  • Walves Bay, Namibia. Day 1.

    31. marts 2023, Namibia ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

We did not have anything booked for today, so we shared a taxi to a resort town Swakopmund about 30 min away from the port. We passed beautiful neighborhood along the water, stopped to see pink flamingos and sand dunes.
The town acceded our expectations. Very clean, beautiful architecture, feels very safe.
We walked around the town, stopping at the art galleries, finally we found a German restaurant that looked good to us.
I asked what is their special dish and the waitress named a dish. I thought it is a sausage with mashed potatoes, but when she delivered….that was a huge surprise!
That was the leg of some kind of animal.
The meet was delicious, but I could only finish 1/5 of it.
After lunch, we decided to find a Barber shop for Boris. It did not take us long and he got a haircut for $5 plus $2 tip.
More walking and enjoying the town and at 4:30pm we came back to the car with a driver and he took us back to the ship.
It was a very good day in a beautiful place with nice cool weather.

  • Walves Bay, Namibia. Day 2

    1. april 2023, Namibia ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

On our second day in Walves Bay we had a private tour to Naukluft Park Sandwich Harbour.
There were 12 in our group in three 4x4 cars.
A wonderful tour - going to Sandwich Harbor dunes, seeing birds, wetlands and wildlife.
At the end a picnic of Oysters, meat, fish and desert accompanied with a glass of Champaign for lunch.
As these were not enough, on the way to the ship we stopped at the local restaurant for more food. Everything was delish.
Boris did not go with us, too much walking in a deep sand, so I deliver some food for him.
    Beautiful day!

  • Luderitz, Namibia

    2. april 2023, South Atlantic Ocean ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

    Our third day in Namibia.
We arrived in Luderitz by 10:00am, got out and immediately booked a local tour to a ghost town Kolmanskop. The town is a short 15 min drive from the port.
In the beginning of 20th century there was only a railway station, until one railway worker found a stone that happened to be a diamond.
It took only few year to be a prosperous German town in the middle of the desert.
The town had doctors, nurses, hospital.
It had local rail system that delivered food to every house and provided transportation for ladies to go shopping or visit friends.

Later in 1928 diamonds were discovered south of that town, people moved south.
In 1960, the last people left town and in the 80s it became a tourist site.
We toured few houses, but it was hard for Boris to walk on the sand and stairs.
By 12:00pm we came back on the ship, had a quick lunch, assembled a wheelchair and went to see the town we docked in.
Interesting old German architecture. It was Sunday, so most places were closed.
In addition, I felt very tired. We walked for an hour and came back.

The rest of the day I slept with a break for a quick dinner.
    Tomorrow is a sea day.

  • Cape Town, SA. Day 1 of 3

    4. april 2023, Sydafrika ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

Today is our first day in Cape Town and it’s a second event for World cruisers.
At 10am we got on the coach and after an hour of drive arrived at a beautiful wine estate.
We were met with a music, endless wine, food and perfect weather. Everything was perfect, except there was something wrong with me.
I tried beer….it did not taste right, then wine. Wine was not good. Could not eat much. Even water was not good.
    Still I enjoyed the event.
After coming back on the ship at 4:00pm, we rested a while and decided to go for a walk. We went to a beautiful waterfront area with lots of shops, restaurants, sculptures. After walking for an hour, we got a gelato and came back to the ship. I was very tired. Tomorrow we are going on a long tour.

  • Cape Town, SA. Day 2

    5. april 2023, Sydafrika ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

We got up at 6:00am, had a quick breakfast and were on our way out at 7:15am. Still did not fill better, but there was an exiting tour ahead of us.
At 7:30am we met with our guide, a delightful man.
Our first stop was a colourful neighbourhood Bo-Kaap. It’s one of the oldest and most historic residential areas in Cape Town.
We continued South, passing beautiful areas and stopping to take pictures. Our guide, Danny, was telling us about everything we passed … History past and present.
We passed some of the most expensive neighbourhoods in South Africa. Beautiful houses with amazing sea views.
We stopped at the Boulder beach to see African penguins.

African Penguins used to be known as jackass penguins because of their distinctive braying, and they’re the only penguins found on the continent. Colonies can be found from southern Namibia all the way around the South African coast to Port Elizabeth, but few places offer as remarkable a viewing point as Boulders Beach.

