus left at 4.55pm. They organised another vehicle to take us out there ( it appears this is common). I was not a happy camper at this stage. We got dropped off and walked up the hill to the drinks and Canapés. The only beer was Hahn mid strength. My experience is not getting any better yet. At least the view of Uluru and the sunset was very good. Headed down the hill for dinner and things started improving. There was a didgeridoo being played as we were seated. The red wine was ok but the food was fantastic, crocodile, kangaroo, lamb, barramundi and lots of it. Meal finished we had a lights out stargazing lecture. It as actually really good. It is the first time I have been able to identify the “Dark Emu” in the sky. Back to the tables for dessert and port then bus back to the campground. After the rocky start it ended up being a really enjoyable night. Arrived back at caravan about 10pm. Apart from the chaos on checking in the caravan park is very spacious and the individual sites are quite large. Heaps of room for caravan, awning and vehicle.

    Got up at sparrow fart to head out to the sunrise viewing platform. It is maybe 20+k from the campground. No need for me to navigate to
    It, I just followed the headlights of all the others vehicles doing the same thing. It was bloody cold, maybe 3C. Was good to see though. Headed back for brekky then off exploring. Went for a wander around the bottom of Ayers Rock near the water hole then over to the Cultural Centre.

    Day 47 Coober Pedy

    Decided to smash 730k and go straight from Uluru to Coober Pedy. Have to say the Stuart Highway is even more boring than the Nullabor. There had to be at least 40 or 50 car wrecks on the side of the road in varying stages of destruction. On the Lassiter Highway (road from Uluru to Stuart Highway) there is an abandoned roadhouse called Mt Ebenezer. It cannot have been abandoned for too long as the ATM is still inside. I am quite sure it was emptied long ago. Nothing else really if nots on the Highway down. Heading into Coober Pedy looks more like the moons surface than any of the old gold mining towns in WA. Most caravan parks are full but we got a site with power but no water ( no probs we have 190l of our own). The 360 degree cafe was recommended so we decided to walk from the van park to the cafe/bar, 50m from the caravan park it started raining so back to get raincoats and umbrellas. If this place is one of the better places in town don’t think I will be eating out again, let’s see what tmw brings. As we get back to the van and prepare for bed it starts bucketing down.     Day 48 Coober Pedy

    Had some very heavy downpours last night. Opened the van door this morning and was confronted with a bloody big puddle where there was no dry exit for me. Our muck mat had drifted away and my sandals had drifted somewhere. Found out muck mat under the neighbour’s van and my sandals near the other neighbours vehicle( on a side note, would love the neighbours dual cab Ute, a Chevy Silverado z71 6.2l v8 beast). Got a refund for the night and moved to a drier site. Off we went to explore Coober Pedy. Checked out the “Old Timers Mine”. It was really good. Would have been a hard life mining here in the early days but potential huge rewards. The town is pretty ordinary and restaurants on the lower end of the star rating but they is all there is on offer here. We were thinking of staying another day but think we will choof off and head south tomorrowMeer informatie

    Goodbye Coober Pedy. Stretches of crap road south of Coober Pedy with undulating road or dips. Plays havoc with the van. Still heaps of cars in various states of deterioration on the side of the road. Decided to call into Woomera to have a look. This is the closest I have seen to a seemingly abandoned fairly modern town or ghost town. There were cars in driveways etc but not one person walking in the street or other cars driving around. Very spooky. If this is still a functioning RAAF base I would hate to get posted here. Stopped in to fuel up in Port Augusta and caught up with a good friend Rachael for coffee. Rachael is ex navy and now a South Australian copper. Tough gig being a copper in PA. Great to catch up but too short. Will make it longer next time. Vic had screwed up my travel plans again with the snap 5 day lockdown. We were thinking of stopping near Adelaide to catch up with some friends but have decided to full steam ahead back to NSW. Staying at Port Germein tonight, about 60k south of Port Augusta. It has the longest jetty in SA at 1.5k. Bloody storm with very strong winds came through just after we set up on the van park. Cleared in about 30 minutes and now clear skies. Went down to the local for a quick beer, tiny pub with a few locals inside. Would be packed with 20 people inside.