We continue to Simon town. Danny made reservation for us for lunch at seafood restaurant. Everyone in our group enjoyed food, except me. By now I really did not feel myself.
We continue to the Cape of Good Hope.

A common misconception is that the Cape of Good Hope is the southern tip of Africa, based on the misbelief that the Cape was the dividing point between the Atlantic and Indian oceans. In fact, the southernmost point of Africa is Cape Agulhas about 150 kilometres to the east-southeast.

We also took a cable car to visit a lighthouse and saw few baboons.

By the time we came back on the ship at almost 6:30pm, I was in a pretty bad shape. I had a fever and was extremely tired.
Boris went to eat, but I stayed in cabin and went right to bed.

Hope to feel better tomorrow as we have a plan to visit Table Top Mountain.

  • Durban, SA

    9. april 2023, Sydafrika ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

After missing Mosel Bay port day and another sea day, I feel a little better and ready for the tour in Durban.
For today I booked a 6 hours Zulu safari tour.
We met our guide few minutes before 8:00am and in about 5 min another couple from our ship joined us. Then we waited for 25 minutes more for four more people that never came. Good, more room for us.
We drove for an hour out of the city, stopping one’s to pick up some apple for elephants.
We arrived at Natal Park and few minutes later saw a group of four male lions, further on we visited elephants and got close and personal. They really like apples.
We saw some 🦓s and then moved to another park for more animals.
Glad we booked a mini safari tour as it would be too difficult and not safe for Boris to be in the city.

Today we had an early start. We got up at 4:50am, had coffee and by 5:45am met with our group of 6.
Our destination today is a day in Hluhluwe Game Reserve, which is about 90 min drive from Richards Bay port.
This is the first African Reserve from 1895.
When we arrived at the Reserve, we were treated to a tea, coffee and cookies.
The ride was fun and very comfortable.
Back at the camp, we had nice lunch with wine and beer.
After lunch we drove some more and saw more animals.
Back in our original van by 12:30pm.
By 2:00pm we were back on the ship. Dropped all our stuff in the cabin, got passports and went to face-to-face immigration inspection. This is our last stop in South Africa. Today’s departure time is 3:00pm.

  • Maputo, Mozambique

    11. april 2023, Mozambique ⋅ ☁️ 77 °F

Today, I joined a walking tour organized by Erin. Boris could not go, since the tour guide told Erin the path will not be passable for a wheelchair. He was correct.
We met our tour guide, Hendy at 10am and after a short introduction, proceeded to a beautiful building….train station.

It was constructed from 1908 to 1916 in the Beaux-Arts style. Widely recognized for its attractiveness, the station has been ranked by international publications as one of the world's most beautiful. In addition to function as a central railway station, it has a museum, restaurants and holds concerts.

After visiting some monuments and a red light district with hotels by the hour, we went to a fortress. Maputo Fortress, also known as Fortress of Our Lady of Conception, is a national historical monument related to the history of the Portuguese presence in the country and local resistance.

We also visited a botanical garden. Actually, it looks more like a small park with almond trees and bats on the trees.
We visited an independent squire with a monument of the first Mozambican president. After he was killed in a plane accident, his wive marred Nelson Mandela. So she was First Lady twice in two different countries.

Our last stop was a market where I got some cashews nuts. These market has the biggest hair extensions selection anywhere in Africa.
It was a very good walking tour.

  • Mayotto, French Comoros

    14. april 2023, Mayotte ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

That is what Google say about Mayotte:

Mayotte is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and the coast of Mozambique. It’s a department and region of France, though traditional Mayotte culture is most closely related to that of the neighboring Comoros islands. The Mayotte archipelago is surrounded by a coral barrier reef, which shelters a lagoon and marine reserve that are popular diving destinations.

When I saw coral barrier reef in above description, I needed to go snorkeling.
We read that the best beach for it is about one hour away from tender boat.

So, six of us hired a taxi to take us there, then we thought, three hours on the beach and one hour back. Unfortunately, it took us two hours to reach that beach, then it was a long walk to the beach, some time spent with lemurs. I brought a banana for them and as soon as I got banana out, they jumped on me, I dropped banana and 🏃‍♀️.

We settle on the beach, put our snorkeling gear on and went to find fish and corals.
The water was as warm as a bathtub, but….no fish and no corals. One of our friends saw a turtle.
We were a little concerned about how long it would take us to get back, so we packed and got back in the car that was waiting for us. The trip back took us an hour, no traffic.

Back on the ship, we took shower, changed and had a lovely dinner all six of us in the Main Dinning Room.

  • Nosy Be, Madagascar

    16. april 2023, Indian Ocean ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Nosy Be is an island off Madagascar’s northwestern coast. In the southeast, the forests of Lokobe Reserve shelter chameleons, geckos and frogs. The capital, known as Hell-Ville, has French colonial buildings and a covered market. Lemuria Land is home to a variety of lemurs, plus reptiles. Also in the park is a 19th-century distillery still used to extract essential oils from the native ylang-ylang tree.

Our plan for today was go to Lemuria Land. Erin and Mui agreed to put up with us and go together. I was a litte concerned about Boris. We did not have any information on how long or difficult the walk will be in the park.

We took a first tender boat to the shore and were on the island around 10:30am. It was already very hot.
We tried to get a taxi to the park and the first quote was 100 euros, after short negotiation, we lower that to 40 euros. That was ok. All four of us got into a small sedan without air conditioner and when we asked for air, the price went 5 euros up.
We did not like it and got out of the car. Short walk later we fount lots of parked Tuk-Tuks and for $20 a couple round trip went to the park.

Fifteen minutes later we were in the park. Paid entrance fee and were greeted by a private guide who took us on the walk.
The walk was about 40 minutes.
We saw very interesting trees, flowers, turtles (all different sizes and colors), snakes, crocodiles, lizards and many many different lemurs. There are 117 different varieties of lemurs in Madagascar.
We had a chance to feed and hold lemurs.
By the end of our walk, we were really hot and tired, but Boris did really good, did not complained at all.

We were back on our tender boat by noon and were glad to be back on the ship to take shower and cool down.
It was a good short tour and I do not think we could be outside much longer. Way too hot.

The name of the beach is Anse Beau Vallon. It took us about ten minutes drive, 4.5 miles, to get to this beach. We rented lounge chairs in the shade of the trees and went to swim. The water was really warm, but no snorkeling. Did not see any fish.
After few hours, we got fried calamari and hamburger for Boris. Calamari were fresh and delish.
We would love to stay longer on the beach, but our driver was not willing to wait for us past 6:00pm.
Back on Insignia, we had fruits and ice cream.

    18. april 2023, Seychellerne ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Our ship left Mahé, Seychelles at 4:00am and after a short distance anchored neat island of La Digue.

We did not have a tour, so we took a tender boat to the island as soon as it was possible and by 8:45am were on the ground. We took first available taxi to get to the most famous beach Anse Source D’Argent. It is located only one mile from the tender port. It was probably the most expensive one mile ride we ever had.

To get to the beach, we had to enter L’Union Estate, a historic vanilla and coconut plantation. Our goal was the beach, so we did not spend anytime in plantation, except paying an entrance fee.
When we got to the beach….oh, it was a paradise. Crystal clear warm water, white sand and fish that swim right to your feet. I even managed to touch few of them.
And at this time, there were no people except us. Later, more tourists came. We stayed on the beach for 3 hours and took a golf cart back to our tender boat.
It was a perfect day in paradise.

This is our second time in Salalah. In 2017 we had full day private tour that covered all major sites of the city. For today’s, I booked an adventure tour for four people. Our friends, Pat and Norm joined us on this tour. It’s their fourth visit to Salalah.

We had to take a shuttle out of the port and our green Jeep with a tour guide was waiting for us.
Our driver/tour guide was a pleasant young man with good English. We immediately felt very comfortable with him.

We started to drive west of the city toward Yemen. The plan was to see few waterfalls, unfortunately we were told the waterfalls are dry. Instead, we will see other sites.
We stopped at the few beautiful spots to take pictures and then we saw a big group of camels. We stopped and camels came right to our car. We had a chance to touch them. Such a cute animals. Very long eyelashes and gentle faces.

Then we stopped at Cave Marmeet and Blow Holes. It’s a popular tourist destination and the only place where we saw tourists. Our tour guide got us mangos and pomegranates for a little snack. Nice touch.
More driving and beautiful stops before we approached a checkout point. We were 60km from Yemen.
Our next destination was swimming, but before that, our guide stopped at the store to get us a snack. Ten minutes later he came out with three plates of food that were hot and smelled heavenly.

He got us famous Omani street food…Honey Cheese Fataya. Absolutely delicious.

We continue driving toward the promised beach stopping few times to take pictures.
Finally we arrive to a beautiful beach with no people. He parked the Jeep on Fazayat beach and Pat and I went swimming. The water was perfect temperature, silky white sand. Unfortunately, the wave were a little too strong for Boris to go swim.
After 15-20min in the water, we changed and back in the car.
By 2:30pm we arrived at the restaurant for lunch. We were not very hungry, but decided since the lunch was included in the price of the tour to eat local food.

Boris had fish and chips and said it was the best he ever had. I had stir fry with shrimp and it was also very good.
We returned to the ship very full and skipped the dinner.

It was another wonderful day in Oman.

  • Muscat, 🇴🇲 Oman

    24. april 2023, Oman ⋅ ⛅ 86 °F

We have been in Muscat six years ago and had a very good whole day tour. For today we booked three hours boat tour to see dolphins and snorkel with Younga and David.
To get to our boat we had to take shuttle from the ship to the entrance of the port and them walk 100-150 yard to the hotel.
At 9:15am the taxi came to get us and after 10min with crazy driver we were at the place where the boat tour will start.
We told to wait inside the cafe till 10:00am.
At 10:00am we were told to wait 5 min more. This 5min turned into 20. Finally, we proceeded to a beautiful boat full of Indian tourists.
We were told that they will disembark after dolphin watching and for snorkeling there will be only 4 of us.
We saw lots of dolphins. I took some pictures of them, but the dolphins are so fast, I did not get any good ones.
After seeing dolphins, as promised, all passengers got out and four of us went on our snorkeling 🤿 adventure. The beautiful boat was all for us.
We snorkeled for maybe 30 min, until Boris had enough. The water was very pleasant and there were fair amount of fish. We saw one turtle.
Back on the boat, we decided to come back on the ship and have a quick lunch and then go to shop.
Not much shopping as most stores were already closed. But Younga was very interested in oriental rugs, so we spent an hour shopping for rugs. She did not get any, but we both really liked one silk on silk rug.
Back on the ship, we joined our trivia team in celebration with champagne of being the team with highest points.
We ended evening in joining Younga and David for dinner at specialty restaurant.
    A fun day.

We arrived at 1:00pm, went through one on one customs inspection and were thinking to go see something in the city before 4:00pm. Today is our ATW cruisers third event. Then we went outside and it was so hot that we decided to stay on the ship and rest. At 4:00pm we went to Insignia lounge, got out tickets for transportation to the event and went outside.
On the parking lot of the terminal there were close to 80 Toyota Jeeps to transfer all of us to the event. Each Jeep accommodate four people.
One hour later we arrived at the desert in Al Maha Luxury Resort.

There were pillows to seat placed on rugs, wine, fruits. The sun was going down and the temperature was getting much more comfortable. The sunset was beautiful and we saw a falcon hunting performance.
After sunset we got back in the same cars and short ride later were at the resort. The party was marvelous. The music, performances and food were top notch. All of us had a great time.

There was a little problem with transportation back to the ship. They told us we do not have to go in the same car we came, but choose any car. That created a big mess. Finally, we got in the car and one hour later were back on the ship.

  • Dubai, UAE. Day 2

    26. april 2023, Forenede Arabiske Emirater ⋅ ☁️ 90 °F

Last night we came back from the event pretty late and went to bed at midnight.
Today, we got up at 7:00am and met Younga and David for breakfast to plan our day. By 8:20am we were out of the ship, took shuttle to the port entrance and hired a taxi to take us to see the architecture of the Museum of the Future.

The building's form is futuristic: The circular building represents humanity; the green mound it sits atop represents the earth; the void represents the unknown future. The building and the area around are stunningly beautiful.
The museum was still closed, so we walked around, took pictures and got back in our taxi to go to so called the Frame building.

The Dubai Frame is an observatory, museum, and monument. It holds the record for the largest frame in the world. The building has a height of 150.24 meters and a width of 95.53 meters. The building mainly serves as an observatory, providing views of old Dubai in the north and newer parts in the south. The elevator takes you to the height of 48 floor. The floor on the observation platform is glass. Beautiful view of the old and new Dubai.
After visiting The Frame, we took another taxi to the Mall of Emirates. That is the mall with downhill skiing. To see the slopes, they charge a hefty price, so we skipped the experience. Can see ski slopes in Colorado.
We walked around this mall, every luxury store in this mall. We did not go to any of them, instead went to a food court to get some food. I got a gelato 🍧 without checking the price. Oops, it was $11.
Done with mall, we took another taxi to a Gold Souk. Dubai's famous gold souk happens to be the world's largest gold market! With more than 350 jewellery traders and retailers, Gold Souk is restocked with at least 10 tons of gold daily.
After walking through the market for over an hour, we took our last taxi back to the ship.

Fujairah city is the seventh largest city in UAE. It is located on the Gulf of Oman.
We have been in this city in 2017 and at this time we were told that there is nothing to see. We took a shuttle and went to a mall for an hour, then came back on the ship.
This time we also did not have a tour and were not sure what to do. Again we met Younga and David and decided to explore together. There were two shuttles available: one to the mall and another to port gates. We took the last one. As soon as we got out of the shuttle, we were surrounded by taxi drivers. We hired one for 5 hours.
Our first stop was beautiful all white Sheikh Zayed Mosque. First we were told we can not visit inside, but then somehow Younga convinced them to let us in. We were properly dressed and just had to cover our heads with scarfs (we had scarfs with us). Boris has to put long pants over shorts.
In addition to going inside, we had a wonderful 40min tour of the Mosque.
It is the second largest Mosque in UAE and can accommodate 28,000 worshippers.
Our second stop was Fujairah Fort. Dating back to the 16th century, it is the among the oldest as well as the largest castles in the country.
Our next quick stop was man made waterfall and theater. After that we went to see the oldest Mosque in UAE, build in 1446. It is a small simple clay building with very hot stone floor.
Our final stop was a resort to rest and swim. We paid entrance fee, got lounge chairs and went swimming. The water was perfect: clean, pleasant temperature, soft hot (too hot) sand. We really enjoyed the beach. After two hours, it was time to get back in the car and drive “home”.

  • Mumbai, India. Day 1

    30. april 2023, Indien ⋅ ☀️ 88 °F

We have been in Mumbai in 2017 and loved the tour company and our tour guide. So, Erin arranged to have the same lady for our two days in Mumbai this time.
After going through face-to-face inspection in the cruise ship terminal, fingerprints anybody under 70 years old stamping our passports and papers, out group of 6 met outside of terminal.
Shortly, we met our guide and got very comfortable in the van. When we got to the gate of the terminal, our friend Pat did not have a stamp on her paper. She was told, she does not need it. Well, the guard would not let us drive thru, we had to go back to get the stamp.

After that, we drove to see slums. It’s the largest slums in India. This one is populations one million. No pictures allowed. Even if I try to describe it, it would be impossible. The explanation was given: it’s a way of live, it’s a community.
Everyone is doing something: bringing old washing mashing, printer, refrigerator. Next, others disassemble them to the last screw. Next group is breaking parts to a small piece, wash pieces, make bricks of plastic, aluminum, wires and sells them. Everyone makes a little money. The living condition is from basically a cot on the street to a something like apartment. There are stores, services, pharmacies, clinics.
While waiting for our van, we saw a large group of people dressed very festive. Our guide told us it is a wedding and in a few minutes we were dancing with locals.
Our van came and we drove to a very nice restaurant for a lunch.
After lunch break, we visited as our guide explained a very important Catholic Church. After that we drove to a old Portuguese village, tried some fruits that we never seen. Unfortunately, Boris was very tired after walking around in the heat and stayed on the bus.
We came back on the ship around 4:00pm. Need some rest before another day in Mumbai.

This is our second time in Mangalore. We did temples and city on our first visit, so today our tour took us away from Mangalore. The city we visited is Karkala. It’s located 60km from Mangalore which took us 1.5 hours. Not too far, but driving in India is let’s say challenging,
Today’s tour was organized by Erin. We joined them and Pat and Norm. All friends from 2017.

Karkala dates to ten century. Our first stop was to see 42 foot tall statue from 15th century, curved from one piece of granite. It is a religious site for Jain worshipers. That is the religion from this area.
That was the furthers point from the port we would go. On our way back to the ship, we stopped in Moodabidri town. We visited Soans Farm.

It is a farm/botanical farm with lots of tropical exotic fruit trees and plants. We had a chance to try some of them and also purchase more mangos.

Then after that, we went to the the Jain Temple. Another worship site of Jain religion. It was also build in 15tg century and know as 1000 pillars. All pillars are different. The temple is considered an architectural wonder and is a major attraction of Moodabidri.

Our last stop was a market. No purchases made there.
Nice shower after hot day and dinner in the Main Dinning Room

  • Kochi, India

    4. maj 2023, Indien ⋅ ☁️ 86 °F

Our second time in Kochi, India.
For this time I decided to book something different. I booked Tuk-Tuk tour.
As soon as the ship was cleared, we went thru custom (too long to describe the process in every Indian port) and met somebody from the tour company. The air conditioned car was waiting for us. After driving may 200 yards we were transferred to a Tuk-Tuk. It is basically three wheeled motorcycle with a cover on the top.
The guide/driver introduced himself, but I forgot his name. He was very knowledgeable, unfortunately he spoke English very fast and with a heavy accent, so it was very hard to understand him, but we got few things.

Kochi population is about 3 million. Kochi (also known as Cochin) is a city in southwest India's coastal Kerala state. It has been a port since 1341, when a flood carved out its harbor and opened it to Arab, Chinese and European merchants.
After driving for a while thru a crazy traffic, we arrive at Dhoby Khana. It is a one of the oldest laundromats in India.

The Dutch government brought 40 families for washing the Dutch army’s uniform in 1910. To this day 20 families members still working in this laundromat.
Each family has their own laundry basin, ironing space and drying space. We met a sweet lady of 87 who is ironing in this laundromat for 70 years. She let me use her very heavy cast iron to do some ironing.

Our second stop was Church is Saint Frances. Build in 1503 it is one of the oldest European churches in India. The Portuguese explorer Vasco de Gama died in Kochi in 1524 and was buried in this church. Later his body was transferred to Lisbon.

Next stop is fish market. It’s located on the beach and the freshest fish right out of the water sold. Another attraction is Chinese fish nets.
After walking for a while, we had much needed rest in the shade with coconut water right out of coconut.

We also stopped at the very secret Jain temple that opens only few days a year. It’s sits in the middle of the pond that one can reach only in canoes when the temple is open. Different flowers are blooming all year around all year long.

We stopped many times to witness everyday life of the people in various activities.

Our next stop is a spice market and factory. Right in the middle of the yard is a field of ginger roasting in the sun. Then it will be ground into the powder. Then we went inside the building, the smell was amazing from pepper, cinnamon, curry, and all other varieties of fresh spices. To visit the market, we had to climb to second floor. Boris was already pretty tired, so we skipped it.
We also visited Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica. It has a very long history of distraction and rebuilding.

We looked at the Dutch cemetery.

Another stop was Mattancherry Dutch Palace. Despite the name Dutch Palace, the palace was built by the Portuguese Empire as a gift to the Kingdom of Cochin.
The glory of the palace rests on the large number of murals, executed in the best traditions of Hindu temple art, which are religious, decorative and stylised. The murals have been painted in rich warm colours in tempera technique.
    Unfortunately, photos were not allowed.

After climbing very steep steps of the Dutch palace and touring it in a scorching heat, Boris was done, so we skipped the last stop….Paradasi Synagogue. We visited it in 2017. At that time there were 5 Jews living in Kochi. Now 4 remaining. The oldest one Sarah Cohen, who we met in 2017, died few year ago at the age of 96.
This time we just stopped at the gates of Jewish cemetery and looked through the closed gate at her burial site.

I probably mixed up some temples, sorry.
    We have so many.

Now we were really ready to go back on the ship. After lunch,
rest, shower and a dinner in specialty restaurant with friends, we are ready for the night.
